The history of the hickory sapling in the production of furniture dates back to the early 1800’s. As the pioneers crossed the Appalachain Mountains they stumbled upon this small diameter sapling and found it to be extremely useful in many ways. It was fast growing, straight as an arrow, and very durable. When the saplings were boiled, they could be bent to any variety of shapes and their inner bark could be woven for seats and backs.
It wasn’t too long before this amazing hardwood became a favorite for many of the homes of the day. In fact, some of the very first chairs produced for President Andrew Jackson’s home “The Hermitage” were hoop chairs produced entirely from the hickory saplings...hence the president’s nickname “Old Hickory.”
Over the years hickory furniture has stood as an icon of American history in many ways. Early in the 1900’s many of our national parks and lodges began using hickory furniture as its durability is unmatched. In face, the original dining chairs that were purchased for “The Old Faithful Inn” in Yellowstone National Park are still being used to this very day...over 100 years later!
In 1917 rocking chairs made from hickory saplings were purchased by Mrs. Henry Ford. In 1920 Crag’s Lodge in Estes Park opened with hickory chairs in their dining room. Like the Old Faithful Inn, those same chairs are still in use today! In 1935 much of the furniture for FDR’s Warm Springs (GA) presidential retreat were produced from hickory saplings. In 1955 Hickory sapling furniture was sent to Camp David (MD), the presidential retreat...and the history continues.
While the styles have changed over the years, many of the old fashioned manufacturing processes remain the same. The careful selection of saplings for each specific piece and meticulous hand assembly with mortise and tennon construction are good examples of some of the exceptional craftsmanship still being used today in each and every piece.
Almost 120 years later furniture produced from hickory saplings remains a top choice for both residential and commercial customer’s looking to produce high quality, handmade pieces that will last for the next 100 years.
Hickory Furniture
Our cicle sawn pine is reclaimed from the forests of Northern Wisconsin. In cooperation with sustainable forestry programs, we use only previously fallen “dead” trees. While these trees traditionally cannot be used for other industries, we have found that reclaiming these old giants at just the right rime yields a blend of colors in the wood that simply can’t be replicated.
We reclaim our trees several years after they have first fallen. This added “aging” time allows the elements to begin to add color deep into the grain of the wood. We then send them to one of the few remaining “old fashioned” sawmills left in the country. This particular mill has been in operation for almost 100 years (since 1925) and to this day still uses the good old “larger than life” circular sawblade that stands almost 4 feet in diameter!
Modern sawmills use band saw blades as they yield better efficiency and speed in production. However, the end product loses those old world circle saw marks that remind us of the trapper’s cabins of old. After milling, the product is then dried to the appropriate moisture content before being used in the production of furniture.

Co reserves the right to improve and/or change our product construction and/or specification without prior notice. • Every piece of reclaimed material, log, or hickory sapling has its own unique character and variances in diameter, size, texture, and color are to be expected. We make every effort to match up pieces during production in an effort to fill orders with a relatively uniform appearance, but pieces ordered at separate times MAY VARY substantially in texture and coloration. Ordering Information:• Minimum opening order - $1000• International minimum order - $2,000 USD prepaid in advance by certified check or credit card• Please fax or email all orders to (715) 934-2238 or [email protected] Pricing• All prices are F.O.B. Hayward WI, 54843. • Packaging and/or boxing is NOT included but is available upon request for an additional charge. • All prices are subject to change without notice• Freight cost is additional on all items. Order changes and cancellations:• We will accommodate changes to previously placed orders whenever possible. Changes on orders in production may be subject to additional charges and may delay shipment. Please call/email as soon as you are aware of any changes so we can expedite your request. • Cancellations are subject to a 25% cancellation fee. All products from Wildwoods Mfg. are hand crafted by order and therefore cannot be cancelled once the order is in production and the parts have been created. Storage:• Our storage capacity is limited, but we will store up to two weeks from original ship date without charge when capacity permits. Please let us know as soon as possible if there is going to be a delay in accepting product. Orders that have not shipped within two weeks of completion are subject to storage fees. Shipping:• All Wildwoods orders can be shipped Pre-paid, freight collect, or 3rd party collect. For the surrounding states, we also offer shipping on our own trucks/trailers. Shipping charges are the responsibility of the customer unless otherwise specified. As a courtesy to the customer, we can provide best way freight estimates upon request. Freight damage & Claims:• It is the customer’s responsibility to examine all products upon delivery for any damages. The customer should file all damage and loss claims immediately with the freight company. Any damage or missing merchandise (verifiable or suspect-ed) needs to be noted on the Bill of Lading before final acceptance of the merchandise. Warranty:• All Wildwoods Products are unconditionally warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from receipt of goods. With all solid wood and reclaimed products, checking, cracking, warpage, nail holes etc. are all part of the natural beauty of working with such products and are not to be considered defective. If such character ends up affecting the structural integrity of the piece, Wildwoods will replace accordingly under the normal warranty period. • Defective products will be replaced or repaired to your satisfaction at no charge. All warranty claims must be approved by Wildwoods in writing prior to returning product to the factory. Returns:• Products cannot be returned without written authorization from Wildwoods Mfg. Unauthorized returns will be refused and returned to the customer. Please call so we can help expedite the return.
