Festival Keynote: Iain Campbell Saturday, May 7: 6pm“ The Misadventures of Bird Guides” will explore the unusual lifestyle that occasionally has one whizzing through five continents in the spell of three months, and reveals the world for what it is, a twisted, tortuous path of avoiding potential calamities, cultural confusion and cockups. Iain will take you through a series of adventures, from dealing with airline strikes and camel safaris gone rogue to defusing potentially disruptive situations on the Paki-stan-India border, and even accidentally invad-

Festival Headliner: Hot Spots in the Indiana Dunes!Dr. Ken BrockThursday, May 5: 11amThe shores of Lake Michigan generate wonderful concentrations of migrat-ing birds. Whether it's the longshore flights, the spring hawk flights, or the "migrant traps," there's a little something for everyone. Join the dean of Indiana Dunes birding, Dr. Ken Brock, to explore these wonder-ful hotspots that make the Indiana Dunes a birding paradise.

Festival Headliner: Conservation without Borders: The Southern Wings and 3 WarblersAllisyn Marie-GilletFriday, May 6: 11amMany of our landbirds migrate during the fall to tropical areas as far as South Ameri-ca. To ensure that good habitat exists for our species all year, Indi-ana has partnered with the Ameri-can Bird Conservancy and other state agencies to help build a wild-life corridor in Colombia through the Southern Wings Program. The corridor is specifically dedicated to the Cerulean Warbler, one of the most threatened warblers in South America and an Indiana state endan-gered species. This talk will explain the Southern Wings program and the Cerulean Warbler Corridor, while also giving a brief background of the status of the Cerulean Warbler and several other land birds that the corridor benefits.

Keynote and HeadlinersKeynote and HeadlinersFestival Headliner: Nathan Leopold’s Wolf LakeJoel GreenbergFriday, May 6: 9amLearn about birds and murder! The trip will begin inside the Dunes Visitor Center to learn about one of the Chicago area's most sensational murders, dubbed at the time the “Crime of the Century." Nathan Leopold had birded the Calumet region for years, a fact that helped police unravel this “perfect crime.” Afterwards, car pool to the vicinity for a little birding of our own with birding expert and storyteller Joel Greenberg.

Festival Headliner: The Secret Love Life of Birds!John SchaustSaturday, May 7: 2pmJohn's engaging and now famous talk will educate and entertain you! From promiscuous blackbirds, to dedicat-ed dads, when it comes to rivalry, competition, deception, fidelity, and cheating, birds can make the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” look tame by comparison. This is a program not to be missed!

Festival Headliner: Project SNOWstormSteve HuySunday, May 8: 11amWhen the massive invasion of Snowy Owls started in the fall of 2013 Project SNOWstorm pulled together the resources to develop a large scale collaborative research initiative. In just two years, a treasure trove of data has been gathered, including some new details of the behavior of these owls. Steve Huy, co-founder and co-director of both Project Owlnet and Project SNOWstorm, will discuss how this project came into being and what we have learned so far.

Festival Headliner: Tales of a Bad Birdwatcher!Gerald WykesSunday, May 8: 1pmIn attempt to boost your birding confidence by setting himself as the low bar example, Gerry Wykes will take you on an entertaining journey through the imperfect world of a career naturalist (and part-time birdwatcher). Awkward owl conversations, embarrassing mis-identifications, chickadee confessions, and a few tern jokes are in store but there are some good practical lessons to be learned along the way.

*Birding the Longshore Flight with Tropical Birding6am-10amIn conducive winds, thousands of migrant birds will pass the state park birding tower (by the beach west lot). Participants should expect lots of flyby species each morning as part of this ongoing migration research led by Brendan Grube. Participants report directly to tower.

*Dunes Area Big Morning led by Tropical Birding (FT)6am-11am (additional $10 fee)Log 100 species each morning with the guides from Tropical Birding! Each morning tour is led by van and will cover as much of the eastern lakefront as possible to record as many migrant and resident birds as possible. Expect birding to be faster paced with many great birding sites packed into one morning.

*Wolf Lake Birding By Kayakled by Audubon Chicago Region (FT)7am-11am (additional $36 fee)Truly a unique birding experience via kayak. Wolf Lake's proximity to Lake Michigan has made it a host of unusual birds. Historically, the lake was a complex of shallow wetlands, ponds, and beach. Today it encom-passes over 900 acres that straddles the IN/IL state line. Trip costs include kayak rental and guiding at Wolf Lake with Thomas Barnes.

Each day consists of morning tour options, followed by concur-rent afternoon sessions at our various festival base camps. Trips and activities needing pre-registration are marked with an asterisk.Additional registration is not required for afternoon presentations.(except Flying WILD and Wine & Waders).

WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW

*Western Lakefront Trapsled by Matt Kalwasinski7am-11amMatt will take birders to the popular migrant traps on the western lake-front (Toll Road required). Birding will include the Hammond Bird Sanctuary, but the group will also visit nearby Wolf Lake/Forsythe Park. These locations are known to produce a large number and variety of migrants, including warblers and thrushes. At the end of the tour, the group may visit the 129th St. Wetland Mitigation Area for shorebirds.

*Dunes NL Heron Rookeryled by Scott Namestnik (FT)7am-11:30am

*Galien Canopy Tower led by Kip Miller (FT)7am-11am A unique birding experience exists just across the Michigan state line. This tour will cover the Lake Michigan

and the Galien River County Park where one of a kind birding has been created on a 300 foot long canopy boardwalk, extending over 60 feet above the ground.

This site is a gem for spring birds and wildflowers, and we'll spend time looking at both. The linear trail along the Little Calumet River provides for deep wood-land birds and an assortment of warbler species. This is the only site in the Indiana Dunes to find Yellow-throated Warbler.

Hawkwatching for BeginnersPresented by Gerry Wykes1pm-2pm at State Park Nature Center“Hawkwatching for Beginners” is a quick and dirty introduction to the art and science of identifying flying hawks (if this were a book it would be called “Hawkwatching for Dum-mies”). There are some 17 species of raptors that spend some air time over Indiana but most don’t spend a whole lot of time here. The identifica -tion process, therefore, involves a quick assessment of pattern, silhou-ette, behavior, seasonal timing, and a bit of luck. We’ll take the first simple steps toward flying hawk I.D.

The Raptor Experience!Presented by Lake Milton Raptor Education Center1pm-2pm at the Dunes Visitor CenterJoin the Lake Milton Raptor Center for this close up look at some of the live birds of prey moving through the dunes right now. This fun and educa -tional look will feature many of the hawks, falcons, and even eagles that can be seen in the field this week at the festival.

Secret Love Life of Birds!Presented by John Schaust2pm-3pm at State Park Nature CenterJohn's engaging and now famous talk will educate and entertain you! From promiscuous blackbirds, to dedicated dads, when it comes to rivalry, competition, deception, fidelity, and cheating, birds can make the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” look tame by comparison. This is a program not to be missed!

Indiana Young Birders Youth and Family Birding Day!Presented by Indiana Young Birders Club10am-4pm at State Park Nature Center

Join the IYBC for a full day of birding activities, including special youth birder speakers, hands on activities, new birder walks, bird hikes in Spanish, bird games, bird quizzes, bird banding and more! All activities take place at the State Park Nature Center throughout the day.

Founded in 2011, the Indiana Young Birders Club has been bringing the wonder of birds to a diverse group of youth. With the addition of it’s annual Young Birder’s Conference, hundreds of young birders get a chance to interact with mentor birdwatchers, see birds up close in the wild, and gain a new respect for the natural world in which we live.

Support for this year’s Youth Birding Day at the Indiana Dunes State Park also comes from the Indiana Dunes Learning Center. More info at www.duneslearningcenter.org.

Native Gardening for the BirdsPresented by Steve Sass11am-12pm at the Dunes Visitor CenterGardening is one of the most popular pastimes in America, but how are our

populations? Steve will explore traditional vs. non-traditional "bird-scaping" with an emphasis on ecolo-gy and the food chain. Explore the right choices for your neighborhood and beyond!

Tropical Birding Tours tour leader, Sam Woods, will talk you through some of the best birding sites of a country that is inundated with great nature venues. There is simply too much to cover in one trip to a country that boasts the highest diversity of bird species anywhere in the world.

*The Misadventures of Bird GuidesKeynote Presentation by Iain Campbell6pm-10pm at Trinity Hall and Banquet Center • St. Patrick’s Parish(must pre-register for keynote)Being one of the owners of a Bird Tour company like Tropical Birding leads one to many adventures, and indeed, some misadventures. It is an unusual lifestyle that occasionally has one whizzing through five continents in the spell of three months, and reveals the world for what it is, a twisted, tortuous path of avoiding potential calamities, cultural confu-sion and cockups. Quite frankly, if it wasn’t so much fun, no one in their right mind would do it. And besides, a little insanity is practically a pre-requisite for this lifestyle. Iain will take you through a series of adven-tures, from dealing with camel safaris gone rogue and defusing potentially disruptive situations on the Paki-stan-India border, and even acciden-

too outrageous to have been made up, so it must be true. Evening Events Schedule: Doors open at 6pm Dinner at 7pm Presentation at 8:15pm Silent Auction and Vendor TablesCash Bar AvailableAll Times Approximate

distribution of birdlife in the Dunes more than any other single factor. Scores of avian species have been observed migrating along the shores of Lake Michigan, more or less parallel to the beach. Of spe-cial interest are the diurnal flights of land birds along the lakefront. These flights are most frequently noted in the spring. Large passer-ine movements are often detected by observers at the hawk-watch sites; counts exceeding several hundred individuals have been tabu-

lated within a few hours in May, including species such as Eastern Kingbird, Cedar Waxwing, Blue Jay, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, and Balti-more Oriole. The state park bird observation tower (West Lot) is a great site to witness this Great Lakes birding phenomenon.
