General Rules and Regulations:
Membership
1. Any adult may be a member of the Cochrane
Agricultural Society and the Cochrane
Horticultural Society. Fees are $12.00 for the
current year. Members are entitles to exhibit at the
current fair in all Categories.
2. Fees of $12.00 will be deducted from prize
winnings of $14.00 or more, for membership in
the following year.
3. Juniors, in this book, refers to exhibitors ages 16
or younger. There is no fee for exhibiting in Junior
classes.
4. Juniors must exhibit in the classes for their grade
levels ONLY. Grade refers to their grade during
the previous year.

Exhibitor Forms and Entry Tags
5. Entry forms must include the exhibitor’s name,
membership number, address, telephone number,
and every item exhibited.
6. All items exhibited must be entered on the
appropriate current entry form. Items not entered
on the form will be disqualified. Completed forms
must be given to the secretary at the Fair desk.
7. All exhibits must bear the appropriate tag
containing the exhibitor’s name and membership
number. Tags must be folded to conceal the name
and number. Tags showing the exhibitors name
or membership number are a cause of
disqualification.
8. Items to be donated for auction are greatly
appreciated. If you plan to donate your exhibit,
please obtain a coloured sticker from the
secretary at the Fair desk to place on the entry
tag.

EXHIBITS
Exhibits may be brought to the appropriate
building on the Wednesday evening before the Fair,
between 7pm to 9pm, or Thursday morning between
9:00 and 11:30am
Entries will not be accepted after 11:30 Thursday
morning.
Entries in Fabric classes must be new, clean, the
work of the exhibitor, and exhibited for the first
time at this Fair. Exhibits in Fabric classes may be
judged by back and front.
Exhibits in Knitting classes must include a 6"
remainder of yarn.
Exhibitors may enter only one item in each
section in all classes except Cattle and Small
Animal classes, and Class 42, section 24 Quilt
Block Competition.

Class 55 Adult Photography
Exhibitors must be amateur photographers. Exhibitors
must not appear in their entered photographs. Print size
should be 4"x 6" unless otherwise specified. Developed
film, Digital, and Polaroid photographs are acceptable.

Animal exhibits are eligible for only one prize
except in special competitions.
Animals exhibited must be the property (owned
for at least 60 days) of the exhibitor.
Dairy and domestic products and Grains and
forages must be fresh, not preserved, of the
current year, and the product of the exhibitor.
Directors responsible for each class will determine
where and how items are displayed.
Exhibits must remain on display until 4:00 pm on
Saturday. Removing exhibits before this time is a
cause of disqualification.
Cochrane Agricultural Society and Cochrane
Horticultural Society Directors will take every
precaution to secure the exhibits. Fair grounds
will have security while exhibits are on display to
prevent accidental damage, injury, loss or theft.
Exhibitors must take the risk of exhibiting and
no compensation will be paid for damaged, lost
or stolen exhibits.

JUDGING
Judges may use their discretion whether or not to
award a first prize or any other prize in a section
with only one entry.
Prizes are awarded only for First, Second and
Third place unless otherwise published.
Exhibitors’ conversing with or otherwise
interfering with a Judge before judging is
completed is a cause of disqualification.
The Judge’s decision is final.

AWARDS
Awards will be presented at the Annual Awards
Banquet (date to be published in the local paper
and on our websites).
Awards for exhibitors not in attendance will be
mailed to the exhibitor at the address listed on the
Exhibitor Form. Please include your Post Office
Box number to ensure postal delivery.
All plaques and trophies awarded annually must
be returned to the Secretary at the Fair desk for
display at the beginning of the next Fair.

COMPLAINTS OR GRIEVANCES
Complaints or grievances must be lodged in
writing, and delivered to the Secretary of the
Cochrane Agricultural Society in care of P.O. Box
2552, Cochrane, Ontario, P0L 1C0, within seven
days of the close of the Fair. No verbal complaints
or grievances will be registered. Written
complains may be entered but will not be read
before the end of the Fair.
Complaints or grievances must be accompanied
by $10 which will be returned if the complaint is
deemed to be valid.
A Committee of Grievances will be formed by the
Directors, at the invitation of the President, to
determine whether the complaint or grievance is
valid.
Decisions by the Committee of Grievances are
final.

ADMINISTRATION
The members of the Administrative Committee
are the Directors, including the President, Vice-
Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer of the
Cochrane Agricultural Society.
Directors will disqualify exhibits and withhold
payment of award money in any case of fraud,
deception, or dishonest practices in preparation,
ownership or representation of any exhibit
intended to influence judging or eligibility.
At the discretion of Directors, in the case of fraud,
deception, or dishonest practices, exhibitors may
be prevented from entering items in subsequent
Fairs for one or more years.
Upon request, exhibitors must make a statement
of declaration to the Committee of Grievances that
articles exhibited by them conform to the Rules
and Regulations published in the Fair Book.
Refusal to make such a declaration will result in
disqualification and forfeiture of award money.

ANIMALS
Pets brought to the Pet Show must have two or
four legs, must be on a leash, or in a cage, and
must be the property of the person accompanying
the pet.
Examples of Pets Include: Dogs, Cats, Mice, Rats,
Pot Belly Pigs, Rabbits, Lizards, etc.
Pets brought for the Pet Show must be removed
from the Fair Grounds after the Pet Show.
Animals exhibits may be brought to the fair
between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
No pets are allowed on Fairgrounds while
livestock is present.

AGRICULTURAL CLASSES
Cattle Exhibiting Rules
1- All animals being exhibited must be in show

cane or show stick may be used; a cattle prod
may not be used.
5 -Animals must be at the Fairgrounds before

6 -Bulls aged over 8 months are not permitted on
the Fairgrounds.
7 -Cochrane Agricultural Society will not be
responsible for animals left on the Fairgrounds
after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Competition is open to Adult and Junior exhibitors.
Membership must be paid to exhibit in these classes.
Two exhibits per section are allowed for each exhibitor.
Cattle Exhibiting Rules

Definitions
Bloom : a single flower on a stem (remove extra buds)
Bud: a closed immature flower.
A bud is a bloom when it shows colour.
Stem: the stalk, may carry 1 or more flowers & buds.
Spike: a thick upright stem carrying several flowers.
Spray: a portion of the plant carrying several flowers on
short stems, and often foliage.
Display: may contain on or more varieties.
Collection: contains 3 or more varieties or colours.
Tips for Exhibiting
Cut stems as long as possible(6” or longer). Choose
open blooms free from blemishes. Foliage from the plant
should be included whenever possible. Note number of
stems, blooms, or spikes required. Narrow-mouthed
clear glass is the preferred type of container (bud vase,
small bottle) for Classes 23&24. Containers may be
weighted with small stones or marbles to prevent tipping.

Beat on low speed until smooth, scraping sides of bowls
with rubber spatula
In a large bowl, using cleaned beater, beat on medium
speed
6 Large egg whites and
1/4 tsp Cream of tartar
Add gradually, beating on high speed until peaks are stiff
but not dry
½ cup Sugar
With rubber spatula, fold 1/4 of egg white mixture into the
bowl, then fold in remaining egg white mixture. Scrape
into the 9" or 10" fluted pan and spread evenly
Bake 70 to 80 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the
centre comes out clean
Detach from pan using a thin knife around the cake
Cool on rack, right side up
Ice with your preferred icing

Section 1 Pound Cake from the following recipe
SOUR CREAM POUND CAKE
1. Preheat oven to 325 F
Grease and flour a 9" tube or 10" fluted tube cake pan
Have all ingredients at room temperature
( about 70 F or 21 C )
Whisk together until thoroughly blended
3 cups Cake flour, sifted
1/4 tsp Baking soda
1/4 tsp Salt
In a small bowl, combine
1. 1 cup Sour cream
2 tsp Vanilla
In a large bowl, beat until creamy (about 30 seconds)
1 cup Butter (unsalted)
Add gradually and beat on high speed until light and
fluffy (3 to 5 minutes)
2 cups Sugar
Beat in, one at a time
6 Large egg yolks
Add flour mixture in 3 parts, alternating with sour cream

Class 31 Baking
Exhibits must be displayed on a disposable firm surface such as a paper plate or
foam tray. All exhibits must be displayed in clear plastic covering. Tags must be out-
side the plastic covering. All baking must be at room temperature when deliv-
ered to the Fair. Canned fillings or commercial mixes are not to be used. Yeast
breads are to be baked in standard pans, approximately 9"x5"x3" except Sec-
tions 5 & 7. Sweet loaves may be slightly smaller. Baking cups are not to be used for
muffins. Cakes in sections 19-22 should measure 8" to10" in diameter. Winner of
Section 1, 60% Whole Wheat Bread, is eligible to represent Cochrane Fair at District
14 competition, where the winner will go on to compete at OAAS
Convention in February of the following year.
