• SS Dalton Britt, P Carson Herndon and 1B/OF Andrew Yacyk have been named team captains for 2016.• Britt, a senior, has started every game (180) since joining the Flames in 2012. He enters 2016 with a .273 career batting average with 87 RBI and 83 runs scored. • Last year, Britt hit .294 with 30 RBI and set career-high with 33 runs scored and seven home runs. The SS also had a 16-game hitting streak, the longest by any Liberty player in 2015.• 1B/OF Yacyk comes off a 2015 campaign, where he hit .286 with 25 RBI and 23 runs scored. Playing in all 56 games, with 55 starts, the junior posted an on base percentage of .384.• P Herndon returns from injury for his senior year in 2016. The RHP posted a 5-1 record with a 2.82 ERA in eight starts in 2014, before being injured and sitting out 2015.• P Victor Cole posted a 5-3 record with a 2.67 ERA over 84 1/3 innings in his fi rst season with the Flames in 2015. The JUCO transfer fi nished third in the Big South with a .208 opponent batting average and fi fth in ERA. • Last year, Cole was selected as the Big South Pitcher of the Week twice (March 2, April 12) and carried a no-hitter into the ninth in a complete game, 6-1 victory over Bryant on Feb. 28.• OF Will Shepherd was named to the 2016 Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America team. The junior, who played for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League (CPL), hit .325 with 26 RBI in 45 games and led the CPL with 49 runs scored. He was named to the 2015 All-Coastal Plain League fi rst team and selected to play in the 2015 CPL All-Star Game.• In 2015, Shepherd hit .235 with 18 RBI and 37 runs scored in 45 games. He belted a career-high fi ve home runs and led the Flames with 16 stolen bases.• Corner INF Sammy Taormina returned from injury to post a .285 batting average and 16 RBI in 43 games, last season. Taormina started 34 games, the majority which came at 3B.• This past summer, Taormina was selected to the All-Coastal Plain League (CPL) fi rst team as a 3B and as a starter for the 2015 CPL All-Star Game.• OF Aaron Stroosma provided strong outfi eld defense in his fi rst season at Liberty in 2015. Showing excellent range in center fi eld, the JUCO transfer hit .225 and stole 10 bases in 36 games.• P Geoff ery Murphy attended Boston College from 2011-15, graduating with a degree in communica-tions. The transfer posted a 2.76 career ERA in 33 appearances and saw time in the outfi eld for he Eagles.• Freshman OF D.J. Artis was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 2015 Major League Draft. The OF was named to the 2015 All-USA North Carolina baseball team and was the All-Area Player of the Year at South Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C.• Freshman P Jack DeGroat was the 2015 Virginia 3A State Player of the Year at Loudoun Valley High School in Purcellville, Va.• JUCO transfer Evan Mitchell was named the 2015 NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year and a fi rst team All-American. The pitcher was a teammate of Liberty infi elder Andrew Kowalo at Potomac State.• Kowalo hit .405 with eight home runs, scoring 52 runs and collecting 42 RBI as Potomac’s starting shortstop in 2015. The junior INF also played with Flames outfi elder Will Shepherd on the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plains League, this past summer.• Eric Grabowski was named the All-Region XIX Division II Player of the Year and to the region’s fi rst team in 2015 at Lackawanna. Grabowski is expected to see action in the infi eld and on the mound, this season.

Shepherd Named to PG Summer Collegiate All-America Team• Liberty junior outfi elder Will Shepherd was selected to the 2016 Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America team.• Shepherd, who played for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League (CPL), a wooden bat league, was named to the second team as the designated hitter.• In 45 games, the outfi elder hit .325 with 26 RBI. He led the CPL with 49 runs scored and was fourth in the summer league with a .554 slugging percentage. The junior belted eight home runs, a triple and 12 doubles.• Shepherd was named to 2015 All-Coastal Plain League fi rst team as an outfi elder.• In addition, Shepherd was selected to play in the 2015 CPL All-Star Game. 2016 Liberty Captains• The Flames will have three team captains for 2016.• Senior shortstop Dalton Britt, senior pitcher Carson Herndon and junior fi rst baseman/outfi elder Andrew Yacyk will serve as captains for the season.• Britt has started every game of his Liberty career (180) and was a semi-fi nalist for the 2014 Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year. He has been a Big South All-Conference team (2014) and a two-time all-tournament member. He has hit .273 for his career.• Herndon returns to the Liberty pitching corps after sitting out the past 1 1/2 seasons due to injury. The right-hander posted a 5-1 with a 2.82 ERA in eight starts in 2014, before being sidelined. The 2014 Big South Coach of the Year, Jim Toman has overseen the rise of the Liberty Flames baseball program to national prominence during his tenure. Toman enters his ninth year at Liberty, having posted the highest NCAA Divi-sion I winning percentage (.625) and compiled the best Big South Conference winning percentage (.668) during his fi rst eight years in Lynchburg of any head baseball coach in program history. He will begin 2016 three wins shy of 300 career victories, becoming the second coach in Liberty history to reach 300 wins. In 2014, he became the fi rst coach in school history to lead the Flames to back-to-back NCAA berths. After claiming an automatic bid by winning the 2013 Big South Championship, Toman’s 2014 team received the program’s fi rst at-large se-lection to an NCAA Regional. During his tenure, Liberty has posted the school’s three top single-season win totals in program history. The 2010 Flames set the school record with 43 wins, while Liberty posted 41-win seasons in 2012 and 2014. In addition, three of the four teams with 40-plus victory seasons all-time have been under Toman’s leader-ship. The Flames have won 35 or more games in six of his eight seasons at Liberty and have averaged 37 wins per season, the most of any head coach in program his-tory. The Flames have notched a 297-178-1 overall record during his eight seasons at Liberty and have posted a 135-67 Big South mark over the span. During his coaching career, Toman has been a part of 16 NCAA Regional teams, seven NCAA Super Regional teams and three College World Series teams. This past season, Toman’s squad posted a 33-23 overall mark and ranked as high as 24th nationally by Baseball America (Feb. 24). For the second consecutive year, a Liberty pitcher was named the Big South Pitcher of the Year as Jared Lyons was selected the conference’s top pitcher. Mean-while, Alex Close became the fi rst Liberty player to be named twice to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America fi rst team. Toman’s 2014 Liberty squad garnered the program’s fi rst ever at-large selection to a NCAA Regional. In addition, the Flames, who fi nished the year at 41-18, were ranked among one of the four major baseball polls during the regular season for the fi rst time in program history, reaching as high as No. 21 in the Baseball Amer-ica weekly poll on March 21. Liberty captured the Big South regular season title with 23 Big South victories, also the most in school history and at year’s end, became the fi rst team in league history to sweep the major conference awards. Toman was an unanimous selec-tion as the conference’s Coach of the Year, while Ryan Seiz was named the Player of the Year. Trey Lambert was selected the Pitcher of the Year and also the Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Parker Bean was voted Freshman of the Year. Nationally, Seiz became the fi rst player in Liberty history to be named to three postseason All-American teams. Meanwhile, Bean was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. In addition, Close and Lambert became the fi rst two play-ers to be named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team. Liberty led the Big South with a 2.62 ERA, the lowest in program history, and fi nished 2014 ranked 14th nationally in the category. The Flames also topped the

conference with nine shutouts. The relief corps recorded 16 saves, tying for the second most in program history with Toman’s 2010 team. Toman lead his team to the fi rst NCAA Regional fi nal appearance in program history in 2013. The Flames captured the Big South Championship and then de-feated Clemson twice to make their fi rst appearance in a regional fi nal in the pro-gram history. In 2012, the Flames posted their second 40-plus win season in a three-year span under Toman and set school records for team ERA, shutouts and fi elding percent-age. Liberty pitchers recorded a 3.04 ERA, ranking 15th nationally, and set a Big South and school record with 11 shutouts. In addition, Toman saw fi rst baseman Close named to two Freshman All-America teams. The year before, Toman saw seven players from his Flames squad selected dur-ing the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, the most players chosen in a single draft in the history of the program. Liberty posted a school record for wins in a single season with a 43-18 record in 2010 and in 2009, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters. The Flames’ strikeout total led the Big South Con-ference. Their 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season’s end. In addition, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a 2009 Freshman All-Ameri-can by the Collegiate Baseball News. After 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner’s coaching staff at South Carolina, Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June 2007. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tan-ner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the team’s catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college base-ball, the 27-year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA Regional trips, including eight straight appearances between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive visits to the College World Series (2002-04). N.C. State made seven NCAA appearances during his time there. During his 11 seasons at South Carolina, he helped the Gamecocks to a combined 500-220 record (.694). A catcher, Toman was a four-year letterwinner at N.C. State from 1981-84, and served as team captain of the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons. Toman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education from N.C. State in 1985 and graduated as the top student in the vocational in-dustrial education curriculum. He received a Master of Science degree in sport management from N.C. State in 1995. Toman began his collegiate coaching career in 1989 as an assistant at Florida International for one year. A native of Monroeville, Pa., Toman lives in Forest, Va. He has three children - Caroline (18), Charlie Mac (15), and Tucker (12). He is a member of the Thomas Road Baptist Church.
