Mark Ungerer and Jim Coghlin, Sr. were business associates who became close friends. When Mark and his wife lost their 15-year-old son David to cancer, Mark launched an annual golf tournament to raise funds for cancer research and care. Jim was one of his biggest supporters. When Mark subsequently succumbed to cancer in 1995, Jim took the reins, renaming the tournament to honor Mark and David. Jim’s determination to create a lasting remembrance for Mark led him down a path that brought a startling statistic to his attention. Improvements in cancer survival rates for those aged 15 to 40 had been lagging behind all other age groups since 1975 and it was now 2005. More alarmingly was the fact that in those 30 years they had barely improved at all. A joint study by the National Institutes of Health and the Livestrong Foundation revealed that delayed diagnosis was a significant contributor to this statistic. The devastating impact of delayed diagnosis was going unnoticed. Jim and his wife Nancy and their family responded by founding 15-40 Connection to save lives through the power of early cancer detection.
Today, 15-40 Connection is advancing a New Cancer Conversation that is supported by educational tools and programming. It’s a conversation that teaches people how to recognize and act on health changes that could be early warning signs of cancer and how to work with your doctor to receive the best care. “Would you recognize a cancer symptom?” is the simple yet powerful question that begins this conversation.
The Mark and David Ungerer Gala, Auction and Golf Tournament supports this important work. It is the premier central New England fundraising event attended by more than 500 guests.

Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with determination, filled with positive energy and optimism, strength and endurance. It keeps us motivated and looking on the bright side of life. For these reasons, orange is the color of 15-40 Connection, the basis on which it was founded and the conversations it generates each and every day.

STEP 3:Share with a Doctor
2016 UNGERER GALA, AUCTION & GOLF
Andy Waplinger – When I was 17, I started to have pain when I
swallowed and noticed the lymph nodes in my neck appeared bigger than
usual. I knew this was common with strep throat so I figured it would go away
on its own. After a few weeks the symptoms remained, so I consulted my doctor.
When both my PCP and an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor weren’t sure what it
was, my mom and I pushed for more definitive answers. Exploratory surgery
revealed I had a four-inch-long mass on my thyroid with a grape-sized
cancerous tumor attached to it.
As 15-40 Connection teaches, if something about your body doesn’t seem
right, work with a doctor you are comfortable with to discover why – don’t
just make excuses and hope your problems go away.
Brian Regan – I was 18 and getting ready for sophomore year of
college. After hearing a PSA about the importance of self-exams for
testicular cancer, I figured why not check myself out. When I felt something
I swear hadn’t been there before, I made an appointment with my doctor,
who told me there was nothing there. My gut, however, was telling me
that something was wrong and I asked what we could do to be certain.
This question ultimately led to my testicular cancer diagnosis. My head
oncologist explained that my cancer was very aggressive and if I had waited
just six more months we could have been talking time, not treatment.
Recognizing a change to my health, advocating for myself and trusting my
instincts, made all the difference and I am back to living my life.
Kristine Schwenck – When I discovered a pea-sized lump in my
breast that grew in size over two weeks, I remembered the two-week rule
and consulted my doctor. He brushed it off as related to my menstrual
cycle and told me to come back in a few weeks if it was still there. Since
the lump was painful and growing quickly, I trusted my gut and got a
second opinion. While my doctor was certain it was a non-cancerous growth
because of my age, he ordered an ultrasound to be sure. Thank goodness,
because I had cancer!
My advice to all is to advocate for yourself and push for real answers. Even
though I may have felt like a hypochondriac, I now know that my concerns
were valid. 15-40 Connection’s 2-week rule could save your life too.
Katie Lee – When I think back to those first warning signs, deep
down I had a really bad feeling about the blood I saw in my stools. Even
though I was I worried about being a hypochondriac, two weeks was long
enough to wait and I knew it was better to be safe than sorry. My doctor
immediately referred me to a gastrointestinal specialist for a colonoscopy.
Doctors removed 4 polyps, the largest of which turned out to be cancerous.
I was grateful to have my cancer diagnosed at stage 1 and that I did not
need chemotherapy or radiation.
My biggest piece of advice is to listen to your body, use the 2-week rule, and
if a doctor tells you that you are too young for a particular condition, find
another doctor.
