The Auburn Montgomery softball team welcomes the return of 12 letterwinners from last season’s 46-9 team, nine of which started games for the team. The Warhawks will use a mix of returning talent, and skilled newcomers as the team has won back-to-back national championships. From the previous years roster, the Warhawks have lost a total of nine impact players, that played in 40 games or more. The main contributors being NAIA Pitcher of the Year Cassie Jones, and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention Katie Spain. The pair finished-off a senior year to remember claiming the title for the second consecutive year, but looking forward the Warhawks will have some big shoes to fill. “I think it is important to recognize who you are as a team, and go from there,” head coach Eric Newell said. “We know we can be a dangerous team, and I think we do have the capabilities to repeat again. We have a lot of players that played secondary roles last season, that will have to take on a leadership role and step into the spotlight. Our kids know how to win and have the experience being in those games to do so. I have told the girls we have the skills to accomplish that goal once again, and I am interested to see how the season plays out.” The Warhawks will lean on the talents of returners such as Kayla Hale, Jennifer Jenkins and Hayden Henderson, who all had individual roles last season. Hale was seleced a First-Team All-Southern States Athletic Conference member, and is the only returner to see action in all 55 games. She finished second on the team in batting average with a .383 showing, and was also second on the team in homeruns with 11 and RBIs with 46. Hale added 15 multiple-hit games with 10 multi-RBI showings. “Kayla has been an important part of this team from a production stand point her entire career,” said Newell. “She isn’t used to being in the spotlight, but I told her that for us to be succesful she must take a primary role on this team.” Jenkins, who appeared in 42 games and started in 17, will enter the season at shortstop. She has

contributed both defensively and offensively for the Warhawks, and will look to help the team with her leadership this year. “Jenn is a very vocal leader for our team, and brings a wealth of experience to the table,” Newell said. “She continues to support her teammates and is always working hard at practice to improve. She pushes herself on and off the field, and will have more of a leadership role this season.” Henderson was named to the SSAC All-Freshman team last year after picking up 27 starts on the year. She also added 32 hits and 21 runs scored as she increased her playing time in the outfield as the season went on. “Hayden was huge for us last year, and playe a pretty significant role as a freshman,” Newell stated. “She has good speed and gets a great jump on the ball in the outfield. She gets on base a lot and allows her teammates to hit with a runner on base.” Additionally, seniors Taylor Powell and Katie Brinkman, both return to add leadership and experience. Powell was named an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention her sophomore Powell finished last season with a 2.63 ERA and a 9-2 record with 16 appearances. She added 100 strikeouts as she earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Brinkman started in 44 games last season, and appeared in 48. She posted a .958 fielding percentage and added 26 hits with 29 RBIs. “Taylor is a rare pitcher that will hit for herself this season,” said Newell. “She is a tenacious leader, and has continued to hit extremely well throughout the fall. Her leadership extends to within the circle as we will rely on her consistency.” “Katie knows what needs to be done, and is never afraid to push herself,” Newell continued. “Her and Jen have fantastic chemistry up the middle of the infield. She seemed to always get the big hit in the big moments, and is truly a gamer.” Junior catcher Sarah Angulo will return behind the dish, and will look to move into a starting role this season. She added 11 hits in 12 starts last season. “Sarah has proven herself in the fall, and will be

our starting catcher moving into the spring,” Newell said. “She has a tremendous arm behind the plate, and has really worked to better all areas of her game. She is a very good defensive catcher, but will help our lineup with her bat as well.” Sophomores Rose Schmidt and Amy Persinger will also have a key impact on the team. While both players played minor roles a season ago, both of the youngsters will appear in the starting lineup in the spring for the Warhawks. “We feel like Rose can have a big role in the lineup this season offensively,” Newell said. “She has shown that she can hit the ball extremely well, and she continues to push herself with her work ethic to always improve.” “Amy will have her chance this season to really show off what she can do,” he added. “She has consistently shown she can be in the starting lineup with her play in center, but also with the way she has worked to improve her skills.” The roster will be rounded out by senior outfielder Paige Nielsen, as well as junior second baseman Marisa Magnuson, outfielder Claire Wilson and first baseman Victoria Creamer. Nielsen added a double and an RBI in limited plate appearances last season, while Magnuson saw 17 at bats as a sophomore with seven runs scored and four hits. Wilson and Creamer will look to increase their contributions to the team this season. “Paige adds a lot of depth to our outfield with her ability and experience,” said Newell. “She has been around the winning atmosphere, and can help a lot of the younger outfielders.” “Marisa is a true teammate,” Newell said. “She is willing to do whatever she possibly can to help the team out, and pushes our infielders to better themselves. She is extremely fast, and runs the bases well, and I think she can contribute this year.” ”Victoria has been in the program for two years, and always steps up to help the team however she can,” said Newell. “Her positive attitude keeps the team humble.” “Claire has done a nice job transitioning to the outfield,” Newell added. “She will continue to add to the depth of our outfield with her knowledge of the postseason.”

Allie Krueger, an all-state outfielder and pitcher that set eight season records and two career records for the program from Monett, Mo., and Karoline Thomas, an all-state offensive outfielder, will compete for playing time and are expected to see action as the only two true freshmen. “Allie brings a very nice dynamic to our team, and is very consistent at the plate,” Newell said. “She will not only see playing time in the outfield, but also in the circle. She shows a lot of maturity in the way she plays the game, and I think she will fight for some playing time this season. We know that she can both hit and pitch, and hope to see her skills improve as the season goes on.” “Karoline gives us great depth as she is a true athlete, or utility player,” said Newell. “She can play just about every position on the field, and she can play each position well. She looks more comfortable in the outfield, but has no problem stepping onto the infield if we need her to. She has shown that she can be a true teammate and come in to help in any situation.” The Warhawks add three newcomers in juniors Rachel Ragland and Sydney Dishman, who both had stellar careers at junior colleges. Sophomore Catie Burleson is the final addition to the roster, as she transfered to AUM from Williams Baptist. Ragland was named the Alabama Sports Writer’s Association Community College Player of the Year and was also the Alamaba Community College Conference Player of the Year after recording a 25-7 record with a 1.32 earned run average with 210 strikeouts for Wallace State in Hanceville, Ala. “Rachel will have a steady starting spot on the team this year, because of her ability to both hit and play the field,” Newell added. “She contributes with her bat, but can also really help us out in the circle this season. Both Powell and Hale will help with a lot of innings of production, but I think Rachel can work her way into the lineup and really add a lot of depth to our pitching staff.” Dishman posted a .388 batting average last season for Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and set a new school record for 16 home runs in a season. Dishman also set career marks in total home runs (29) and RBIs (108).

“Sydney will help our team both offensively and defensively this season,” Newell said. “She offers a rare bread of athlete that can play multiple positions, but can still help the team in every position. We have considered her for being a catcher, but she has shown the ability to play first base if we need her to.”

“I have always been the kind of coach to manufacture runs, but this team can put up runs and put them up in a hurry. I have had to adapt my coaching strategies to compliment this team and luckily we have had these few weeks during the preseason to make those adjustments. We have a late start for a school in the Southeast, but that has been a blessing for them to adjust to me and for me to adjust to them.” In the circle, Powell will compete with Hale, Ragland and Krueger for time and innings. Both Hale and Powell picked up a combined 11 wins on 145 strikeouts. The pair threw 128 innings last year with both players earning less than a 3 ERA. “Taylor has really worked hard in the offseason and in the fall,” said Newell. ”She has taken a huge leap from last year to this year, and I think she has really taken control of being the number one pitcher for us. She complimented Cassie last season, but has worked hard to create her own legacy here with the program.” “Kayla has continued to impress us and her ability to compete in the circle,” continued Newell. “She adds a different dynamic being from the left side, and threw extremely well this fall. I think Kayla adds to the threat our pitchers bring to the table of being able to hit for themselves, and hit well.” “Both Allie and Rachel are new to the program, but I have confidence in both of them to compete with Kayla and Taylor every day, “ Newell added. “Rachel has a lot of experience at the college level, and will use that this year for us. Allie has the experience against talented hitters, and I am excited to see this group compete with each other. The team knows the difficulties involved in winning a National Championship, and how

winning the title in back-to-back years is a major accomplishment. However, just because everyone on the team understands these odds, the Warhawks are not afraid to set the bar high.“Moving forward, we lost seven starters from last years team, but I think our girls are very capable of doing it again, “Newell stated. “We have a lot of girls that had secondary roles last year, and they will have to step into more primary roles this season. Our team will be very dangerous this season, and despite the question marks, our girls still bring a lot of skills and experience to the table.” The team is aware of the challenges ahead, but know that the goal can be achieved. Winning a National Championship is the final goal for every student athlete, and the team is aware of the challenes they will face during the season, and are ready to meet them head on. “I believe in both verbal and non-verbal leadership, and I think we have the personnel to step upz,” Newell concluded. “As the defending national championship, every team we play is going to be looking to defeat us. We cannot take anyone lightly in our non-conference slate and especially in conference play. It is very well known that the Southern States Athletic Conference is an elite softball conference, so we cannot take a day off. I am excited about the things that we have been able to do during the preseason, but I am really looking forward to getting the season started. I know our team is too.”

In his first season with the Warhawks, Newell posted a 46-9 overall record, and finished 24-2 in the Southern States Athletic Conference as he lead the team to its second consecutive NAIA National Championship. Newell picked up his 300th career win in the National Championship Game after falling to Lindsey Wilson in the first game. The team responded to win 10-0 in the sixth inning to claim the title. Additionally, Newell was named the SSAC and NAIA Coach of the Year for his efforts. Newell helped lead the team to back-to-back championships, and also coached the NAIA National Player of the Year in Cassie Jones, who was also named an NAIA All-American, the SSAC Pitcher of the Year and was an NAIA Scholar Athlete. Helping the team reach their ultimate goal, the team also earned seven All-Conference members, five SSAC All-Academic members and one additional NAIA Scholar Athlete. Following a stellar eight-year career at William Baptist College, Eric Newell was hired as the second head softball coach in the program’s history on Dec. 16, 2014. During his tenure with the Lady Eagles, Newell posted a 254-121 record, setting the school record for wins and winning percentage. He led the squad to a pair of NAIA National Tournament appearances, including a fourth-place finish in 2013. His teams have spent 26 weeks ranked in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, climbing as high as No. 4 in the rankings. The Lady Eagles were ranked inside the top 10 for 10 editions. Prior to his arrival at WBC, the softball program experienced nine consecutive losing seasons. Newell has guided the program to four consecutive American Midwest Conference championships from 2010-13 and been selected the conference coach of the year four times. He has coached five NAIA All-Americans, eight NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 37 all-conference selections and 102 academic all-conference performers. He finished .500 or better in seven seasons, winning 30 or more games five times. In 2013, the Lady Eagles finished 46-9 and advanced to Bracket Play at the NAIA National Tournament. During the season, Williams Baptist won 19 consecutive games and finished 16-2 in the AMC. After dropping an extra-inning contest to Rogers State in Pool Play, the Lady Eagles rallied and defeated the Hillcats in an elimination, and if-necessary, game to qualify for the bracket round of the tournament. Once in the final round, the Lady Eagles defeated former Southern States Athletic Conference power Lee University and perennial power Reinhardt. The season prior, Williams Baptist finished with a school-record 51 victories, at one point winning 16 straight games. In addition to finishing the AMC regular-season with a 15-1 record, the Lady Eagles also won the conference tournament. Prior to his arrival at WBC, Newell spent five years coaching at Fredericktown High School in Fredericktown, Mo., where he started the softball program.

Newell earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Williams Baptist, while earning his master’s from William Woods University. He and his wife, April, have five daughters: Gabriella, Juliana, Adalynn, Jillian and Jacqueline.

2016 Coaching Staff

Scottie Wilkes will begin her fourth season on the AUM coaching staff and her fourth year as an assistant coach in 2016. Last season, Wilkes helped the Warhawks to the NAIA World Series National Championship in 2014 and 2015, and was a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Coaching Staff of the Year the past two seasons.

She spent two seasons with the Faulkner softball program after two years at Jeff State CC in Birmingham. In her senior season with the Lady Eagles, Wilkes started all 43 games, hitting .298 with a .413 on-base

percentage, eight doubles and two home runs. Her 29 RBIs were second-best on the team. Academically, Wilkes was Faulkner’s 2011 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She earned first team all-conference and NAIA honorable mention recognition in 2010 after finishing with a .344 batting average, 13 doubles, three home runs and 39 RBIs. Her .494 on-base percentage was best among Faulkner starters. In her two seasons at Jeff State, she hit a combined .320 with 23 doubles, five home runs and 51 RBIs. Wilkes also played volleyball while at Faulkner. She is working towards her master’s degree in physical education at AUM.

Chancellor Dr. John G. Veres III

Dr. John G. Veres III became the first alumnus appointed Chancellor of Auburn University at Montgomery in 2006. A Montgomery native, he graduated from Montgomery Catholic High School in 1972 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from AUM in 1976 and 1978, respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Auburn University in 1983. First hired by AUM in 1976 as a Research and Training Assistant, Veres was promoted over the next 30 years to several positions of increasing responsibility, including Director

of the AUM Center for Business and Economic Development (October 1982-March 2000) and Executive Director of University Outreach (March 2000-June 2006) until the Auburn Board of Trustees named him Chancellor. Veres has more than 35 years of experience as an organizational consultant. He has published some 50 articles and book chapters, two edited volumes and one book on human resources management topics. He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, primarily on issues of adverse impact and test validation, and currently serves as Special Master for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. In the community, Veres currently serves on the boards of the Alabama-Korea Education and Economic Partnership, Alabama World Affairs Council, AUM Confucius Institute, Auburn University Foundation, Committee of 100, Helicity, and the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. He has served on the boards of the Alabama Technology Foundation, Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery, Montgomery Area YMCA, and the River Region United Way. He has been appointed to the Alabama Governor’s College and Career-Ready Task Force and the Governor’s Commission for Action in Alabama’s Black Belt, and he served as a technical advisor to the Alabama Commission on Government Accountability. He is a recipient of the H. Roe Bartle Presidential Leadership Award from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. Veres and his wife of 36 years, Beth Sullivan Veres, have three children – Erin, Johnny and Olivia – and two grandchildren, Cole and Lena.

Director of Athletics First Year

Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was been named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the past 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating

budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop, Herlihy served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo for seven years. While at Montevallo, Herlihy guided the Falcons through a transition from the Gulf South Conference to their current home, the Peach Belt Conference, while also overseeing the 15 athletic programs, 42 employees, more than 300 student-athletes and seven facilities. He spearheaded the fund raising and construction of three new facilities on campus and improved the Annual Fund by more than 200 percent. Herlihy was also responsible for the addition of five varsity sports at Montevallo. Competitively, the Falcons captured six conference championships and finished as conference runners-up eight times. The school qualified for the NCAA Tournament 15 times under his leadership. Montevallo posted its best finishes in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings under his guidance. Six student-athletes earned All-American status, while three were named Academic All-Americans. Montevallo also produced its first-ever conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Herlihy was an instrumental leader in a period of substantial growth at Montevallo. Under his direction, the Falcons increased their student-athlete population by more than 100 percent, while maintaining a strong tradition on the fields of competition and in the classroom. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. The department of athletics was a national finalist for the 2014 NCAA DII Award of Excellence and was recognized by the Peach Belt Conference for community engagement initiatives three times. Herlihy has served on the NCAA DII Management Council, as well as been a member of the NCAA DII Finance & Planning Committee and DII Identity & Branding Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and has served on the Board of Directors for the DII Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of both the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) and the Collegiate Event & Facility Management Association (CEFMA). Before leading the staff at Montevallo, Herlihy served as an Assistant Athletic Director at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. There, he oversaw all aspects of the financial operations and external relations, while supervising five teams. He has worked in revenue-generating positions in the Major League Baseball front offices for both the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, where he served as the General Manager of the Clearwater Phillies and the Charlotte Rangers, respectively. He also spent time as the Assistant General Manager of the Nashville Sounds Minor League Baseball team. Herlihy earned his bachelor’s degree from Plymouth State University, before completing his master’s degree in sports management at the University of Alabama. He also completed the Sports Management Institute’s executive education program, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame and University of Georgia, in 2011. Herlihy and his wife, Peggy, are the parents of two children – daughter Elizabeth, a student at South Florida, and son TJ, a student at South Alabama.

The SSAC and NAIA

Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2014-15 academic year marks the 15th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 67 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 39 years, AUM has claimed 23 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a primary avenue of communication between student-athletes, the university, and Athletics administration. The SAAC provides a forum in which student-athletes and Department of Athletics leadership can discuss openly issues relevant to intercollegiate athletics including student-athlete welfare. The SAAC group consists of a diverse representation of two representatives from each institutional sport and cheerleading.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESS: The AUM Department of Athletics takes pride in the success that its teams enjoy on their respective fields of play. AUM currently offers 10 varsity sports, as well as a co-ed cheerleading squad. To date, AUM has won 23 NAIA National Championships, 13 in women’s tennis, nine in men’s tennis and one in softball. Additionally, 22 times teams have finished as national runners-up. Individually, a student-athlete has been named to a NAIA All-America team 423 times and 123 times a student-athlete has been named a NAIA Scholar Athlete for their work in the classroom. AUM teams have won a combined 100 conference or district championships and made 98 NAIA National Tournament appearances.
