General
With the world’s largest range of closures, Corningoffers a complete line of solutions for connecting anddistributing all types of communication cable.
Closures are used to provide protection for splices onstraight, branching and distribution cables. Themechanical and electrical continuity provided by theclosures must be as though there had been no breakin the cables at this point.
This requirement applies regardless of the
• location of the cables, e.g. buried directly in theground, installed in ducts or on aerial cable routes
• type of cable, e.g. pressurized or grease filled
• design of the cable, e.g. with laminated sheath orarmoring.
The mechanical continuity is achieved by strain-relieving (anchoring) the cable sheaths. The electrical continuity of any armoring or metallicfoils in laminated sheaths is provided by a high-quality,low-resistance bond to ground bonding lines. It is provided to protect the installers and the electronicequipment from possible overvoltages which thesecable elements may develop from external sourcesand then discharge. In addition these bonds can bejoined to external grounding points.
The Closure Range
Closures are generally classified according to theirdesign into mechanical and heat-shrink types.
Mechanical closures comprise rigid closure tubes ordomes with one or two end caps for the cable en-trances. The sealing between the closure componentsthemselves and to the cables is made by means ofplastic compounds such as sealing tapes or gels or bysilicone seals. Pressure is applied to the seals me-chanically, i.e. with clips, hooks or screw fasteners.
Mechanical closures can be re-entered and closed asrequired for maintenance or system expansionpurposes.
The main product of this type offered by Corning is therange of Universal Closures UCN, designed speciallyfor the pressurized primary cable network and henceto withstand maximum stressing. There are also various solutions available for the non-pressurized secondary network, e. g. within the MHSrange.
Heat-shrink closures comprise heat-shrinkablesleeves which are wrapped around the splice and thecable ends. The closure is shrunk down using a gastorch to contract uniformly around the splice and thecable ends. An adhesive coating, also thermallyactivated, on the inside of the sleeve ensures aneffective seal.
There are different types of heat-shrink closureavailable for both the pressurized primary network andnon-pressurized secondary network.

Design
The Universal Closure UCN consists of two plastic endcaps and a plastic closure tube. The two-section endcaps incorporate the strain relief that absorbs the me-chanical forces which may be applied to the cables.Three-piece end caps are available to accommodate ahigher number of cables. Two metal bars interconnect the two end caps. On-sitehand-drilling of the cable entries provides flexibilitywith regard to cable diameter, number and arrange-ment of the cables.During installation of the end caps, the strain-reliefdisks are automatically pressed by two aluminum col-lars onto the cables. The compression guaranteesexcellent resistance against push and pull. The longitudinally split closure tube is closed with twoplastic bars. They are pushed on by a hammer andare secured with pins.Permanently elastic longitudinal and round sealingsallow the closure to be opened and re-closed as oftenas required without the need of consumables. EachUCN is equipped with test valve and externalgrounding device.

Universal vault closures UCNV serve to distributeoutdoor trunk cables onto indoor distribution cableswithin exchanges. There, the vault closures can be in-stalled in any position in cable vaults or other spaces. The size of the vault closure to be used depends onthe number of distribution cables to be led out, as wellas on the number of pairs and the conductor cross-section.For special requirements, RXS also offers a flame-retardant closure of the type UCN FR. The materialused complies with UL 94 V0. This version meets therequirements for flame-resistant closures to BellcoreTR-NWT-001058.
Special Features
• Designed as vault closure in non-pressurized cablenetworks
• One end cap suitable for accommodation of max.20 distribution cables
• Strain relief for trunk cable is integrated in the end cap• No corroding external metal parts• No special tool required for opening or closing
Design
Universal vault cable closures are available in twovariants:1. Complete UCNV vault closures (3 different sizes)
with all components necessary for installation inone closure package.
2. Individual distribution end caps (2 different sizes)to be combined with the well-known UCN universalclosures. To produce the desired vault closure, asuitable UCN closure with a corresponding capa-city has to be selected and one of the end capsincluded in the UCN closure package has to bereplaced by the corresponding vault cable end cap.
The UCNV vault closures comprise a two-sectionplastic end cap for the trunk cable, an aluminumdistribution end cap with the appropriate number ofcable entries with rubber sealings for the distributioncables and the longitudinally split closure tube, as wellas the necessary installation accessories. Unusedcable entries are to be closed with dummy plugs.Adapter plugs are available to adapt the cable entriesfor smaller cable diameters.

Features
• Complies to the strong requirements ofspecifications for pressurized closures
• Full closure range for cables up to 3000 pairs• Conforms to all splice configurations• Easy and rapid access to the splice for repair and
service• No use of resin• No use of outside energy, e.g. flame or electricity• Flash test at 750 mbar / 15 minutes
Design
The MHS P comprises:• Two half-shells made of black plastic• One end cap providing the sealing and strain relief
for one or two incoming cables• One end cap providing the sealing and strain relief
for up to four outgoing cables• A set of silicon seals providing sealing of the closure
To insert the cables into the end caps, selected for thetype of connection and cable, simply cut out the cableinlets using the specially designed punching pliers. The cables are sealed by applying sealing tapes to theend caps and around the cables. This sealingcompound withstands pneumatic pressure and envi-ronmental stress.Strain relief is provided by a metal strip held aroundthe cables by a metal collar.Silicon seals, fitted around the end caps and in agroove running along the half-shells, provide perfectsealing for the assembly. The half-shells are closedusing non-corrosive screws. The valve is prefitted inthe upper half-shell and the ground connection can beinstalled, on request, on the lower half-shell.

Features
The PEV closure guarantees an excellent protectionagainst climatic influences in tropical countries. Theventilation principle prevents humidity concentration, independent of air humidity and temperature changes.
• Cable entries individually adaptable on site• Quick re-opening and re-closing without additional
material• For use on cut and uncut cables
Design
The closure consists of two end caps and a closuretube. The end caps are split in two sections to takeuncut cables. The cable entries are designed as ring-shaped segments, like onion rings. They can easily beremoved with a knife which is part of the kit.
Each end cap has two cable entries. Sealing tapewrapped around the cables prevents ingress of water.
Two plastic connection bars link the two end capstogether.
Mechanical forces from the cables are absorbed byserrated plastic parts which are connected with theend caps. These parts are pressed onto the cablesheaths by non-corroding metal hose clamps.
The free-breathing split closure tube is closed bysimply latching into position. The closure is fastened tothe messenger wire by mounting devices.

Application
The MEP closure is mainly used for temporaryapplications if cable splices have to be made only for ashort time e.g. on construction sites, fair grounds or forcable repairs. They are also used if splices have to besealed up to the final installation e.g. as overnightclosure or under bad weather or environmentalconditions. The use of MEP should not exceed 2weeks in a manhole liable to flooding.
Design
Two half shells serve as splice housing. At the endsthese half shells are filled with gel which forms awatertight seal around the incoming and outgoingcables. Additionally a gel sealing tape is wrappedaround the cable to improve the sealing effect. Theseams between the closure halves are also sealed bygel which is filled in grooves along the sides of the halfshells.
To close the MEP the half shells are pressed togetheruntil they are latched. The MEP is fixed on the cableswith cable ties.

Application
GSCFor non-pressurized cable networks - with flexibleprotective liner.
GSC CFor non-pressurized cable networks - with metal can-ister as protection for increased mechanical strength.
GSC CPFor pressurized cable networks - with metal canisterand test valve.
Special Features
• High split resistance due to integrated PE net• Environmentally friendly sleeve composition out of
PE laminate and PE net• No ingress of water into the homogeneous com-
posite material• Very high mechanical strength of sleeve composite• No cable strangulation due to regulated shrink force
of the sleeve• No overheating of cable conductors due to reduced
heat during the shrinking process• Insensitive to sharp flame settings
Design
The reinforced closures have been developed to meetincreased demands in cable networks. For this pur-pose, a PE net has been integrated in the heat-shrink-able sleeve. This considerably increases the split re-sistance during shrinking and its mechanical strength. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hot-meltadhesive which guarantees a watertight and securebonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables.A temperature-sensitive paint on the sleeve indicatesthat sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. The closure kit consists of the heat-shrinkable rein-forced sleeve with closing channel, a protective liner ora canister, a shield connection lead and installationaccessories.
Accessories for Branching Closures

Application
SCXFor non-pressurized cable networks - with flexibleprotection liner.
SCX CFor non-pressurized cable networks - with metalcanister as protection for increased mechanicalstrength.
Design
In contrast to the closure series GSC the sleeves ofthe closures SCX and SCX C are not reinforced. The sleeve of these closures is made of one PE layer. The inner side of the sleeve is coated with hotmeltadhesive which guarantees a watertight and securebonding to plastic and metal-sheathed cables. Atemperature-sensitive paint on the sleeve indicatesthat sufficient heat has been applied to the sleeve. Theclosure kit consists of the heat-shrinkable sleeve withclosing channel, a protective liner or a canister, ashield connection lead and installation accessories.

Application
SCX R / GSC R sleeves are used for repairing damag-ed plastic or metal cable sheaths or for providing cor-rosion protection. The sleeves are suitable for all typesof non-pressurized cables in buried, ducted or aerialapplications. Repair sleeves for pressurized cables onrequest.
Design
The sleeves are made of fully cross-linked polyolefinand on the inner surface coated with hot-melt adhesivewhich ensures a permanent and reliable sealing. In ad-dition, the reinforced GSC R sleeves are equippedwith a PE net embedded between the outer and innersleeve layer. A flexible stainless steel channel is usedto close the sleeve. This channel can be cut off aftercooling down of the sleeve.

Training: expertise for your personnel
Total solutions are becoming ever more important forcommunication networks. Of particular importance inthis context are solutions for local networks (LANs) foruse on customer premises, and in the carrier area(e.g. telecommunication, CATV IP net-works) becausethe future lies in the integration of speech, image anddata.
At the same time, as world-spanning informationinfrastructure grows, also the quality requirements tobe met by networked communication solutions aregrowing. This demands knowledge – knowledge thatwe can pass on to you.
No-one can do everything –but everything can be learned
Techniques and products are subject to constantchange. This makes it essential to have staff trained tothe highest levels, who know how to utilize technicalprogress to your advantage. This can only beachieved by continuous training.
Knowledge is precious –which is why we pass it on
As a leading manufacturer of communication cables, cable accessories and networks we are working withour customers to build communication bridges for the21st century.
We realize that the planning, installation andmaintenance of cable systems involvescomprehensive knowledge – something we want toshare with you as part of a genuine partnership.
We do the training – you get the profit
Our worldwide knowledge in cable and networktechnology is channeled into our Training Center. Onthe basis of this knowledge, we develop diverseseminars for your staff.
Our training is aimed at all those who set up or operatecarrier or customer premise cable networks.
By undertaking training before starting on a project youwill avoid costly installation errors, and will put in placea critical prerequisite for the successfulimplementation of your project.
Practical orientation, not theoretical dreams
The balance is critical: theory is necessary, butpracticality dictates what must be done. From theirmany years of practical experience, our trainers knowwhich knowledge and skills are required for each task, and they are in constant contact with development, sales and projects engineering at Corning
We offer many different courses on our products, fiber optic cable splicing and measurement
