OBJECTIVES

At the end of the training, you will know:

•How to Locate NRI Points

•How to Locate the Farm Operator

•How to Identify the Area of Interest

Who is the “target” of the NRI-CEAP survey?

Since NRI-CEAP is an Area-based survey, the field surrounding the sample point is the “target” of the CEAP data collection. In order to collect information about the field, you must determine the current operator of the field.

County Maps

• Large map for each county in a state is available in the Screener App.

• All NRI points sampled in the county will be indicated on this map.

CEAP Screener Overview

Four Main Functions in Support of CEAP Survey:

• Verify operator who makes day to day operational

decisions for the field.

• Delineate the field border, including associated

conservation areas.

• Determine eligibility for the operator survey.

• Identify operators who have multiple fields in the

CEAP survey.

CEAP Screener Overview

•Screener is designed to function for screening without a wireless connection in the field, if the point has been previously checked out to the iPad.

•Wireless signal is needed:

• to check out points

• to save collected data to the server

• to return points

CEAP Screener OverviewSuggested Plan of Operation

•Before leaving for the field• Find a location where you have a wireless internet connection

• Check out all points you plan to screen during the day

•After returning from the field• Find a location where you have a wireless internet connection

• Open each “Not saved” point to ensure it saves to the server

• Return all points screened during the day, if not already returned in the field

The Screener Questions

•Three significant changes in the Screener questions for 2016.

•The prescreening question choices have changed.

•A comment is now required for all prescreening choices except “agrees to screening”.

•The first eligibility question has changed slightly.

3.Operator identified but refused screening.

4.Site changed since photograph was taken – point now falls on

Managed Grassland

• For 2016 CEAP, the term “pasture” has been replaced with “managed grassland” in the first eligibility question.

• The purpose of this change was to broaden the scope of grassland points that are eligible for CEAP operator survey data collection. The eligible grass points should not be limited to obvious agricultural pasture.

• For CEAP, managed grassland includes land that has a dominant vegetative cover of grasses, legumes, and/or forbs and receives some level of management, regardless of whether or not it is being grazed by livestock,.

• Management includes grazing, mowing, fertilization, brush control, weed control, or other management practices.

• Determination of managed grassland should be done via operator interview, not as a pre-screening enumerator decision.

Assign Unique Operator Number

•Continuing this process for 2016 CEAP survey. •New operator number cards will be provided for 2016 CEAP

•Purpose:•To accurately and quickly identify operators with more than one sample point, after screening phase is complete•To reduce the sample to one eligible point per operator, before operator survey data collection begins

Returning the Point

Points can be returned from either the “point survey screen” or from the

“checkout/my points screen”. Returning a point removes it from your iPad

and unlocks the point.

A wireless signal must be available to return points.

Example CEAP Points

• The following slides show examples of several points from the 2015 CEAP that were marked “Point is clearly not eligible for CEAP data collection”.

• All of these example points should be screened with an operator interview, except those showing urban development.

• Some points may be difficult to determine and fall into a somewhat “gray” area. Operator interview should make the determination.
