FOUNDATION FOR PM&R

Research is Key to Advancing PM&R• Interdisciplinary research is the key to achieving the best possible outcomes for

individuals with disability.

• Investment in young investigators that fosters their pursuit of a career in research and provides them with the tools to succeed, enhances the research capacity of the fi eld of PM&R.

• Increasing physiatric research capacity in medical schools and teaching hospitals improves PM&R research capacity.

• All practitioners and stakeholders have a responsibility to fund the Foundation for PM&R, because the Foundation supports the future of PM&R...both for practitioners and for the patients we serve.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

Please carefully consider how you can leverage your professional

expertise and fi nancial resources to drive the future of our fi eld and our

patients through the Foundation. - Dexanne B. Clohan MD

I’m very proud of the impact your donation is having on our fi eld through the Foundation for PM&R. We’re providing start-up support to a new generation of researchers and seeking answers to important questions on how physiat-rists can facilitate improvements in our patients’ function and quality of life.

As you look through this annual report I’m sure you will be proud of the wide range of strategic programs supported by your gift to the Foundation for PM&R. You can be confi dent your gift is managed wisely; we keep expenses low, and depend on volunteers to drive our board and committees.

For busy people like us, charitable giving is driven not only by our personal passions, but by who asks us for help and whether it gets lost in an over-fl owing e-mail inbox or stack of mail. Research and education in PM&R is too important to be relegated to such vagaries. Please make the Foundation for PM&R a priority!

I urge you to carefully consider how you can leverage your professional ex-pertise and fi nancial resources to drive the future of our fi eld and our patients through the Foundation. I hope you will experience the gratifi cation in playing a growing part of this important enterprise.

Thank you for your support of the Foundation!

From the President

The Foundation for PM&R partners with the Association of Academic Physiatrists (with additional support from the Ernest W. Johnson Fund and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation) to provide an eight-week summer extern-ship program (Rehabilitation Research Experience for Medical Students, or RREMS), to give medical students exposure to physiatry and the opportunity to work with some of the leaders in the fi eld of PM&R research. The 2016 winners were:

FOUNDATION FOR PM&R13

With support from the Foundation for PM&R, the Association of Academic Physiatry implemented a Physiatric Research Consulting Program in 2014 to provide customized assistance for institutions committed to improving or developing a physiatric research program.

The objective of the Physiatric Research Development Consulting Program is to increase physiatric research capacity by providing customized assistance and recommendations for developing a physiatric research program for institutions currently seeking to expand or develop their research program.

To date, the Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Utah and Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation have participated in the program.

The “Proof of the Pudding” Debate was held on Thursday, October 20 from 9:00 to 9:30 PM. The crowd enjoyed coffee and dessert while listening to a lively debate on the need for special training to prescribe opioids.

Brian Bruel, MD, MBA (Baylor College of Medicine) argued in favor, and Martin Grabois, MD (Past President, American Academy of Pain Medicine) presented the case against. Foundation Treasurer Dr. George Kevorkian served as moderator. After the opportunity for rebuttal, the mic was opened up for questions from the fl oor.

The Foundation for PM&R is grateful to Dr. George Kevorkian (pictured), who conceived of the live debate format for addressing provocative topics and provided a generous targeted gift to continue the program annually.

Proof of the Pudding DebateDo Doctors Need Special Training to Prescribe Opioids? Physiatrists, too?

PAL Program BreakfastA mentoring opportunity supported by The Presidents Fund

In 2016, the Foundation for PM&R Presidents Fund hosted a mentoring breakfast for participants in the Association of Academic Physiatrists’ Program for Academic Leadership (PAL) during the AAP Annual Meeting, to allow them to interact with nationally-recognized leaders in the fi eld.

During the breakfast, the PAL participants were divided up among fi ve tables, with one or two past presidents seated at each table. Midway through, participants switched to a different table to maximize the opportunities for discussion.

Many thanks to the past presidents who have supported The Presidents Fund, and those who took part in the breakfast, including Bruce Gans, John Melvin, Barry Smith and John Whyte, among others.

AAPM&R Quality, Practice, Policy and Research Initiatives

Working together to support the future of physiatry

MACRA and the new Quality Payment Program (QPP) not only reform Medi-care Part B payments but also promise to improve care across the health care delivery system. It requires physicians to measure and report the quality of care provided - yet PM&R-specifi c tools do not yet exist.

To address this need, the AAPM&R is:- Partnering with the AANS to offer a spine quality outcomes database that

will serve as a template for additional physiatric registries- Developing physiatry-specifi c quality measures- Commenting on and/or endorsing clinical practice guidelines- Participating on the AMA Alternative Payment Model Work Group

The Foundation recognizes the value these initiatives provide not only to the specialty and the patients we serve, but as resources for physiatric research. For the last four years we have encouraged our donors to support these Academy efforts by making a directed donation to the Foundation.

Americans with Disabilities FundRx for Exercise Program (www.foundationforpmr.org/rx-for-exercise)

2016 brought the Americans with Disabilities Fund from a dream to expand on the vision of Dr. Henry Betts that physiatrists partner with their patients to work together to achieve fuller integration into all aspects of society, to a reality. Over the course of the year, with support from individual donors and the National Center for Health, Physical Activity and Disability, the ADF launched the “Rx for Exercise” program.

The program includes a FREE exercise prescription pad, which has been ordered by over 500 physicians in 8 different countries; webpages that are resources for both clinician and patient alike; and a mobile reference app for physicians on Google Play.

The goal is to provide physiatrists all the tools and resources needed to prescribe exercise, fi tness, and adaptive sport for an overall increased quality of life.
