2016 Member Survey Report Every other year, NSPRA surveys its members to better understand their backgrounds and responsibilities, and to help advocate for our members with this understanding. This survey is designed to help NSPRA’s leaders make decisions based on data our members provide.
We asked NSPRA members to fill out a brief survey online with K12 Insight in January 2016. An invitation to take the survey was sent to 1,573 active NSPRA members through e-mail and in NSPRA This Week and eNetwork. Of that number, 372 members completed the survey. Not every member answered every question. Please note that results contained in this report represent a very small sample of our membership – at maximum 24% of our total membership of 1,573, in January 2016. Please keep that in mind as you read the responses.
Who Is an NSPRA Member?
Most respondents have worked in the PR/communication/marketing industry and been an NSPRA member for more than a decade. They have also held their current position for 11 or more years. 70 percent of respondents (280 of 366 respondents) have had another PR/communication/marketing job before this one, a figure that mirrors our last survey’s results. However, although most had never worked outside of education in 2014, this year’s survey shows that 72 members worked for 3-5 years in communication before switching to the education sphere compared to 69 that had never ventured outside of education. 68 respondents out of 366 (19%) are Accredited in Public Relations (APR).

Demographically, 76% of respondents (276 of 363) are female, and nearly all (93%, 337 of 364 respondents) are Caucasian. NSPRA is 2% more homogeneous racially and in terms of gender in this survey than the last one. One-third of respondents (125 of 365) are between the ages of 50 and 59 as opposed to one-third being between the ages of 40-49 last time. This age range still accounts for 28% of respondents, though. 355 respondents of 365 (97%) have earned at least their bachelor’s degree, one-third (122) has earned their master’s, and 4% (13) have their doctorate. Most respondents (22%, 79 of 367) are from the North Central region. Nearly 60% of our respondents studied either communications/communication studies/PR or journalism as undergraduates (217 out of 365 respondents). More respondents studied education for their graduate pursuits than journalism, but one-quarter (47 of 175) earned their graduate degree in communications/communication studies/PR as well.
Job Description
Respondents were four percent more likely to have a colleague that works in school communication, but more than one-third (134 out of 362) are their organization’s only school communicator. Slightly more than half (199 compared to 166) supervise other staff members. Those who supervise others usually supervise either three to five people (59 out of198 respondents). Respondents are most likely, by far, to be a PR/Communications/Marketing director than to hold any other job title. Seventy percent (253 of 361) report directly to the superintendent or CEO for their primarily suburban school districts. Most respondents work in smaller districts than the last time this survey was conducted with 5,000 to 10,000 students rather than 10,000 to 25,000.
Budgets and Salaries
It is most common for respondents to have an annual communication budget of $50,000 to $149,999 in their district, of which $70,000 to $79,999 commonly represents the respondents’ salary range. This is an increase from last survey’s $60,000 to $69,999 range. Forty percent of respondents with their APR (22 out of 55) made $100,000 annually or more. In contrast to our last survey finding most members did not receive a salary increase, this survey shows most members received a 2% raise. Most respondents’ districts have a total operating budget of more than $150 million.
We have included graphs to display the full results of this membership survey.
