NOTEBOOK A Penn Win Would...... Be the highest ranked victory in program history for the Quakers.... Mark the first win for Penn against Notre Dame. ... Push Penn to .500 on the season.

A Penn Loss Would...... Be the fourth to Notre Dame in program history.... Be the second-straight loss for the Quakers.... Drop Penn to 1-8 against the ACC in the McLaughlin-era.

Scouting the Fighting IrishNotre Dame enters Saturday’s contest with a record of 8-1, ranking third in the latest AP Poll and second in the latest Coaches Poll. Their trip to The Palestra marks the fifth true road game of the season thus far for the Fighting Irish, who have already tallied wins against four ranked teams, with their lone loss coming at #1 Connecticut. Arike Ogunbowale leads the way offensively for Notre Dame, averaging just over 20 points a contest, and is joined by three others averaging double-digit scoring. Jessica Shepard and Jackie Young pace the squad on the boards, both totaling over eight rebounds a contest.

Against the Atlantic Coast ConferenceCoach Mike McLaughlin is 1-7 against opponents from the ACC in his tenure at Penn, with the lone win coming on New Year’s Day of 2014, a one-point victory at Miami (Fla.). The Quakers have already battled one ACC foe this season, falling to Georgia Tech in The Bahamas as part of the Junkanoo Jam. With Saturday’s contest included, Notre Dame now matches Virginia as the most-played-against opponent from the ACC for Penn.

Watch Out for NwokediAs the defending Ivy League Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the Ivy League Tournament, it’s no secret that Michelle Nwokedi enters this season on the radar not just among the Ancient Eight, but nationally as well. In November, Nwokedi was placed on the inaugural Katrina McClain Award watch list to recognize the top power forward in women’s NCAA Division I basketball. Nwokedi is one of just 20 players around the country selected for this list by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

Nwokedi’s offensive prowess has certainly been key for Penn’s success over the years, as the native Texan has led the squad in scoring 37 times in her three-plus seasons, but not to be overlooked is her ability on the defensive end. Nwokedi currently ranks second all-time in program history with 249 career blocks, behind recently graduated Sydney Stipanovich, while sitting third in the same category in the Ivy League. Last season, Nwokedi swatted 87 shots, ranking second-most for a single season in Penn laurels.

Power Six HistoryPenn has traditionally played a challenging non-conference schedule since Mike McLaughlin took the helm in 2009-10, and that trend continues this season. In fact, the Quakers have played four non-conference top-15 teams in the last six seasons (#3 Notre Dame in 2011-12, #5 Notre Dame in 2013-14, #4 Tennessee 2014-15, and #14 Duke in 2015-16). Among the non-league foes, Penn has scheduled its share of teams from the power six conferences. En route to the Ivy title in 2013-14, the Quakers earned their first-ever win over an ACC opponent with a dramatic 67-66 win at Miami (Fla). Other power conference opponents in McLaughlin’s tenure include Northwestern, Iowa State, Virginia, and Duke as well as the annual Big 5 matchups with Villanova and Temple.

This season, Penn will battle two ACC foes in the non-conference, including another highly touted matchup with #3/2 Notre Dame at The Palestra and the first game since 1983 against Georgia Tech in The Bahamas as part of the Junkanoo Jam.

Winning SeasonsThe last five seasons have produced five of the six winningest seasons in school history. Before Coach McLaughlin, Penn had won 18 or more games only twice in its history, but has now done so in five straight seasons.

Kinum Coming Out Party The island of Bimini treated freshman Katie Kinum especially well, as the rookie had a coming out party against Georgia Tech in the opening game of the Junkanoo Jam with season and career bests in virtually every statistical category, including points (17), rebounds (4) three pointers (3) and assists (3) while also playing 28 minutes. Kinum followed that up with six points in the win against Missouri State.

Magic Number: 60 The statistic that may most indicate a Penn win or loss? 60 points. Penn has won 68 of its last 69 regular season games when scoring at least 60 points. Since head coach Mike McLaughlin took over at Penn, the Quakers are 98-11 (.899) when they reach that number (70-3 over the last four seasons). In comparison, the Quakers are just 37-92 (.286) when they’ve scored less than 60 points under Coach McLaughlin. The trend continues defensively. Over the last seven seasons, the Red and Blue are 26-48 (.351) when allowing 60 points or more. But when holding opponents under that number, the Quakers hold a healthy winning record of 107-29 (.787).

All-Time Wins LeaderCoach Mike McLaughlin became Penn’s all-time wins leader, surpassing Lois Ashley’s mark of 128 wins in 12 seasons with his 129th win at Dartmouth (3/3/17). The head man now sits with an all-time record of 135-102 (.570) at Penn. In addition, McLaughlin earned the 500th win in his career during the 2015-16 season, and currently ranks 26th among active Division I coaches with 542 victories.

Stingy DefenseOver the years, Penn has developed into one of the nation’s most consistent defensive squads, holding its opposition to an average of 60 points or less to finish the year for seven-straight seasons. Last season, the Quakers ended the year ranked third in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 52.1 points per game.

Non-Conference SuccessPrior to Coach McLaughlin, the Quakers had won nine non-league games only once in program history, but have done so in four of the last five years. Last season, Penn continued its school record with its sixth straight season at .500 or better against non-league competition.

Ivy League Success Last year marked the fourth-straight season that Penn won 11 or more Ivy League games, including the second year in a row that the Quakers tallied 13 victories gainst the Ancient Eight. Prior to that, Penn had won 11 or more Ivy League games only twice in its entire history. The program record was set in 2000-01 when the Quakers went undefeated at 14-0.

McLaughlin’s Magic Touch Behind the fastest coach to win 400 games in women’s basketball history (at any level), the Quakers have steadily improved their record under head coach Mike McLaughlin. After a 2-26 campaign in his first year along The Palestra sidelines, Penn has won 11, 13, 18, 22, 21, 24, and 22 games in succession during his next seven years. In addition, a player from Penn has captured Ivy League Player of the Year three of the last four years, Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year three of the last four years, Ivy League Rookie of the Year two of the last four years, and Coach McLaughlin has earned the past two Ivy League Coach of the Year honors.

Above .500With a win over Cornell on March 7, 2015, Coach McLaughlin’s record went above .500 at Penn for the first time (86-85). Despite increasing Penn’s win total each season, the Quakers were just 26-61 (.299) in his first three-plus seasons. Since then, the Quakers are 109-42 (.722), including 69-25 (.734) the last three-plus years. In Ivy League play, Coach McLaughlin lost 15 of his first 16 Ivy contests and started 12-31 (.279). Since then, the Quakers are 58-11 (.841) against the Ivy League.

Can’t Get to 5-0? It’s a No-Go.The Quakers have won 51-straight games when holding their opponents to 49 points or less. The last time a team defeated the Quakers despite being held under 50 points was January 16, 2013, a 48-44 loss to Big 5 rival Villanova.

Defensively ConsistentPenn has held its opponents to 68 points or less in 71 of its past 73 games. The lone games over that mark since Feb. 14, 2015 have taken place this season.

National Media Cheat SheetUnfamiliar with Penn, the Ivy League

and/or the Big 5? We’ve got you covered! Here’s how to sound like an

expert:

Penn * We ask that you refer to us simply as Penn. Please refrain from calling us Pennsylvania at any time. The first time you mention us on-air or in your columns, you can use our full name—the University of Pennsylvania. Thereafter, it’s just Penn, please! Thanks!

* Penn plays at The Palestra, known as The Cathedral of College Basketball. It is the second-oldest arena in the nation. More teams have played in The Palestra than any other arena in college basketball. Its also the longtime home of the Big 5 (see below).

Ivy League* Also referred to as the Ancient Eight. Known as the nation’s most stable athletic conference, the Ivy League has never added or subtracted schools. The original eight schools—Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale—have remained intact since the inception of the league in 1956.

* There are no athletic scholarships—the only league in the country without them.

* Automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament is determined by four-team conference tournament.

* League schedule is 14 games and a true home and away round robin.

* Overall, Ivy League teams are usually held to just a 28-game regular season schedule.

Big 5* A city conference made up of five Division I schools in the Philadelphia area. In all there are six Division I schools in Philadelphia, but Drexel was a Division II institution when the Big 5 Conference was founded in 1954.

* Conference members include: La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph’s, Temple and Villanova.

* First season was 1955-56 for the men and 1979-80 for the women.

* All schools play each other once during the regular season and a city champion is crowned at the end of the round robin.

2017-18 @PENNWBB GAME NOTES 5 2001, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2017 Ivy Champions

Winning StreaksPrior to Coach McLaughlin, Penn had just one winning streak of more than seven games—in its entire history—the school-record 21 consecutive victories in 2000-01 en route to an undefeated Ivy League season and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. However, in the last four seasons, the Quakers have had six such winning streaks, including a seven-game stretch last year.

Trey StreakPenn has made a three in every game dating back to a home loss to Harvard on Feb. 6, 2010—a span of 219 games.

Defending Ivy ChampionsWith a 62-46 road win over Harvard last season, Penn earned its fifth Ivy League Championship in program history and third in four years. The Quakers followed that up as the first-ever Ivy League Tournament champions, winning games against fourth-seeded Brown (71-60) and second-seeded Princeton (57-48) in the inaugural tournament at The Palestra to seal the Ivy League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Enter Coach McLaughlin...Under head coach Mike McLaughlin, the Quakers have won nine Big 5 games in the last seven years, including seven victories within the last four years. Prior to that, Penn won a total of seven Big 5 games between 1994-2009 (15 seasons). In all, in the 30 years prior to the Coach McLaughlin era, Penn won just 14 Big 5 games. That gives Coach McLaughlin over one-third of Penn’s all-time Big 5 wins. He already owns the school record with nine career Big 5 victories.

A Look at Penn’s Recent Postseason Experience Prior to this school-record stretch of five-straight postseason appearances, Penn had never been to the postseason in back-to-back years. In 2013, Penn posted the first two postseason wins in program history with home wins over Howard (65-60) and Fairfield (49-48) in the opening two rounds of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. Penn then lost in the semifinals at Detroit, 71-68. The following season, the Red and Blue led fifth-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by as many as 15 in the first half (32-17), and seven at halftime (38-31), but ultimately fell, 79-61. In 2014, Penn earned its first-ever WNIT berth and victory with a home win over Hofstra before a close second-round loss at The Palestra to Big 5 rival Temple. The 2015-16 Quakers earned the No. 10 seed for the NCAA Tournament and fell to the University of Washington, 65-53, in College Park, Md. in the First Round. Last year, Penn entered the NCAA Tournament as a 12 seed, and at one point led No. 5 Texas A&M by 21 in the fourth quarter before getting edged by the Aggies, 63-61.

Mid-Major RespectThe Quakers are currently receiving votes in the latest Mid-Major Poll by CollegeInsider.com, sitting at 28th overall. Penn is one of five Ivy League squads currently owning votes in the poll.

Dishin’ Out DimesAnna Ross currently ranks fourth all-time at Penn with 363 career assists, only 65 behind the program leader Cheryl Rath (428, set in 1989). Ross enters the 2017-18 season after earning Second Team All-Ivy accolades last season. As a junior, Ross ended the year tied for first in the Ivy League with 127 assists on the season (4.2/game). Ross’ presence was invaluable, as she also led the Ancient Eight in total minutes played, logging 1,057 minutes on the court (35.2/game).

Double-Double MachineMichelle Nwokedi ranks fourth in program history with 34 career double-doubles, only three behind Sydney Stipanovich’s third-place mark and nine behind Natasha Rezek’s second-place mark. Last season Nwokedi finished the year ranked 23rd nationally with 15 double-doubles.

Speaking of the Record Books...Last year Nwokedi became the 22nd player in program history to earn 1,000 points in a Feb. 24 victory over Cornell. She currently ranks 10th in program history with 1,208 points.

#PathToThePalestraThe Quakers earned the No. 1 seed in last year’s inaugural Ivy League women’s basketball tournament by virtue of winning the regular season trophy with a 13-1 record against the Ancient Eight. The second edition of #IvyMadness will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, 2017 at The Palestra in Philadelphia. The top four teams in the league earn berths to the tournament, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championship on Sunday. Each game will be broadcast live on ESPN’s family of networks.

National ExposureToday’s game can be seen live on NBC Sports Philadelphia. The Quakers will be featured on television nine times this season, in addition to the Ivy League Tournament. Penn will be featured on ESPN3 a total of five times, totaling 15 games on the platform since the start of the 2014-15 season. Penn’s game at Princeton later this season will also be broadcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Picked FirstThe Quakers were picked to finish first in the Ivy League’s Preseason Media Poll, garnering 12 first-place votes and 129 points as the preseason favorite to win the conference. This season marks the fifth-straight year the Red and Blue have earned first-place votes in the preseason poll and the third time in four seasons they’ve been chosen for first-place laurels. The Quakers tied with Princeton in the 2014-15 edition of the rankings and were picked second in 2015-16. Last year, the Quakers were tabbed as the favorites and delivered, leading the league from start to finish.

Leading the WayAll four seniors, Beth Brzozowski, Michelle Nwokedi, Anna Ross and Lauren Whitlatch were named captains for the 2017-18 season. All together, this contingent of seniors owns over 2,600 points in their three seasons with the Red and Blue, as well as over 1,300 rebounds and 600 assists. Nwokedi is the defending Ivy League Player of the Year, while Ross earned Second Team honors in 2016-17. Whitlatch is poised for a return after suffering a season-ending ACL injury last year, an injury that inserted Brzozowski into the starting lineup.

New Kids on the BlockFive freshmen are set to join the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team, as Tori Crawford, Chrissy DiCindio, Michae Jones, Katie Kinum and Eleah Parker will all don the Red and Blue. The class consists of two guards, two forwards and a center and hail from four different states. Both Kinum and DiCindio make the short trip from New Jersey, Crawford comes from Maryland, Parker from North Carolina, and Jones from Louisiana. The five new additions bring a wealth of awards and accolades with them, including three First Team All-State accolades from Parker, two-time county Player of the Year honors from Kinum, three-time Second Team All-State selections for Jones, conference Player of the Year award for DiCindio and three-time All-Independent School League for Crawford.

Offseason News and Notes…- The Quakers hired Ashley Robinson as an assistant coach in late August. Robinson joins the program after spending her first year as a coach at Holy Family. Robinson brings a plethora of playing experience to the Quakers as a former student-athlete at St. Joseph’s University where she helped lead the Hawks to two NCAA Tournament berths.- In early September, the Red and Blue joined forces with SPIN (Special People in Northeast) to host the first annual Fall Ball Classic to raise funds for adults with autism and intellectual disability.

2017-18 @PENNWBB GAME NOTES 11 2001, 2004, 2014, 2016, 2017 Ivy Champions

Now in his ninth season at the helm Penn women’s basketball, McLaughlin has established himself as one of the most respected and esteemed coaches in both the Ivy League and country while making the Quakers a nationally renowned program. McLaughlin was hired as the eighth head coach in program history on April 24, 2009. A three-time Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year, McLaughlin has a career record of 540-161 (.770) and has posted 20 or more wins in 18 of his 22 seasons as a head coach, including six 30-win seasons. The Philadelphia native has won 13 conference titles, is a 17-time Conference Coach of the Year and won his 500th game as a head coach during the 2015-16 season. McLaughlin has built the Penn women’s basketball program into an Ivy League powerhouse. The Quakers have won 20 games in four consecutive seasons for the first time in program history, clinched three Ivy League championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 2014, 2016 and 2017 and won the program’s first-ever Big 5 title in 2014-15. Penn has reached the postseason in each of the last five seasons (a school record) and just completed the winningest six-year stretch in program history. The 2016-17 season continued the culture of success known during the McLaughlin era, where the Quakers posted a 22-8 overall record and 13-1 mark in Ivy League games. The Red and Blue won the inaugural Ivy League Tournament with a decisive 57-48 win over Princeton, the third over the Tigers in 2016-17, and booked their trip to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 12 seed. Penn led Texas A&M wall-to-wall in the NCAA First Round and gave the Aggies all they could handle in Los Angeles, but the upset bid fell just short with a 63-61 defeat at Pauley Pavilion. The Quakers once again saw several individuals earn accolades for their performances during the season, with Michelle Nwokedi being named the Ivy League Player of the Year, a unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection and an All-Big 5 honoree. Sydney Stipanovich (Second Team All-Big 5) and Anna Ross were named Second-Team All-Ivy selections while McLaughlin brought home Ivy League Coach of the Year honors. 2015-16 broke multiple records under McLaughlin’s tutelage. The Quakers concluded the year with 24 total wins and 11 non-conference victories (both school records) and finished the season with the highest RPI in program history at No. 27 to earn the Ivy League title. The team also posted eight wins over schools ranked in the top-100 of the RPI and finished the year with the highest NCAA tournament seed in school history (No. 10). Additionally, McLaughlin notched his 500th win as a head coach and his 100th as a Quaker during the course of the season. Individuals also thrived under McLaughlin’s coaching environment. Sydney Stipanovich was named the 2015-16 Ivy League Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year to become the first player in Ivy history to win both in the same season. Additionally, Stipanovich and Michelle Nwokedi were each named First Team All-Ivy and Big 5 honorees while the former entered the Red and Blue record books as Penn’s all-time blocks leader. In 2013-14, the Quakers tied a school record for wins in a season and earned the outright Ivy championship with the second-best league mark in program history. The Quakers earned their first win over an ACC opponent (at Miami) and earned back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time ever. With that resume, the Red and Blue entered the NCAA Tournament against fifth-seeded Texas and led by as much as 15 and seven at the half before falling 79-61. Penn boasted the 2013-14 Ivy League Player of the Year, Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Defensive Player of the year -- the first school to sweep all three awards. The Quakers also became the first school to sweep Big 5 Player, Coach and Rookie of the Year awards. Five of McLaughlin’s recruiting classes have produced the Big 5 or Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Prior to his tenure, only one Penn player had ever earned Big 5 Rookie of the Year accolades, but four have done so under his watch. Penn’s win total improved in each of McLaughlin’s seven seasons as the Quakers went from two wins to a school-record 25 victories in that span. He entered the 2009-10 season with the highest winning percentage of any head coach in college basketball - man or woman, at any level. However, facing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in decades and inheriting a team that lost 74 percent of its scoring, including the Ivy League’s top scorer, Penn finished last in the Ivy League in his first season at the helm. Prior to Penn, McLaughlin had unprecedented success at NCAA Division II member Holy

Family University, where in 14 seasons as head coach of the women’s basketball team he had a career equal to anyone who has coached the game. McLaughlin racked up an impressive record of 407 wins and 61 losses, a winning percentage of .870 which was the highest at any level of NCAA Basketball (men or women). Out of his 14 seasons as a head coach, McLaughlin was honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year 13 times. In 2008-09, McLaughlin won his 400th game as a head coach faster than any other women’s basketball coach in NCAA history, doing it in 459 games. The Division I record is held by Leon Barmore, who needed 463 games to reach the milestone at Louisiana Tech, while the Division III record is 464 games set by Nancy Fahey at Washington University (Mo.). A graduate of Holy Family, McLaughlin received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. From his stellar playing career at Holy Family, he remains ninth all-time in scoring with 1,481 points and third with 755 assists. McLaughlin lives with his wife Ginny and three children (Courtney, Michael and Kelsey).
