‘A lot of work, thought and planning are put into the festival. Every event is fun and so interesting and educational!’

HF 2016 visitor survey

Overview of the 2016 History Festival

This year’s History Festival was the biggest ever, with an estimated 127,500 visits to 629 events presented by 366 different event organisers during May 2016.

The 2016 program was designed by the team from Influx and the cover image, starring objects from the state History Collection alongside our glamourous models, was popular with audiences who made good use of the 30,000 printed copies.

The program was launched by Minister for the Arts, The Hon Jack Snelling MP on 1 April 2016 to a crowd of over 300 people at the Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide.

The Festival itself was kicked off with a regional launch in Loxton, hosted in conjunction with the District Council of Loxton Waikerie.

Throughout the month, visitors enjoyed tours, talks, exhibitions, special events, bus trips, open days, performances, dinners, workshops and more at a variety of venues. Program highlights included Bar Yarns: History in the Pub, a diverse family-friendly program, International Museum Day events, Indigenous history events as part of National Reconciliation Week and the popular built heritage program. The annual Magical History Tour, sponsored by Festival sponsor SA Power Networks, booked out in record time, as did a number of other walking and bus tours.

Our History Festival website and app continued to be popular ways to keep up to date with the latest program updates and thanks to the efforts of our intern from Germany, our social media following grew significantly during the month.

The History Festival is grateful for the support of major sponsors Adelaide City Council and SA Power Networks and Media Partners FIVEaa and Messenger Press.

In 2016, the number of events in the regional program increased by 25%. This was in part thanks to the efforts of community members assisting to coordinate participants from their area.

Many of the organisations involved are run or partly run by volunteers (56% of the History Festival event organising groups that answered our 2016 survey were run solely by volunteers). The efforts of the thousands of individuals responsible for presenting the events in the program ensure that South Australians and visitors alike can explore the State’s history and heritage during the Festival and beyond.
