INTRODUCTION

Social sciences as defined in the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences by

Edwin R. A. Seligman are “those mental or cultural sciences which deal

with the activities of the individual as a member of a group.” The major disciplines under social sciences include anthropology, economics, geography,

history, law, political science, psychiatry, psychology, sociology and statistics. Seligman also mentioned about semi-social sciences like ethics, education, philosophy and psychology and sciences with social implications like biology,

geography, medicine, linguistics and art. These various disciplines are therefore essential in understanding diverse social issues and concerns that

affect not only the youth and the nations of the world but the whole humanity as well.

Founded on the importance of the disciplines of social sciences, the Borres Youth Leadership Institute or BYLI

organized the International Social Science Camp (ISSC). Since 2014, it has provided

avenues and opportunities for young people and educators to develop their

basic understanding of the various disciplines of social sciences that will equip them with the 21st century skills to become life-long learners.

In line with the policy of Republic Act No. 10533 otherwise known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” to produce “graduates of basic

education who are empowered individuals who have learned, x x x x the foundations for learning throughout life, the competence to engage in work and

be productive, the ability to coexist in fruitful harmony with local and global communities, the capability to engage in autonomous, creative, and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others and one’s self”,

BYLI is continuously implementing innovative and relevant programs and activities to develop students and teachers to become responsive citizens for

nation-building.

The International Social Science Camp also features programs and activities with foreign and local delegates from ASEAN member countries that

will help strengthen the goal of ASEAN Community Integration of building ONE ASEAN identity. Other foreign delegates at the ISSC will provide support to the prominent role in youth development of the World Program of Action for Youth

of the United Nations as the camp offers discussion on national and global issues and understanding cultural diversity. Other activities include

BYLImpics, International Academy, International Night, Institutional Visit, young Leader’s Forum, Plenary Sessions, Teacher’s Conference, Philippine

Night, Social Sciences Competitions and Kilos Kabataan Kabataan Youth Project presentation.

"We need the social sciences in order to

address the challenges of global change.

Social scientists bring a wealth of knowledge

about processes of social transformation that

environmental change and sustainability". - Alberto Martinelli, President, International Social Science

Council
