POINTS OF INTEREST

DISTANCE IN MILES BETWEEN DURANGO AND...

Mesa Verde National ParkMesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from AD 600 to 1300. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archaeo-logical sites, including 600 cliff dwell-ings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. The park entrance is along Hwy. 160 between the towns of Mancos and Cortez and about 35 miles west of Durango.nps.gov/meve

Black Canyon of theGunnison National ParkDescribed on the National Park website as “deep, steep and narrow,” this extraordinary canyon has the Gunnison River at the bottom. There are several trails for all abilities on both the North and South Rims. These will give you spectacular views of the canyon. There are plenty of ranger-guided activities.nps.gov/blca

Historic Downtown DurangoWhere Old West meets Southwest, Downtown Durango is a Nationally Registered Historic District and home to historic boutique hotels, award win-ning restaurants, laid-back brewpubs, and fabulous art galleries, museums, and shops.durango.org

Southern Colorado MuseumsThere are many Southern Colorado Museums for history lovers to enjoy. Even if you aren’t a huge history lover there are artifacts that will be sure to interest you. Almost every town in Southern Colorado has its own museum. Why so many Southern Colorado Museums you might ask? It is because most families have lived here several generations and are very proud of their heritage. There are also a lot of Native American artifacts that have been found in the San Luis Valley.southern-colorado-guide.com

Rocky Mountain Wildlife ParkThe Park is a privately owned facility that has been in operation since 1986. The purpose here is to educate people about the animals in this area. Visitors are given the chance to see these beautiful animals up close in what would be their natural habitats.5 miles south of Pagosa on U.S. Hwy. 84970-264-5546rmwildlifepark.org

Museum of the Mountain WestWhere history comes alive! View thousands of artifacts from the Mountain West circa 1880-1930, see authentic storefronts and be sure to take the guided tour so you don’t miss any of the interesting stories and anecdotes. Two miles east of Montrose.68169 Miami Road970-240-3400museumofthemountainwest.org

Ouray Hot Springs PoolRelax in their famous sulfur-free hot springs. The public pool contains close to a million gallons of crystal clear natural hot springs water. There are several soaking sections at a variety of temperatures ranging from 88-106 degrees. There’s a lap swimming section, a diving area and large slide (both closed in winter), and a shallow section for kids. There is also a massage facility and a fitness center.1220 Main Street970-325-7073ourayhotsprings.com

Denver & Rio Grande RRTravel back in time with the Denver & Rio Grande Scenic Railroad! This his-toric route takes you over tracks that date back to the gold and silver rush, when the West was wild. Visit them for one of the most scenic excursions along the beautiful Rio Grande River to Wagon Wheel Gap. They also offer special extended excursions to the Wasson Wye. Another option is their Rail & Raft adventure.97 Ponderosa Drive, South Fork719-873-2003denverandriogranderailroad.com
