Happy 15th Anniversary, ACT!
The first half of our 2017/18 season celebrates Canada’s 150th Anniversary with a stellar
line up of Canadian musicians and moving dance performances, beginning with Raven Spirit
Dance on Canada Culture Day, and Ballet Kelowna’s Canadiana Suite. ACT patrons will know
that our artistic mandate ensures that “we present high quality exhibitions and perfor-
mances featuring primarily Canadian artists”. This season we are fortunate to be working
with Canadian artists who will share the breadth of musical expression of jazz, with the
incomparable Laila Biali, and Rémi Bolduc’s Swingin with Oscar, to The Great Canadian
Songbook performers Ken Lavigne, Diyet and Tiller’s Folly, and kicking it all off, we scored a
date on The Bros. Landreth tour.
To celebrate the ACT’s 15th Anniversary Season, we’ve put together some special program-
ming including the Canadian premiere of Cory Weeds' Little Big Band Explosion, along with
the creation of a new guitar trio! Be the first to experience Itamar Erez, Celso Machado and
Miroslav Tadic as they come together as the West Coast World Guitar Trio!
Your favourite series are back, including three great plays from The Arts Club Series, with
two performances of Mom’s the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty, the Stephen King classic Misery, and
a new not-to-be-missed musical, Vide Hille’s Onegin. Classical Coffee Concerts will feature
The Bergmann Duo in various configurations including a special evening concert with the
Borealis String Quartet, plus a solo performance by Sarah Hagen, who we are thrilled to have
back! She will also kick off ALT Fest with her Perk Up, Pianist!, which has received rave reviews
from the Fringe circuit. One of my all-time favourite Fringe shows, Little Orange Man, will
introduce adventurous audiences to the joys of object theatre, performed by the remarkable
Ingrid Hansen. Plus, laugh your socks off with Lucas Myers in Hello Baby. And the rumour is
true, God is a Scottish Drag Queen is making an appearance due to its popular appeal!
Families are also in for great fun starting with The Music of Junk as the featured performance
for our third Christmas Tradition event, and kids' troubadour Rick Scott on Family Day. Holiday
offerings include the thrilling Russian Popovich Pet Circus and the much awaited return of
Winter Harp!
Over the last eight years I have had the honour of programming The ACT Presents series. As
this is my last season, I want to take this opportunity to thank ACT patrons for your love of the
theatre and for supporting our varied, unique and exciting programming. The biggest shout
out to the volunteers, board, and amazing staff at The ACT—this amazing team will be sure to
make the next 15 years shine!

A NEW GENERATION OF LAUGHS
From the world-renowned creative team behind the Mom’s the Word series comes a new chapter in their stories of family and fracas. Their kids are grown, their marriages have “evolved,” and their bodies are backfiring. Life doesn’t get any prettier, but it never strays far from ludicrous or poignant as the moms continue to mine their personal history for every embarrassing detail. Filled with insights, secrets, and ribald humour, this brand-new show from the moms you love is both hysterical and deeply touching.

When Evgeni Onegin visits the Larin family estate, his romantic charms stir passions long forgotten by its residents. Poet Vladimir Lensky’s romantic ideals are challenged (a duel!) after Onegin flirts with his fiancée Olga Larin, and even the sensible Tatyana Larin falls for the handsome rogue. The hit musical moves, shakes, and wakes audiences with its sweeping score, leaving the powerful question swirling in their minds: Look around, look around, look around, do you see someone worth dying for?
Onegin Book, music, and lyrics by Amiel Gladstone and Veda Hille

The Bros. Landreth
Canadian alternative country, roots-rockers, and siblings David and Joey Landreth have developed an impressive reputation for their exceptional musicianship that is uniquely their own. Their debut release, Let It Lie, is anchored by the bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swell of B3 organ, and the harmonized swoon of two voices that were born to mesh. Over the past decade the duo has supported some of Canada’s most talented artists from Doc Walker to Imaginary Cities and in 2015, Let It Lie won a JUNO Award for best Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.

Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter, pianist, and vocalist Laila Biali’s live show is eclectic and energetic, a true representation of her presence, both on and off stage. Melodies take thrilling left turns and pre-choruses give way to instrumental interludes. One minute Biali is soaring over a bluesy storm of handclaps and hard-charging keyboard riffs, the next she is pouring out her soul on an impassioned ballad. It’s jazz, it’s pop. It’s a beautiful style that can’t be put into a box.

Post-show talk with Bengt Jörgen, Artistic Director & CEO, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen
Canada’s Ballet Jörgen AnastasiaChoreographer: Bengt Jörgen • Music: Ivan Barbotin
A Russian Grand Duchess, born to privilege, is cast out into a post-revolutionary world... What will become of her?
Canada’s Ballet Jörgen brings back the magical 100 year old tale of the lovable yet controversial Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia. Part of the company’s repertoire for 10 years, the story is set to an original score by Russian/Canadian composer Ivan Barbotin. With incredibly detailed costumes, versatile sets and exquisite dancers and lighting, the tragic story of an innocent girl and the mystery and speculation about what truly happened on a fateful summer of 1918, is brought to life by acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen.

God is a Scottish Drag QueenWritten and Performed by Mike Delamont
Canadian comedian Mike Delamont’s one-man comedy, as everyone’s favourite deity, God, has won 15 ‘Best of the Fest’ awards and three Canadian Comedy Award nominations. The omnipotent playwright dressed in a floral power suit descends from above as the Almighty and skewers everything from Justin Bieber to the Pope. The Creator has chosen to present himself to the audience in order to clear up some misunderstandings about himself and his role. This hilarious and wickedly funny Canadian Fringe Festival favourite is a show, as a Vancouver reviewer described, where a comedian, “provides humourous insight into what religion is and what it has become”.

Ben Beveridge Trio
From the deep mountain valleys of the north Okanagan comes the rhythmic chunk of a mandolin, riding the percussive rush of a ringing acoustic guitar, with the crisp, driving melody of Ben Beveridge’s fiddle roaring across the bedrock and cutting new channels through the granite of modern traditional music. With a vocal reminiscent of vintage country, Texas swing, and 20th century folk, Ben Beveridge, accompanied by Dylan Ranney and Jonathan Tromsness, weaves his mastery of fiddle, mandolin, guitar and fearless production into subtle, insightful stories of life.

MODERN LEGENDSSonny Assu, Corey Moraes, Carrielynn Victor, Brandon Gabriel • Group First Nations ShowSeptember 9–October 28, 2017
Contemporary First Nations artists, Sonny Assu, Corey Moraes, Carrielynn Victor, and Brandon Gabriel all feature an intriguing blend of tradi-tional and contemporary storytelling in their art. In bridging modern attitudes with ancestral beliefs, their stories ensure that a provocative First Nations perspective is given voice within the myriad of Canada 150 celebrations taking place in 2017. Ensuring that ‘truth’ is recognized as the prelude to reconciliation, these artists render comic-book characters, super heroes, mythical beings and graffiti-inspired narratives as a critical and often humourous means of sharing both their personal and ancestral Modern Legends.
Funding for this exhibition was provided by Heritage Canada through its Canada 150 grant program.
ENSEMBLE 2017Group Show • All MediumsNovember 4–December 21, 2017
Embodying a spirit of inclusiveness and diversity, our annual Ensemble exhibition rolls forward every year as the holiday season is about to unfold. Participating artists are invited to show between three and seven works that resonate with the ‘ensemble’ theme through some unifying feature such as style, medium or colour palette. This exhibition is open to all BC artists. Submission guidelines are provided at www.theactmapleridge/gallery.

LINE, PAINT, CLAYRoger LukoDrawing, Painting, SculptureJanuary 13–March 3, 2018
Working from his semi-rural studio in Maple Ridge, Roger Luko has spent decades creating an extensive body of classically rendered sculptures, paintings and drawings that can only be described as ‘sublime’. His youthful studies at the City and Guilds of London Art School; Sir John Cass College in London, England; the Accademia di belle Arti in Rome Italy; and the Idun Loven Art School in Stockholm, Sweden, have clearly served him well. While much of his youthful tutelage was undertaken at these revered European institutions, the entire spectrum of Luko’s artistic oeuvre has emerged as straightforward and ‘honest’ as the man himself.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see an in-depth collection of figurative and landscape art by a remarkable local artist.
AN EXTENDED OUTLOOKBettina Matzkuhn Contemporary and Machine EmbroideryMarch 10-April 21, 2018
Bettina Matzkuhn’s textile works resonate with her intense interest in geography and mapping. Tall sculptural sets of sails, embroidered with tide runs, pilot charts, and cloud species, acknowledge the importance of observation and shared knowledge in the maritime community. Venturing farther into the elements, she stitches meteorological symbols, analysis charts, and projections of the globe onto two and three-dimensional textiles pieces. Her work uses the ancient and intriguing craft language of handwork to make compelling statements about the state of our environment.
