letter from the associate provost
Every year, I personally get excited to read through our annual report and this year is no different. Some successes that really stick out to me this year include:
1. The number of students engaged in Center for Applied Research projects went from 27 to 191 in one year, a 707 percent increase!
2. We saw a 7 percent increase in service learning courses offered at USI and a 41 percent increase in the number of community partners involved in service learning activities.
3. Our College Achievement Program continues to prosper with significant increases in students and credit hours delivered in 2017 compared to the previous year.
4. Amazingly, when calculating the number of individuals and organizations that were involved with Outreach and Engagement programs, we were involved with 79,968 total engagements for the 2016-17 year!
These accomplishments, as well as others, are highlighted in this year’s annual report. They are a testament to the hard, dedicated work of our Outreach and Engagement staff, as well as faculty, staff, students, community partners and other constituents who support our programs. I thank each and every person who has played a role in our work over the past year, and on behalf of Outreach and Engagement, we look forward to working with you to enhance the needs of individuals, organizations and communities in the coming year and beyond. I hope you enjoy this annual report as much as I do.
With much gratitude,
Dr. Mark C. Bernhard Associate Provost for Outreach and Engagement
“The Opportunity Development team continues to create value by finding new ways to connect faculty, staff and students to regional and state needs. Over 300 partners and clients have benefited this year by accessing unique assets and expertise to help enhance their mission and at the same time we are bringing experiential and funding opportunities to our academic environment, contributing to build ‘knowledge for life.’ Impact of our work this past year ranges from assisting over 30 start-ups, creating nine new jobs, enhancing workforce skills for over 2,500 individuals, engaging close to 200 students and 85 faculty members in providing consulting services, helping develop our regional brainpower pipeline and assisting the NSWC Crane innovation ecosystem, which resulted in an invitation to brief the Office of the Vice President.”

“I remain in awe of our committed team persistently developing capacity to adapt and thrive in our fast-changing environment. Three noteworthy achievements aimed at our goal of purposeful and sustainable growth are in the areas of:
1) Student enrollment, as our College Achievement Program enrolled 19% more students from regional high schools than the prior year.
2) Veteran support, as the Veteran, Military and Family Resource Center facilitated a 56% increase in veteran benefit-receiving students.
3) In reputation, by celebrating the 11th consecutive year that the Southern Indiana Japanese School won the School Award in Writing from Japan Overseas Educational Services.”

VETERAN, MILITARY AND FAMILY RESOURCE CENTERVMFRC
Going beyond the traditional role of certifying veterans to receive educational benefits, the VMFRC engages in collaborative efforts on campus and in the community, like supporting the USI Student Veterans Association and the Brock Babb American Legion Post 324 and Team Red White and Blue (RWB); involvement in the community Veterans Day parade and on-campus commemoration; working with the USI Dental Hygiene Clinic to provide free services to veterans; and sponsoring programs related to mental health services for veterans and service members.
SOUTHERN INDIANA JAPANESE SCHOOL SIJS
SIJS provides a high-quality education to children of Japanese companies’ employees living in the southwest Indiana region. The Saturday school prepares students to integrate smoothly into Japanese schools when they return home. SIJS hires teachers through the unique SIJS/USI exchange program using sister city relationships between Evansville and Tochigi City, Japan, as well as sister university relationships between USI and Tsukuba University in Japan.
RESERVE OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS ROTC
Students enrolled in the USI Army ROTC program are expected to perform in the classroom, maintain a high level of physical fitness and develop leadership and communication skills, which mirrors the cadet motto of “Scholar-Athlete-Leader.” Students may commission into the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and serve on active duty, in the Army Reserves or National Guard. USI Army ROTC students are actively engaged in the community by participating in the Norwegian Foot March and leadership development opportunities.

“Community Engagement continues to seek creative partnerships to maximize our resources and improve the services we provide to our constituents. In 2017, Connect with Southern Indiana, a leadership development program, tapped New Harmony Conversations, a grass roots organization dealing with Advanced Care Planning, to serve as its client. Connect participants developed projects which revolved around innovative ways to get more people involved in the advanced care planning process and presented them to the group. New Harmony Conversations began as a project funded by a New Harmony Outreach and Engagement faculty grant. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art also started holding interactive workshops, such as watercolor painting, which brought new audiences to the gallery and participants left with a finished product.”
