Medical Journal Releases New Findings! Two Chocolate Cupcakes a Day Adds Years to Your Life

We've all heard by now that chocolate is good for you. Thank goodness! But the AMA

has now come out with an article that says that eating two chocolate cupcakes a day, frosted

or not, will add years to your life. Isn't that just the best news?

NAW, just kidding. April Fools!

However dark chocolate really is good for you. All those antioxidants you know.

Well, since I'm curious about everything I wanted to find out how April Fool's Day came about.

It seems April Fool's Day is celebrated globally, but it's exact origins remain a mystery. Some

precursors of April Fool's Day include Rimas Festival of Hilaria, the Holi Festival in India and the

Medival Feast of Fools. Very early on the Flemish poet, Eduard de Dene wrote of a nobleman

who sent his servants on foolish errands on April 1.

It's celebrated in the UK, in Ireland and in Poland serious activities are avoided. The

convictions run so strong the anti Turkish alliance with Leopold I was signed on April 1, 1683,

but was backdated to March 31. Nordic countries such as Denmark, Finland, and even

Belgium, print one false story on the first page of their newspapers. In French speaking areas

of Switzerland and Canada it's called Poissons d'avril or April Fish, and in Italy it's pesce d'aprile

for April Fish said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. The tradition

is to attach a paper fish to victims backs without being noticed. So in keeping with the

tradition maybe you want to try a little prank for April 1. Nothing mean, of course.

THE RECIPE CORNER Coconut Macaroons

From Good Food, Great Medicine: A Mediterranean

Diet and Lifestyle Guide. Third edition, 2014, by Miles

Hassell, MD, and Mea Hassell

These macaroons are simple to make, store well, and even freeze beautifully.

Makes about 2 dozen

Ingredients

2 egg whites (scant 1/3 cup) 1/2 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon pure almond extract 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups dried unsweetened shredded coconut

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Set rack in middle oven. Mist baking sheet with a non-stick spray.

1. Whisk egg whites, sugar, almond extract, vanilla, and salt in a mixing bowl until smooth and foamy and sugar is dissolved.

2. Add coconut and mix thoroughly with a large fork or a sturdy rubber spatula. The mixture should be thick and sticky.

3. Form tablespoon-sized mounds of mixture (see note) and place about an inch apart on the oiled baking sheet. The cookies won’t spread unless the mixture is too wet. (Stir from time to time, as the egg white mixture tends to settle.)

4. Bake at 350 degrees in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes, or until macaroons are golden top and bottom. Transfer from baking sheet to cooling rack with a thin-edged metal spatula. Store in covered container for a week (I’ve kept them successfully for 2 weeks) or store for a few months in the freezer, well-sealed.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS!

TO ERR IS HUMAN, Errare Humanum Est - (to repair is divine) with apologies to whoever coined this phrase – Alexander Pope? – Anneo Seneca?

…So, the northern peripheral boundary of Westlake Village came into question AFTER excavation and preparation for foundations and site development at the end of Bentley Drive.

…So, County Surveyor/Civil Engineer Peter Allen was called to re-measure.

…So, this resulted in re-excavation, gravel-fill, and re-setting form boards and re-bar. Undaunted, we’re off and running again! Concrete sets well in the cool rain! When this newsletter goes to press, the new home for that site will already be in the Village and Grumpa Stein will be juggling schedules between this home and the one next door, which will arrive within a couple weeks of the first one. Mark Cornett’s lakeshore work on Kingsley Drive is making way for re-construction of the deck/porch and roof at that site, then re-landscaping. New homeowners are eagerly awaiting completion of work there so they can begin their new life in Westlake Village. The showers have done their share to slow up landscaping progress. About the time the water feature next to the Clubhouse is ready for the next phase of completion, along comes the deluge which sets us back to square one – pumping out the excavation into which liner, boulders, pumping and piping systems will give us a spectacular waterfall and emerald pool this summer. (Jeanne can no longer boast of her home being the ugliest on Kingsley Drive. The ELM crew came through with TLC. Yayyyy! – even in the rain!) Landscape contractors and nurserymen alike caution this could be a prime year for bug-infestations of healthy trees because of the mild winter and plentiful rain. Insects are affecting nursery stock and Mike, Kelly, Zach and crews are taking necessary steps to protect what we have in the way of beautiful landscape

materials, as well as scanning nursery stock very

carefully to prevent spread of the insects’ habitat. Meanwhile, crocus, daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and other flowers from bulbs that slept through the winter

have shown their glorious color throughout the Village and surrounding areas. Grants Pass is aptly named “The Tree City” and we’re not disappointed. Blooming trees are grabbing our attention everywhere we look. We’re looking forward to the dogwood blooms soon and the wild azaleas and lilacs that give the air a fragrance unmatched by anything we grow domestically.

?? WHO KNEW ??

A Shot of Whiskey In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot of whiskey”. Ship State Rooms

Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of

comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not

numbered. Instead they were named after states. To

this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.

“Pizza Pie Review”

The 2nd Annual Pizza Party at the Club house on Friday, March 11 was “magnifico”! It was hosted by John Pace, Robert Meredith and Richard and Michele Pedraita. The tantalizing smells of pizza wafted through the room. There were 15 different kinds of pizza including Italian, Hawaiian, Mexican, Veggie, Pesto, Pepperoni, and French bread smothered in melted cheese and truffle oil. Individual pizzas with cheeses and sauces and spices were abundant! Wonderful, hot, gooey, pizza bursting with tantalizing flavors made with love. And the Village People brought great salads and yummy desserts to end a wonderful evening of good food and lots of fun. Gary and Sheila Beauchamp won the 50/50 for the second time. Now thatsa lucky!

Another Man's Treasure

It's that Time of the year again! Get ready to clean out your closets and wherever else you store all that "stuff" that you don't want any more. Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4, is Westlake Village's huge neighborhood garage sale. It's a once a year event and this year it will be in conjunction with Rogue Lea Estates so there will be scads of people driving around looking for the good stuff. The Hospitality and Activities Committee will again be doing their fabulous bake sale in the gazebo. It was such a hit because all you wonderful bakers contributed such delish items. Robert Meredith and John Pace have volunteered to be the collection center again this year. More info in May's newsletter. Be thinking about what you want to make.

THE BOOK NOOK…

“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body” - Addison

THE BOYS IN THE BOAT by David James Brown/non-fiction

(available in hardback, paperback and e-book)

In reading this well researched book about rowing, you are invited to get acquainted with the nine , working-class boys from the University of Washington as they prepared for and then participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. These Depression-era athletes beat the odds to compete showing unusual dedication and perseverance. They were part of what has been known as the Greatest Generation in America. It is an inspiring and amazing story which does not require background or interest in competitive rowing. I am told it is the oldest of chronicled sports in the world! (I read it for my book club & had no prior knowledge of the sport.) The author spent three years researching the book, using lots of diary entries and interviews of family

members plus news stories from the time period. Several pages of bibliography are at end of book. There are several levels of interest in this book. The main one for me was watching the life of one athlete, Joe Rantz, unfold and mature by trusting himself and his teammates as they perfected their art of rowing as a team. The photos are very interesting and compliment the story. I will close with a borrowed quote from one review: “It is a book that informs as it inspires.” I think it is well worth the time spent reading it. Happy reading, Glenda Northcutt

COMINGS..

BIG WELCOME TO OUR NEW NEIGHBORS!!!

April showers are a little early this year. If it’s good luck

to move when it’s raining, the Platts, new residents on

Bentley Drive, should be especially blessed. Welcome

to Westlake Village, John and Margo!!

AND GOINGS...

Peggy Thomas’ home at Kingsley and Bentley Drive disappeared under our noses Tuesday morning, March 8…Poof! Wonder if the tooth fairy has become larger! No coins left behind, but there will surely be another beautiful new home on that site! Peggy reports she and “Sister” are loving Wyoming and being with her family there. Expect some more dismantling and moving on Kingsley Drive, when Nadine Newhouse’s home goes out in April. “Nan” and son Jim departed Monday and will be enjoying another adventure in Ventura. Having Nan closer to more family has been a long-time hope for all. There are five new homes in various stages of design, manufacture and delivery. We’ll be seeing a lot of Stein and crews. The goal is to get ‘em in as quickly as possible so we won’t be messin’ up the streets with heavy equipment when they are freshly paved this summer.
