Henry Ford famously said, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse .”

Visionaries start with the fundamental problem, not with current answers . Twenty years ago, Mr . and

Mrs . Old Bill created a new vehicle for fundraising that inspired all of us to enrich the community by

investing in local nonprofits .

In spite of its name, Old Bill’s Fun Run is full of youthful energy, and its 20th anniversary broke all

previous records . Combined with matching funds donated by Mr . and Mrs . Old Bill and 62 other

Co-Challengers, Old Bill’s 2016 raised over $12 .1 million .

Participating nonprofits received matching grants equating to 55% of the first $30,000 they raised

themselves . Over the past 20 years, Old Bill's Fun Run has raised more than $133 million because

of one couple’s visionary initiative . In 2016, one out of every three households participated in this

grassroots fundraiser where the median gift size is $250 .

At the Community Foundation, we help donors fulfill their visions by simplifying their giving and

providing guidance about critical issues in our community . By prudently stewarding resources,

offering flexible charitable giving options and opportunities to create lasting legacies in our valley,

the Foundation helps Jackson Hole address future needs as well as current problems .

We support nonprofits by providing essential funding through competitive and capacity-building

grants and by offering technical assistance and professional development .

Mr . and Mrs . Old Bill did not settle for merely revising old solutions . They continue to inspire

us to search for new and innovative ways to invest in our community and enrich our lives through

philanthropic leadership .

Carl William Knobloch Junior grew up on a farm in Stamford, Connecticut where

he learned the value of hard work and developed a passion for the great outdoors .

An entrepreneur at heart, Carl loved adventure . After graduating from Harvard, he

started Central Africa’s first drive-in theater and Rhodesia Chemical Corporation, then

sold those businesses, moved to New York and worked on Wall Street .

He led companies in finance, real estate and oilfield service and production, and

always made sure employees became equity owners so everyone could prosper together .

Carl’s work in the gas pressure business first landed him in Wyoming in 1998 .

Carl loved the natural world and was devoted to protecting natural resources for future

generations . This commitment led him to create the West Hill Foundation for Nature .

The Knobloch’s generosity also endowed the deanship of the Yale School of Forestry and

Environmental Studies, created the Emily and Carl Knobloch Environment Center at

Yale and endowed a professorship at the University of Wyoming .

The Knobloch Family Foundation has helped to fund a wide range of conservation projects,

including the identification and conservation of migration corridors for wildlife in

Wyoming, the establishment of a new national park in the Northwest Territories of Canada,

and the recent acquisition of the Antelope Flats section of Grand Teton National Park .

Carl and his wife Emily hold a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation,

and along with their daughter, Emily and her partner Robert Berlin, have been

Gold Co-Challengers of Old Bill’s Fun Run since 2006 .

We will remember Carl as an enlightened land steward and generous philanthropist .

Carl Knobloch

“The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets, which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in value.” –Theodore Roosevelt

Cal Mathieu radiated a contagious personality and undiminished curiosity throughout

his 99 years . Born in South Dakota, Cal grew up in Kansas and California . His work

influenced the Manhattan Project, the U .S . Department of Defense and NASA .

Other than mosquitoes, which he swore he would eradicate, Carl enjoyed everything about

Jackson Hole, including fishing, skiing, hosting cookouts along Granite Creek, raising

cattle and quarter horses, saddling horses on crisp mornings, riding with his children and

grandchildren, and watching sunsets on Buck Mountain .

Self-diagnosed with “Jackson-itis,” a condition with no cure or vaccine, Cal gave in and

purchased the 450-acre Aspen Ranch . His love for Wyoming inspired him to donate 360

of those acres to the Nature Conservancy, the first easement of its kind in the state .

Throughout his life, Cal had a passion for the Dodgers, ham radios, Marty Robbins

ballads, fixing things and taking his beloved wife, Margaret, wherever she wanted to go . Cal

and Margaret have been Bronze Co-Challengers of Old Bill’s Fun Run since 2000 and

generous supporters of a vast number of community projects .

We will miss Cal’s dry wit and constant good spirit . In his last few years of life if asked,

“How are you?” Cal would smile and answer, “I’m fine, for the shape I’m in .”

IN MEMORIAM

Karl Weber knew a good idea when he came across it . In the late 1960s, he created an

all-steel merchandising panel in his garage and went on to patent four of his own

inventions . In 1970, Karl founded Uniweb Inc ., and later co-founded Aerochem Inc .,

which milled metal for the aircraft and aerospace industries and helped reduce the weight

of space shuttles .

To make nature a bigger part of their kids’ lives, Karl and his wife, Tina, headed to

Jackson, where Karl began fishing, duck hunting and hiking . He knew immediately that

the move to Jackson was brilliant and became part-owner of Lost Creek Ranch . Karl’s

love of business blended with his love of the outdoors, and Lost Creek Ranch became

a successful dude ranch where guests could experience the Wild West . In 1987, Karl

and Tina came across a unique property along the Gros Ventre River and founded the

Gros Ventre River Ranch . Karl thoroughly enjoyed his role as host to the great outdoors

and general purveyor of fun .

Among his family and friends, Karl was famous for his storytelling and his collection of

antique Fords . An avid reader and card player, he relished when he got to “Shoot the

Moon” in a game of Hearts .

In 2000, Gros Ventre River Ranch became the first business Co-Challenger for

Old Bill’s Fun Run . Originally Bronze Level participants, Karl and Tina increased

their donation to Gold in 2014 and have continued as Gold Co-Challengers through the

Karl and Tina Weber Charitable Fund . Karl is also a member of the Community

Foundation’s Legacy Society .

We will remember Karl for his “Karl-isms” and his wonderful laugh .

CAROL & PETER COXHEADEveryone is aware of the treasures in this beautiful valley, but we do not always recognize the people that choose to live here . This valley attracts compassionate, committed people . That is the best-kept secret in town .

I got involved with the Community Foundation in my first six months in Jackson . I was seated beside Bill Newton at dinner one evening, and we talked about our shared interest in community foundations . His perspective on the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole was inspiring .

I was part of the group that started Old Bill’s 20 years ago . We knew it was a big commitment, but we had no idea of the potential; we were afraid no one would show up . I brought coffee and donuts for the volunteers, and we convinced the Snake River Grill to serve hamburgers after the run .

Carol: There was an energy and excitement about moving to Jackson when I arrived in 1989. Being surrounded by wildlife and nature every day is exhilarating—it helped me re-think my priorities and re-define my life. The genuine authenticity here is very special.

(4)

Page 7: 2016 - Community Foundation of Jackson Hole · creating a model for grassroots philanthropy . The Foundation has been a driving force here, giving nonprofits a voice and providing

Carol: Since my first day with the Community Foundation, I have been committed to the critical role it plays in Jackson by leading nonprofits and creating a model for grassroots philanthropy . The Foundation has been a driving force here, giving nonprofits a voice and providing everyone the opportunity to participate .

Peter: Philanthropy is a part of our lives . Each time you have the chance to give is special . My earliest experience with giving was through the family foundation my great grandfather established almost 100 years ago . It is still going and still helping people . That is what the Community Foundation is doing in Jackson .

INSPIRECarol moved to Jackson in 1989 from Connecticut. Originally from Nashville, she also lived in Atlanta, Chicago, and Raleigh, North Carolina. In Jackson, Carol joined the Board of the Community Foundation and chaired the Competitive Grants Committee. Carol also served on the boards of the Center for the Arts, the National Museum of Wildlife Art and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Peter is originally from New York City and lived in Connecticut and Florida before coming to Jackson in 1996. He was a pilot and flew commercial, private and military planes. The most interesting place Peter ever managed to land was a tiny island in the Indian Ocean named Diego Garcia. Peter served on the Board of the Grand Teton Music Festival and helped establish Tune-Up and other education programs at the Festival.

Married for fourteen years, Carol and Peter enjoy hiking, flying, sailing and traveling the world together. Between them, Carol and Peter have 7 children and 12 grandchildren, several of whom reside in Jackson.

Then somebody opened the floodgates and everyone appeared! We were thrilled by the response that first year, and the enthusiasm for Old Bill’s just grows and grows . It ignites everyone’s passion for the community, their love for this valley and its nonprofits . Through Old Bill’s, people can support individual nonprofits or they can be Co-Challengers to encourage everyone to give .

Peter: I became involved with Old Bill’s soon after I arrived in Jackson . As the new guy in town, it was fun to take a walk . I did not run; I walked . Old Bill's represents a community that is dedicated to making life better for everyone .

Jackson Youth HockeySPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND The Special Opportunities Fund was created in 2016 to provide financial support for newly formed Capacity Building and Collective Impact Committees . The Capacity Building Committee focuses significant resources on supporting the expansion and effectiveness of critical organizations in Teton County . Currently, the Committee is working extensively with One22, a merger of the Community Resource Center, the Latino Resource Center and El Puente . The Collective Impact Committee targets specific issues to explore root causes, develop objectives toward solutions and identify gaps in services . In 2016, the Committee convened stakeholders around issues of impending cuts in government funding and an increase in suicidal ideation among local teens . These Community Conversations brought nonprofits, government entities and businesses together, connected nonprofits with new resources and helped develop strategies to address these issues .

JEANINE & PETER KARNSMy grandfather proved up and received title to Karns Ranch in 1905 . Then he married my grandmother and got another 40 acres by having a wife, so they had 200 acres all together . In order to survive, they started doing things beyond just ranching . My grandfather supervised the crew that cut the first road over Teton Pass—before that, it could take two weeks to get here from Idaho .

As Jackson grew, my Dad and uncle subdivided Karns Ranch a little bit at a time . There are Karns’ first, second, and third additions . The ranch kept shrinking until it was down to just 42 acres, which is known as Karns Meadow today . At that point, my three sisters (Diana Brown, Donna Martin, and Betty Terrill) and I partnered with the Town and the Land Trust to create a park .

Peter: My family has deep roots in Jackson. My grandfather came here from Pennsylvania in 1895 and filed a homestead for 160 acres. There was a lot of land available in Jackson back then, so he staked a claim. Once you had land, you had to “prove up” by living there for five years, cultivating it and establishing it as your home.

Club to help rebuild them, and they agreed . It took almost ten years and about $500,000 by the time we were done . A fund at the Community Foundation facilitated fundraising to purchase all fifty thousand pounds of antlers . It was a huge project, and a lot of fun, because it was so well supported .

We also worked with the Community Foundation when we donated an appreciated residential lot . The tax benefits were substantial . I would be glad to advise anyone dealing with donations of highly appreciated assets . Both sides have to see it as the right fit, of course, but it worked out well for the Karns family .

Karns Meadow Park will be available for everyone in town to fish, hike and bird watch . The design has a three quarter mile loop path around the perimeter that will be great for hiking, jogging, and biking in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter .

My sisters and I are close; we’ve had lunch together every Monday for the last thirty years . Our father was born here; we were all born here, and we have kids and grandkids here that are 5th generation Jacksonites .

Jeanine: Pete and I got married in 1969 and have been married for 47 years . We met at the University of Utah and got hitched, and then had to spend a lot of time apart . Pete was in the 1972 Olympics .

Peter: I was drafted into the Army in 1968 and stationed in Anchorage, Alaska . I spent two years at a training center racing biathlon for the Army . In the Sapporo Olympics, I placed in two events . In the team relay, we got 6th place, and in the individual event, I was 14th . A US team has not yet surpassed the 6th place finish .

After my professional ski career ended, I got involved with projects whenever I saw a community need . Restoring the arches was a no-brainer . Walking through Town Square one day, I noticed the arches were rotting . I asked the Rotary

Olympian Pete Karns was born and raised in Jackson, Wyoming. He learned to ski on Snow King and has logged thousands of hours on the town hill. Pete remembers duck hunting in Karns Meadow when it was far out of town. The Karns family has been in the valley since 1895, and at Christmas, they rent the Senior Center and easily fill it with 30 to 40 “Karns-es.”

Jeanine grew up in Butte, Montana and went to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where she and Pete met. She has enjoyed calling Jackson home for over forty years. Pete and Jeanine love to hike, fish and spend time at their cabin in Alaska.

Pete loves both catching and cooking fish, and Jeanine cooks everything else. Pete regularly catches salmon, halibut, crab and cod in Alaska, and brings enough back to Jackson for an annual fish fry for family and friends. This year’s will be on August 21 to celebrate the solar eclipse.

Jeanine and Pete have three children and six grandchildren who all live in Wyoming.

Scott: The Wind River Mountains were a big a draw to Jackson too . As a kid, I visited Jackson and hiked in the Winds a lot . Those mountains are my cathedral, my church . I feel more spiritual in the Wind River Mountains than any place on earth . Pamela and I have hiked all through the Winds—even back to Gannett Peak .

Pamela: One recent trip in the Winds, we hired a packhorse outfit to take our food and camping gear in, and they dropped it at the wrong lake!

Scott: They left our food and tent four miles and 3,000 feet higher than we were planning on going . By chance, we came upon a few cowboys riding along the trail who said, “Do you think your stuff is at Clear Lake?” We said “Yes,” and they said, “Well…it isn't .”

Pamela: All of our camping trips in the Winds are memorable, but that one was especially so!

PAMELA & SCOTT GIBSONPamela: Eight years ago we moved to Jackson for the same reasons everyone does. It is gorgeous, it’s easy to get in and out, and the national parks are right here. The big surprise was how inspiring the community is, which is largely because of the nonprofits. We met most of our friends in Jackson through nonprofits; our community is the nonprofit community.

Page 21: 2016 - Community Foundation of Jackson Hole · creating a model for grassroots philanthropy . The Foundation has been a driving force here, giving nonprofits a voice and providing

Pamela: There are not many couples that like discussing good governance over dinner, but we both consider it a rare and beautiful thing . We feel a huge connection between the nonprofits we are involved with and those we support financially .

Scott: Giving through the Community Foundation has been great too . The team is awesome to work with—you cannot get the same personal touch and flexibility working with Fidelity or UBS . We have gifted restricted stock, and the support the Foundation provides has been excellent .

Pamela: We would never have come up with the idea of being Co-Challengers for Old Bill’s on our own, but we respect and love this community so much, it makes perfect sense .

Scott: The theory that you are backing what your community backs is really viable . It feels wonderful that this is what our community does, and that we are part of it . Last year, we had friends in from out of town the weekend of Old Bill's . I promised it would be a rich experience, but they were skeptical . By noon on Saturday, they were blown away, just as we are every year . Old Bill's is inspiring; it is what I hoped to find in a small town and more .

INSPIREScott: We feel blessed to live in this part of Wyoming . When we moved to Jackson, one of the first meetings I set was with the Community Foundation . I was on the Oregon Community Foundation’s board and have enjoyed serving on the Board and the Grants Committee at the Community Foundation here . The Grants Committee has been a phenomenal way to learn about the community . Seeing what we are doing for nonprofits and how much they appreciate our support is fantastic .

Pamela: We learned a lot during Scott’s time on the Oregon Community Foundation’s board . We saw how much Community Foundation staff knows about local needs .Whether it is Oregon or Jackson Hole, community foundations provide an overarching body of knowledge about nonprofits .

Scott: We also learned how fun it is to be involved with nonprofits in deeper ways, and that the hours you give make a big impact . As board members, we have helped hire executive directors, develop strategic plans and foster good governance .

Pamela Gibson was born in Sparks, Nevada, and attended the University of Nevada and the Oregon College of Art and Craft. She met Scott in Salt Lake City when he was on a ski and sales trip to Utah. They spent a day skiing together, and the rest is history.

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Scott Gibson joined Intel when it was a tiny startup in 1976 after attending the University of Illinois, where he earned a bachelors in electrical engineering and a masters in business. Scott spent seven years at Intel, and then co-founded Sequent Computer Systems, which grew to be a large public company he and his partners eventually sold. Scott is on the boards of a number of tech companies and served on the Oregon Community Foundation’s and the Oregon Health and Sciences University’s boards for ten years. In Jackson, Scott sits on the Community Foundation’s board and Executive Committee; chairs the Competitive Grant subcommittee for education and has twice been elected to the Board of Trustees of St. John’s Medical Center.

A professional artist, Pamela spent many years in Oregon creating large-scale tapestries. When the Gibsons moved to Jackson in 2009, she realized how different the light is and shifted her artistic focus to encaustic painting. Pamela currently has a thriving career as a painter and is a champion of arts and education. She was the founding board Chair for Jackson Hole Public Art, served on the Center for the Arts Board, and is now on the Board of the Center of Wonder.

Through their 37 years of marriage, Pamela and Scott have shared many of the same interests including skiing and hiking, but driving racecars is something Scott does on his own. The Gibsons have two sons who followed in Scott’s professional footsteps by starting companies. Pamela and Scott are thrilled to be a short flight from both sons, their lovely daughter-in-laws, and grandchildren.
