community with its generosity of spirit andvaluing of diversity. This is Australia at its best.

I want to thank our students. You are amazingand thoughtful human beings. Your concernfor others, and the planet, gives me confidencein the future. Be brave! Live fully. Make themost of each day and every opportunity.

I want to thank the members of this vibrant, nurturing community. You have addedimmeasurably to life at BSW. You are aformidable force that makes each of us ourbest selves.

I want to thank my colleagues, the outstandingBSW staff. Your dedication, professionalexpertise and commitment to continuallyimprove our programs have been an essentialpart of BSW’s success. I have been proud towork with you.

Two last thoughts:

State education is a public good. Cherish it.

As a nation, we glorify elite sports people.Imagine if we acknowledged and celebratedexcellence in all fields.

Thank you to all the students for a trulymemorable last assembly.

What next? This year I’ll take time to think, entice native birds into my small garden, stayall day in my pyjamas and read - suggested bya student at Monday’s assembly - and practisethe ancient art of change bell ringing. (I needall the practice I can get; I’m a beginner withpoor skills who wants to ring in bell towers inEngland next year.) In October I’m going toIran for a few weeks.

Finally, I wish you all, the very best for thefuture. The wellbeing of Another Great StateSchool, its students, community and staff willalways be close to my heart.

Yours sincerely,

BSW history

A few weeks ago I wrote about the Paynefamily whose story goes back to BSW’s firstdays, but not the very first which was 20th April,1927. The four older siblings transferred fromWest Brunswick Primary School*, VictoriaStreet on the 2nd May, 1927. (By the end ofthe year, 733 students had enrolled andsquashed into the RBB; one studentcommenced on 19th December!) The registershows that the Payne sisters left school, usually at the end of Year 8 for home ordomestic duties; one went on to BrunswickDomestic Arts School. Jessie Mavis and Johndid all their primary schooling at BSW,commencing in 1930 and 1932 respectively. After year 8, John went on to EssendonTechnical School. The family’s address wasfirst listed as Daly Street, later the corner ofDaly and Halpin Streets and, finally, 14 DalyStreet.

Brunswick South-West Primary School will beone hundred on 20th April, 2027.

*If you look carefully you’ll see that the HonourBoard in our Library is from Brunswick WestPrimary School which closed about 1993.

Dear children, teachers, parents, and Louise,

This year will be a memorable year for our school. Did you realise that in 2017 our school is 90 years old? Ourschool was founded in 1927, which is a pretty long time ago for a school. Imagine, some students who startedschool here in 1927 might have been soldiers in World War II. When the first people landed on the moon, in1969, our school had already been here for 42 years. Imagine, how many students have learned maths andreading and writing here, and how many teachers have taught here. They are all part of the history of thisschool. One day, all of you students, when you have finished prep and year 1 and 2 and so on and havemoved on to high school, will be part of the history of this school as well.

So it will be with you, Louise. Being a principal for 22 years is a long time to be part of this school. At thismoment, when you are preparing to say goodbye to us, we already know that you will be a huge part of thehistory of this school. And so much of what we like about this school, and what we as parents like about thisschool, has been the result of your decisions, and your leadership and hard work.

I have never met a more vocal advocate for state education than you, Louise, but it was never just aboutwords, but about action. After all, the best publicity for state education is to be an excellent state school. Youhave made it your life's work to ensure our children had a high quality state education. The standard you set atthis school is the standard we as parents have now come to expect, but can never take for granted.

Louise, as a principal you have always had both your eyes on the future. Looking for opportunities, looking fornew initiatives to constantly improve teaching. You always encouraged the teachers in this school to do thesame. I can't mention every single initiative but I will name a few that took place just in the last few years.

In 2014, you signed Brunswick South West up to be a Resource Smart School, and you supported theinitiatives to make the school more sustainable in lots of different ways. We now have solar panels on the roofof the hall, and take rubbish free lunches to school. In the process you have shown everyone the way tobecome responsible global citizens.

You have also supported the introduction of the Kids Matter program in 2015. This program works with ourchildren to support their social and emotional development and helps hem to become resilient and responsiblesocial beings. Again, skills they need in this rapidly evolving global environment.

And of course in 2016 Chinese was introduced into our language program. That was certainly a big change butone that has opened up the lives of our children to a culture that is completely new to them. I have no doubtthis will help to truly open their eyes to the world.

This characterises you Louise, always outward looking and always moving with the times. You have openedthe classrooms to academic research and have worked with at least 3 universities. You worked with RMITyears ago, and there is an ongoing collaboration with Gaye Williams from Deakin University on collaborativegroup problem-solving maths. We have pre-service teachers coming from the University of Melbourne.

Lastly, your work ethic puts everyone else to shame. There must have been so many days when you were thefirst to come in the morning, and the last to turn off the lights and lock the door at night, only to come back induring the weekends to get some more work done. You would go to working bees. You would come along toschool camps. You would sit with a child in sick bay. You would pick up rubbish. You would always bid forartworks at the fete and the kids arts show auctions. And, you have read every single school report of everysingle student coming to this school for 22 years. I calculated that you must have read over 13,000 schoolreports over the years!

Louise, I want to thank you on behalf of all of us for your life's work. I hope you feel a strong sense ofachievement. I wish you all the delights of retirement for many years to come, like reading books, and travel, not to mention sleeping...

As a school community, we will cherish your big part in this school's history. But, just like you we will also keepour eyes to the future. This year, a new principal will be appointed and we will be ready to add a new chapter tothe history of this school. This school has been here for 90 years, and will no doubt be here for at least another90 years. We will make every effort to appoint a new principal with the same passion, drive and vision, and takethis great state school further along the road that you travelled with us. Thank you Louise!

The In-between Years. A Reading List.

The in-between years. You know the ones ... they've grown out of Enid Blyton(but still love to sneak in to them every now and again!), but aren't quite mature enough for allthe delights that YA literature has to offer.

What books should they head for?

Here are my top fiction recommendations for the aged 11+ category, all recent releases. Great reads;challenging, warm and gripping.

The Murder Most Unladylike series - new to the scene from author Robin Stevens. Murder mysteriessolved by two female friends who go to boarding school together. The setting changes with each book;fabulous mysteries, great plots and intriguing characters. Book 3 is already out, with more in the pipeline.

Anyone But Ivy Pocket - a quirky and very unlikely heroine. Elements of mystery, adventure and fantasy.

Scarlet Ibis from the talented Gill Lewis, a wonderfully touching novel about the relationship between asister and her younger brother.

The Secret Hen House Theatre - wholesome adventure novel set on a farm. Highly recommended. There's a sequel too.

Counting by 7s - Willow's adoptive parents are killed in a car crash. Surrounded by a range of delightfullyquirky characters she learns to trust again in order to rebuild her life.

Maggot Moon - this multi-award winning dystopia novel from Sally Gardner features dyslexic StandishTreadwell struggling to survive in Zone 7.

The Meaning of Maggie - this is 12 year old Maggie's journal. Confident, likeable Maggie whose dad hasdeveloped MS. Comedic moments intertwined with realism - a compelling read.

Looking At The Stars - when civil war breaks out 13 year old Amina must flee her country. Heading to arefugee camp, this is her story. Expertly told.

Whale Boy - Michael is in a race against time to save the first whale to enter the ocean near Liberty inmany years. A wonderfully lyrical and atmospheric tome.

Rooftoppers - Sophie is determined to find her mother. Her quest takes her to Paris, where shediscovers a whole new world ... on the roof tops. Magical, poignant and compelling.

On Friday 24/3/17 the 5/6’s went to Clifton Park for Interschool Sports. The sports were: Lacrosse, Touch footy and Tee-ball. There were 7 schools versing us.

Touch footy

Some people went to touch footy and those people were split into 2 teams. Each team played 3 games, team 1 won 3 and drew one game and team 2 won 2 out of 3 oftheir games.

Lacrosse

Some people also did lacrosse and there were also 2 teams. One of the teams had 2 wins out of 3 games. And the other team lost 2 out of 3.Everybody thought that it was fair and even if they did not win they had fun.

Tee ball

Tee-ball at Interschool Sports was really fun. Those people in Tee-ball played 4 games atGillien oval. The first game was a draw, the second game they won, the third game they lostand in the last game they won so they won 2 games overall.

It was a great day to meet people and have fun!
