Site Visits: Thursday, October 6, 2016 – 9:00 am

JW Reason Elementary in Hilliard City Schools J.W. Reason Elementary School is home to approximately 490 students in grades K-5, with an ELL population of about 100 students, many of whom are refugees from the Middle East. The school is slightly above 50% free/reduced lunch. Recently they have begun to use a co-teaching instructional model for their ELL students in grades K-4. Midnimo Cross-Cultural Middle School This charter school serves students in grades 6-8 with a population that is predominantly Somali and African American. The English Language Learner population is 100 percent Somali speakers. The vision of the school is "To prepare students academically, socially and morally for higher education and a brighter future.” Westerville Central High School Westerville Central High School is a 9-12 school with over 1,800 students, with about 90 students receiving services in the ESL program. The achievement level of our students has dramatically improved with the recent implementation of S.I.O.P. A licensed ESL teacher and bilingual paraprofessionals collaborate with core academic teachers forming a team that delivers lessons to the students in the 9th and 10th grades. Additional support services are offered for upperclassmen. US Together Refugee Resettlement Organization US Together is a resettlement agency that provides accommodations, services and trainings for adult refugees who wish to resettle in the central Ohio area. We have a variety of different programs to service our clients to establish a strong foundation for their path to citizenship. Visitors will see ESL and citizenship classes. Adult ESOL Classes through Columbus City Schools Columbus City Schools offers several adult education programs, including ESOL classes for any adults in the Central Ohio area. Classes are free, and are leveled by English proficiency ability. Visitors will be able to observe one of four classes at various levels. Presenter: Alba Ortiz, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus, Department of Special Education College of Education, The University of Texas at Austin, Office of

Bilingual Education at the University of Texas Dr. Alba Ortiz is Professor of Special Education and Director of the Office of Bilingual Education at University of Texas at Austin. She is an expert on the education of bilingual students with special needs. Throughout her career, Dr. Ortiz has received numerous presidential, federal commission and gubernatorial appointments. She is a past president of the Council for Exceptional Children, the premier national professional organization for special education.

Session Description

This session presents a framework for addressing long-entrenched issues faced by English Learners, including academic underachievement and disproportionate representation in remedial and special education programs. The framework calls for linkages across programs and services for English Learners, shared responsibility for student success, expertise specific to English Learners, effective curriculum and instruction, and collaboration among educators and EL parents and communities.

Session: A-6 Featured Session: State of Profession – Teacher Education Presenter: Jennifer Fennema-Bloom, The University of Findlay This session will provide an overview of current TESOL programming options offered in the State of Ohio, as well as providing a national and state level look at educational trends in preservice and in-service teacher education for those working with English language learners. Time will be provided for participatory discussion on topics and areas of mutual concern.

Session B-1 Maintaining Language and Literacy Assessment Records for English Learners Presenter: Alba Ortiz, University of Texas at Austin Maintaining longitudinal language and literacy assessment records is essential for instructional planning for English Learners. Guidelines for assessing and documenting skill development will be presented and considerations in identifying students who may benefit from supplemental intervention or referral to special education will be provided. Session B-3 Stuck in the Middle: Leading Students Through the Speaking Plateau Presenter: Julie Prugh, University of Dayton This academic demonstration will focus on the practicalities of getting intermediate-advanced ESL students to monitor their errors and increase fluency in order to encourage them to become more autonomous speakers. Most activities involve students making video or audio recordings. Room: C122 Intended audience: Grades 7-12; Higher Education Session B-4 Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Update Presenter: Colleen Grady, Ohio Department of Education The passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act provides a rare chance for states to change the way the way they approach improving opportunities and outcomes for all students. This session will provide an update on Ohio's response to ESSA as well as afford members of the audience the chance to weigh in on key decision points. Session B-7 What Happens When Teacher Candidates Work One-on-One on a Digital Storytelling Project with ELs? Presenters: Martha Castaneda, Miami University; Christopher Yaluma, Miami University/ The Ohio

State University; Linda Bucher, Talawanda School District This study examined Teacher Candidates’ (TCs) attitudes and awareness of multicultural teaching and learning before and after working one-on-one on a digital storytelling (DST) project with an EL. Presenters will outline the project, present survey results and discuss reflection themes. This practice-based presentation will provide participants with materials and examples so they can integrate creative writing into their classes. Tragedy into Triumph Presenter: Jin Stearns, Author Jin Stearns is a motivational speaker and author of the book, Lost Seoul. This inspirational true story narrates his journey of being lost at age six at the Seoul Train Station, sold to an unscrupulous orphanage, and later adopted by an American family at age ten. Young Jin faces all the challenges of an ELL adjusting to his new language and culture, and tells his moving story with humor and insight from the perspective of a newcomer. This powerful book is being read in many Ohio school districts, and is currently being made into a movie in London, England (set for release in 2017). Don't miss it!

Among these are proficiency in (1) processing sentence components as thought groups, (2) recognizing that these thought groups often coalesce around formulaic sequences, (3) employing fluency practices that promote automaticity, (4) interpreting highly nominalized texts, and (5) exploiting reading-writing connections.
