HISTORYThe origin of the name ldquoCoosrdquo is open to discussion In the Hanis Coos Indian language it meant ldquosouthrdquo or ldquosouthernerrdquo The Hanis and the Miluk

Coos people lived from time immemorial along the sloughs and streams the bayshore and the ocean beaches of what has been known since about 1850 as Coos Bay They were the southernmost people known to the Chinook Indians at the mouth of the Columbia River who met with Lewis and Clark in 1805

Sir Francis Drake is said to have found shelter for the Golden Hinde in the south cove of Cape Arago in 1579 but it was not until 1826 that Europeans actually set foot on the shores of Coos Bay A brigade of the Hudsonrsquos Bay Company trapped and traded for beaver furs during that winter and Jedediah Smith with his fur company passed through Coos Bay on their way north during the summer of 1828 There were no more Euro-American visitors at Coos Bay until January 1851 when an Army resupply ship the Captain Lincoln crashed on the North Spit during a violent storm All were saved and their reports of the amenities of the area and the friendliness of the resident Indian people drew the first permanent white settlers in the summer of 1853

Population growth came slowly but was stimulated by extractive industries beginning with gold discoveries south of Coos Bay in 1853 Coal under-lying the Coos Bay area was mined and shipped to San Francisco from 1856 until well into the twentieth century The first two sawmills on the bay ndash the Henry Luse mill at Empire and the Simpson mill and shipyard at North Bend ndash began operations in 1856

Wood products were the mainstay of the economy and the greatest spur to growth during the twentieth century especially after 1908 when the CA Smith Lumber Company opened the ldquolargest sawmill in the worldrdquo at Bunker Hill The economy also benefitted from specialty agricultural products such as apples cheese and cranberries Maritime industries that grew included commercial fishing and oyster farming Most recently the economy has become increasingly dependent upon the service trades ndash particularly government medical and education

The city of North Bend was originally named Yarrow possibly after the flowering plant a river in Scotland or a vessel The name reflects its geographic location at the north bend of the Coos Bay channel Timber baron Asa M Simpson and his son Louis were major players in the townrsquos early develop- ment With North Bend at the center of their vast timber holdings the Simpsons built a number of large sawmills and shipyards Another prominent figure was Vern Gorst a member of aviationrsquos Hall of Fame whose land water and air service provided the embryo of United Airlines He was a major figure in the townrsquos transportation improve-ment and expansion Today North Bend is home to 9730 people and enjoys a diversi-fied economy including a US Coast Guard air station Pony Village Mall (the largest enclosed shopping mall on the Oregon coast) dozens of restaurants plus antique stores and other unique shops throughout its down-town area With historic and picturesque McCullough Bridge serving as the Bay Arearsquos northern gateway on Highway 101 the city also welcomes travelers at the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport This new facility provides the regions commercial passenger and freight service as well as general aviation facilities

County Coos Bay was established in the 1850s as Marshfield named for the Massachusetts birthplace of founder J C Tolman The town was incorporated in 1874 but in 1944 its name was changed to Coos Bay by a vote of the residents Years later the cities of Empire and Eastside merged with Coos Bay and today all exist as one city With a current population of 15967 Coos Bay continues to be the commercial center of Oregonrsquos south coast with growing retail service and professional economic sectors

The downtown area is a popular stop-ping place for travelers using US 101 the coast highway which passes right through it

Visitors and residents alike enjoy strolling on the Coos Bay Boardwalk They find treasures in the gift and antique shops nearby and refresh themselves at the numerous espresso bars and national fast-food franchises More than a dozen locally-owned restaurants close by offer American Chinese German Italian and Mexican cuisine

Bay the unincorporated community of Charleston is the arearsquos commercial and sport fishing center providing seafood processing and support services The Charleston Marina Complex operated by the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay provides moorage for commercial and pleasure boats and can accommo-date more than 550 vessels Charleston is home to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and the US Coast Guard Lifeboat Station It is also the gateway to major recreation areas at Sunset Bay Shore Acres and Cape Arago State Parks Bastendorff Beach County Park and the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve Interpretive Center

Festivals and parades drawing thousands of locals and visitors include Coos Bayrsquos Blackberry Arts and Fun Festivals North Bendrsquos July Jubilee Clambake Jazz Festival and Charleston Seafood Festival

Since 1978 the Oregon Coast Music Association has sponsored an annual Music Festival The 2015 dates are July 11-25 Residents and visitors enjoy the luxury of a nationally-acclaimed first-class music festival in a charming small-town setting The eclectic program features everything from classical orchestra concerts to jazz and folk performances in venues throughout the Bay Area

Every Tuesday in September Music On the Bay welcomes great performers to the Mingus Park outdoor amphitheatre The sloping hillside overlooking a lake
