Current Events Have you ever eaten burnt toast? If you have, it probably tastes bad, and now, scientists

are saying that it is also bad for you. Burnt toast and over-roasted potatoes have a chemical that is made during cooking, called acrylamide, that scientists think can lead to cancer if you have too much of it. The effects have not been proven in humans yet, but scientists still believe that it can lead to cancer. So, whenever you are making some toast at home, don’t burn it!

7th Grade Update:

Mrs. Lesher’s 7th grade Reading classes recently finished their fictional book projects. Mrs. Lesher’s third and fourth period class had to find the main problem in the book that they chose. After reading, they had to plan, and design a solution to the main character’s problem. They finalized the project by going to the Design Thinking Lab to create solutions that would solve the main character’s conflict.

Mr. Koopman and Mr. Kinnison’s 7th grade classes recently finished creating their Rube

Goldberg machines. Students had to build a project consisting of two or more simple machines and three or more steps. They had to connect 8-10 projects which proved more difficult than it may sound. The students had to add more machines to their combined project. They split into groups and spent a week and a half connecting and adding to their machines.

Advice

Q. Dear Maurice Fernandez. I have been dealing with a lot of stress with sports, and when my practices are over I am

really tired. I can't find the energy to do my homework. What should I do? -Sports Player

A. Dear Sports Player,

I would suggest to do your homework right after dinner. That way you have a new burst of energy. This will allow you to get your homework done and help you get more energy after practice. If you have a game and get home late then save some homework for the morning or for fifth period.

Q. Dear Maurice Fernandez, My parents have been getting on me to practice for band, but the only time I can practice

is on the weekend and even then I can only practice a few minutes. What should I do? -Student in a Tight Place

A. Dear Student in a Tight Place,

A suggestion is to create more time for yourself. If you have a practice then I get that you can’t miss it, but maybe instead of hanging out with your friends 24/7, stay home and practice. I realize you might not want to do this, but if you need to practice then this is one way to create time.
