Winston is the overwhelming favorite — 1-to-15 odds to be the No. 1 pick Thursday in the NFL draft. That’s a scenario I find hilarious.Winston is Johnny Manziel,

one year later. He’s a guy who has gotten this far because of a strong arm, some small-town charm, a win-at-all-costs mind-set at Florida State and see-no-evil mentality in Tallahassee.

The guy threw more inter-ceptions last season (18) than Marcus Mariota, Bryce Petty and Brett Hundley combined, and yet scouting reports praise his ability to read coverages. O-kay.Winston knows when to

drop “sir” into conversations to give the air of being respectful. But even that act has its limits.

Did you watch ESPN’s “2015 Draft Academy” show? During one scene that seemed more “Saturday Night Live” than real life, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and Wolverines quarterback coach Jedd Fisch work to prepare Winston for interviews with NFL teams.

As Winston strokes his goatee, Harbaugh tells him the basic goal of coaches and execs is to find out: “Is he an a—hole or not?”Winston responds with a

rambling answer about why he loves football: “You can be soft and play basketball. You can be soft and play baseball.”

When asked if he has been disciplined, Winston says once in high school: “Yessir, for one game for laughing at my coach (after) he cried. He felt I disrespected him.”

Nice, Jameis.And college?“I got disciplined for a game against Clemson for standing up on a table and saying something … wrong,” Winston says, grinning.Yes, after you’ve been

accused of raping a fellow student — the state attorney declined to bring charges against him — you might not want to climb onto a table at the student union and shout something vul-gar about a sexual act.Any encounters with the

police, Harbaugh asks.Winston mentions his arrest after a 2012 BB-gun fight that damaged an apart-ment complex. And that’s it.

Here’s where it got weird.

The Kamehameha senior quarterback recently signed a letter of commitment to play at the Division III school in Redlands, Calif., where athletic scholarships aren’t offered.However, Division III

schools are allowed to offer other types of scholarships such as academic, grants or financial-aid packages.Kanehailua had a

half-dozen other scholar-ships on the table, but found a comfort zone at Redlands (6-3 record in 2014), which last won a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2013.

Bulldogs coach Mike Maynard spotted Kanehailua at the Life Champions Senior Bowl in December at Paiea Stadium.

Kanehailua, who has a 3.5 grade-point average, will major psychology and philosophy, and hopes to get into environmental law.

It’s also possible that he could follow in the law

enforcement footsteps of his dad, Marshall Kanehailua, an assistant chief of police.

“That’s not out of the picture because it’s about serving people and helping others,” Kanehailua said.His mom Esther

because there weren’t any at Camden Yards.The game was held behind

closed doors, and the Orioles and Chicago White Sox played because it was con-sidered to be the best way to

fill out the schedule for both teams.

The timing worked for baseball, not so much for Baltimore. It was an unusu-al move by Major League Baseball, which usually errs on the side of caution in the wake of tragedy.Baseball games were

The match will be televised live statewide on OC Sports chan-nels 16 and 1016 (HD), and will be broadcast on radio via ESPN 1420 AM.The Rainbow Warriors (24-5)

are coming off a 25-19, 26-24, 27-25 home sweep of Long Beach State in last Saturday’s quarterfi-nals. Pepperdine (23-5) is coming off a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 home sweep of UC Santa Barbara last Saturday.

UC Irvine (26-4) will face Southern California (19-8) in the other semifinal. Thursday’s win-ners will play for the MPSF cham-pionship and the accompanying automatic NCAA Tournament bid on Saturday.The semifinal appearance is

UH’s first since 2010; the Rainbow Warriors have not advanced to the MPSF title match since 2002.

this season.The Wildcats produced one two-out

rally after another Wednesday, holding

off Honokaa 8-7 in a well-played BIIF

third-place game to secure their third

consecutive trip to the HHSAA Division

II tournament.Amor, who delivered a key two-out

hit in the sixth that brought in two runs,

and Teizha Kaluna, who was 3 for 3 and

pitched the final three innings to pick up

the save, each used the word “slow” to

describe a midseason lull for the Wildcats

(6-7), who entered having lost 4 of 6.“We just kind of thought we could beat

anybody,” Amor said. “We kind of had too

much excitement.“Our coaches had to knock some sense

This is it for David Letterman. Af-

ter more than three decades on

late-night TV and more than 6,000

late-night broadcasts on his resumé,

the legendary talk show host is sign-

ing off for good. Don’t miss the final

episode of “The Late Show with Da-

vid Letterman” when it airs Wednes-

day, May 20, on CBS.

It all started in February 1982. Sort

of. At least, that’s when Letterman’s

late-night hosting career started. His

actual journey to after-hours comedy

started years earlier, after watching

the late Paul Dixon’s daily TV show.

“Without exaggeration, I was just

out of college (in 1969), and I really

didn’t know what I wanted to do.

And then, all of a sudden, I saw him

doing it (on TV),” Letterman said in

a 1997 interview with “The Cincinna-

ti Enquirer.” “And I thought: ‘That’s

really what I want to do!’”

And do it he did. Starting out hum-

bly as an anchor and weatherman

on an Indianapolis TV station,

Letterman quickly became known

for his quirky and unpredictable on-

air antics — reporting on weather

for fictitious towns, congratulating a

tropical storm for being upgraded to

a hurricane, and reporting that a

state border had been wiped out, to

name a few. He moved to Los Ange-

les in 1975, hoping to land a gig as a

comedy writer, and found himself

performing standup at The Comedy

Store, the comedy club in West Hol-

lywood that boasts an impressive

list of alumni, including one Johnny

Carson.Flash forward a few years — and

quite a few writing and starring

roles — and Letterman’s star had

risen exponentially. He’d caught

the eyes of scouts for Carson’s “The

Tonight Show Starring Johnny Car-

son” and very quickly developed a

lasting relationship with the King of

Late Night, becoming a regular

guest as well as guest host on the

iconic show. He soon landed his

own hosting gig, a morning comedy

show on NBC, and while the nature

of his hosting duties have since

changed, the rest — as they say —

is history.

Since the state legalized same-sex marriage, hundreds of gay couples have tied the knot on Hawaii Island, with a majority of them coming from out of state.

As of March 2, 444 same-sex couples wed on the Big

Island after the state’s marriage equality law went into effect on Dec. 2, 2013. Those cou-ples accounted for 13.7 percent of all marriage licenses issued on Hawaii Island, according to data provided by the state Department of Health.

Meanwhile, more than 60 percent of the same-sex weddings on the Big Island

involved cou-ples in which one or both members were nonresidents.

In a July 2013 research paper, Sumner La Croix, an economics professor with the University of Hawaii, predicted that additional visitor

spending across the state as a result of marriage equality could total $217 million during the 2014-16 period.

Via email on Monday, La Croix said he had not crunched the latest numbers, but a curso-ry look at the data showed the possibility of an even larger impact.

“A quick check of Hawaii DOH figures on numbers of same-sex marriages in Hawaii

shows 3,457 same-sex mar-riages from December 2013 thru February 2015,” he wrote. “The U.S. Census in 2010 shows 3,262 gay/lesbian cou-ples in Hawaii. My earlier reports predicted 1,957 would marry by December 2016.

Organizers behind an effort to build a network of mixed-use trails through some of Hilo’s most scenic spots say that they could break ground on the first phase in September.

The Hilo Bayfront Trails project currently has money set aside to begin work on the first phase and expects to raise matching funds through donations, said Peter Kubota, president of the nonprofit organization.

“We’re getting our web-site ready to accept contri-butions, and then we’ll be ready to rock and roll with the groundbreaking,” he said.

Since the state legalized same-sex marriage, hundreds of gay couples have tied the knot on Hawaii Island, with a majority of them coming from out of state.

As of March 2, 444 same-sex couples wed on the Big

Island after the state’s marriage equality law went into effect on Dec. 2, 2013. Those cou-ples accounted for 13.7 percent of all marriage licenses issued on Hawaii Island, according to data provided by the state Department of Health.

Meanwhile, more than 60 percent of the same-sex weddings on the Big Island

involved cou-ples in which one or both members were nonresidents.

In a July 2013 research paper, Sumner La Croix, an economics professor with the University of Hawaii, predicted that additional visitor

spending across the state as a result of marriage equality could total $217 million during the 2014-16 period.

Via email on Monday, La Croix said he had not crunched the latest numbers, but a curso-ry look at the data showed the possibility of an even larger impact.

“A quick check of Hawaii DOH figures on numbers of same-sex marriages in Hawaii

shows 3,457 same-sex mar-riages from December 2013 thru February 2015,” he wrote. “The U.S. Census in 2010 shows 3,262 gay/lesbian cou-ples in Hawaii. My earlier reports predicted 1,957 would marry by December 2016.

“If my prediction about in-state couples is correct, this shows about 1,500 out-of-state couples officially

This is it for David Letterman. Af-ter more than three decades on

late-night TV and more than 6,000 late-night broadcasts on his resumé, the legendary talk show host is sign-ing off for good. Don’t miss the final episode of “The Late Show with Da-vid Letterman” when it airs Wednes-day, May 20, on CBS.

It all started in February 1982. Sort of. At least, that’s when Letterman’s late-night hosting career started. His actual journey to after-hours comedy started years earlier, after watching the late Paul Dixon’s daily TV show.

“Without exaggeration, I was just out of college (in 1969), and I really

didn’t know what I wanted to do. And then, all of a sudden, I saw him doing it (on TV),” Letterman said in a 1997 interview with “The Cincinna-ti Enquirer.” “And I thought: ‘That’s really what I want to do!’”

And do it he did. Starting out hum-bly as an anchor and weatherman on an Indianapolis TV station, Letterman quickly became known for his quirky and unpredictable on-air antics — reporting on weather for fictitious towns, congratulating a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane, and reporting that a state border had been wiped out, to name a few. He moved to Los Ange-les in 1975, hoping to land a gig as a comedy writer, and found himself performing standup at The Comedy

Store, the comedy club in West Hol-lywood that boasts an impressive list of alumni, including one Johnny Carson.

Flash forward a few years — and quite a few writing and starring roles — and Letterman’s star had risen exponentially. He’d caught the eyes of scouts for Carson’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Car-son” and very quickly developed a lasting relationship with the King of Late Night, becoming a regular guest as well as guest host on the iconic show. He soon landed his own hosting gig, a morning comedy show on NBC, and while the nature of his hosting duties have since changed, the rest — as they say — is history.

didn’t know what I wanted to do. And then, all of a sudden, I saw him doing it (on TV),” Letterman said in a 1997 interview with “The Cincinna-ti Enquirer.” “And I thought: ‘That’s really what I want to do!’”

And do it he did. Starting out hum-bly as an anchor and weatherman on an Indianapolis TV station, Letterman quickly became known for his quirky and unpredictable on-air antics — reporting on weather for fictitious towns, congratulating a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane, and reporting that a state border had been wiped out, to name a few. He moved to Los Ange-les in 1975, hoping to land a gig as a comedy writer, and found himself performing standup at The Comedy

Store, the comedy club in West Hol-lywood that boasts an impressive list of alumni, including one Johnny Carson.

Flash forward a few years — and quite a few writing and starring roles — and Letterman’s star had risen exponentially. He’d caught the eyes of scouts for Carson’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Car-son” and very quickly developed a lasting relationship with the King of Late Night, becoming a regular guest as well as guest host on the iconic show. He soon landed his own hosting gig, a morning comedy show on NBC, and while the nature of his hosting duties have since changed, the rest — as they say — is history.

Insert and Shipping/Receiving

SPECIFICATIONS AND DEADLINES

Sunday inserts should be sent to the West Hawaii Today Printing Facility.

1. Insert pallets should be clearly labeled with the product name, total quantity, amount per skid or box, the total amount of skids and the insertion date.

2. If inserts are re-packaged, they should be re-packaged in the original form sent by the printer (same number of pallets, same amount on pallet, same number in a bundle, etc.)

3. Inserts should be packaged by insert date. If a product is running multiple dates, then it should be separated as such.

4. Inserts need to be at least .005” thick. Thinner sheets will often stick together causing “multiples.”

5. Different inserts should NEVER be packaged on the same pallet.Verifying the count may be extremely difficult without removing all the bundles or boxes.

6. Insert bundles should not be tied (strapped) if possible. Strapping causes the product to curl and can make it difficult to feed into the insert machine.

7. No more than two turns (compensating stacks) per bundle would be optimum. Additional turns make it more difficult for the inserter to feed the machine.

8. Inserts should be stacked flat and not standing on edge.

Additional Notes:Offset stock can have a different thickness than glossy stock for the same paper weight. Color Express inserts are usually printed on 60# stock. 60# offset stock measures .0045” thick while 60# glossy (or enamel) stock is only .003” of an inch – a huge difference (50%).

LATE FEESLate delivery of any pre-printed inserts will need prior approval. Contact your sales representative for delivery extension dates. All pre-printed inserts delivered after deadline will be assessed at $1,500 late fee per publication, if inserts are delivered after the agreed extension date, a $200 a day surcharge will be imposed per publication. Tax will also be added to the surcharge.

Policies

RATE AND CREDIT All advertising shall be prepaid unless credit accommodations have been established beforehand with The Hawaii Tribune-Herald credit department. Amounts not paid in 30 days are assessed a finance charge of 1.5% per month (18% Annual Percentage Rate). Accounts with a balance of thirty or more days past due are subject to credit discontinuance withoutnotice. All charges are due and payable on the twentieth day of the month following publication. Any Hawaii Tribune-Herald ad measuring more than 19” deep will be set to full page depth (20”) and charged accordingly. All display ads are billed to the nearest quarter inch.Advertisers signing dollar volume contracts will be billed at the applicable rate on the current rate card. Advertisers will be rebilled at the appropriate higher rate if contract is not fulfilled. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald may, at its sole discretion, offset any credits due an advertiser hereunder against amounts otherwise owed to it by an advertiser. Contracts become effective upon acceptance by management. Contracts are not retroactive and are not prorated. When an advertiser uses an advertising agency, both advertiser and agency shall be jointly liable for complying with all terms of the rate agreement, including payment for all advertising. Copy should be checked for errors by the advertiser on the first day of publication. Credits for errors on advertisements will be allowed for the first insertion only. Credit will be issued for the portion of the advertisement that was incorrect. No credits will be given for positioning or for ads that did not publish in the paper. The value of any credit cannot exceed the cost of the ad. No errors in advertisements will be credited if ad copy was supplied after specified deadlines. All rates are net and subject to Hawaii’s general excise tax of 4.166 percent.

ADVERTISING RATES Acceptance of advertising is subject to the approval of the Publisher. Brokered space is not accepted. All previous rate schedules are hereby canceled. All rates are subject to change upon 30 days written notice. Advertisers forwarding orders that have incorrect rates or conditions are advised that the advertising will be inserted and charged at the regular schedule of rates in force, and in accordance with the regulations set forth in the current rate card. Advertising resembling news text must be surrounded by a border and carrying the line “Paid Advertisement” in 8pt. type at the top of the ad. The font in the ad must be Sans-Serif”.

Guaranteed PlacementAdvertising position is not guaranteed. However, guaranteed position will be granted on a first-come basis for ads 30” or larger for an additional 25% charge. Every effort will be made to comply with position requests, but acceptance of an order does not imply a position guarantee.

Political AdvertisingAdvance payment is required on all political advertising. Copy must carry the line “Paid Political Advertisement” at the top and must list the name of the individual, party or organization responsible for placement of the ad. A wide range of political rate programs are available. Please ask your Account Executive for details.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Standard Format: PDF/X-1a (PDF/X-1a:2001) files are preferred. Files must be provided at actual image (ad) size. All extraneous information should be removed and transparencies flattened. All digitally supplied files must be accompanied by a hard copy proof by deadline.Images within your PDF should be saved at 200 ppi for correct reproduction in newsprint. Color image tone range: a 2% cyan dot is the minimum highlight dot to hold the lightest detail, with a 1% magenta and 1% yellow dot to maintain gray balance. Neutral shadow dot area should be 60%, 50%, 50%, 80% for CMYK, respectively. Total dot area should not exceed 240% in any part of the image.Rules that are 4 points or thinner, as well as small type,should be reproduced as one color only. Small type is defined as:• sans-serif type that is 12 points or smaller• serif type that is 14 points or smaller• fine-serif type, such as Bodoni, that is 18 points or smaller.Type smaller than 12 points should not be reversed on a four-color background and type smaller than 10 points should not even be reversed on a single-color background. INDUSTRY STANDARDS / LIABILITIES All camera-ready files must be accompanied by a proof of the file which represents a complete ad in its proper size. Proofs reduced to fit a small page must indicate the print has been reduced for this purpose alone. In addition, delivery in other file formats for Mac (Quark XPress, InDesign) must always be accompanied by all image files and fonts. If multiple layouts are sent on the same media the correct file name must appear on each proof. All colors must be created with a CMYK model and all files should be prepared for process color separation. No RGB, Pantone or PMS colors. As is the industry standard, it is the sole responsibility of the originator to properly prepare and provide all files according to recommendation outlined by Oahu Publications.
