Please note that this document is not the official yearbook of the University of Stellenbosch, but merely a document created by the Postgraduate & International Office to assist international semester students to choose appropriate courses. The official yearbook of the University of Stellenbosch is available at: http://www.sun.ac.za/english/faculty/Pages/Calendar.aspx. Please note that once an application for a mainstream course has been entered, a student needs to allow four to six weeks to receive feedback on whether he/she has been approved for the specific subject. In most cases, students who apply for mainstream courses also need to provide course descriptions of the highest level completed of related subjects at the home university, as reflected on the academic transcript provided in the full application. Students should make sure to apply for a course offered in the actual semester of attendance at Stellenbosch University. To assist you in choosing courses this document indicates the semester in which a course is offered. Take note that if you apply for the first semester (January/February) you may register for a full year course for half the credits for only the first semester provided the academic department has consented to such special arrangement. 1.3 READING AND UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERGRADUATE COURSE OFFERINGS IN THE OFFICIAL ONLINE YEARBOOK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH When considering undergraduate courses from the official yearbook of the University of Stellenbosch the yearbook can be very confusing. Please see the explanation below to assist you in reading and understanding the official yearbook of the University of Stellenbosch. LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION Stellenbosch University Policy – Mainstream courses: The following indicates the medium of instruction (A) – Only Afrikaans (E) – Only English (T) – T option: 50/50 (A/E) – Parallel: two class streams * Take note that all academic material will be made available in English INFO TO EXPLAIN COURSE DETAILS: Each of the following abbreviations is used throughout the University to denote the stated combination of (i) type of instruction and (ii) length of time: L lecture of 50 minutes; P practical period of 50 minutes [for instance: „2P‟ and „10P‟ stand for totals of two practical periods and ten practical periods, respectively]; 3P a practical of maximally 170 minutes [this maximum is made up of 3 x 50 minutes, plus the two intervals of 10 minutes each]; S seminar of 50 minutes; T tutorial of 50 minutes; 2T tutorial of maximally 110 minutes [this maximum is made up of 2 x 50 minutes, plus the interval of 10 minutes]. Please familiarise yourself with the coding of mainstream courses in order to make a course selection. The undergraduate course codes will tell you when the course is offered. The code consists of three digits. The first indicates the year-level of the course, the second indicates which semester the course is offered in (1, 2 and 3 indicates a first semester course; 4, 5 and 6 indicates a second semester course. 7 or 8 indicates a full year course). The third digit is irrelevant for your purposes. For example: English 348 is a third year course (3); offered in the second semester (4). To better explain the abovementioned, look at the extract from the yearbook from the Faculty of Science as an

example on the next page:

Page 3: 2016 Mainstream Courses offered in English and the T-option

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

This indicates the name of the module

The code consists of three digits. The first

indicates the year-level of the course, the

second indicates which semester the course

is offered in (1, 2 and 3 indicates a course

taught in the first semester; 4, 5 and 6

indicates a second semester course. 7 or 8

indicates a course that runs over a whole

year). The third digit is irrelevant for your

purposes. For example: English 348 is a

third year course (3); offered in the second

semester (4). The codes for postgraduate

courses are more complicated, as the digits

do not correspond to the semester it is

offered in.

This indicates the amount of

credits for the course

2 South African credits = 1

ECTS

4 South African credits = 1

USA credit

Indicates type of instruction and length of time

(indicated per week):

L lecture of 50 minutes;

P practical period of 50 minutes [for instance: ‘2P’ and

‘10P stand for totals of two practical periods and ten

practical periods, respectively]; 3P a practical of

maximally 170 minutes [this maximum is made up of 3

x 50 minutes, plus the two intervals of 10 minutes each];

S seminar of 50 minutes; T tutorial of 50 minutes; 2T

tutorial of maximally 110 minutes [this maximum is

made up of 2 x 50 minutes, plus the interval of 10

minutes].

The following indicates the medium of

instruction

(A) – Only Afrikaans

(E) – Only English

(T) – T option: 50/50

(A/E) – parallel: two class streams

* Take note that all academic material will

be made available in English

Fundamentals Principles of Chemistry II is thus a first

year subject offered in the second semester, worth 16

credits and is taught both in Afrikaans and English.

Instruction is given in 3 lectures and a practical of

approximately 170 minutes per week.

Fundamentals Principles of Chemistry II is thus a first

year subject offered in the second semester, worth 16

credits and is taught both in Afrikaans and English.

Instruction is given in 3 lectures and a practical of

approximately 170 minutes per week.

2. POSTGRADUATE COURSE OFFERINGS AT STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY All postgraduate courses at Stellenbosch University are offered in English. For more information on postgraduate course offerings you can access the official yearbook of the University of Stellenbosch at: http://www.sun.ac.za/english/faculty/Pages/Calendar.aspx. Take note that the course codes do not correspond to the semester in which it is taught. If you do not find enough information in the yearbook your next viable option will be to access the website of the department to access their information on postgraduate course offerings. You do this by going to the official university website, www.sun.ac.za and searching for the name of the department in the ‘’A to Z index’’, http://www.sun.ac.za/english/a-z . You can also search for the name of the faculty in the index and follow the link from the faculty website to the relevant academic department. The contents of these postgraduate course offerings differ between different departments. Some departments only indicate the course names, whiles others indicate the semester in which a course is offered and some departments have a detailed course description of the course available on the website. If you cannot find sufficient postgraduate course information on the departmental website you last option will be to contact our office so that we can further assist you in finding such information.

3. DEFINING THE FIRST AND SECOND SEMESTER AT STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY The first semester is the first half of the academic year at Stellenbosch University which usually commences in
