LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERThe word of the moment in our community may just be “greater,” and I love it.

We spent much of 2015 engaged in a process of identifying a “Big 5 for the Greater Spokane Valley.” The effort was led by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce. The five initiatives that resulted are now identified as “Greater Outdoors,” “Greater Goods,” “Greater Learning,” “Greater Cures” and “Greater Vision.”

Today, the Chamber is leading the community in an effort to tackle these initiatives as we aim to take some aspects about our community that are great and make them — you guessed it — even greater. (For more on the Big 5, see page 71.)

“Greater” reflects a drive that is aspirational, further-reaching, better.

It’s fitting, then, that the guide you hold in your hands has the same objective. Three years ago, this publication was a membership directory for a somewhat internal audience of Spokane Valley Chamber members. Today, thanks to your help, it has more than quadruple the reach and has developed a reputation as a showpiece for the community. This year, we even dropped the word “directory” in favor of calling this a “guide.” While it still contains the type of kitchen-drawer information vital to conscientious local consumers, it has become so much more than a reference piece.

And you have been our secret weapon to this end:

• Your submissions: Our third annual community photography contest has produced such rich and beautiful submissions, we feature them throughout the publication, giving it the feel of an annual yearbook produced by and for the community.

• Your stories: This year more than ever, we are highlighting community heroes and talented local residents in these pages, each one contributing in their own way to the greater story of the Valley area.

• Your suggestions: This past summer, we surveyed more than 90 readers and business partners, and the feedback led to several upgrades in this year’s publication, including a brand-new section on recreation.

Like the Big 5 and other significant community efforts, you helped shape the 2016 Spokane Valley Guide. Our hope is that as you explore these pages, you will find it reflects not only our community, but the pride you feel as a part of it.

ABOUT THE GUIDE This publication is the result of a joint effort between the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and Peridot Publishing, a Liberty Lake-based company that also produces the Liberty Lake Guide and other specialty publications. This guide is intended to 1) provide useful information about amazing local businesses; 2) connect people with resources available in the community; and 3) inspire residents to take pride in the greater Spokane Valley area.

While the infrastructure of the Guide is built around members of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, advertising was made available to all businesses serving the greater community, regardless of Chamber affiliation. In addition, several pages at the beginning of each section are dedicated to honoring a few of the exceptional people and places that make the Valley such a special place to live, work and play.

INSPIRING INSTRUCTIONA decision to trade a law office for an educa-tional classroom led Robin Barnhart on a journey dedicated to helping high school students discover their passion areas and career interests.

Her unusual career path was sparked by an early interest in teaching and determined ultimately by a family crisis. A resident of the Spokane area since 1984, she’s served 16 years as an instructor and advisor at Central Valley High School.

Barnhart was one of three teachers recently awarded the Educator of the Year award by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber

of Commerce. She is known for going above and beyond for students, but when asked about it, she simply credits her effort as a love for what she does.

“I want to see students succeed in school and in life,” she said. “I’ll do whatever I can to help them do that.”

Barnhart recently took time from her busy schedule to share with The Guide about her path to pursuing a teaching career and creat-ing positive educational experiences for students.

Road to educationI had always considered a career in teaching/

coaching or law. When the time came to make a decision, I chose law. In 1998, our daughter de-veloped hemolytic uremic syndrome due to E. coli. She was gravely ill and in the hospital for almost a month. I didn’t work for that month because I lived at the hospital. I went back part time while she was still recover-ing, then back full time several months later.

The law firm I worked for could not have been more gracious and sup-portive during this entire time. But I just felt that other people were raising our kids, and law wasn’t a good fit for me. So I went back to school to

get my education degree and have never looked back!

Influential educatorsMrs. Estenson was a second mom to me. Mr. Tusler was my English teacher and a coach. Mr. Schmautz was my history teacher and basketball coach, and Mr. Wedum was my track coach. (I admire) my sister, who’s a teacher and coach in Oregon.

Robin Barnhart, center, has organized countless trips for Central Valley High School students. This photo is

from a recent DECA trip to New York City.

A full scheduleThis year, I am teaching Marketing 1, 2 and 3, Store Operations and AP Economics. In the past, I have taught Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Business Law and Personal Finance. I am the DECA advisor and have been for 16 years. I have coached basketball and track and field over the years too.

Benefits ofextra-curricularsResearch shows a positive relationship between student involvement in extra-curricular activities and academic success. These activities provide students the opportuni-ties to develop skills like teamwork, leadership, ca-maraderie, time manage-ment, responsibility, etc. In some activities, students get to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations, and it makes the learning more relevant. That’s one of my favorite characteristics of CVHS – we have a mul-titude of extra-curricular activities so there really is something for everyone.

Chamber of Commerce at its January gala.

Helping studentssucceedThe pressure on high school students today is unbelievable. They are relentlessly tested, and they are supposed to know what they want to be when they grow up at such a young age. There is little room for elective credits, which is where students have the opportunity to engage in career exploration and find their true passion.

There’s also a tre-mendous amount of pressure on students to attend four-year colleges, which is not the best choice for every student. It is very difficult for students to enter the workforce with only a high school diploma and find a high-paying job; additional education is necessary. Certification and two-year programs, apprenticeships and/or the military may be a much better option for some students – and they will not incur the crushing debt they get at a four-year college.

Working at CVHSAt CV, our mission is about learning and “excellence in all we do.” I am so thankful to be in the Central Valley School District and at CVHS with remarkable people who amaze me every day as they work toward our mis-sion and provide students incredible educational ex-periences. I can’t imagine working anywhere else!

Chamber awardIt was truly an honor and a humbling experience to receive this award because I work with such dedicated and exceptional teachers who I feel are far more deserving than I am! I am very thankful to the Valley Chamber of Com-merce for the recognition.

It takes a villageIf educators, students, parents and community members work together, we can provide the best learning environment for all of our students. We can create community partner-ships and provide students

innovative learning opportunities while maxi-mizing the use of available resources. We are already doing some of this, but I think it’s an area in which we all could grow.

“Teachers wear so many hats these days, and each student needs something different from each teacher. Ultimately, I hope we encourage students to find their passion and inspire them to take advantage of the opportunities they have so they can develop the skills necessary to become productive members of society.”

– Robin Barnhart, teacher and advisor, Central Valley High School

SPOKANE VALLEY GUIDE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

A few honorable mentions: (left to right below): Dawn Church, Dave Hodgson and Cathy Cardon

SPOKANE VALLEY | The Guide16

Page 17: 2016 Spokane Valley Guide

For over six decades Rich Batchelder has enjoyed taking photos to share with his family. The retired metals salesman decided to enter some of his work in the 2016 Spokane Valley Guide photography contest, and his image “Fishing the Spokane River” was selected as the winning entry.

Batchelder, 76, said he took the photo just upstream from the Plante’s Ferry footbridge across the river. The Spokane

Valley resident said he enjoys capturing land-scapes, wildflowers and wildlife images, but photographing his granddaughters is his favorite pastime. The Guide recently caught up with Batchelder to learn more about how his interest in photog-raphy has developed over the years.

Q: What is your equipment of choice? A: I have a Canon 50D and three lenses: 28-135mm zoom, a 75-300mm zoom and a 100mm macro. The 28-135 is probably used the most.

Q: How did you first get started in pho-tography? A: I got my first cam-era, a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye, when I was

MEET THE WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER…Rich Batchelder about 12.

I have always loved taking photos and sharing with family. I got my first 35mm camera in 1957 and have progressed from there. I joined the Spokane Valley Camera club in 1990 and still enjoy that.

Q: Are you inspired by the work of any particular photogra-phers? A: I like the works of many different pho-tographers from Ansel Adams to John Shaw. I am also inspired by my fellow photographers in the photo club.

Q: Do you have a location that you most enjoying pho-tographing?

A: A friend and I walk the Centen-nial Trail

three days a week.

We take our cameras and try photographing the many different birds that hang out along the trail, as well as wildflowers and wildlife. We go early in the morning, and it is a great way to start the day.

Q: What do you ap-preciate most about the Valley area? A: We have so much to be thankful for in the Valley – our schools, churches, parks, medical facilities, shopping, etc. And we have many opportuni-ties to be active and stay healthy. It’s a great place to live.

What makes the Spokane Valley area a pic-turesque place to live? Is it the breathtaking landscape or changing seasons? Or is it the energy and entertainment of residents gathered at a local event?

Shoot and share your images with Valley resi-dents via the Spokane Valley Guide. If you would like to be notified when the 2017 photo contest is open, please email [email protected].

SPOKANE VALLEY | The Guide

What happens when a high-end software devel-opment firm collaborates with a nonprofit for home-less women? Lives of employees and women are changed, it turns out.

In 2010, IntelliTect CEO Mark Michaelis met the founder of Hearth Homes. He felt an immediate connection with the charity, which provides housing and support to women and their children. He now serves on the board, which he helped establish.

No stranger to philan-thropy, Michaelis and his company dedicate a por-tion of profits to improving lives locally and around the world. He and other IntelliTect team members have served over the past six years to bring hope and transformation to the lives of young mothers.

The Guide recently caught up with Eric Edmonds,

IntelliTect philanthropy coordinator, and Angela Slabaugh, Hearth Homes executive director, to learn more about the connection between the two entities.

Q: How many IntelliTect employees are involved with Hearth Homes? Edmonds: IntelliTect is a company that averages about 15-20 employees. To have seven employees and members of their families volunteer with Hearth Homes is truly remarkable.

Q: In what ways does IntelliTect support the organization? Edmonds: The company has supported Hearth Homes financially since 2011 with significant gifts toward operating expenses as well as support at an-nual fundraisers. Addition-ally, employees and their families have volunteered to help with remodeling

at the home, mentoring women, babysitting, clean-ing, transporting residents and community outreach such as a holiday drive for cleaning supplies.

Q: How do Hearth Homes residents ben-efit from the relation-ship with IntelliTect? Slabaugh: IntelliTect chooses to not only help provide materials and partner financially, but their team participates in leader-ship roles on our board, volunteers to organize events and helps maintain the property. This speaks volumes to families that have never experienced a safe home environment.

Q: What does it mean to have a business such as this involved on a consistent basis?Slabaugh: IntelliTect’s ongoing relationship dem-onstrates service, engage-ment and ownership that is essential to transformation

of homelessness and poverty in our community. These issues won’t change overnight, but our team and residents are strength-ened by IntelliTect’s com-mitment to come alongside our mission long-term.

Q: IntelliTect’s com-munity involvement goes beyond Hearth Homes and into the world at large. What does the company hope to achieve by being involved with these organizations?Edmonds: IntelliTect gives not because we hope to achieve a marketing goal, but because our driving force as a company is to solve difficult problems and to make the world a better place. IntelliTect and its team give gifts of time, treasures and money in order to help others and improve our own sense of compassion, humanity and hope.

TEAMING UP FOR GOODPHOTO COURTESY OF INTELLITECT

Anne Beard, Mark Michaelis and Eric Edmonds help maintain the grounds at Hearth Homes. IntelliTect team members volunteer regularly for the non-profit that provides transitional housing for women and their children.

Renowned for Training Entrepreneurs

SESSION CONTENT AND SCHEDULE

In 2008, the Chamber Business Center became a site for the NxLeveL® Entrepreneur Training Program. Since that time, more than 150 new business entrepreneurs have successfully completed the program. This 12-week evening program is open to adults who have started or who are thinking about starting a business. NxLeveL is approved for Washington’s Self Employment Assistance Program (SEAP).

The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce offers the training under the auspices of Washington State University’s Small Business Development Center. Participants in the intensive, 36-hour program develop a business plan tailored to their own unique needs. The program is facilitated by a trained facilitator and volunteers.

Economic Impact of NxLeveLThe University of Calgary was commissioned to study the economic impact of NxLeveL’s courses. This research found that the average existing business experienced a 32 percent increase in gross sales within one year of graduation, and created 1.3 new jobs. Graduates with smaller companies (annual gross sales less than $200,000) experienced an even more dramatic success rate, with an average increase of more than 200 percent in sales.

With regard to business startups, 40 percent of participants began a business within one year of completing the course. Another 20 percent continued to work on developing their business concept. When surveyed after three years, more than 93 percent of the businesses were still in operation, whereas the national average is a mere 16.5 percent for the same time period. The survey also showed that the majority of NxLeveL participants used the business plan they created during the course to obtain business financing.

The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber adopted the following legislative priorities, which underscore our commitment to nurture and safeguard the vitality of the Greater Spokane Valley region.

Improve the Competiveness of Our Business Climate1. Bridging the Valley – The access of industrial zone land, transportation of goods and the timely performance of emergency service providers are significantly enhanced by providing for grade separations of automobile/rail intersections.

2. Transportation Funding Request-Barker Road/BNSF Grade Separation (overpass/underpass) – Our community’s highest priority Bridging the Valley project, funding the remaining $19.5 million construction of a $29.2 million grade separation of the BNSF line near Barker and Trent Roads, will provide the necessary access to over 500 acres of industrial land, contributing over $2 billion in economic output to our region and state.

3. Community Empowerment Zones – Expanding the CEZ to the Spokane County wide boundary helps our community attract employers necessary to meet our ever-evolving technological capabilities, including those in the health care, aviation and other emerging market sectors.

4. Workers Compensation – We encourage our state’s legislature and governor to initiate reforms to encourage efficiencies in both cost and performance, increasing our communities’ and state’s business climate and competitiveness.

5. Current Minimum Wage – Our Chamber supports the current minimum wage legislation as being a fair total compensation package providing for a level of work effort, complexity, accommodation for youth and other training.

6. Nuisance Abatement Lien Priority Amendment – Our Chamber supports the City of Spokane Valley’s efforts to modify existing statutes pertaining to nuisance properties, thus allowing that city and other cities to improve their ability to provide for safe, healthy and hazard-free neighborhoods.

Community Projects:Rail Traffic Emergency Preparedness – Our Chamber urges our elected officials to collaborate with rail carriers to improve emergency preparedness and provide for funding for training and equipment.

Education:We encourage our state legislators and governor to collaborate and lead all efforts to meet our state’s duty to provide for the funding of public education pursuant to its duties under the state constitution, appropriately considering the state’s revenues, differences in the state’s geographical areas, local operational costs, capital costs and local revenue capabilities and therefore providing for appropriate levy equalization.

DevelopmentThe name “Centennial” refers to the trail’s initial construction period, which occurred between 1989 and 1991 soon after the Washington State Centen-nial. It took a coordinated effort by state, county and local jurisdictions to complete the trail. In 1991, Friends of the Centen-nial Trail (FCT) became a non-profit dedicated to the development, operation, maintenance and enhance-ment of the Spokane River portion of the trail.

UsersThe Centennial Trail welcomes over 2.4 million users each year. Roughly two-thirds are pedestrians and one-third are cyclists. The Washington State Parks Department does regular parking lot counts, and an EcoCounter was installed at Kendall Yards in 2015. The EcoCounter uses infrared technology to tally people on the trail.

LengthDescribed by FCT Executive Director Loreen McFaul as the backbone of eastern Washington’s recreational trail system, the 37.5-mile trail begins at the Washington-Idaho state border and ends in Nine Mile Falls. Together with the North Idaho Centennial Trail, the entire trail spans over 60 miles and connects the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene communities.

The experience The trail’s path generally follows the contours of the Spokane River, allowing

access for many types of outdoor non-motorized activities such as walking, running, cycling and skat-ing. It is commonly used for commuting to work, recreational activities and wildlife observation.

In the ValleyThe Valley portion of the trail extends from the state line, past the Spokane Valley mall, and through a treed canopy alongside the river. McFaul said the portion is mostly flat, has wonderful trailheads with easy access, and is mainly Class 1 Trail, which means it is away from streets.

Don’t forget Stay to the right side of the trail. The trail is like a street; traffic flows in two directions.

Take care Treat the trail as if it’s your own backyard by picking up trash, cleaning up after dogs and calling 911 if any dangerous issues are observed, McFaul said. “The Centennial Trail is an amazing resource for our region that needs to be enjoyed, celebrated and cared for.”

Page 100: 2016 Spokane Valley Guide

It’s been a year of adjust-ment for professional football fans in Spokane. With a transition from the AFL to the Indoor Football League (IFL) and the subsequent development of a new team identity, Spokane’s football fran-chise has gone through its share of changes.

But one familiar piece is back – Adam Shack-leford. Affectionately known by fans as “Coach Shack,” Shackleford led the former Spokane Shock to three division titles and two conference championships during his time with the team from 2007-2009.

When Shackleford transitioned to coach the Tri-Cities Fever in 2010, he kept his home base in Spokane Valley. He succeeded in his time with the Fever, receiving his 100th win as a professional coach during the 2015 season. But he reveled in the opportunity to come back to Spokane to take the helm of the Empire IFL team, a roster that Shackleford described as being full of “high-character men who will be great examples to youth as they travel around the country repre-senting Spokane and the Inland Empire.”

With his 100th win under his belt, a newly

named team in place and his family under one roof again, Shackleford is back in the seat as engineer of Spokane Empire football.

Q: Who has im-pacted you most as a coach? A: First and foremost, my father. He is a well-respected Christian man who was a great example for me growing up. He has run his own law practice for 36 years, and I seek career advice from him quite often because he is my father, my agent and my financial adviser.

Also, (I was influenced by) my two high school of-fensive line coaches, the late Jim Higgins and Pat Orloff. Those two men are probably the reason I am a football coach today.

Q: How would you describe your coach-ing philosophy?A: There are so many labels for coaches these days – player’s coach, dictator, innovative or old-school. I try and blend these to be an honest, hard-working coach who demands players do the right things on and off the field. I have high expecta-tions of my players and, at times, I am hard on them. But the great ones want to be challenged and want to be pushed.

Q: In what ways does your family support your career?A: It can’t be easy being a football coach’s wife, as working 70- to 80-hour weeks and traveling every other weekend is the norm for me during the season. The responsibility is mostly on her to take care things around the house and make sure our two boys are at school, soccer, baseball and flag football on time. The suc-cess my teams have had has a lot to do with the fact that I know things are handled at home, and I have the love and support of my wife.

Q: Speaking of suc-cess, what moments are you most proud of as a coach?A: With a lot of hard work by a lot of people around me, we have had success everywhere we have been. Championships and rings are great, but they sit on the shelf most of the day. What I value most is the relationships with my players – watching them become husbands, fathers, successful businessmen, teachers and coaches.

Q: What has been the reception by Spokane fans since returning to the area?A: It feels great to be back. I had six ter-rific years in the Tri-Cities

working for the Carr Fam-ily, but this is home. The fans remind me every day of that with their passion for the Empire.

Q: What do you ap-preciate most about being back living in the Valley?A: Since our move in 2007 from Louisville, Ky., it has always felt like home. We love our church, our kids’ schools, our neighborhood. There is a reason why people move here and never leave.

SECOND STINT

Love for the game“As a player – both as a young man and into my years playing col-lege football – I loved the goal-orientated team aspect of the game. I liked the chal-lenge of competing to the best of my ability.

Now as a coach, I have learned to appreci-ate the ability to help shape and mold the character of young men and show them how life lessons can be learned from this tough game.”

– Adam Shackleford, head coach, Spokane Empire Football

Rick Giampietri is some-one who put loyalty above head football coaching ambitions to stick by a mentor and friend.

And when it came his time after more than two decades as an assistant football coach to the late Jerry Connors, Giampietri was justly rewarded for his selflessness. The Central Valley Bears won the 1997 State 4A champion-ship just five years into his football head coaching career.

At the end of the 2015 football season, Giampietri announced his “retirement” on the heels of his fifth state football playoff appearance in 23 years as head coach.

From 1970 through 1992, Giampietri assisted Connors in football at both Lewis and Clark and CV before taking over the next season. Why would some-one who aspired to be a head coach since college, who won more than 60 percent of the time and qualified for five state playoffs after becoming one, wait so long to have his own program?

Giampietri explained how Connors had lost both

his wife and daughter to illness.

“It was just that Jerry and the family had been under a lot of stress, and I had quite a bit of allegiance to him,” he said. “He treated me good, let me coach the defense, and I did what I wanted to do.”

When Connors stepped down at CV, the time was logical for “Coach G” to assume the mantle and take on the overall re-sponsibility for the football program.

“I had been an assistant long enough, and this was the job I wanted,” said Giampietri, who was living a stone’s throw away from the school with his wife, Priscilla, three daughters and a son who would star for his dad both in football and wrestling.

Before becoming the football coach, Giampietri had been a head wrestling coach for seven years. All told over his 46 years in education, he assisted or was head coach in five different sports.

Giampietri said he was prepared, and the record bears him out. Over 23 years, CV compiled a 146-87 record and had but five losing seasons. He seemingly approached

it with a calm, generally soft-spoken demeanor. You seldom heard a raised voice on the sidelines or in the huddle during a game.

“All coaches are demand-ing,” said 1996 graduate Giorgio Usai, rushing leader on CV’s ’95 regular-season unbeaten and state qualifying team. “His style was fairly cool and col-lected. When we did see the burst of emotion from him, it meant a lot.”

Giampietri amplified, “You know, if the team needed a boost during practice, I tried to hit that at the right time. If you do it all the time, they don’t listen to you. So you just want to hit it so hopefully you got their attention.”

Path to a championshipGiampietri became involved in football beginning in the fourth grade at St. Anthony’s Parochial School, playing against eighth graders. He graduated from North Central, went on to play at Grays Harbor Community College and at Eastern Washington University which had won a national title a couple years earlier.

It was there that Giampietri knew he wanted to be a coach and began prepar-ing for it.

“I studied the coaches – the ones I liked and didn’t like,” he recalled. “The things I liked were the discipline and (those who) knew when players worked hard for them. Not the guy that was trying to be your buddy, but the guy actually teaching you something and you felt accountable to. Those were the guys I liked and respected the most. Those were the ones I tried to emulate.”

He and Priscilla met in high school – she attended Holy Names Academy – and married while still in college. The three girls came along thereafter, followed by Rick Jr.

They became the proto-typical football family. The young daughters would wear their cheerleading uniforms to the games when they were little. They still attend as adults, and Giampietri even coached a grandson.

He said that Priscilla, who affectionately goes by “Pete,” has been a good coach’s wife. “My gosh, anytime, anywhere she cooked for the players. She never second-guessed. She’s been a great supporter.”

Rick Giampietri was a presence on the sidelines as Central Valley High School’s head football coach for 23

years. He won 146 games, made five playoff appearances and brought home a state championship during his tenure.

The ’95 team was a favorite since it included his son and teammates who hung around the Giampietri household. At the time, it was the team he figured had the best chance of doing something at state but was upset by eventual finalist Kamiakin in the first round.

“We hung around their home and were always watching film,” said R.J. Del Mese, who quarterbacked the team. “That was kind of the deal growing up. They also had the first big-screen televi-sion in the neighborhood, so we were there watch-ing football (games).”

Del Mese said Coach G always seemed to know what to do and when you should be doing it.

“The quarterbacks have sort of a different relation-ship with a coach,” he

said. “He wasn’t afraid to get after me.”

But he would call him aside after a meeting and explain his reasoning.

Sparked by Wil Beck, a 295-pound wrecking crew plus record-setting junior running back Tyree Clowe, the Bears put aside a regular season loss to romp to the 1997 championship.

“That was kind of the icing on the cake,” Giampietri said. “It was a fun time.”

Stepping back but not awayMost rewarding for him as a coach have been the athletes who succeeded by overachieving.

“That’s kind of why you get into it,” he said, quickly adding with a laugh, “but you have to have the studs to win.”

Giampietri said he had a feeling that this might be

his last year as a head coach.

“It wasn’t a snap decision, and I didn’t let anyone know, even my wife,” he said.

When he did let her know, she wanted to make sure he was ready.

”I’ll miss the Friday nights and the crowd yelling,” he said, “and the quietness of the locker room before the game and hearing people putting pads on and nothing else. I still enjoy coaching. I enjoy practice, that’s the good part of it. Just the other stuff I have to do, I guess it was getting old.”

This loyal soldier, who waited so long for his chance, knows loyalty works two ways. Many of his assistants have been with him for the length of his tenure and a couple, including Barry Poffenroth, assisted even before he arrived.

“He’s probably the truest friend I’ve had through coaching, bar none,” Pof-fenroth said.

Giampietri, who retired from teaching a few years earlier, will likely ease out of a coaching a little at a time.

Among the things his players will miss, Usai said, are his locker room “Hot Damn” exhortations following a win or lighting an emotional fire.

Plenty of cell phone “Hot Damn” texts, Usai said, were exchanged in capital letters among former players, a fitting salute to a man who impacted their lives.

The east slope of Browne Mountain was a popular destination during the Great Depression, providing a winter playground of skiing, ice skating and tobogganing for local kids and adults. Open on weekends and holidays, Ski-Mor often trucked in snow to make up for what Mother Nature lacked to produce. The resort was open for only a decade, but helped create many great memories for outdoor enthusiasts in the Spokane region.

More fun in the snowWhile Ski-Mor may have been the first winter recreation area in the Valley, another destination popped up in the 1970s – Holiday Hills. Located on the west side of Liberty Lake, the resort offered lighted slopes, a chairlift and lodge amenities such as a ski shop, swimming pool and restaurants. Local residents enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating close to home, but Holiday Hills struggled to remain open and closed by the end of the decade.
