LINKING NORTHERN EUROPE WITH THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA, THE
MAJESTIC RHONE FLOWS THROUGH BURGUNDY AND PROVENCE.
On a seven-night cruise through the region, experience superb museums, cuisine,
and wine. Begin with a two-night stay in Nice, then continue to Arles to embark on
a delightful river journey. In Arles, visit the Romanesque church of St. Trophime,
the Roman amphitheater, and a cemetery dating from the time of Julius Caesar.
Alternatively, drive to Aix-en-Provence, which was once an early Roman settle-
ment. Tour Avignon’s impressive Palace of the Popes, and visit the lovely home
of a former Louvre curator before a wine tasting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Drive
to Grenoble to explore its museum, then step ashore in Mâcon to admire the
17th-century Château de Cormatin, and enjoy a private concert in the Orangerie.
Continue to Dijon, where a visit to the Musée des Beaux-Arts will reveal
masterpieces of 15th-century sculpture. In Beaune, discover the famous
tile-roofed Hôtel-Dieu. Conclude in Lyon, with its rich cultural and gastronomic
heritage. Optional postlude in Roanne.

As this brochure goes to print, we have not yet confirmed the faculty study leader for this program. We intend, however, that you will be joined by a Harvard lecturer who will enhance your travel experi-ence. You will discover that our lecturers are not only first-rate scholars and teachers but also friendly traveling companions, eager to share their insights through conversation as well as in scheduled presentations.
Also joining us will be author and historian Olivier Bernier from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, French language specialist at the Smithsonian Institute, Arthur Kaplan, and Yale professor Anna Zayaruznaya.

ST. TROPEZ / ARLES / M.S. AMADAGIO Stop in St. Tropez for a morning visit to the Musée de l’Annonciade, with its fine collection of modern art by Vuillard, Bonnard, Signac, and others. Lunch is at leisure in this seaside village. Continue to Arles—immortalized in the paintings of Vincent van Gogh—to board M.S. AmaDagio. Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board. B, D
Saturday, September 24
ARLES / AVIGNONToday you may choose to remain in Arles to visit the Roman-esque church of St. Trophime, one of France’s great treasures; the Roman amphitheater; and a cemetery dating from the time of Julius Caesar. Alternatively, drive to Aix-en-Provence, once an early Roman settlement. See the lovely 17th- and 18th-century architecture and fine collection of French paintings and sculpture at the Musée Granet. Following an onboard lecture, AmaDagio departs for Avignon this evening. B, L, D
Tuesday, September 20
U.S.A. DEPARTURE Depart the U.S.A. on an overnight flight to Nice. Wednesday, September 21
NICE, FRANCE Arrive in Nice, and transfer to the AC Hotel, located near the Promenade des Anglais. In the afternoon tour the lovely Musée des Beaux-Arts, housed in a Belle Époque mansion with an English-style garden. Gather for a reception with introductory remarks by your lecturers. NICE This morning visit the largest public collection of works by Marc Chagall at the museum dedicated to him. Following lunch, drive to Saint-Jean- Cap-Ferrat, where we stop at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild’s magnificent gardens over- looking the sea. Alternatively, explore Monaco’s famed casino and oceanographic museum. Return to Nice for dinner at leisure, perhaps at a restaurant along the Old Port. B, L

Sunday, September 25
AVIGNON Visit the medieval palace at Avignon, where six popes held court. This impressive building reminds us that money was no object when it came to building palaces and commissioning works of art. You may wish to have lunch on your own in this charming city. In the afternoon, join an excursion to see the Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard and admire the gardens of the Château de Saint-Privat, followed by a wine tasting. Or you may choose an afternoon visit to the elegant home and garden of a former curator of the Louvre in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, concluding with a wine tasting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. B, L, D
Monday, September 26
GRENOBLE From Tournon, drive to Grenoble to view one of the finest collections of 19th- to 20th- century art in France at the Musée de Grenoble. Alterna-tively, enjoy a leisurely day cruising up the Rhône River aboard AmaDagio, arriving this afternoon in Vienne, where the Grenoble group rejoins the ship. Attend a screening of To Catch a Thief in the lounge after dinner. B, L, D

OPTIONAL POSTLUDE ROANNE September 30-October 3, 2016 During a three-night stay in Roanne enjoy opportunities to experience extraordinary art, from the amazing Late Gothic church at Brou to the Romanesque basilica of Paray-Le-Monial, and see two delightful faience museums. Then, dine at the elegant Troisgros. Of all the great three-star Michelin restaurants in France, none has lasted longer and none today offers more superb cuisine. Exquisite flavors, perfect pairings, and the most serene of settings make a dinner here an experience of a lifetime. Accommodations are exclusively reserved at the Maison Troisgros for our group.

MACON / CHALON-SUR-SOANE Drive from Mâcon to the 17th-century Château de Cormatin, with its Gilded Rooms and delightful gardens. There, you will be treated to a private concert in the Orangerie. Return to AmaDagio for lunch and attend a lecture during a relaxing afternoon on the river. Arrive in Chalon-sur-Saône this evening. B, L, D Wednesday, September 28
DIJON / BEAUNE Drive to Dijon to see the spectacular 15th-century tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy and other treasures at the Musée des Beaux-Arts. The center of the city has many shops and bistros, where you may wish to have lunch. Continue to Beaune, residence of the Burgundian dukes until the 14th century, where we will discover the famous tile-roofed Hôtel-Dieu housing Rogier van der Weyden’s Last Judgment. B, L, D

RESERVATIONS, DEPOSITS & FINAL PAYMENT To reserve your space on this program, a $2,500 deposit is required per person. Please either call us at 800-422-1636 or 617-496-0806, or fill out and mail or fax the registration form. Reservations are acknowledged in order of receipt until the maximum enrollment has been reached. Your final payment is due 120 days before departure.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.
HEALTH ADVISORY This is an active program that involves extensive walking. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation.
CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of HAA Travels and the tour operator. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfare, and currency exchange rates in effect at the time of brochure printing and are subject to change. While the tour operator will do everything possible to maintain the published trip price, it may be necessary to institute a surcharge.
INSURANCE We highly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. An application for insurance will be provided by HAA Travels upon confirmation.
