After spending much of the last decade as a member of the Gonzaga University women’s bas-ketball staff, including seven as an assistant, Lisa Fortier was named the program’s head coach on April 14, 2014, and has rattled off a series of firsts in her first three seasons at the helm.

In her third season, 2016-17, Fortier’s Zags swept the West Coast Conference regular-season and tournament championships, becoming the fastest coach in program history to 50 wins en route. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in nine years, and ninth time overall. Fortier became the first coach in program history to lead her team to the NCAA Tournament twice in her first three years, and she was named WCC Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons, also the first GU coach to achieve that feat. Her 2016-17 squad set program records in three-pointers made with 224 and free throw percentage at 77.4 percent, along with breaking the single-game made three-pointers mark three times, finally settling at 17. Sophomore Jill Barta became only the second sophomore in the Division I era to score 1000 points at GU and was only the third Zag to be named First Team All-WCC twice in her first two seasons. The team finished 26-7, the program’s ninth 25-win season in 10 years.

In her first season as a head coach in 2014-15, Fortier oversaw one of the nation’s more efficient offenses. The Bulldogs outscored opponents by 10.0 points per game. As a team, the Zags broke seven team records, including a program-best 77.4 percent from the free-throw line that season, which was also fourth-best in the country. GU made 534 free-throws and 211 three-pointers that season, both new program records.

Fortier was the 2015 recipient of the WBCA Division I Rookie Coach of the Year Award. Fortier had the best first season any head coach in Gonzaga women’s basketball history has ever had. Her 26 wins and 76.5 winning percentage were both top of the list among first year finishes for any GU women’s basketball coach.

Fortier led Gonzaga to a 26-8 finish and its seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. GU made its fourth appearance in the Sweet 16, after a pair of upsets in the first and second rounds as an 11-seed.

Fortier was named the West Coast Conference co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Zags to their 11th straight conference regular season title. Dur-ing the season, Gonzaga won 16 straight games, the fifth-longest win streak in program history.

Gonzaga advanced to the postseason for the 10th consecutive year during Fortier’s second season. The Zags ended their schedule in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Jill Barta became the first freshman to be named First Team All-West Coast Conference in eight years.

Fortier first came to Gonzaga in 2004, spending two years as the coordinator of basketball operations. She then spent one season as an assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado before returning to GU in 2007.

In her seven years as a Gonzaga assistant, the Bulldogs produced an overall record of 196-43. The Zags dominated the West Coast Conference dur-ing that span, compiling a 98-8 mark to go with seven consecutive WCC regular-season championships and five WCC Tournament titles.

After a second-round appearance in the WNIT in Fortier’s first season as an assistant, the Zags qualified for the NCAA Tournament the next six years, which included a stretch of three straight Sweet Sixteens from 2010-12. The highlight was an Elite Eight run in 2011, in which the Bulldogs upset three higher-seeded teams.

In addition to serving as Gonzaga’s recruiting coordinator, Fortier has been responsible for coordinating GU’s defense. She also spent time coach-ing Gonzaga’s guards. She has mentored two WNBA draftees in Courtney Vandersloot and Katelan Redmon as well as Haiden Palmer, a 2014 draft hopeful. She also coached Taelor Karr, the 2012-13 WCC Player of the Year.

A native of Grass Valley, Calif., Fortier played collegiate basketball at Butte (Calif.) Community College before transferring to Cal State Monterey Bay. At CSUMB, she earned Honorable Mention All Cal-Pac Conference honors as a junior and was an NAIA Academic All-American in 2003. She

also earned the 2004 CSUMB Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Fortier graduated Magna Cum Laude from CSUMB in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in human communications. Fortier earned her mas-ter’s degree in sport and athletic administration from Gonzaga in 2006.

Fortier, who spent two years as the Assistant Coaches Representative on the WBCA Board of Directors, is married to Craig Fortier, who joined the Gonzaga staff as an assistant coach in May of 2014, after previously serving as the as-sociate head men’s basketball coach at Eastern Washington University. They welcomed their first son, Marcus, in 2010. Their second son, Calvin, was born in 2012, and they welcomed a daughter, Quincy, in July, 2014.

LAS VEGAS – The Zags made a valiant effort late with an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time having to foul late, and fell to Belmont 71-63 on Thursday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in the first round of the Play4Kay Shootout.

Jill Barta had an outstanding night with her third-straight double-double in as many games, with 21 points on nine-of-17 shooting, and a career-high 22 rebounds, setting a new school record. She beat Anne Bailey, Penny Thomley, and Sue Harvey’s mark of 20. Zykera Rice scored 12, her season high, and Laura Stockton added 10. Emma Stach and Jessie Loera had four assists each, and GU shot 41 percent while holding Belmont to 35 percent from the field. GU defended Belmont at the three, holding

them to 27 percent, but only made two on their offensive end. The Zags blocked seven shots, led by three from Barta. GU dominated in the paint, 36-22 in points, and 15-2 in bench points, led by Loera with seven.

Barta opened the game with four points before Belmont could get on the board, but BU scored four-straight in response. The Bulldogs opened the game five-of-six from the field and led 11-4 three and a half minutes in. The scoring cooled from there as GU took a 15-11 lead into the second quarter. GU held Belmont to one-of-seven shooting from three, and finished seven-of-15 from the field in the quarter. One minute into the second quarter, Belmont took their first lead, 16-15. The Zags first basket of the second quarter came past the five-minute mark, as Belmont led 25-17. Jessie Loera nailed a three at the three-minute mark to stay close, 29-22. Rice hit a late jumper and Belmont led 36-28 at the half.

Barta finished the half with eight points and eight boards, Rice scored six, and Smith had five. GU shot 43 percent, Belmont shot 36 percent, and GU forced five turnovers with four steals. The Zags got within six early in the third quarter, but Belmont rushed back on a 5-0 spurt to lead 41-30 two minutes into the quarter. The Bruins still led 54-42 after three quarters. Barta hit the double-double mark midway through the fourth quarter with her 10th rebound and exploded from there. Barta grabbed the offensive board and put it back with four and half minutes left, getting it under 10, 61-52, forcing a Belmont timeout. Two pos-sessions later, Barta followed with a three-point play to make it 61-55. She made two free throws to cap the 11-0 run, but that was as close as GU got. The Zags came up empty on their next six shots, and had to trade baskets for free throws late.

The Zags (1-2) move onto face Kent State tomorrow at 3 pm. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
