We’re excited to welcome you to the 2016 NIC Fall Conference. Since 1991, the conference has grown and evolved, but it remains the premier event for the seniors housing and care industry to network, make new connections, and build partnerships.
As always, the conference program is designed to provide you with insight into the trends impacting the future of our industry—from policy changes that are driving health care payment and delivery reform to longer-term changes prompted by a new and more demanding consumer. Program highlights include:
• A keynote from former HHS Secretary and Utah Governor Mike Leavitt on the transformation of the U.S. health care payment and delivery model, a development that will produce challenges and opportunities for both private-pay and government-reimbursed providers;
• Predictions from veteran political observers David Brooks and E.J. Dionne on the general election and what the policy impacts will be in areas such as entitlement programs, tax policy, and healthcare;
• NIC Talks, a series of 12-minute talks designed to spark conversation about the future of aging. American sports icon, humanitarian, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Billie Jean King will join industry leaders and outside disruptors as they share their visions of the future of aging; and
• A Candid Conversation with Operator CEOs on issues affecting their business practices, including workforce development and competitive positioning in the marketplace.
I encourage you to attend as many sessions as you can and take full advantage of all the resources and opportunities the conference has to offer.
Thanks for joining us. Have a great conference!

Healthcare’s Big Changes—and Why Seniors Housing Should Also Pay Attention Meeting Level 2 (M2)—Marquis Ballroom
The sweeping transformation of the U.S. health care payment and delivery model is shining a spotlight on frail seniors and the dollars spent on their care. Increasingly payors are demanding better outcomes at lower costs. It is a challenge that private-pay and government-reimbursed providers alike have the potential to meet, as they better understand how to deliver the community setting with social supports and services that are critical to improving quality of life and care for older Americans. But meeting the challenge will require a willingness to adapt and innovate with a more flexible business model.
In this timely and provocative session, former HHS Secretary and three-term Utah Governor Mike Leavitt will discuss the health care delivery and payment model: how it is changing, what the system will look like in three to five years, what payment models are likely to dominate, and what all this means for providers of seniors housing and care. As founder and chairman of Leavitt Partners and HHS Secretary under President George W. Bush, Governor Leavitt is well-respected for his ability to help clients navigate to new and better models of care. His insights into anticipated challenges and opportunities will be vital for all who serve America’s seniors—from post-acute and long-term care, to traditional private-pay seniors housing providers and their investors.

Population Shifts: What Changing Demographics Mean for Markets and ProductsMeeting Level 4 (M4)—Independence Salon H
The demographics of the seniors housing and care customer are changing, and the pace of that change is going to accelerate. Markets experiencing oversupply today might see supply deficits a decade from now. Join Beth Mace, NIC’s chief economist, and Kelly Cook Andress, founder and president of Sage Senior Living, as they discuss the demographic shifts projected to occur over the next 5 to 15 years.
Learn how the customer is expected to change—from who they are and what they value to where they’ll want to live—and what you’ll need to do from a marketing and operational perspective to serve them.

Stocks, bonds, and alternative assets, such as commercial real estate, are among their top choices. Increasingly, seniors housing is being considered a viable investment option.
