The HHP Board adopted a budget for 2016 that projects an increase in your annual assessment of $22 or $1.83 per month over 2015. The assessment for 2016 has been set at $1,109 if you pay by credit card and $1088 if you pay by cash or check for an improved lot, and $665 if you pay by credit card and $653 if you pay by cash or check for an unimproved lot. In June of each year, the HHP Board adopts specific guidelines for staff to use in compiling the budget. Based on these guidelines, the Department Heads develop their individual department budgets. The General Manager and the Assistant General Manager review this work and predictably changes are made to the Department Head’s submission. The Department Head must defend every line to the General Manager and the Assistant General Manager. The draft is refined and a meeting consisting of the Department Head, the General Manager, the Assistant General Manager, and the Chair of the committee (who is a POA Board member) in that particular discipline is constituted. Each specific area of the proposed budget is scrutinized in this manner. After these meetings have been held and appropriate adjustments have been made, the draft budget is sent to the Finance Committee. Further adjustments are made as necessary based on this input. The process culminates with a thorough review by the Board and still further adjustments as necessary to the bottomline. Commercial Pass revenue was up again in 2015 and is budgeted up for 2016. President’s ReportBOO! Isn’t it scary how quickly this year is racing by? Here we are in mid-October, the days are growing shorter, and 2015 seems to be sprinting to a close. Halloween is upon us and Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve will be here in a flash. I find it a little scary how quickly time seems to speed up with each passing birthday. I consider it a reminder that we should live life to the fullest, focus on the positive, and savor each day as best we can. Living here in Hilton Head Plantation gives me many positive things to focus on and makes me thankful that I chose to live here and be your neighbor. Time is much too precious to waste on negative thoughts.

It is no accident that HHP is the premier plantation on Hilton Head Island and that we are surrounded by abundant natural beauty and a multitude of amenities. Throughout the years, many of our neighbors have volunteered their time, effort, and life experience to help govern and shape our community. They have volunteered to serve on the Board of Directors or as Committee Members who advise and make recommendations to the Board. It is once again that time of year for you to consider submitting an interest form to serve on the Board or on one of our committees. Our plantation thrives on volunteerism and we all have a lifetime of experiences and something worthy to contribute in helping to maintain and improve our little slice of paradise.

The budget was unanimously approved by the Board and our annual increase will be $22 for 2016. I thank our General Manager, all of our Department Heads, and staff who are cost conscious and hold the line on spending while providing top notch services. Delivering great value for your association dues is the focus of your Board of Directors as well as the employees who work for you here in HHP.

Last month, I welcomed Advantage Golf as the buyer of Bear Creek Golf Club and this month I welcome Brown Golf as the buyer of Dolphin Head Golf Club. The Board of Directors expended great effort to protect the investments of our neighbors who live along the golf courses, as well as ensure the future health of our entire plantation. When all was said and done, our goals were accomplished. The closing dates for both are approaching shortly. I feel confident that our new neighbors at Advantage and Brown will be beneficial to HHP and wish them great success in their new acquisitions.

Veteran’s Day will be on Wednesday, November 11 (HHP’s observance ceremony will be on Thursday, November 12, 4:30 PM, at the Plantation House. See page 22 for details.). It is a time to honor those military personnel who have given life or limb or suffered mental anguish to preserve our freedom and our way of life. It is also a time to honor all who have served or are currently serving in our military. May God bless them and may God bless our wonderful country. Flying the Stars and Stripes should not only happen on Veteran’s Day, but should happen on every day of the year. It’s a great way to show our appreciation for their sacrifices and our own pride in being Americans. Freedom is not free and it is our veterans who have paid for our ticket. Please let us thank them by flying the flag.

We want to hear your thoughts and opinions about plantation issues and encourage you to contact us at (843) 681-8800 ext. 9 or email: [email protected] or contact me directly at [email protected].

Coffee with PeterOur last Coffee of the year will be held on Thursday, November 19, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Our special guest will be Kathy Bateson, the Executive Director of the Hilton Head Island Arts Center.

Spring Lake Pool ClosingThe Spring Lake Pool closed on September 7 to allow for construction to begin on the new pool. Due to our excellent relationship with the Country Club of Hilton Head, they have allowed HHP property owners to use their outdoor pool until the end of October 2015. The Country Club’s hours of operation are as follows: Monday through Sunday, Noon to 6:00 PM. Food and drink are not permitted to be brought into the Country Club’s pool area; however, food and drinks may be purchased at the poolside snack bar via cash or credit cards. We are guests of the Country Club. If you visit the Country Club, please take a moment to read the rules which govern their facility, which may be slightly different from HHPPOA’s. The CCHH’s pool rules are conspicuously posted inside the pool area. We want to thank the leadership at the Country Club of Hilton Head for this extension of courtesy to the property owners of Hilton Head Plantation.

New Spring Lake PoolAs you may have noticed, demolition of the old Spring Lake pool has been completed. This area will be busy for the next nine months, so please exercise caution when

rein on expenditures, kept the assessment increase at a minimum level. The Landscape Maintenance contract will go up by the CPI in 2016. Several expense centers have no or very small increases over 2015 levels. We budgeted the new Spring Lake pool for only part of the year and increased staffing levels to reflect a larger and more complex facility. We used estimates for many of the needed services, which will be adjusted for 2017 once we have some experience with the operational costs of the new facility. We continued to maintain the reception function at 2015 levels due to lower customer activity. The need to reinstate a full-time position, as well as additional ARB support, may arise if the economy and real estate sales continue to improve. Due to our partnership with the Town of Hilton Head for stormwater maintenance, we were again able to reduce our operating budget for repairs in this area. Franchise fees should increase further if AT&T locates on the monopine in 2016. The 2016 Budget includes additional funding for construction oversight and third party testing for the new Spring Lake pool.

using the parking lot and other open spaces adjacent to the work area. We have asked that the expanded parking be constructed by the end of 2015, if possible, to provide for some additional spaces to help offset the parking spaces that can no longer be used while construction is in progress. The area where the old pool was located has been filled with the dirt that was stockpiled adjacent to the tennis courts. Once the filled area is compacted, the shape and contours of the new Spring Lake pool will be sculpted. There are a variety of vantage points where you may watch the progress of the construction.

Hargray Lowcounty BroadbandHHPPOA and Hargray Communications kicked off this initiative on September 22, with two standing room only meetings. At press time, two other Q&A meetings were scheduled for: October 7 and October 21, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Please RSVP to: [email protected] or call 843-681-8800 ext. 0.

Hargray Communications is embarking on a Lowcountry Broadband initiative. Hargray is proposing to wire all of Hilton Head Plantation with fiber optic cable and, if you sign up, bring a fiber optic connection right to the wall of your home. We are only one of three communities in the HHI area that are being considered for this “future proofing” installation.

Fiber optic cable, as a transmission device, has the capacity to deliver data, Internet, phone, and video services at speeds only limited by the capability of the electronics needed to send and receive the signals. Such an upgrade to HHP would add optimal service and value to your home.

What’s the catch? Hargray is willing to install a multi-million dollar network in HHP in exchange for two commitments: at least 50% of the residents sign a two-year contract for service and subscribe to at least 15 Mbps of high speed Internet. If you, as a property owner, make the commitment noted and we reach the 50% requirement, Hargray will run fiber optic cable right to your home.

How do you sign up? See the form on Hargray’s insert in this edition of Plantation Living. Fill out the form, sign it, and either drop it off at the POA Service Center (7 Surrey Lane) or mail it to PO Box 21940, HHI, SC 29925 with a check for $25 payable to HHPPOA. The check is a deposit and will only be cashed if we reach the 50% goal by December 11, 2015. The proceeds will be sent to Hargray and posted as a credit towards your first bill when the new service is installed. If you are an existing Hargray customer, you will not be required to provide the $25 deposit. If we do not make the 50% goal, your check will be returned.

General Manager’s Report(cont'd. from page 3)

If you decide to take Hargray’s service in the future, after they have passed your home with their fiber optic installation, there will be an additional charge to run the fiber optic cable from the street pedestal to your home.

The HHPPOA Board feels strongly that the construction of an integrated fiber optic network throughout HHP and the high speed Internet capabilities it would foster would add to property values and open the door to all manner of advanced Internet, data, and video services.

Monopine/Cell Phone ReceptionWe have been informed by personnel with Crown Castle International, the owner of the monopine, that AT&T will start staging their equipment for installation. We were advised earlier this year that AT&T would start their installation around Thanksgiving 2015. That timeline has been moved up by AT&T. We are hopeful that AT&T will be transmitting over the monopine by the end of 2015.

During the installation of AT&T’s antenna array on the second slot on the monopine, “camouflage socks” will be installed over both the Verizon and AT&T antenna arrays to further conceal the installation. You will see activity, and at some point a crane at the monopine site, during the installation process.

We will keep you apprised of progress as we receive information from Crown Castle International and AT&T. This installation will improve coverage for AT&T customers in the service area of the monopine.

Turkey TrotAn early reminder that Thanksgiving is just around the corner and with Thanksgiving comes…turkeys, and with turkeys comes…the annual Turkey Trot. On Thanksgiving morning some of our roads will be used for the Annual Turkey Trot sponsored by the Island Recreation Center. This event consists of a walk, which will be conducted in the Chinaberry community, and 5k and 10k runs. The 5k and 10k runs start at Schilling’s Boathouse at 8:00 AM. Runners will come through the Cypress Gate and run on Seabrook Drive to the Dolphin Head Recreation area where they will retrace their steps back to the Cypress Gate to the finish line. If you are traveling on Thanksgiving morning, please plan on using the Main Gate between 8:00-10:00 AM to avoid delays. This is a great family event and is open to all residents of the Plantation. For more information on how to sign up for the Turkey Trot, give the Island Recreation Center a call at 681-7273. (See page 5 for more details.)

Call for CandidatesLooking to serve your community? Three seats on the POA’s Board will be decided early next year. An application for Board candidacy is enclosed for your consideration. The POA Board meets once a month and each member chairs at least one committee. This is an excellent way to give back to the community. The POA Board is a policy-making body; they receive input from a group of advisory committees also comprised of residents. A professional staff carries out the policies of the Board and administers the activities of the POA.

Previous experience on one of the POA’s committees is strongly recommended for those seeking to be nominated as a candidate. Please see the article on page 8 for more information.

Trick or TreatWith Halloween rapidly approaching, a word on Trick or Treating. If you are participating in the festivities and are receiving Trick or Treaters to your home, leave your entrance lights on. It not only will alert Trick or Treaters that you are participating, it will also light the way for many youngsters who may be wearing costumes and masks that already make it hard for them to see. Motorists, please pay extra attention and drive slowly. Children preoccupied with getting to the next house, their peripheral vision may be compromised by a mask, and are not paying attention to cars. Trick or Treat hours are 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

Veterans Day CeremonyA Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on November 12, 4:30 PM, at the flagpole installation in front of the Plantation House. The NJROTC unit from Hilton Head High School will help host this year’s event. (page 22)

Lagoon LevelsThis has been one or the rainiest summers in recent memory. These rain events have been great for our landscaping and water bills. The rain has also raised the water table and subsequently the water level in our lagoons. Although higher lagoon levels are considered by some to be picturesque, such water levels reduce a lagoon’s capacity to accept stormwater runoff during major storm events such as the one we experienced on Labor Day morning, September 7, when we received six inches of rain in a three hour period. If a severe rain event is predicted, we will lower the levels in our lagoons to provide more storage capacity for stormwater runoff. In the case of the Labor Day storm, no such forecast was depicted. We have now lowered lagoon levels to accommodate the higher water table and help move water through our system. In some cases, we will be experimenting with lower static lagoon levels to provide for additional capacity. Not too many years ago, many property owners were concerned with lagoon levels being too low which was due to drought and a

very low water table. Mother Nature seems to be quite fickle in this area. Although scenic, the first and primary function of all of our lakes and lagoons is stormwater management.

The ABC’s of the ARB(Architectural Review Board)

The Community Relations Department, which comprises the ARB and Covenants functions, will be featuring topics of interest to help inform residents, architects, and contractors about current events and ongoing departmental projects.

In the past year, the ARB has seen a surge in new owners wanting to alter an existing home site to make it “their home” by adapting the design to the Lowcountry lifestyle. For many, moving to a new area is nothing different, but moving into a “deed restricted gated community” can be a real eye opener if you are unfamiliar with the Plantation’s Covenants and/or other Governing Documents.

I started my tenure with the POA in April 2001 in the Community Relations Department and gradually moved to the position of ARB Administrator in 2013. I look forward to working with all property owners, architects, and contractors to address questions and offer solutions which may help in your remodeling and/or Do-It-Yourself projects. Along with Michele Chisholm, Community Relations Specialist, I am here to assist you with your exterior home improvement projects.

With many new homeowners, our neighborhoods are gradually going through a renaissance to reflect fresh ideas in home designs, softer exterior colors, and creative landscape design that contains hardscape features. It is exciting to see how new property owners, along with many veteran property owners, are transforming a vintage property that needs updating into a design and structure that reflects our Lowcountry architecture. Remember to contact the ARB Department when you are considering a change to the exterior design of your home, removing and/or adding landscape material, or replacing windows/decks and patios. It’s best to be informed with procedures and the correct information to accomplish your goal. Our ARB Guidelines can be found on the POA Website: www.hiltonheadplantation.com under the Architectural Standards tab, and also under the Documents tab.

Our ARB articles will cover procedures on building, adding additions, landscaping, painting, tree removal, and many others, including the necessary permits needed for approval. Our main focus is property setbacks and aesthetics. We look forward to working with you on your upcoming exterior home improvement projects.

The rain fall we have experienced has been almost inimical. The sheets of water and winds have kept me grounded from my duties on more than a few occasions. You have no idea what all that water and wind does to my nest! Now with cooler weather I am inspired and invigorated to clean up a little. One of the great things about HHP, which is akin to a gaggle of herons, is your spirit of community

and self-help. Organizing a neighborhood cleanup is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors and noticeably improve and beautify your neighborhood at the same time.

Why not dedicate a cool October Saturday to cleaning and/or painting mailboxes? Pick up your FREE paint at the POA Service Center (bring an empty jar with a tight lid); gather your paintbrushes, quills, ink wells, buckets, and cleaning brushes, and divide the task. Afterwards you can decorate your mailbox for those “pesky” (not really, they’re sweet) Trick or Treaters on Halloween night.

The POA provides FREE brown paint for mailboxes. Two (2) types of paint are provided for mailbox restoration: a water-based paint is used for the post and newspaper slot while an oil-based paint is used for the mailbox. Depending on how discolored or faded your post and mailbox are, you may need two containers (empty jars) with tight lids, one for each type of paint.

During my flyovers, I have observed and even reported some “nasty” mailbox conditions within the Plantation. Quite often, residents become offended after receiving notification to clean or paint their mailbox. Mailboxes have a huge impact on our streetscape. They can provide a favorable image…or they can depict an unkempt and neglected ambiance. Often we do not recognize the deterioration and fading paint because it occurs so gradually over time. In this case, a foolish consistency is not the hobgoblin of a little mind! My brain, mind you, is little but fosters great heron wisdom nevertheless. No “bird brain” jokes please…or you will force me to start regurgitating the complete works of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Just a 50/50 solution of bleach and water, and a quick wash and rinse will eliminate that pesky mold that has grown due to all of our wet weather. I must admit, some of my inconsiderate avian cousins are responsible for some of the “soil” on the top of your mailbox! I

have had a conversation with my brethren about these horrible indiscretions!

Your support post must be maintained in a vertical position and there must be no visible rotting wood on the support post or on the box reserved for the newspapers, located directly below the mailbox.

Nameplates are not required (mine boldly states “Harry Heron”). However, if used, the lettering for the nameplate is standardized against a brown background, must be reflective (for night viewing), and must be a minimum of one inch (1”) in height. Letters and numbers are available at the POA Service Center for a small fee.

By the way, the Town of Hilton Head has an ordinance that sets requirements for the display of house numbers. A house number must be posted on your property within 20 feet of the edge of the street or roadway. A number may be posted on a mailbox if it is located on your property. While a house number may take a back burner to certain issues, it is important to know the safety issues involved when trying to locate a residence, especially a life or death situation (EMS and/or Security can’t find you!). My heron insights, quill pen, and 2-2-2 navigation are always looking out for you!

PS: Please see info. on page 9 about the Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) to be held on Monday, December 14. I hope they count me!

Holiday Lighting Contest/ Driving TourAs an encouragement for lighting up our holidays, the POA conducts the Holiday Lighting Contest/Driving Tour. The rules for the contest are fairly simple and include some do’s & don’ts.

(1) Outdoor holiday decorations should be ready for viewing by Monday, December 7, 2015.

(2) A voting ballot will be included in the November Plantation Living.

(3) View decorations from the street only. This is not an invitation to "tromp" the lawns of others.

(4) Make your selection and return your voting ballot for house and/or mailbox decorations no later than Thursday, December 17, 2015 to the POA Service Center or the Plantation House.

(5) If there is a particular street that is interested in being represented in the Holiday Tour, please call the POA at 681-8800, ext. 242.

(6) You will be able to pick up a list of homes on the Holiday Tour by Monday, December 21, 2015 at the POA Service Center. The list will also be posted on the Website.

And yes, there are POA guidelines for outdoor decorations: (1) White lights are preferred for outdoor decorations; (2) No blinking lights; (3) If floodlights are used, point them towards your home; (4) Turn off music by 10:00 PM and outdoor lights by Midnight; (5) All exterior holiday decorations are to be put away by Tuesday, January 19, 2016.

MAILBOX DECORATIONS! If you would like, please decorate your mailboxes. These will be fun to view in the daytime, and will also be part of the contest.

Although Plantation residents use their criteria for judging the winners, the POA encourages tasteful, attractive, and charming

decorations. The key is… All things in moderation.

The winners will be announced in the January issue of Plantation Living and on the Website.

Call For POA Board CandidatesWhy should you consider serving?Hilton Head Plantation is a wonderful community. It is larger than many small towns, but we face many of the same problems as a small town. Our “Town Council” is the Board of Directors. They oversee every major decision that affects each of us as residents in this very special place. The Board needs levelheaded property owners, hopefully with policy-making experience, to perform the duties listed below. It’s a wonderful way to serve your community and to work with your fellow residents to keep HHP a great place. An application for Board candidacy is inserted in this issue.

The Role of the Board is:• Financial oversight• Strategic direction• Governance• Direction to General Manager

The Board of Directors is composed of nine members. In March 2016, the terms of three members will expire. Of those selected for nomination, three will be elected to three-year terms.

The POA Board meets once a month and each Board member chairs at least one committee. Our committees act in an advisory capacity and provide assistance, recommendations, and information to the Board. Previous experience on one of the POA’s committees is highly recommended, but not required for candidacy.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

For more details, please contact any of the members of the Nominating Committee below or contact the POA Service Center.

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 AM. Remember to "fall back" — set your clocks back one hour before bedtime Saturday night.

Fishing Club

The October meeting of the Fishing Club will take place at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, October 28, at the Plantation House. Dinner theme is German, and our speaker will be Helen Xenakis: “The Timeline of Hilton Head Island”. The club provides dinner and dessert plates; you bring your own utensils and drinking cups.

We had a successful year financially last year, helped by our Kids Kamp worm supplier providing the club with the awards we gave to the boy and girl who caught the largest fish. The board has planned to use some of these funds to support organizations connected with education, ecology, and marine activities in the Lowcountry. We plan to make donations to the Waddell Mariculture Center, and the Port Royal Sound Foundation Maritime Center. Also, we’ll donate funds to the new HHP swimming pool to provide a sign at the new fishing pier. The sign will be similar to the one at the Spring Lake weir, which describes the fish present in the lake as well as listing SC fishing regulations. While HHP provides the club with funds to stock fish in the freshwater lagoons, we are also considering using some club funds to stock some striped bass in our saltwater lakes. This is consistent with the club’s Mission Statement to provide service, education, and activities to the community as well as to our own membership.

We’ve also decided to pay the POA to clean up our venues after our special events, the Lowcountry Boil and our Christmas party. Membership will continue to clean up after our regular dinner meetings.

The Island Sport Fishing Club reported that five great white sharks were spotted in Port Royal Sound and that a bull shark was seen eight miles upstream in the Savannah River! If you want the full story on sharks in Port Royal Sound, check out the new shark exhibit at the Port Royal Sound Maritime Center at Lemon Island (Route 170 on the way to Beaufort).

Another great event will be taking place on November 8 at the Waddell Mariculture Center ‒ the annual “Taste of Waddell”. This fundraiser includes a catered dinner. The Center provides a great service to all fishermen in the Lowcountry. A significant percentage of the redfish and cobia caught in SC coastal water comes from fish that are bred in captivity by Waddell and released along the entire coast.

Lowcountry Nature/HHP Clubs October 2015 - Page 9

Plantation Living, a Newsletter for Residents of Hilton Head Plantation

Lowcountry Nature: Groundsel BushGroundsel bush (Baccharis halimifolia) grows almost everywhere in the Lowcountry – salt marshes, fields, roadsides, drainage ditches, even patches of waste ground seemingly inhospitable to any plant life at all.

Most of the year, you may not even notice this nondescript shrub. But in autumn, when it’s blanketed with white flowers, groundsel bush seems to pop out of the landscape, providing masses of blooms during a time when most other plants have ceased flowering. Also called saltbush or sea myrtle, groundsel bush withstands saline soils and sea spray and thrives in coastal wetlands. It often colonizes areas disturbed by fire, floods, or human activities. Although it can be weedy and invasive, groundsel bush is sometimes used as a landscape plant because of its striking appearance in the fall. In South Carolina, flowering occurs from August to November, with male and female flowers borne on separate plants. Female shrubs take on a showy, cottony appearance due to masses of white bristles attached to the numerous tiny fruits, each containing a single seed. The bristles act like miniature parachutes, helping the seeds travel in the wind. Seeds also spread via water, vehicles, and even gravel used in road construction. A single bush can produce a million or more seeds. Groundsel bush is in the same plant family as daisies, asters, sunflowers, and a small wildflower called groundsel (for which it’s named). It is native to the United States and widely distributed along the East Coast. Aside from providing shelter and nest sites for wildlife, it’s an important nectar source for migrating Monarch butterflies passing through the Lowcountry on their way to southern Florida and Mexico.

WHAT: The Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC)

WHEN: Monday, December 14 ― rain or shine! Time determined by each field group; home birders pick their own 30 minute time period.

WHO: Birders of ALL abilities! We need you even if you are not an expert birder. Some help by serving as a photographer for a small group of birders, while others help by recording the group’s data on a tally sheet. Home birders simply agree to spend a minimum of 30 minutes watching and recording the birds in their yard and feeder. You can even do this from your window!

WHERE: Field birders are assigned to a small group in the Plantation while home birders simply watch their own yard.

WHY: This is a fun, easy, educational, citizen science project that provides scientists with data needed to track population trends, range changes, and numbers of birds.

Interested in joining over 65 of your HHP neighbors who participated in last year’s count? For more information or to sign up, please call Carol Clemens at 689-2903 or email Carol at [email protected].

Thanks and happy birding!

Country Club of Hilton Head

Tennis players and golfers from the Country Club of Hilton Head and the Golf Club at Indigo Run joined over 14,000 other participants from more than 125 ClubCorp golf clubs, country clubs, and dining clubs across the country in the annual ClubCorp Charity Classic. In 2014, the Charity Classic raised over $2.5 million and the annual event has now raised more than $14.5 million since its inception in 2007. Beneficiaries of the Charity Classic are Augie’s Quest, seeking treatment and cures for ALS; the Employee Partners Care Foundation, established to help Employee Partners of ClubCorp’s family of Clubs in need of financial assistance in times of crisis; and a local charity selected by each individual club.

The 2015 Hilton Head event featured a tennis clinic and tennis pro exhibition and a four person scramble golf tournament at the Golf Club at Indigo Run. Following the athletic events, participants enjoyed an evening cocktail party and silent auction, with over $9,000 raised for charity. The local beneficiary for 2015 was the Boys & Girls Club of the Lowcountry.

The CCHH’s August Twilight Mixer was a “mixed affair” with half the field rained out on their last three holes while the other groups saw no rain during the event. Rain or shine, all participants enjoyed the cocktail hour and dinner following competition.

Caregivers Support GroupOur support group for caregivers in Hilton Head Plantation is growing! What a wonderful group of people who care about helping others. That’s what a mutual self-help group is all about. You get some time out from your caregiving (respite) to touch base with others, have a laugh, a cry, attend to your needs (feelings, spirit, thoughts, and fears), and you reach out and help another with your experiences. It’s always a value to your personal health and wellness, as well as your loved one’s care.

You will learn from a professional facilitator and counselor, Ann Martel, M.S.W., LISW (HHP resident). Ann has over 30 years’ experience in Healthcare, Mental Health Care, Senior/Hospice Care, and private counseling for adjustments related to illness, major transitions in life, stress, grief, and caregiving.

The Avid Gardeners (TAG)Morning and evening cooler temperatures, and a freshness in the air has encouraged taking care of outside projects postponed due to the heat. Fall is definitely a time to get outside and enjoy our beautiful surroundings.

Have you noticed the 3-Point Reflective Garden at the “Y” intersection of Seabrook and Dolphin Head Drives? This is TAG’s Patti Peacock’s “baby”. She has spent many hours developing the garden with donated plants, and the positive comments from passersby continue to encourage Patti in this major project.

As a Federated Garden Club in the state of SC, a goal of The Avid Gardeners is to extend the beauty and appreciation of nature and gardening to the community. TAG (under the direction of Sarah Jebo) will assist Volunteers in Medicine in the replanting and maintenance of a series of small gardens at their entrance on Palmetto Parkway. With the more pleasant weather, daily attendees at Memory Matters are again enjoying their patio garden and raised flowerbeds developed by TAG, as are visitors to Plant It Pink at the HHI Hospital, and the General Davis Island on HHP – all “community projects” developed and directed by The Avid Gardeners.

In preparation for TAG’s popular Flower Show in April, 2016, time at each meeting this year will be devoted to its development and progress. Suzy Baldwin, Chairperson for the Show, is joined by her committee of Sharon Jaunsem, MaryAnn Snyder, Eileen Creek, Caroline Alderman, and Sarah Jebo. They’ve again devised another original, creative exhibit. TAG is proud and fortunate to have such talent within our membership. In addition to drawing on the experience and expertise of our members, Ann Clayton, Program Chair, has also scheduled very interesting speakers. At our October meeting, five of our talented members will demonstrate the art of table arrangements with advice on how to win a blue ribbon at the Flower Show.

Join us at our monthly meetings held on the third Friday of each month in the Spring Lake Pavilion at 9:30 AM for a coffee/social, meeting at 10:00 AM, and the program of the month. Contact Corliss Zampino, Membership Chairperson, at 681-6062 for further information.

Farmers ClubOctober is surely the finest month of the year here. Vegetables growing, flowers still blooming, and beautiful weather to enjoy all of it. Now is a good time to stroll around the farm and see

what others are growing. We have made some very special friends doing this and also in volunteering for various jobs in this fine organization. Gardeners love to give advice, so don’t be shy about asking questions.

When planting lettuce seeds, you will need to just barely cover them with soil and give them a fine mist of water twice a day until they sprout. Lettuce and spinach both need sufficient fertilizer to grow properly as do all of the vegetables here because our soil has been depleted long ago. My favorite, Red Sails, is not only pretty but also has more nutrition in it. Remember to compost all of your kitchen scraps including coffee grounds, tea bags, and shredded paper. Google “composting” for excellent advice. If you don’t have a composter, simply dig it into your plot between rows or make a pile covered with soil to keep the odor away.

Go ahead and prepare a couple of rows for the Vidalia onions we all like to grow. They are incredibly easy and delicious. Prepare a furrow into which you put some 10-10-10 and cover this with soil. This will give the little seedlings that arrive in late November a good start without burning them. We plant ours about two inches apart – thinning them to eat as scallions as soon as they are big enough. This saves space for the 300 that we order, and gives us plenty to share. We store the mature onions in the garage fridge in the vegetable drawers, and we have them until November to make great soups. Some people like to chop and freeze them.

Interested in joining us? The cost of a 25 by 25 foot plot is $30 plus a membership fee of $20, which entitles you to nine wonderful dinners at the Plantation House on first Thursdays. Please call Chuck Mainenti for a tour at 843-682-3475.

NEW HHP Kayak ClubThere’s still time to join the HHP Kayak Club! October is a wonderful month for kayaking on the waters in and around the Plantation. With average daytime temperatures still in the mid-70s there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy. The HHP Kayak Club invites you to join us as we kayak around Hilton Head Island! For some club outings, you must own your own kayak, but for others you can rent one.

As of September, we have 77+ HHP owner/resident households comprising 100+ total members. But, there’s still room for you! Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 6:30 PM, at the Plantation House. Please consider joining us!

The Kayak Club is for HHP owner/residents and their families. We launch/retrieve kayaks at multiple locations on the Island for weekly and monthly day-trips. We welcome members of all ages and skill levels including those who already own a kayak, as well as those who are considering their first kayak purchase. We’re also looking for a few more experienced kayakers who would volunteer to be “kayak guides” for some of our upcoming outings.

Tee TimersEither Oyster Reef, Dolphin Head, or Bear Creek Golf Clubs have graciously given the Tee Timers 16 slots to fill each week. We had several new members sign up at the Ice Cream Social last month and with the weather hopefully cooling off, we are looking forward to our gals regularly coming out to play so we can fill all those slots. We try to have lunch together before golf at the courses’ facilities if possible and have had some great food at the new LagerHead Tavern at Oyster Reef recently.

If you would be interested in joining our fun group on Wednesday afternoons to play 9 or 18 holes, the Tee Timers are taking names. Please email our Chair Carole Ide at [email protected] or Kathy Enders, Co-chair, at [email protected]. Members of the Tee Timers don’t need handicaps (we just get together for some fun golf and friendly times), but you must be a member of the HHP Women’s Club, so make sure you join that group first.

Nine more days until our Sale! I don’t think we’ve ever had such a fabulous assortment of beautiful and unique

handmade items. In fact, we had a new member join us in the spring and shortly thereafter left for her other home in Germany. She returned in mid-September and brought along with her several outfits for the American Girl Doll and lots of other lovely items. Thank you, Eva. Another unexpected gift windfall came from Vicki Hillary’s sister who makes beautiful fused glass pieces. We have only six ‒ three are plates and three are small wall pieces, and six small pieces of fused glass for necklaces.

AND WE’RE HAVING TWO RAFFLES: One, thanks to Nancy Kennedy! This is a dollhouse to end all dollhouses. It’s beautifully designed, and furnished right down to the shower cap in one of the bathtubs! The other is a Tailgate Raffle with lots of good food and other items.

Things are never dull in our part of the world. Audrey Frey has made many beautiful items over the years and this year has done several interesting ones, including four snack tables. Susie Marquis came to us as a new member a few years ago and was just learning to knit. She has amazed all of us with her speed and ability. She started out knitting “Big Al” scarves (and continues to have a demand for them), but she has branched out to make lovely knitted wraps, capes, and other things as well.

Again among the hundreds of lovely handmade, reasonably priced items you will find a great selection of jewelry, children’s clothes and toys, scarves of every style and size, handmade cards for every occasion, and lots of other new and exciting items. This is a wonderful time to do your Christmas shopping. AND, don’t forget our bake sale! Come early because we frequently sell out!

Thanks again for your support which, as of the end of last year, enabled us to donate $203,000 to our Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.

Yacht ClubAs we went to press, HHPYC was looking forward to its September meeting, which featured Tonya Hudson speaking about the history of shrimping on Hilton Head

Island as well as a sampling of shrimp appetizers from the chef at Hudson’s Seafood Restaurant. We were also looking forward to the Beaufort Shrimp Festival, which was scheduled for the first weekend in October. I hope no weather or other crazy thing happened to derail either of these great activities!

Upcoming Yacht Club events include the October 15 meeting (a Lowcountry Boil and a presentation on LNG shipping) and the Charleston trip. The Charleston trip, October 18-24, will feature a dock party at the Charleston Resort & Marina on the 20th and a dinner at the Fish House, Charleston Harbor on the 21st. This event is open to all members, whether traveling by boat or car. Details have been provided via email.

On November 19, the club will celebrate the last monthly meeting of 2015 with an Italian party and enjoy a photographic “Year in Review” presentation. Bella Italia will cater the event.

Mark your calendars for the highlight of the season: the Yacht Club Change of Watch Ball, featuring the Headliners Band, will be held on Tuesday, December 8 at the Country Club of Hilton Head.

Members of the power fleet enjoyed a boat trip north together in September. (Pictured above, L-R: Bill Ennis, Ethlyn and Mike Finnerty, Jim and Linda Ackerman, Jan Young, and Rick and Diane Sauers.)

HHP property owners whose boats are registered in SC are encouraged to join our fun-loving association of boaters. Social Membership is available to HHP property owners with boating experience, although there is a short waiting list. HHP Big BandWe’re now into our new 2015-2016 season and things are rolling along very well. The increased exposure that the Band has been receiving this past year and the expansion of our repertoire has generated a lot of interest in the group. As a result, we’re finding very early on that our bookings are coming along very well.

A lot is happening but, as always, if you’re interested in seeing if playing with the Big Band is right for you, please contact us or stop in on a Monday night at the Plantation House from 7:00-9:00 PM when we are practicing and introduce yourself.

The Hilton Head Plantation Big Band, a group of more than 20 musicians who volunteer their time to perform at local venues, donates every year to promote music among the youth of Hilton Head Island through their “Gift of Music” program. Past contributions included musical equipment for Hilton Head elementary schools, the Boys and Girls Club, and the HHP Kids Kamp. This year, in honor of Bob Masteller and the work he did to support youth music programs, the HHP Big Band donated money for two student scholarships to Bob Masteller’s Junior Jazz Foundation’s Summer Music Camp.

A presentation took place on August 24 at The Jazz Corner. Making the presentation to Lois Masteller, widow of Bob Masteller, for the HHP Big Band were keyboardist Ellie Perry, drummer Mike Feinman, and clarinetist Barbara Smith. Lois Masteller said she was very grateful for the support of groups like the HHP Big Band that share Bob’s vision of jazz preservation and education.

For additional information, please email:[email protected].

Newcomers ClubThe Newcomers Club began the season with a “Meet & Greet/POA” event in September with over 20 new members joining our club. We received information from many of the HHP Clubs who also signed up new members. POA General Manager Peter Kristian gave an informative talk on our plantation and handed out numerous door prizes. A good time was had by all.

Coming up on October 20 at the Plantation House is our Tailgate Party (inside of course). We’ll have Beer Tasting from Hilton Head Brewery, and dinner from Street Meet (brats and fixings). We’d like everyone to wear their team colors and plan to decorate your tables with your team memorabilia. George Stubbs will be giving us a short presentation on the Arkhaios Cultural Film Festival, a free event at Coligny Theater October 22-24. Premier Roofing will be our sponsor.

Our November 17 event will be Wine Tasting and Tidbits. The wines featured will be available to order for the holiday season. Please consider bringing an unwrapped toy for a child between the ages of 1-12 years old. This is a Deep Well project that last year helped 852 children have a Merry Christmas. Watch for the email blast for specific details and RSVP for this fun event. We kick off Christmas shopping with Jingle Fest on December 3 on Main Street.

The Newcomers Club is open to all HHP residents. It’s not too late to sign up to become a member, only $10/person, $20/couple. Visit www.hhpnc.com or contact Suzi Huisman membership chair at: membership@ hhpnc.com. You can also contact our president Mary Wilcox at 843-715-2769.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our next event.

Dog ClubHello Dog Lovers! The HHP Dog Club is offering another Microchipping Event on Saturday, November 14, 10:00 AM, at the Plantation House. Having your dog microchipped is essential. A dog collar and ID can come off, but the microchip is a permanent identification which is painlessly injected

with a hypodermic into the dog’s shoulder. If your dog gets lost anywhere in the world, a shelter or veterinarian can use a handheld scanner to locate the chip, then make a phone call to a central agency to find the owner’s contact information. In fact, the Dog Club gave HHP Security a scanner that they use on dogs found wandering on HHP. If you travel anywhere with your dog in the car, remember that he/she is likely to run away in fear if the car is in an accident. A microchip

will likely ensure that you and your beloved canine are soon reunited.

Interested? Don’t delay! Make your request ASAP with a check for $20 per dog ($15 for club members), made payable to HHP Dog Club. Include a note listing your: name and address, phone number, email address, and the dog’s (or dogs’) name(s) and breed(s).

Mail the check and information to: Helen Collins, 3 Highbush Drive, HHI, SC 29926. Only a limited number of appointments are possible, so you must mail your check and information, as we will assign times on a first-come, first-served basis, based on the postmark. Your cancelled check is your receipt. You will be contacted a week before the event with your appointment time.

We are able to offer microchipping at such a reduced fee because Hilton Head Humane Association is giving us the chips at cost, and vet techs are volunteering to inject the chips into the dogs. Our two previous microchipping events were very popular, so we are confident that the appointments will fill quickly. Don’t be left out! Mail your check and information today!

Meanwhile, Happy Dog Walking,

HHP Softball ClubOver the last few months, the HHP Softball Club has been on an incredible run of success on the

field, winning the vast majority of our games against competitive teams from Sun City and the Landings. The team has really come together in all aspects of the game,

from hitting to pitching to defense and base running. Everyone on the team is working hard and contributing to our success. We are practicing every Tuesday at 1:00 PM at the softball field near the POA Service Center. We work on the fundamentals of hitting and fielding and prepare ourselves for upcoming game activity. We’re continuing to grow our roster, but still can use more players...male or female. Annual fee to participate is $20, which covers all of our expenses for equipment, etc.

If you are interested in joining the club or have any questions, feel free to contact Bob Huisman at [email protected]. Or, just come by one of our practices. Softball is FUN!

Next up is our annual Octoberfest event scheduled for Friday, October 23 at the Spring Lake Racquet Club. Highlights include mixed doubles at 4:00 PM followed by brats grilled to perfection, scrumptious sides, and delicious desserts on the Pro Shop patio at 6:00 PM. Look for further details on the sign up sheet at the Pro Shop. Sign up to play or watch, then join the party. As always, it’s BYOB. Lederhosen (those German leather short pants) are optional. Wear them if you have them!

Finally (drum roll), mark your calendar for November 17, when we will honor Keith Ferda for 35 years of service as our Director of Tennis with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres (thank God for spell check) at the Spring Lake Pavilion from 5:30-7:00 PM. Book Description: Coy Bronson is a talented man who left the mountains of North Carolina to follow his dream to California. He leans on his mother’s encouragement and develops a successful career as an actor, director, producer, and writer. Working with some of the best actors of his time ‒ Charlton Heston, Rock Hudson, Liz Taylor, and Ethel Waters ‒ Coy is shocked to learn that his friend, James Dean, has been killed in a car accident. At the funeral, Coy sees a beautiful guest, Norma Jeane. She’ll be accused of stealing scripts from Liz Taylor, and Coy will partner with Hudson to uncover the real perpetrator. In this compelling novel, a Hollywood director reveals a glimpse into a special relationship with his “Mama” and his experiences with movie icons as they face a tragedy together.

About the Author: Elizabeth Harris (a.k.a. Carolyn Havelka) grew up in Burnsville near Asheville, North Carolina. She began writing at the young age of thirteen. She was influenced and encouraged by her high school classmates to follow her dream of writing, but never became serious until the last few years.
