INTERESTED IN PLANNING A COMMEMORATION OF THE KING’S ROAD RESERVE RELOCATION? This year marks the 100th year that some 125 of our community members were ordered to leave the King’s Road Reserve. Over the past few months, we have the discussed the idea of planning an event to honor and to recognize those families and individuals who lived through those difficult times.

We wish to organize a Planning Committee to commemorate this event. If you are interested in volun-teering for this Committee, please contact Dan Christmas at [email protected] or at (902) 564-6466 (ext. 2280). PAD and SHIRLEY’S CORNER • FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2016 • Page 9

Relapse is Very Common! Are there going to be setbacks? Yes. Human beings make mistakes, but that doesn’t mean a person can’t get back on course.

Even if people relapse they need to be reinstated to the program to get back to sanity and allow therapists to make necessary adjustments to their meds, or seek help in making modifications to their lifestyle. Perhaps an alter-native treatment is called for. Again, everyone is different, and so treatment programs must meet the needs of the individual. The more you understand the more you real-ize why it is so difficult to treat.

Are Drug Addiction and Drug Abuse the Same? No. Understand that addiction and drug abuse are not the same, because not all people who take drugs become addicted. The most commonly used drug is alcohol, and alcohol addiction, like Drug Abuse, progresses in stages, as a person descends into drug or alcohol dependence,

hits bottom, then ascends back up to good health. It’s a process.

Not everybody that uses drugs is on the path to becom-ing an addict. Some people can abuse drugs, but not become addicted, while others try drugs or alcohol once and are immediately hooked.

Alcoholics talk about the “click,” that experience of sat-isfaction when taking the first drink. Drug users experi-ence a “high” or a kind of euphoria. In either case, they want to feel good, and the drugs make them feel good. But it gets out of hand.

Shirley’s Corner: It Ain’t My Fault! (Part 1 of 2)

Hello and welcome to my world of goofiness. Did I mention never a dull moment like crazy things happening when you least expect it. I had a dream last night I was in a car with my son Victor and a younger person in the back seat but don’t know who it was; anyway we were driving along and we got pulled over by a police officer.

I was in the passenger seat but the police officer came to my side of the window asked for my licence, permit & insurance. Hmm… looking around for my purse couldn’t find it going in a panic. I plead with the cop I do have them but can’t find them. I told him they were in my purse and they were in my car. I don’t know what hap-pened after that cause the sound of tractors woke me up.

The dream reminded me of the time I wore my brand new sneakers and decided to go to the Mayflower Mall to find matching sandals. Here I was just a driving along with Bon Jovi music going full blast my head just a bop-ping with the tunes happy as can be.

Then a cop car come up fast behind me soon he was joined by six police cars just barreling up the road sirens blaring, lights flashing. Wonder what’s up best let them go by it was then I realized my speed. Can’t exactly say what was going through my mind at that moment but at the same time I was praying they would just go on.

I looked to my left and smiled at the officer as he waved so I waved back. But he did not smile back, oops think I’m in trouble so I finally came to a stop I thought for sure they were going to pass me. Hah! Not a chance. I knew the officer and tried to hide my face behind my hands… as I went sliding down the seat.....
