Young Audiences of Massachusetts is an non-profit organization and your arts learning resource.

Our mission is to educate, inspire, and empower the youth of Massachusetts through the arts.

We love working with you to provide students with impactful arts programming that builds learning skills, motivates focused training and achievement, inspires self-expression and explores world cultures. The arts are an essential component of educating the whole child. Thank you for partnering with us to bring them to Massachusetts youth.

“I am so very grateful to Young Audiences for giving us this gift of art, music and culture. Teachers came up to me to say things like “best ever” and “grand slam” and “couldn’t have been more perfect for our students.”

IN TYPICAL YEAR AT YAMA...

YAMA weekly residencies impacted at-risk students in 28 classrooms this past year

Young Audiences of Massachusetts (YAMA) is a non-profit arts learning organization that has impacted the lives of youth in MA for 55 years. We believe that arts are an essential component of both formal education and of youth development, and should be accessible to all students, regardless of backgrounds, special needs or abilities. Our offerings for schools, libraries, museums, community arts centers, hospital schools, homeless shelter preschools, and other centers of learning, include:

• Inspiring performances for school assemblies or other student audiences

• Hands-on workshops, in which small groups of students work directly with a teaching artist to practice an art form in a focused environment

• In-depth artist-in-residencies, comprised of progressive workshops culminating in a final performance or project; also available as a year-long solution for schools who lack regular arts instruction to help build skills and progress toward mastery

• Expanding Horizons Through Music, a yearlong pre-K literacy-through-music residency program that includes arts integration training for classroom teachers

• Healing Arts For Kids, our specially tailored arts learning performances and residencies for students with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges.

• Practical professional development workshops, to help educators incorporate the arts into their classroom teaching

• SmARTalk e-news, workshops and showcase events for arts coordinators, on how to select, plan, fund and publicize arts education programming

Our Roster

Our roster of more than 110 performing and teaching artists are masters of their forms who tour and teach throughout the region, the country and the world. They represent a broad spectrum of cultures and traditions and their programs are vetted, evaluated and improved each year.

Our Staff

danceHow do we communicate without words? When movements are isolated and heightened, we begin to see and understand. Dance is used for storytelling, for ritual and celebration, and for personal expression. Learning through dance helps us physicalize abstract concepts—to take them into ourselves in new ways. Mastering dance requires practice and discipline and offers a fun and fulfilling way to exercise and stay fit. YAMA’s performances, workshops, and residencies introduce students to classical and traditional dance and movement forms within their cultural contexts, and can bring curriculum to life.

Consider YAMA Artist Residency programs, which offer students the chance to “get their hands dirty” trying out an art form with individual attention and guidance from YAMA teaching artists in a small group of their peers.

Residencies are made up of three or more 45-60-minute workshop sessions. Depending on your needs, you can either go for breadth of exposure—scheduling single session workshops for multiple small groups of students in one day—or depth of learning, scheduling multiple, progressive, skill-building workshops that culminate in a final project or performance.

All residencies include planning sessions with teaching artists to touch base about learning goals and program logistics.

Looking for programming for school vacation weeks, after-school time, or public art projects?

Music is the perfect marriage of mathematics and emotion. When an understanding of intervals and a mastery of internally counting units of time are applied to practiced fine motor skills, the result stirs hearts, stimulates minds and moves bodies. Music tells personal stories, records history and helps us both experience and regulate emotions. Learning music builds memorization skills. Coupling lyrics with music presents an exciting way to explore language arts. Analyzing music builds focus and pattern recognition. YAMA helps students both make and discover music in its many varieties.

Storytelling is the heart of all great teaching and learning. It uses the most fundamental human tools – voice, gesture, emotion, humor – to their fullest, to stir empathy, connect directly, create a community of listeners and bring them to another time and place. Storytelling is a foundational skill for everything from writing a persuasive essay, to delivering a presentation, to conceptualizing a problem to solve. YAMA’s storytellers and authors bring students international and historical tales; workshops on finding, shaping and performing stories, and programs on adapting stories to the page.

YAMA authors bring their books to life for

students. They describe the creation process

and the jobs of researching, writing, editing

and illustrating. They tell their stories, and

they encourage students to create their own

literary work.

Theater is the performing art that brings all others together, drawing upon movement, oral storytelling, music and visual arts to weave a spell over an audience. Its emphasis on keeping rapt attention through multiple means of engagement makes it a powerful teaching tool. YAMA’s programs span the academic subjects, breathing life into myths and historical figures, putting poetry into motion, revealing stories and puzzles behind mathematics and helping students practice the scientific method through theatrical experiments. We also use theater to help study interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution.

They must not only master color, form, composition and sequencing, but must also learn to develop imagination, creativity, self-expression and tactile acuity. 7 SHARE

Once your program is complete, you will be emailed a link to our brief Program Evaluation Form. You can also access this form on our Website. Please forward the link to any other teachers, administrators or parents who experienced the program. Please also share photos and stories of delight, discovery and transformation. Your feedback will inform other arts coordinators and be used to develop our programming.

Scheduling Discounts

Multiple performances at your school in one day • All performance program pricing includes discounts for scheduling “doubles,” “triples,” or “quads” at your site on the same day. This option is particularly useful if you want to bring programs to large number of students at your school while keeping each audience limited to a size that is most conducive to learning, or if you want to divide audiences by grades so that artists can tailor their material to the appropriate developmental levels of your students. Please see artist Webpages for pricing details.

Multiple performances in your district on the same day • For the majority of our artists, if more than one school in the same district schedules a performance on the same day, those schools may count the performances as “doubles,” “triples” or “quads” and split the fees between schools. Note: “cartage fees” may apply for multiple set-ups and strikes.

Town-wide Booking • Bringing a YAMA performance program to every school in your district is an incredible way to build community. Receive a 10% discount (up to $1,000) on program fees when 8 or more performances by the same artist are scheduled within the same district by one coordinator.

“Siblings, friends, teammates and neighbors were further connected by sharing the same dynamic cultural event. Students were abuzz with excitement and inspiration.”

The YAMA Artist Showcase is a school day filled with 20-minute demonstrations of our programs for audiences of students, teachers and school administrators, in multiple locations on a school campus. It’s like a school-wide arts festival!

Want to preview a program you were not able to see at our showcase? YAMA posts a calendar of upcoming school performances on our Website. If you decide to preview a performance, please contact the host school using the phone number provided to let them know you are planning to attend.

SHOWCASE Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Pike School in Andover, MA

30

Young Audiences of Massachusetts was established as a non-profit in 1962 from a belief in the power of arts learning, and in response to an enduring concern that the arts were considered an ancillary enrichment opportunity, disposable during lean budgeting times, rather than an indispensable component of educating the whole child. We believe that the arts are an essential component of both formal education and of youth development, and that an essential role of the arts is to educate—to open minds, awaken perceptions, unlock potential, develop imagination, express culture and impart both knowledge and wisdom.

A small organization with a statewide mission, we are proud to help ensure that Massachusetts is a state that values the arts, those who dedicate their lives to practicing and sharing them, and the young people who have so much to gain from their study.

Please join us as advocates for arts learning, to help us continue to bring rich and delightful programming that represents the best of both traditional and contemporary art forms, from cultures around the world, with practical ties to curriculum, to as many young people in our communities as possible.
