GENERAL INFORMATION

The Owen J. Roberts School District will offer several enrichment and academic opportunities this summer. All opportunities are self-supporting and may only be offered with sufficient enrollment. Students should bring personal snacks, drinks, and/or lunches as needed.

LOCATIONS There are several construction and summer maintenance projects taking place within our buildings; please note specific locations as they appear with each activity description. Special enrichment field trips may require travel to off-site locations, as appropriate (special permission must be included with registration).

REGISTRATION Beginning Monday, March 7, 2016 the brochure and registration form will be available online at http://www.ojrsd.com. The registration process will begin Thursday, March 10, 2016 and run through Friday, June 14, 2016.

Payments may be mailed in, delivered, or accessed online via eFunds for Schools. A delivered or mail-in payment saves families the online fee for use of credit services. The Administration Building is open from 7:00am- 4:30pm Monday through Friday to accept registrations.

ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION OPPORTUNITIES: Our brochure also lists opportunities that may require a separate registration process. There are FOUR Elementary Activities sponsored by SCIENCE EXPLORERS (SE). All registrations for these activities will need to be completed by accessing: http://www.scienceexplorers.com or calling 1.877.870.9517

FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE Checks or payments are to be made payable to Owen J. Roberts School District. All activity fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Refunds will only be made if a session is cancelled due to low enrollment.

TRANSPORTATION Families must provide transportation for students to and from activity locations. All field trip transportation will originate from the school where the course is held.

PROGRESS REPORTS Progress reports will be issued during the first week of July for high school academic courses only. Unless specifically stated with course information, all summer Academic courses will run from June 20th through July 21st.

ATTENDANCE Students are expected to be on time and in attendance for all activity sessions. In the event of illness or any other unforeseeable absence, please contact either the instructor or the school office.

CONDUCT and DRESS Students are expected to follow the same rules for summer program classes as they do during the regular school year. An infraction of the discipline code that warrants a suspension during the regular school year will mean an automatic expulsion from the Summer School Program. Tuition and Activity Fees will not be refunded if a student is withdrawn due to misbehavior or disciplinary violations.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY OPPORTUNITIES

ARTS & CRAFTS CAMP Students who love to be creative, get a bit messy, and are willing to experience a variety of art making techniques and materials will enjoy Arts & Crafts Camp! Artists, stories, cultures and traditions may serve as inspirations while students complete several unique and fun works of art. This camp is open to students who have completed 1st and 2nd grades. Please bring a peanut free snack and drink. ART CAMP: TRADITIONALLY & UNUSUALLY-MADE ARTS Students will have the opportunity to use traditional alongside of unusual materials or processes to create art. Students will explore many different mediums while creating a range of art incorporating fine arts such as sculpture, printmaking, signage, painting, and even garden art. Through manipulation of materials and unique combinations, students will touch upon many styles of art such as abstract, folk, and whimsy. Odd materials, tools, processes, and an opportunity to create are all provided for the creative and experimental artist. CAMP INVENTION THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELED Camp Invention reinvents summer fun! Some of our Owen J. Roberts’ “Odyssey of the Mind” coaches will lead a week of hands-on activities created especially for 3rd through 5th graders. Time will be spent constructing and personalizing a DIY solar-powered cricket with a unique habitat and disassembling electronics using real tools. COLLEGE APPLICATION BOOTCAMP

Rising seniors will have the opportunity to get a jump on the entire college application process. Essay instruction is provided by a certified English teacher. All other topics are delivered by an OJRHS school counselor. Detailed yet concise presentations on each topic are offered, followed by sessions for students to work on and potentially complete tasks. Interactive feedback with instructors is available throughout the course. Students will: work on completing their applications, including the Common Application; work with the instructor to determine an essay topic, write rough draft and receive feedback; learn how to understand/keep track of application requirements; learn and complete transcript/recommendation letter request process on Naviance; and receive information on financial aid and scholarships. This program is designed for students who have determined most, if not all, of the colleges to which they are applying and are ready to begin the application process. CULINARY TRIO CAMP Do you like to prepare food? The Culinary Trio Camp will provide supervised practice related to introductory cooking, baking and plate presentation/gourmet foods. Participants will gain basic cooking related skills such as proper knife handling, as well as cutting and preparation techniques. Come learn new skills and sample some of your own creations this summer at the High School Foods’ lab. Select-a-week: Week 1: JULY 5, 6, 7, 8 (8am- 12noon) Tuesday thru Friday Week 2: JULY 11, 12, 13, 14 (8am- 12noon) Week 3: AUG 8, 9, 10, 11 (8am- 12noon) Location: OWEN J. DINOSAUR DAYS Calling all dinosaur fans who will be entering into kindergarten and first grade in September… Do you love learning about these fascinating extinct creatures from long, long ago? Come join us for a week of fun and adventure. Activities will include: stories, poems, and songs about dinosaurs, dino-crafts, digging up fossils, snack-time, outside playtime, games, and learning fun facts about dinosaurs. Dates: JUNE 27, 28, 29, 30 (9am- 12noon) Location: FRENCH CREEK ELEMENTARY Grade(s): Students entering K-1 Cost: $75 ENGINEERS’ THINK TANK Do you love to build, design, and experiment? Do you have experience working with Lego Robotics or building structures to see how much weight they can hold? Are you ready to take your engineering skills to the next level? Led by two elementary Odyssey of the Mind and First Lego League Robotic coaches—students in ENGINEER’s THINK TANK will participate in activities to improve their robot design, programming, spontaneous problem solving, wooden structure design, and teamwork skills. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in a snowball fight, scooter city, tagging activities, and even a soccer game which are just a few of the many topics that will be covered. Focus for the daily activities will be on skill development, game strategies, and having fun. FIELD HOCKEY SKILL BUILDER Whether you have played field hockey before or have never picked up a stick, this clinic will develop the fundamental skills of field hockey while also having fun! We will focus on dribbling, passing, and shooting and how these skills can be used in game situations. Each day we will have a skill competition such as longest drive or best aerial dribbler. We will also scrimmage at the end of each session to apply our skills. Students are required to bring a water bottle, field hockey stick, mouth guard, shin guards, and eye goggles each day. FISHING: SUMMER CAMP GRADES 3- 5 Campers will have an opportunity to fish area waterways while receiving personalized instruction on freshwater fishing techniques including casting, tackle selection, fish identification, safety, and regulations. Transportation, live bait, and terminal tackle will be provided. Participants will need a light to medium weight fishing rod and reel, sunscreen, hat, brown bag lunch, water bottle and a change of clothes. (cost includes transportation, hooks, bobbers & bait) Choose a week: Summer Fishing Week 1: JUNE 20, 21, 22, 23 (7:30am- 2:30pm) Summer Fishing Week 2: JUNE 27, 28, 29, 30 (7:30am– 2:30pm) Location: Meet in front of OJR MIDDLE SCHOOL Grade(s): Students entering grades 3-5 Cost: $225

FUN w/SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS (9am- Noon---three days only) Do you love science and want to spend a couple days doing awesome science experiments? You will get to take part in hands on demonstrations, STEM activities, a K’Nex lab, and do some hands on fish identification. This program will include 3 half days (3 hours each day) of science demos and lab work. HEALTHY MIND & BODY CAMP Students will engage in problem solving, creativity and play through a variety S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. Students will exercise their mind and body through problem solving and play. They will participate in a variety of IPAD and outdoor activities. Additionally, students will learn about healthy food choices and will have an opportunity to make and eat a healthy snack each day. Dates: JUNE 20, 21, 22, 23 (9am- 2pm) Location: NORTH COVENTRY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Intermediate Commons/Computers Student Grade(s): Students entering grades 2-5 Cost: $125

INTRAMURAL SPORTS

Do you have more than one favorite sport? Did you ever want after school intramurals to last longer? If so “Intramural Sports” is the perfect camp for you! Campers will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of intramural sports to help enhance their understanding of sports for lifelong enjoyment. Activities will include team games in soccer, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball, and flag football among many others. Focus for the daily activities will be on skill development, game rules, and strategies. Athletes will need appropriate clothing and should be prepared to be outside or inside as weather permits. SPANISH CULTURE WORLD LANGUAGE CAMP ¡Bienvenidos estudiantes! Welcome to the exciting world of language learning! All K-2 students in the OJR district and beyond are welcome to participate in this fun, entertaining, and educational journal through Hispanic language and culture. Participants will learn the basics through song, dance, crafts, and much more! This four day enrichment program will cover topics such as colors, numbers 1-10, greetings and days of the week. Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to learn about the world! SPANISH CULTURE WORLD LANGUAGE CAMP ¡Vamos a españa! This four day course is designed for our older elementary students. Participants will learn the ins and outs of day to day Spanish. Kids will participate in games, listen to authentic music, and speak amongst one another in the target language. They will practice using greetings, clothing, seasons, weather, and more. Participants will also get a glimpse into the cultures and customs of Spain as we learn about the running of the bulls and carnival. Open their eyes to the amazing world of language learning! SPANISH CULTURE WORLD LANGUAGE CAMP ¡Un poco más de la cultura! This summer enrichment opportunity is perfect for the up-and-coming middle-schooler who wants to get a head start on the next year up to the 9th grader who wants more practice and culture! The course is designed to meet all the wants and needs of our young adult learners. We will discuss the cultures of Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, and more. Participants will learn to use the target language conversationally focusing on likes/dislikes, family, and food! This class will even include a day for students to make their own quesadillas and enjoy all that the Spanish language has to offer. Come learn how to make your very own TED talk...We will explore what makes a great TED talk and offer the guidance and materials needed to create your very own "idea worth sharing"! Students will learn how to play the game and correctly keep score while doing so. All you need is a tennis racquet, sneakers, sunscreen, a water bottle and a positive attitude. There are two separate weeks of tennis camp from which to choose. TAKE A DIVE (9AM- 3PM) Dive into the world of marine biology and oceanography! In our half day camp you’ll dissect a real shark, participate in a fisherman’s challenge, examine the anatomy of a fish and learn the ancient technique of gyotaku or “fish rubbing”, learn to survive at sea with a homemade solar still, create a kelp forest and make your own submarine. Stay for the full day camp and come face-to-face with some unique sea creatures! You’ll complete a squid dissection, bring to life genuine Triassic Triops, conduct a whale adaptations lab, and examine many weird wonders that live under the sea! Is it science or magic? You’ll find out! In our half day camp you’ll create erupting foam monsters, conduct amazing air pressure experiments, dig for hidden treasures, investigate the science of illusions and build spectroscopes to view the spectrum of different types of light. Stay for the full day and we’ll reveal many mysteries of science as we investigate creepy creatures, learn troll tricks, capture a rainbow in a bottle, make instant snow, mix up glowing slime and conduct lab tests on mystery substances. Forensics Academy (New for 2016!) 9AM- 3PM Become a Science Explorers CSI! We’ll use forensic techniques to document a “crime scene”, lift fingerprints, complete an analysis of mystery powders, conduct simulated blood testing, extract DNA from strawberries, perform fiber analysis, and use a black light to reveal glowing evidence. See if you’ll be the one to crack the case! Full day camp only for ages 7-11. Roberts High School NORTHWING GROUND LEVEL + HS1114 Target Group Course Placement & acceleration opportunities for students entering grades 7-12 Hours: 8:00am - 11:30am

PLEASE NOTE: The summer math courses do not count in the student grade point average (GPA). Students who pass a course can earn placement into the subsequent math course. Per Board regulation 213a, rising 9th graders will not earn high school credit by passing this course. However, they may count for academic placement. Rising 10th-12th graders will earn high school credit upon passing a summer course.

For credit to be awarded, students are expected to work at an accelerated pace and pass the final exam. These courses are standards-based and accelerated in nature. Students will receive letter grades based on meeting standards set forth in the curriculum. Those who are unsuccessful in meeting these standards will not be penalized. Changes to future year schedule will not be made until the summer course is completed and grades are submitted.

MATHEMATICS COURSE PLACEMENT & ORIGINAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES Please contact Mr. Dennis Fletcher (District Mathematics Supervisor) for any specific Mathematics acceleration questions or course placement at [email protected] or call (610) 469-5368. Algebra 1A. MS167 (This course will be taught at the Middle School location). (Cost $150) This course develops algebraic concepts by applying previously learned arithmetic topics. Emphasis is placed on the use of calculators and computers and stresses applications of algebra. The selection of Applied Algebra Parts 1 and 2 will place the student in a two year course that will cover topics of a first year algebra course, as well as review topics of arithmetic. This course is not open to students who have successfully completed Algebra 1 or above. A scientific calculator is recommended for this course.

Algebra 1B. HS Northwing Room 1008 (Cost $150) Students completing requirements for this course will take the State Algebra I Keystone Assessment (as mandated by PDE) following the conclusion of the course between August 1- 4, 2016. This course is the second half of Algebra 1 and focuses on preparing students for Algebra 2. Students will study systems of linear equations, exponential functions, polynomials and factoring. Quadratic, rational and radical functions will be explored and studied. Graphing calculators will be used to look at functions in depth. A graphing calculator is recommended for this course.

Geometry. HS Northwing Room 1010 (Cost $150) This course is at an accelerated pace for students who demonstrate advanced mathematics ability. The main emphasis is placed on applications of Geometry, the algebra skills needed for Geometry, and use of deductive reasoning in order to prove various geometric theorems. A graphing calculator is required for this course. Algebra 2. HS Northwing Room 1011 (Cost $150) This course continues to develop concepts of Algebra 1 and Geometry for students who demonstrate exceptional ability in mathematics. It expands topics introduced in Algebra 1 and introduces more advanced algebra topics. A graphing calculator is recommended for this course. Pre-Calculus. HS Northwing Room 1013 (Cost $150) This course reviews and expands upon topics from Algebra 2 and introduces and develops concepts of trigonometry for students who demonstrate exceptional ability in mathematics and who plan to take AP Calculus. More emphasis is placed on elementary concepts of calculus. A graphing calculator is recommended for this course.

SCIENCE OPPORTUNITY FOR ACCELERATION INTO HONORS BIOLOGY Please contact Dr. Heidi Lehmann (District Science Supervisor) for any specific Science acceleration questions at [email protected] or call (610) 469-5169. Topics in Earth Space & Environment. HS Northwing Room 1114 (Cost $150) This Earth Science course is designed to give students an opportunity to acquire knowledge, appreciation and understanding of the earth, its atmosphere, and the natural universe. A course test average of 88 is required to utilize this course as placement to advance into Honors/CP Biology. Earth Science is an interdisciplinary course with content that focuses on: the nature of science, astronomy, meteorology, and geology, including plate tectonics. Emphasis is placed on using problem solving techniques to explore our relationship with the earth and the environment in which we live through observation, experimentation, performance, and study. This course is the first step in preparing students for the Biology Keystone Exam through the chemistry and ecology unit. THIS SESSION HAS BEEN CANCELED.

PLEASE NOTE: The summer online and classroom versions of Health 2 are accelerated courses covering the materials typically offered over an entire school year. These courses will be offered in the summer between June 20 and July 21, 2016. Both of these course options will also be available during the school year as part of the schedule at no additional cost. Please also be aware that the summer online course runs during the same timeline with the same expectations and due dates as the summer classroom course. This expectation includes 3-4+ hours of daily work to complete a semester of coursework in 5 weeks.

ONLINE Health 2 Online registration for ONLINE Health2 participation closes June 10, 2016. Course access to D2L and pre-requisite work (password and account creation) will be available June 13, 2016. Students must be ready to begin course requirements by June 20, 2016. Students with vacation plans or other summer obligations should keep the following expectations in mind. The online course will move quickly. Expectations for online students include: 1) students must have internet access 2) students must be disciplined to access course content on a daily basis 3) student must communicate regularly with the instructor and with class peers 4) students must exercise successful time management and consistently complete course projects by the given deadlines. This course does not count in student grade point average (GPA). The course is worth .6 credits. It does count towards the Health graduation requirement. KEYSTONES REMEDIATION OPPORTUNITIES THIS SUMMER: FREE Sessions will be available on an “as-needed” basis during the month of July in Literature, Algebra 1 , and Biology. DATES TBD. NOTE: These opportunities are available for students who were not proficient on a previous administration of either the Algebra I, Biology, or Literature Keystone Exams. Students who have not yet taken these tests cannot be enrolled into remediation sessions. TESTING: State Keystone Re-testing will be take place AUGUST 1-4, 2016.
