MICHIGAN STATE PROBABLE LINEUP

• Michigan State opens the 2016 season at Florida Gulf Coast University at the Eagles’ Kickoff Classic. The Spartans will take on Middle Tennessee, Illinois-Chicago, Kent State, and Memphis in addition to host FGCU. Four of this weekend’s opponents won 22 or more games in 2015, with Kent State posting a 41-13 record last spring.

• Live stats will be available via SportsBroadcast for all fi ve games, with links to each at www.MSUSpartans.com. There will be no video or audio streams this weekend, but live updates will be provided on the team’s twitter feed (@MSU_Softball) every half-inning.

• MSU returns seven positional starters, as well as its entire pitching staff, from the 2015 team. Eight of 10 incumbent fi eld players posted their career- best batting average in 2015. Four players hit .320 or better overall, and fi ve hit .300 or better in B1G play. In addition, six newcomers add talent and depth to the Spartan roster.

• MSU’s top two returning hitters are sophomores - center fi elder Lea Foerster and shortstop McKenzie Long. Foerster was a Second-Team All-Big Ten selection, and led the team in six offensive categories, including a .339 BA. Long opened her collegiate career by hitting .321 in 55 games, starting 51 in the middle infi eld.

• Both Kassidy Kukawa and Sarah Gutknecht enter their junior seasons with 14 career home runs, which is 10th all-time in a career at MSU. Current volunteer assistant Lindsey Hansen owns the MSU career record with 42.

• In the circle, MSU will start the season with three veterans and one newcomer getting heavy consideration, Kristina Zalewski returns after 172.2 innings last year while posting a 3.65 ERA. Bridgette Rainey grew by leaps and bounds throughout 2015, and Dani Goranson has full clearance to start the season for the fi rst time since 2012. Freshman Celeste Wood factors heavily into MSU’s pitching plans early as well.

THE WEEK AHEAD• Michigan State opens the 2016 season at Florida Gulf Coast University at the Eagles’ Kickoff Classic. The Spartans will take on Middle Tennessee, Illinois-Chicago, Kent State, and Memphis in addition to host FGCU.

The Spartans have the most history with host FGCU, with fi ve games played all-time; MSU is 1-4, with the last meeting at the FGCU Tournament in March 2014. The Spartans are 1-0 vs. Middle Tennessee, with the last meeting coming in 2011 at the FAU Tournament. MSU is 1-1 against Kent State all-time, most recently falling to the Flashes last March at the UCF Tournament.

TEAM NOTES • A schedule featuring 28 non-conference opponents from 15 Division I leagues around the country in addition to eight Big Ten foes awaits the 2016 edition of the Michigan State softball team. The Spartans will spar with six non-conference teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago: super-regional participant Georgia out of the SEC, and regional teams South Carolina (SEC) Notre Dame (ACC), Florida Atlantic (C-USA), Chattanooga (SoCon), and Arizona State (Pac-12). Add in College World Series participant Michigan and perennial NCAA qualifi er Northwestern from MSU’s conference slate, and Joseph expects her team to be challenged from the fi rst pitch of the season on Feb. 12.

• Jacquie Joseph, who will be inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame in December 2016, starts her 23rd season at the helm of the MSU softball program. Spartan All-America Jessica (Beech) Bograkos shares the dugout with her mentor for the ninth season. Bograkos serves as the team’s pitching coach. New to the staff this season is South Carolina product Kaela Jackson as an assistant coach, Spartan All-America Lindsey Hansen returns as a volunteer assistant, and fi fth-year student-athlete McKinzie Freimuth will be the student coach.

• MSU’s 2015 squad produced offensive performances that were among the top 10 in program history in 13 different categories. MSU’s team batting average of .277 a year ago was eighth in the Spartan record book, while its on-base percentage (.375) was second and slugging percentage (.412) was fi fth. MSU established new school records in double-plays turned (27) and hit by pitch (64). The Spartans were also third in both walks (170), and sac flies (14), fourth in home runs (38), fi fth in doubles (69), sixth in RBI (231), eighth in runs (251) and ninth in hits (399).

• The Spartans fi nished the tournament portion of their schedule a year ago with a 15-12 overall record, the fi fth-most wins of any B1G team prior to conference play.

• Eighteen of MSU’s 55 games in the 2015 season were neutral-site contests, and MSU held a 13-5 record in those games.

• MSU had eight NFCA Scholar-Athlete All-Americans in 2015, tied for the most in the Big Ten. The Spartans also had fi ve of the 33 2014-15 Big Ten Softball Distinguished Scholars, tied for the most of any team in the Conference.

• Eight of 12 eligible players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2015, (freshmen not eligible). MSU’s eight players was the most for the team since 1998, when the squad boasted nine Academic All-Big Ten selections. MSU has had fi ve or more in each of the last three years.

She also led the Spartans in runs scored (41), hits (59), doubles (12), triples (5), extra base hits (20), and multiple-hit games (17). She led the Big Ten in triples, the sixth-highest total in the MSU annals.

• Long was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after the Indiana series, and opened her collegiate career by hitting .321 in 55 games, starting 51 in the middle infi eld. She ranked second on the team with 12 doubles, adding four home runs, 28 runs scored, and 45 hits, and contributing 27 RBI.

• Junior Sarah Gutknecht moves across the infi eld to play fi rst base after two seasons at third. In 2015, she hit .285, ranking fourth on the team in slugging percentage (.489) and third on the team in home runs (8). She added 27 RBI, smacked 39 hits and four doubles, while tallying nine multiple-hit games and eight multiple-RBI efforts, and tying for the team’s longest hitting streak of the season (11 games).

• Kassidy Kujawa is the starter in left fi eld, looking for a healthy junior season that will keep her in the lineup more consistently. In 2015, the Tampa native hit .281 in 48 games, and started 24 of the last 25 games in left fi eld. She hit .281, scoring 22 runs on 34 hits, knocking in 34 RBI and swatting 11 home runs - a total good for fi fth all-time at MSU in a single season.

• Both Kukawa and Gutknecht enter their junior seasons with 14 career home runs, which is 10th all-time in a career at MSU. Current volunteer assistant Lindsey Hansen owns the Spartan career record with 42.

• Seniors Destinee Luna and Shanin Thomas are projected starters at second and third, respectively. As a junior, Luna hit a career-best .262 in 47 games, scoring 14 runs, a career-high 32 hits, and contributing a pair of doubles. Thomas started 28 of 48 games in which she played, and hit a career-best .226, with career highs in

at-bats (93), runs (17), hits (231)and RBI (18).

• Senior Jacquie Reiser can back up any of the infi eld positions, and started 81 of 96 games over the last two seasons. As a junior, she improved on her sophomore year totals in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, and RBI, hit her fi rst career home run, and was a team-best 12-for-13 on stolen bases. She ranked fourth in the Big Ten in sacrifi ce bunts (7) and tenth in hit by pitch (10)

• Behind the plate, redshirt sophomore Lindsey Besson will return from a 2015 season lost to injury. As a freshman, she hit .270 and started 38 games, boasting a .981 fi elding percentage in 162 chances, with nine assists against just three errors. Jordan Davis will back her up and make a play for DP duty, as she earned a regular spot in the lineup down the stretch last season and hit .333.

• Three freshmen will be vying for playing time in right fi eld - Ebonee Echols, Kaitlyn Eveland, and Celeste Wood. Echols has impressive speed and can step in admirably almost anywhere on the fi eld, while Eveland also catches and can play in the infi eld. Wood will push to stay on the fi eld when she’s not in the circle - she factors considerably into the plans for the MSU pitching staff.

• MSU has a six-player pitching staff, the most depth available to the Spartans in recent memory. Junior Valerie Kaff, who has logged more than 200 innings over her fi rst two seasons, will miss at least the start of the non-Conference season, but redshirt sophomore Kristina Zalewski shouldered a considerable load in 2015 and is looking for even bigger things in the coming year. She tossed 172.2 innings and posted a 3.65 ERA, good for tenth in the Big Ten in both categories. She ranked sixth in the B1G in appearances (43), second in games fi nished (18), 15th in games started (20), and third in games entered in relief (23). Zalewski also ranked 11th in wins (14), and third in saves (4), while posting the eighth-most strikeouts (141). Her four saves was the third-most at MSU in a single season, while her 43 appearances ranks fi fth and 141 strikeouts is ninth.

• Bridgette Rainey had a baptism by fi re in 2015, but grew by leaps and bounds throughout the season. She started nine of MSU’s fi nal 13 games, and logged a total of 83.2 innings. She made 12 Big Ten starts, the most of any pitcher on the staff.

• Dani Goranson has fought through injuries the last two seasons, but has full clearance to start the season for the fi rst time since her freshman year of 2012. Goranson saw limited action in 2015, going 1-1 in 13 appearances, tossing 27.2 innings and owning a 5.82 ERA.

• Freshman Hannah Shuler rounds out the pitching staff and will look to get some time in the circle. With more pitching depth than in recent seasons, it will give her time to adjust to the college game and not have to be rushed into action.

• Freshmen classmates Lexi White and Kelly Zackrison will look to crack the lineup in the outfi eld. The road is tougher for White, who will begin the season on the DL with a lower-body injury. Both players showed signifi cant growth in the fall campaign.

BIG TEN SOFTBALL STATISTICS - 2015 (FINAL, OVERALL)


Jacquie Joseph has instilled core values in the Michigan State softball program, developing student-athletes that are successful on the fi eld, in the classroom and in the community. Under Joseph’s leadership, these values allow her players to not only become suc-cessful during their college career, but in their future endeavors as well. As the records indicate, Joseph’s impact as a mentor and coach has been felt for years in the program she has built into one of the best in the Big Ten Conference.

Since taking over the Spartan program in 1994, the head coach has become the winningest coach in program history, guiding MSU to a 607-625-1 record and four NCAA Regional appearances in 22 seasons. In addition, Joseph eclipsed the 700-win plateau in 2013, and she entered the 2016 campaign with a 743-755-1 career mark (22 seasons at MSU, and fi ve at Bowling Green).

Joseph will be a December 2016 inductee in to the into the Na-tional Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame. Joseph will be recognized as part of the Pioneer category of the NFCA Hall of Fame, which recognizes a member that has contributed above and beyond to the sport of fastpitch softball through service, leadership, coaching and/or participation.

When Joseph was named the fi fth head coach in school history, she immediately raised the expectations for the program. MSU has steadily improved under her tutelage, posting three 40-win cam-paigns and nine 30-win seasons, including four in the past 10 years.

Joseph’s players have performed at a high level her entire career, leading to individual accolades as well as team success. She has coached six All-Americans and her players have earned All-Big Ten honors 45 times and All-Great Lakes Region honors 30 times. In the classroom, an impressive seven student-athletes have been named Academic All-America in her tenure, the most of any active coach in the Michigan State Athletics Department. Her players are a regular on the Academic All-Big Ten Team, earning conference honors more than 100 times.

Played the most positions on the fi eld of any player on the roster, logging games in right fi eld, third base, and fi rst base, in addition to being the designated player ... Played the entire Big Ten season, and the most games overall, at third, with just fi ve errors in 49 games ...
