Traceability &Consumer SafetyAs an initiative to enhance supply chainperformance, improve consumer safety,combat the risk of counterfeiting ofpremium products, GS1 Malaysiaparticipated in the APEC Global DataStandards pilot project on DurianTraceability. The project has successfullydemonstrated the possibility of cross-border trading traceability can beachieved by using the GS1 standardssupported by the EPCIS data sharingplatform to improve the Musang KingDurian supply chain from Malaysia toChina and Hong Kong. The results ofthe project has also indicated asignificant improvement in the overallsupply chain performance.

Additional New Services In addition to the above key initiatives,under the year of review, GS1 Malaysiahas rolled out new services andinitiatives to assist our subscribers tostay competitive, adapt to newbusiness challenges and to complywith regulatory requirements.

Last but not least, GS1 Malaysia iscommitted to strive and stride toprepare Malaysian businesses toimprove efficiency, safety and securityin the new digital era, which speed,agility and accuracy are the criticalfactors affecting today’s business.

HealthcareIn keeping up with Ministry ofHealth (MOH)’s initiative on track andtrace on pharmaceutical products,GS1 Malaysia, in collaboration withCaring Pharmacy Retail Sdn Bhdand Duopharma Malaysia Sdn Bhdsuccessfully completed a HealthcareTrial Project. The projectdemonstrated to all stakeholdersthat effective track and trace ofproducts from the manufacturersthrough the distributor to the retailerby using GS1 2D Datamatrix.

Based on the survey conducted withCaring consumers at the CaringDiabetes Awareness Workshop,100 % of the consumers respondedthat it is important for brand ownersto provide the product informationwhich will influence their purchasedecision. With the above findings,GS1 Malaysia will further encouragethe adoption of GS1 Standards andthe 2D Data Matrix barcode, as partof our initiative to improve visibilityand to promote traceability in theHealthcare supply chain and to meetthe regulatory requirements.

GS1 Malaysia continued to promote and facilitate the implementation ofGS1 standards in multiple sectors and industries in Malaysia. The numberof users of the GS1 Standards in Malaysia has steadily increased sincethe system was introduced into Malaysia in 1988.

GS1 Industry Track andTrace Project with Caringand CCMGS1 Malaysia in collaboration withCaring Pharmacy Retail Sdn Bhd andDuopharma Malaysia Sdn Bhdchampioned a Healthcare TrailProject to provide all thestakeholders in the supply chain fullvisibilityof pharmaceutical productsmovement.

The Project has been completed andhas effectively demonstrated effectivetrack and trace by using the GS1 2DDatamatrix with GS1 identificationkeys, expiry date and batch number,from the manufacturer to the retailer.

The benefits are as follows:

• Optimal control of inventoryand stock

• Able to make informedmanagement decisions based oneasy & reliable information obtained

• Reduce wastages

The Healthcare Trial Project waspresented to PhAMA (PharmaceuticalAssociation of Malaysia); MOPI(Malaysian Organisation ofPharmaceutical Industries); PSD, MOH(Pharmaceutical Services Division,Ministry of Health); NPRA, MOH(National Pharmeceutical RegulatoryAgency, Ministry of Health); Caring

• Contributed to combat and reducethe risk of counterfeiting byenabling authentication of productby the consumers.

This pilot project has successfullydemonstrated the possibility ofcross-border trading traceabilitycan be achieved by using theGS1 standards supported by theEPCIS data sharing platform toimprove the Musang King Duriansupply chain from Malaysia toChina and Hong Kong.

In conjunction with the APECworkshop co-organised by HongKong, China (HKC) and New Zealandon August 23, 2017 in Ho Chi MinhCity, Vietnam, an experience sharingsession by stakeholders on pilotprojects was organised as part of theongoing efforts to improve supplychain connectivity in the APECregion. The Malaysian Durian projectwith the adoption of GS1 standardsand keys was one of the GDS pilotprojects shared at the workshop.

APEC Demonstrator projectThe objectives of the APEC GlobalData Standards pilot project on DurianTraceability are to demonstrate thegreater use of GS1 standards andkeys to achieve better visibility andrisk management processes in theinternational supply chain canimprove Malaysian exports to Chinaand Hong Kong. Specifically, theproject aimed to:

• Improve consumer safety.

• Improve supply chain efficiency.

• Demonstrate the added valueto industry, customs, healthauthorities/food safety authoritiesfor multi jurisdiction productidentification and visibility.

Beer Traceability ProjectGS1 Malaysia had numerousdiscussions with Heineken MalaysiaSdn Bhd on the proposed traceabilityin the brewery supply chain.The initial discussion was to proposea solution to combat smuggling,contraband and illicit liquor in retailusing the unique product identifierembedded in the GS1 bar code/2DData Matrix to assist Customs tohave a greater visibility by accessingto trusted sources of productinformation. GS1 Malaysia wasinvited to collaborate with them tostudy the use of RFID cutting edgetechnologies to enhance full visibilityin beer distribution. Heineken willfurther capitalize by expanding theexisting roadmap on pallet level toinclude retail unit identification innear future.

Royal Malaysia CustomsBeer Excise Duty PayableSolution by GS1 Malaysia The proposed GS1 solutionleverages on the GS1 DataMatrixand GS1 Standards to improvethe visibility of the taxable goodssupply chain. It provides theRoyal Malaysia Customs Department(RMCD) with a wide range offunctions, such as a method totackle contraband and counterfeitalcoholic beverages, enhancethe traceability of goods frommanufacturers through wholesalers,distributors, logistic operators,and finally to the retailers. Thisinformation is useful in efficientlymanaging, controlling and securinglegitimate supply chains. It assistsenforcement authorities inidentifying who has handledsuspect products and wherethese products entered thelegitimate supply chain.

All this information can beaccessed by RMCD in real timeand would be useful in trackingand monitoring of beer enteringthe marketplace. It would be ofgreat benefit to RMCD in thecollection of excise duty as wellas in the monitoring andenforcement in the marketplace.

Inventory OptimisationIn striving to meet the stockoptimisation of each storeoperations through supply chainvisibility and efficiency, GS1 Malaysiacontinues to collaborate with themajor retailers to improve its stockefficiency by implementing GS1barcoding system on all logistic unitsto modernise and redefine itsdistribution operations.

Collaboration withMIMOS and P&G onPalm Oil Sustainabilityand Farm RegistryInitiated by the SustainabilityNetwork Initiative, GS1 Malaysia hadconnected to the P&G Palm OilSustainability team to assist theprogram embarked by P&G on thePalm Oil traceability. Together withMIMOS and MEOMA (Malaysia EdibleOil Manufacturers Association), GS1Malaysia had submitted a proposalof the implementation to P&G aftera meeting with the P&G Palm OilSustainability Team Lead.

This is to explore the possiblecollaboration with P&G on palm oilupstream sustainability initiativeusing GS1 Standards for effectivetrack and trace. The objective is toassist P&G to ensure their suppliers(planters) are in compliance with therequirements of Roundtable onSustainable Palm Oil.

Collaboration with MOHFrom the participation of YBhgDato’ Dr Haminnuddin and Dr. Ramlifrom MOH at the GS1 HealthcareConference in Berlin in April 2017, ithad created better understanding toMOH how GS1 Standards and keyscould add value to the track andtrack in Healthcare Industry. Withthat, MOH had consulted GS1Malaysia on the Terms of Referenceof National Track and TraceCommittee in preparation for theNational Track and Trace HealthcareInitiative. GS1 Malaysia had providedthe TOR and implementation stepsto MOH for their study.

GS1 Member ProductDatabank and MalaysiaDatabank AppMoving forwards and to capitalisethe existing GS1 Malaysia MemberProduct Databank, GS1 Malaysia hasdeveloped a GS1 Mobile App forconsumers/retailers/brand owner toverify authentic product information.

The Mobile App will enable accessto product and brand ownerinformation by scanning theGS1 barcode on the product.

The purpose of this app is toprovide trusted and genuine productinformation to the consumer withthe accurate information providedby brand owner of the product.This will provide more visibility andauthentication of any products scanned.This is also to support the requirementsof e-marketplace platform.

GS1 Malaysia Member Product Databankwill be the pre-requisite platform toprovide brand-authorised informationto the GS1 Cloud. The GS1 Cloud will bethe largest source of trusted productinformation in the world, making itpossible for businesses to meet theexpectations of today’s digital world.

Online GS1 MemberApplication PlatformGS1 Malaysia has implementedonline application submission onJuly 15, 2016.

The benefits of using the onlineapplication is to process the applicationefficiently and effectively by enforcethe payments, compulsory informationand documents are submitted.

It can also ensure the informationsubmitted by the subscribers areclear compared to the hand writtenform submitted manually.

As at today, the online submissionis receptive by the industry. 90% ofthe daily submissions are throughonline submission. All subscribersdocuments are stored in electronicform for easy retrieval of informationand data.

GS1 StrategicPartners ProgrammeGS1 Malaysia has launched GS1strategic partners programmeto facilitate GS1 consulting andadvisory services to GS1 subscribersand industry. The strategic partnersprogramme offers opportunitiesfor solutions providers to showcase/introduce their products and servicesto subscribers in GS1 conferences,briefings, website, newslettersand insertion of brochures inmailing, advertising opportunitieson GS1 Malaysia website.

Consulting Services The Consulting Services providecost effective advisory servicesand specialized in-house trainingto assist companies to get the bestvalue from GS1 by partnering withGS1 Strategic Partner.

Extended CustomersSupport Team –Members Support andConsultation Services GS1 Malaysia expanded itsCustomers Support Team –Members Support and ConsultationServices to provide guidance andadvice efficiently to subscribers onimplementation of GS1 standards& keys, new services and supporttheir requirements as well assolving problems.

e-Advertisement GS1 Malaysia provided GS1 subscribersthe advertisement opportunities onGS1 Malaysia website. This will providea platform for the subscribers to tapinto a captive and highly relevantaudience for business matching andincreasing awareness of brand owners’products and services.

GS1 Malaysia MyTrack A centralized platform to captureand share the Supply Chain/LogisticData within the company’s internalprocesses to improve inventorymanagement. It allows businessesto capture and share informationon the movement and status ofproducts & logistics units usingGS1 Keys and data carrier such as

GS1-128 or GS1 Data Matrixembedded with Batch No.,Production Date and Expiry Date.

Some MOs have indicated theirinterest to collaborate with GS1Malaysia to utilize the platform fortheir subscribers. GS1 Malaysia willdraw up a business model for thepossible collaboration.

Malaysia HealthcareProduct DatabankIn preparation for the industrystakeholders and consumers toaccess critical products and logisticinformation to authenticate theunique identity of the productsthrough trusted source, GS1 Malaysiaintroduced the GS1 HealthcareProduct Databank with extended

GS1 MembershipGuidelines Update– OEMGS1 Malaysia has stronglyencouraged brand owners toregister directly with GS1 to adoptGS1 Standards and keys, and toprotect their brand and have theirproduct details safely backed upon GS1 Malaysia trusted database.However, many of the brandowners outsource their productsto OEM and requested theOEM to register as GS1 member.As an added service, registrationfee will be waived for all newmembership applications by OMEwho are existing GS1 subscribers.

Barcode Inspection ServiceTo facilitate GS1 subscribers to fulfil retailer requirementsfor product identification, to meet Regulatorycompliance and to facilitate cross border tradingrequirements, GS1 Malaysia has introduced full barcodeinspection and compliance service in July 2017. Allbarcodes submitted to GS1 Malaysia for inspection issubjected to Verification, Validation and Decodingexercises. A Barcode Compliance Certificate denotinga successful inspection will be issued to the subscriber.

GS1 Malaysia Supply ChainSummit 2016The GS1 Malaysia Supply ChainSummit 2016 with the theme“Enriching Consumer Lifestyle” washeld on November 10, 2016 atConcorde Shah Alam Hotel on FoodSafety, Healthcare and Omni channel.The successful Summit was attendedby 200 participants from the retail,food and beverage, e-market placeand healthcare industries. Retailersand healthcare authorities and othergovernment agencies were also partof the attendees.

GS1 Malaysia FoodSafety InitiativeGS1 Malaysia, together with NamuraResearch Institute (NRI) & theJapanese Ministry of Agriculture,Forestry & Fishery (MAFF) organiseda Food Tasting Eventat Kampachi Japanese Restaurant,Plaza33 on 15 February 2017.

The objective of the event was tointroduce Japanese food products topotential importers in the Malaysianmarket, which will be shipped via theNaha Airport at Naha, Okinawa.

If they adopt the GS1 standards andkeys, full traceability of all theproducts shipped will then bepossible due to the use of GS1 keys &standards throughout the supplychain. Importers would be able tomake informed decisions on theproducts when they arrive.

GS1 Malaysia Food SafetyForum 2017 – Food Safetyas a Competitive AdvantageGS1 Malaysia organised a seminar onFood Safety on 13 June 2017 entitled“GS1 Malaysia Food Safety Forum2017 – Food Safety as a CompetitiveAdvantage” to create greaterawareness on how GS1 standards &keys are instrumental to food safety,to provide a platform for subscribersand non-subscribers to learn moreabout food safety in Malaysia, and todrive adoption of GS1 standards &keys. The speakers for the seminarwere colleagues from GS1 Global aswell as GS1 Malaysia, governmentagencies; FAMA and FSQ-MOH, aswell as a Certified Halal Trainer andConsultant. The participants wereupdated on global food safetyregulations and trends, local supportfor SMEs in implementing food safetypractices, halal traceability.

Survey Conducted withCaring Pharmacy CustomersGS1 Malaysia was invited toparticipate in the Caring DiabetesAwareness Workshop on 15 April2017, to conduct a survey withCaring customers. The objectiveof the survey was to understandcustomers’ concern on productinformation before making purchasedecisions. Based on the surveyconducted, 100% of the respondentsagreed that it is important forbrand owners to provide productinformation which will influence theirpurchase decision. With the abovefindings, GS1 Malaysia will furtherencourage the adoption of GS1standards and GS1 2D DataMatrix tocapture large amounts of data andinformation in the healthcare industry.

E-Commerce withAlibaba.comGS1 Malaysia met with Alibaba onassisting local SMEs to export theirproducts via e-Marketplace byproviding accurate and authenticbrand owner product informationthrough the trusted data maintainedin the GS1 Malaysia MemberProduct Databank.
