VNA & Hospice is 65 years old. If we were an individual, we would be eligible for Medicare and fortunately, Medicare is still around. I came to the Central Coast 8 years ago to streamline our operations, integrate our services, and expand our outreach to the community. I am pleased that we have accomplished this without changing the VNA & Hospice mission that was instituted in 1951. The mission is still “The Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice is dedicated to providing the highest quality health care to

residents of the Central Coast by meeting their individual needs in an ethical, effective, caring and fiscally responsible manner.” I underline the words “individual needs” because VNA is the preferred provider for your home health care and hospice services. We just completed our 65th anniversary serving over 700 home health and 150 hospice patients on a daily basis within Monterey/San Benito Counties as well as the southern portions of Santa Cruz/Santa Clara Counties. We service all major hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and patients in their residences 365 days a year. When we started in 1951, we wanted to help our neighbors. Today, we are still helping our neighbors. We do not engage in glitzy, big bonanza promotions; just hard work making sure that our clients receive the care and education they need to stay healthy preventing a return to the hospital. The VNA has instituted the only home palliative care program in our 5,000 square miles of service area. Our focus is on care. Our community outreach continues. We provide:

• Wellness at Work, a program that helps both the employer and the employee meet their health goals,

• Flu Ends with U where we assist the county and the general public through public flu clinics with professionals providing the immunizations

• Travel Immunizations that provide pre-travel consultations, appropriate region immunizations and is Yellow Fever Certified.

• School health assistance, school screenings, clinics, and tests to assist the schools to encourage healthy goals.

Where do we do all this work? We assist you wherever you are. We come to the comfort of your home, your business, and your school. Our job is to care for you during your time of need. VNA has experienced change, government regulatory modifications and bad economies more than once and we continue to strive to provide the best care for you, the individual client or patient. Therefore the next time someone says, “Who would you call?” answer, “My long time local neighbor, the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice”. We will strive to always be the preferred provider of your continuum of medical care and may we always adhere to the individual’s needs. Respectfully,

Steven A. JohnsonPresident & CEO

Love of Your Community Spoken Through a Planned Gift

Working as a fundraiser in this community, I am always amazed at the generosity of its individuals. So many of my neighbors and friends volunteer their time and their treasure into making sure Monterey and San Benito Counties are kind and gentle to its residents and their natural beauty is preserved. We are blessed to have so many involved and loving residents. This was especially true of Marion and John Robotti. I had known Marion and John most of my life and they were pillars of our local area. Compassion was their middle name. John was “always caring for his co-workers, those in need and the welfare of his friends and family”. John initiated my youngest son, John Del Piero (20 yrs. old) into the Monterey History & Art Association BBQ crew by throwing a ladle of cooked beans across his apron. The two John’s became close friends from that moment on. With a twinkle in his eye, John Robotti knew how to handle a young upstart. Marion was a very active volunteer in service and community affairs around the Monterey Peninsula during their 58 years here. Marion served on many boards and committees, (including the VNA & Hospice) logging thousands of hours of volunteerism. Marion had been quoted as saying “Our whole purpose in being here is doing for others.” When they both passed, they left their treasure to over five charities that they both loved from reading to medical care. They did it because they loved their community and all of us can remember to love our community as well by putting a little away to care for the future of our area and our community. I will always cherish their friendship and they will be missed by many, touched by those who will never meet them.

Without the financial support of our donors, the VNA would not be able to meet the needs of our residents nor provide the medical support our community demands. The staff, volunteers and the patient’s wish to extend their gratitude to each of you today for your love and support.

For 65 years, the dedicated caregivers of the CCVNA & Hospice have filled a void in the public health sector for the people of Monterey, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, making countless home visits and providing everything from physical therapy to Wellness programs and education.

In 1928, home nursing care was provided primarily by private nurses and attendants; in-home nursing in the public sector was nearly nonexistent. Yet by the early 1950s, a visiting nurse association had taken shape in Monterey County, staffed by one caregiver who made more than 1,200 house calls in a single year.

The association grew over the decades, and in 1969 it was joined by the Salinas Valley Visiting Nurse Association, which stretched into the rural districts of San Benito County. But the watershed event came in 1984, when the two organizations merged to become the CCVNA.

“Through the years, the CCVNA & Hospice has been proactive to the needs of the community,” says Tina Del Piero, CFRE, Director of Fund Development, now in her thirteenth year with the organization. One initiative was the formation of Central Coast Community Healthcare, Inc., a management umbrella company that “helps us provide more efficient, effective and fiscally responsible care to our patients,” adds Del Piero. In addition, services were expanded into Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, and hospice service began. But through it all, the mission never changed.

“We have some 230 home healthcare professionals making more than 70,000 home visits each year, in an area covering some 5,000 square miles,” says Del Piero.

As the association has grown, so too has the range of services they provide. Currently, CCVNA staffs speech and occupational therapists, diabetes and cardiac specialists, post-surgical rehabilitation professionals, home infusion therapists and dietary experts. And just as important, social workers on staff can help patients navigate the intricacies of the Medicaid system, at times a truly extraordinary feat.

The Hospice wing of the association is equally comprehensive, and the caregivers just as dedicated. End-of-life patients often require highly specialized services and, as such, the Hospice program provides nurses trained in end-of-life care, chaplains, bereavement and spiritual counselors, medication and pain management providers, and grief and loss support groups. In addition, CCVNA is impressively active in the community, hosting immunization and worksite wellness events and seminars, cholesterol and diabetes screening, health risk appraisals, public and corporate flu clinics, and school health services.

“The CCVNA is dedicated to providing the highest quality health care to residents of the Central Coast by meeting their individual needs as best as we possibly can,” adds Del Piero. “The close relationships we’ve built with caregivers and patients have made the association one big family.”

Dear Donors:

Thank you for your support over 65 years and that you and others, like you, will see the importance of this local organization and provide financial assistance through their gifts in the future. You are the driving force in us providing the service to the community. Thank you for your generosity and your support.

The VNA & Hospice would not have existed without you, the donor. You made the decisions of what to fund and encouraged us to push the envelope to provide programs that let people live a full life to that last moment. Without donations of time and treasure, the VNA would not have grown and become the largest home health organization in Monterey and San Benito Counties. You funded equipment for the nurses, equipment for the patients… all the way to funding direct care to those patients who needed assistance. You understood the difference between funding services and funding fundraising.

As I look back over the VNA’s 65 years and my mere 13 years with the organization, I am proud to be part of this community and part of the fundraising arm of the Central Coast VNA & Hospice and VNA Community Services. The organization has a long history of compassionate, individual medical care within the patient’s home, wherever they might call home. We have also reached out and tried to fill voids in the community for wellness issues. Many people only think of us as the community immunizer for flu while others see us as home hospice services. We are so much more but we are not what you call a warm and fuzzy, popular organization but truly a necessity in an age of medical uncertainty. We are in the thoughts of those who need our services.

VNA participated in one fundraising event this year and that was the Ferrari Parking from Gary’s Garage. I want to especially thank all those who donated to the VNA during this small event. You have been very kind to me personally and to the VNA & Hospice through your donations. It truly has been a pleasure to work with you.

Our local foundations have been very generous to the VNA over the years and provided significant support to programs and issues that affected your lives in this community. Local foundations are the backbone of providing support to the service organizations and, I am grateful to them for that continued support.

I truly believe that I have only been the facilitator of these gifts from you for the care of our patients. You have realized how important our organization is to the health of our community and your neighbors who seek out that care. Your loyal servant,

“Mick” Erikson is the VNA grief facilitator/counselor and hospice chaplain. He has been with VNA & Hospice for over 5 years and during this time, has helped many through their end of life journey and assists the family with support. His mother was under hospice care at the end of her life and he came to appreciate, at that time, how powerful and incredible hospice care was to help bring meaning and comfort to her and the family who loved her.

In Mick’s own words, this is how he describes himself and his job. “As a grief facilitator/counselor and hospice chaplain I have come to appreciate, more than ever before, how precious and fragile life can be for people going through a time of transition. I also now realize that, although not everyone is religious, each person is truly a spiritual creation. That's because “spirituality” can be described as “that which gives meaning to life”. It refers to the universal human need for love, hope, value, and dignity. I have discovered that many

“spiritual” issues patients want to talk about are what we would call life concerns. “How has my life had value?” “What has been important to me in my life?” “What do I have left to do before I die?” “What will happen to me when I die?” These are just a few examples of questions that we, as chaplains, assist our patients with as they make that final journey.

I would like to share a story about one man's spiritual awakening. He was a kind and gentle person who was not so sure about all of this “religious stuff”. He had attended church as a child, but now in his 90's, that had been a long time ago. After meeting with him a few months I remember asking him if he would like me to pray. He politely declined saying he was not sure about prayer and what it meant to him. Over the course of the next several months our conversation touched on a number of spiritual questions. It was amazing to see his journey unfold. Now, as I continue to visit him each week, toward the end of each visit he will say, “Mick give me a good prayer!” He has come to peace with his life and his death and will tell me from time to time, “I am ready to go!”

It has been humbling to watch people and their loved ones move through their own spiritual journey, and be allowed to be a part of it! I have come to realize that as their lives change physically, mentally, and spiritually, mine does as well. I love what I do and am grateful for the VNA and my fellow team members, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, physicians and support staff, as we work passionately in accomplishing our mission to provide loving compassionate care to those we serve.”

For 65 years, the tradition of generous giving to VNA and Hospice has sustained its ability to provide charitable care to Central Coast residents who lack sufficient health care coverage or are unable to pay. These funds booster the nonprofit agency’s ability to provide the highest quality care to all who need it. "My mother, Tomasita Pagen, passed away in November. Since I’ve been in Monterey, I have been attending as many grief classes as possible…All the classes have been extremely helpful and uplifting. I wanted to express my deep gratitude for your willingness to continue grief classes during the holidays. It was especially meaningful to me on July 4th as it was my deceased father’s birthday. I didn’t know how I was going to get through the day but thanks to your organization, the grief class still met and it meant the world to me. Thank you…"

"It has been an absolute blessing, honor and privilege to work with all of you; I am proud to have been part of the VNA family and will always have a heart for this organization, which is you. Thank you for your support, patience, and understanding while we built our palliative home care service and doubled our hospice program. As Mick is always so right on to acknowledge, thank you for the thoughtful and excellent care you give our patients and community. I will miss all of you. Aloha!"

Matt Katics, DO Medical Director for VNA Palliative Care

program on his leaving for a new post in Hawaii

"Seven years ago my journey brought me to the shores of Monterey Bay for the first time to be introduced to the VNA and all the wonderful people who were here at the time helping to make it a wonderful organization that it is. This organization has a great history. But it is not the organization that has made that history but the hard working, caring individuals that have given of themselves and left a legacy for what we now carry on that has made this place the great organization that it is. I am proud…to have worked alongside you in serving our community. Best wishes to each and every one of you."

A few years back, Mr. Wilkinson came from out of town to see his mother who was on VNA care. While he was there visiting the VNA nurse was in attendance and noticed that he was about to leave to return home a couple of hours away. The VNA RN encouraged him to stay as she felt that his mother was showing signs of getting ready to pass. So he sat next to his mother’s bedside for the next two hours and was with her during her final moments.

"It was a special time that I would have missed and regretted if it hadn’t been for the nurse asking me to stay a little longer. This has meant a great deal to me since and I now have my aunt on VNA care under Dr. Saddy. Thank you for helping me make these wonderful memories."

David Wilkinson(paraphrased from conversation with David Wilkinson)

I Wonder

Every morning as I awake I marvel at the beauty of that I see From the snow covered mountains to the poppy filled valleys I often wonder how did this all come to be

I wonder what composer wrote the melodies For all the birds to sing From whence comes the sense of happiness These joyous compositions bring

Who designed the elephant And the tiny mouse And who gave the tortoise Such a sturdy house

What brought forth the universe With all the stars so bright Who gave me the brain To appreciate this celestial delight

What great artist designed woman A creature praised in song and verse Did the same artist invent man A creature so destructive and perverse

Most of all I wonder What happens when I die Will all this have been for naught Or will I still feel a wind and see a sky

But soon will come the time down life's road When I no longer stand so tall Then death will come on the softness of the night Only then will I know the answers to the wonder of it all
