WHY BLYTH?We are the most trusted educational organization offering study-abroad programs for students from the US and Canada. More than 50,000 students have experienced our International Summer and Community Service programs since we opened in 1977.

Our alumni include men and women from every field of endeavour: entrepreneurs, artists, homemakers, politicians, journalists, as well as business, government and social sector leaders. Today, we are entrusted to educate their children and many more first-generation Blyth graduates. All of them share a learned curiosity about the world at large that serves them well in an age when diversity and a global outlook count more than ever.

OUR MANDATE IS OUR DIFFERENCEWe provide an exceptional study-abroad experience, delivered in small classes by skilled and personable faculty, in the most remarkable locations around the world. We do this by offering a structured and empathetic environment where young women and men can thrive personally and academically in storied places that offer boundless opportunities for the eager and curious.

WE LEAD STUDENTS OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AND INTO THE WORLDOur staff are selected from among thousands of applicants for their expertise, teaching abilities and empathy. They are committed to experiential education in a way that brings learning to life and opens our students minds and hearts to the richness of other cultures. Whats more, their commitment to personalized education enables them to match each students learning style to the curriculum and their own expectations.

A SUMMER IN ROME IS MORE THAN A CLASSROOM IN ROME. MUCH MOREMuch of our students personal growth comes outside the formal curriculum and on the field trips, excursions and out and about activities that play such a vital role in learning about other people and their cultures.

SAFETY AND SECURITY IN NUMBERSBlyths on-site teams of teachers, program managers and activity coordinators are responsible for the safety and security of the students in their locale. In fact, they share no higher priority.

This is one reason Blyth has a very high staff-to-student ratio: we are able to provide all our students with the support they need while away from homeand give their parents the peace of mind they deserve.

We also limit the number of students in all our programs. They typically average 11 per class. This ensures we can provide each student with the structure and care they need, academically and otherwise.

IF YOU THINK EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE, TRY IGNORANCEMark Twain said that, and we couldnt agree more. This is why we offer a generous financial aid program to students and families who have a real financial need, and why we enable all families to reduce their costs by paying with points via Aeroplan or other air mileage programs.

HELPING OTHERS IS A LEARNED SKILL. WELL TEACH YOU HOWWe help teach it. Our community service programs are both authentic and transformational so they can ignite a life of service to others. Our 10-to-14-day programs offered through meaningful, locally driven community initiatives teach the kind of lessons that create true global citizens.

THE WORLD IS DIVERSE. ENJOY ITWe teach our students to value many things: from independence, team-building and self-discipline to social aptitude, leadership and curiosity.

But most of all, they learn not just to cope with differences, or even to just tolerate them, but to thrive on them.

This is why our students, all between the ages of 13 and 19, come from public schools and private schools across Canada, the United States and beyond. They bring a wonderful mix of ethnic, religious and social backgrounds to our programsand each other.

AN INVITATION TO CREATE THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIMEIf what weve said so far is appealing, please turn the page to discover the details. We also encourage you to visit our website: www.blythsummers.com. Please review some of our student and parent testimonials. They are our best ambassadors by far. Theyve been where we hope you and yours will go: to that very big place called The World. Thank you for coming this far with us.

Our most important responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of our students. Nothing is more important.

We aim to strike a balance between fostering independence and making good choices. That said, with our small classes and average student-to-staff ratio of 7 to 1, we can ensure there is always an experienced and empathetic adult on hand so that every student is well cared for.

DIRECT STAFF SUPERVISIONOur teachers, support staff and program managers are always nearby. They stay in the same hotels and residences and provide plenty of structured, supervised group activities that students can join during their free time.

DAYTIME SAFETY AND SUPERVISIONWhen our Grade 11 and 12 students arent in class or volunteering, they can use their free time to participate in one of our organized activities, visit local sites, study, have lunch in restaurants or cafes, or shop.

Blyth students are required to travel in groups of four or more at all times.

Our Grade 9 and 10 programs are fully supervised and students are accompanied by Blyth staff at all times.

NIGHTTIME SAFETY AND SUPERVISIONAfter dinner, students can use their free time to participate in one of our organized activities, visit local sites, study, or stay in their room. If they decide to leave the hotel, students must sign out in groups of four or more. They must state where they are going and the names of the students in their group. The entire group must then sign back in together before the curfew.

Since Grade 9 and 10 programs are fully supervised, all students are accompanied by staff at all times. Therefore, curfew and sign-in procedures are not necessary, as staff can personally ensure students have returned to their rooms.

CURFEWGrade 9 and 10Curfew is set at 10 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Grade 9 and 10 students do not receive sign-out privileges.

Grade 11 & 12 and Community Service ProgramsCurfew is set at 11 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday and 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Program staff ensure that sign-in and sign-out procedures are carefully explained and adhered to. Overnight stays away from the program are not permitted. There are no exceptions. Students who return past curfew will be grounded.

ALCOHOL AND DRUGSWe have a zero-tolerance policy towards student alcohol and drug use.

Expulsion from the program is not common, but it does happen. Blyth Academy and Blyth Educational Travel reserve the right to dismiss any student for alcohol and/or drug use or for continued disobedience of the rules, and to send the offending student home from the program at their own, or their parents, expense.

CONTACTING STAFFIf parents have any concern or need to reach their child while they are on the program, please contact [email protected]. Student services closely monitors students while they are abroad.

We also have a 24-hour phone line in case of emergency.

    Safety and Supervision are paramount

THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCEClasses are held on-site at various museums, landmarks, parks or even on boats. Sometimes, in order to take advantage of Internet access, classes are held in hotel conference rooms.

The average class size is 11 students and the maximum is 20. It makes every class a conversation rather than a lecture, and every seat a frontrow seat. Our small class size allows our teachers to accommodate Individual Education Plans as well as provide one-on-one help and review sessions.

For Grade 9 and 10 programs, full-day classes are generally held Monday to Friday with a break for lunch. For Grade 11 and 12, classes are generally held Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a break in the middle. An afternoon class is held as well on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

READINGS, HOMEWORK, ASSIGNMENTS AND STUDY TIMEWe give students enough free time to complete their assignments. Grade 9 and 10 students have more class time to complete work, and have supervised free time during the evenings and weekends for their assignments. For Grade 11 and 12 students, free time is generally Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, every evening after dinner and all day Saturday and Sunday.

EXPECTATIONSWe require you to complete all your pre-departure work, attend all classes and complete all assignments. This includes a final exam and/or a culminating task.

REPORT CARDSOnce you have successfully completed your course, we will send a report card to your home as well as to your home school.

No country has a landscape like Icelands: its an island from another planet, with erupting volcanoes, thermal geysers, majestic glaciers and barren moonscapesall in stark contrast to the hip and sophisticated capital city of Reykjavik.

Our program in this unique land starts in that same city, the centre of Icelands ancient culture and the 1000-year-old seat of its government.

We then head east on the famed Golden Circle Route to enjoy three of Icelands iconic sites: Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss Waterfall, and the geothermally active valley around the Geysir Geyser. In fact, the Strokkus Geyser nearby continues to erupt every five to 10 minutes.

Veering south to the spectacular Westman Islands

(Vestmannaeyjar), we make our first foray into the eerie world of volcanoes, hiking to some of the most famous ones and exploring their lava fields. This will get to be a daily habit over the next week as we probe a series of deep glaciers, steep fjords, jagged coastlines, hot lava fields and vast canyons.

Our explorations will take us through some of the remotest parts of the country. We will dip into thermal baths, watch for whales and exotic birds offshore (plus wild Icelandic ponies onshore), and even take in the oddly lush Botanical Gardens of Akureyri, the capital of northern Iceland.

We travel by bus each day, then hike and explore one of the world's most mysterious landscapes, and stay in charming guesthouses and small hotels. Along the way, we'll get to know not just the landscape of Iceland, but learn first-hand about the peoplefrom the peopleand their extraordinary culture.

Our program ends back in Reykjavik with a farewell dinner in one of the citys famed gourmet restaurants.

Then we head to Munich, Germany, visiting Marienplatz Square and its famed Glockenspiel, enjoying a traditional Bavarian specialty market and taking in the citys beautiful parks and gardens.

Next we head to the beautiful mountain village of Zermatt, Switzerland where well hike in the shadow of the most chiseled peak in the Alps, the Matterhorn, soaring nearly

4500 metres into the sky. From one old town to another, we cross the border into the fabled Lake District of Italy where well enjoy a stately boat cruise and swim in the cool lake waters with the snow-capped Alps as a backdrop. We return in time to Florence, the home of the Renaissance. Here, well visit the shops on Ponte Vecchio, stroll the banks of the Arno River, and gaze up at Michelangelos David at the Accademia Gallery. We then head south to Tuscany and its stunning medieval city of Siena, complete with one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in all of Europe, the Duomo. The final stop on our Central European odyssey is Rome where well immerse ourselves in the glory of the Roman Empire and ponder its impact on our lives today. Well visit all the major sites, including the Roman Colosseum and the Forum, hike one of Romes historic hills to get a panoramic view of one of historys most storied cities and, of course, enjoy espresso and gelato in local cafes. Before our final exam and our trip home, well indulge in a final banquet of Italian cuisine.

Eight of Western Europes great anchors of history, culture, cuisine and learning are all ours to explore on the Grand Tour that features both great learning and great fun.

We start in London, called the capital of the world by many, where so much of our past collides with our future. Here, well explore the iconic sites and give ourselves time to delve into the city that Samuel Johnson declared we should never tire of.

From there, we land in Amsterdam, the city with more canals than Venice. Most are over 400 years old and all of them make up one of the worlds most popular UNESCO Heritage Sites. Well play chess at the Max Euweplein, find treasures in the flea market, learn about diamonds on a special tour and, of course, visit the Anne Frank House, a profound reminder of the Second World War which devastated so much of Europe.

In sophisticated Paris, the citys chic is all around us, set

against the beautiful architecture of its churches, monuments, museums and grand avenues. Before leaving France, well spend days on the French Riviera taking in its great beaches and luxe culture and people.

Then west we go to the first of three cities in Spain:

Our first stop is Barcelona where we will see and feel the creativity and energy on its most famous avenue, La Rambia, with the Picasso Museum and the wild architecture of Antoni Gaudi. Outside Barcelona, well soar above the landscape in a hotair balloon for a birdseye view of the modern architecture set against this historic place.

To Barcelonas south lies Valencia, with its fabulous mix of ancient and modern and some of the finest beaches on the Mediterranean. Then inland to Madrid, the capital of Spain, to take in its wondrous art museums, from the Prado, filled with treasures by Goya and Velazquez, to the Reina Sofa, a showcase of modern art, including Picassos Guernica.

Our last stop on the Grand Tour is Lisbon, where Portugals proud sea-faring past meets its revitalized waterfront, top restaurants and hopping nightlife.
