Growth and Transition Some of you have been reading messages from us for years,

while others may be just beginning to get an idea of what Riverwood is all about. In 1995, the year of our founding, we never imagined how essential and relevant Riverwood would become in our community. Even more today, we need a place that celebrates diversity and offers a support system that lifts us up and sees the best in ALL of us.

2016 was a year of growth and transition. A record number of lives have been touched through equine-assisted activities at the farm and with our Mobile Education and Outreach trailer. Your generosity, through a matching grant campaign, helped to provide a specially fitted saddle for each of the horses. We were also able to host an advanced certification workshop, which led to two of Riverwood’s instructors becoming PATH Intl. advanced level therapeutic riding instructors. Additionally, the matching grant enabled us to establish a small building fund to meet future maintenance needs.

In June 2016, Riverwood’s founder and executive director announced her retirement, effective January 1, 2018. The board of directors hired Laura Pallavicini, our current program director, to fill the position. Susan and Laura have worked together for more than 16 years and Riverwood is excited for both Susan and Laura to take on new roles in the year to come.

We are hopeful and energized as we look to Riverwood’s future. Plans are moving forward to build a Riverwood farm store, The Coop, which will house a new community-based instruction program. The program will serve teens and young adults, teaching both life and job skills. The store will sell used tack, local produce and Riverwood merchandise. In the coming year, we will also begin the process of advancing at least one instructor to the PATH Intl. master level. This is part of our continued commitment to the highest quality service to the special needs population in our community. With a master level instructor, we hope to become a center for research in the field of equine-assisted activities and an educational resource for other therapeutic riding centers in our region. “Walk On,” Riverwood!

Our HerdRiverwood is deeply committed to caring for the horses and ponies that have been entrusted to us for the

remainder of their lives. Riverwood’s therapeutic riding horses give their mind, body and spirit to serve our students, helping many of them reach goals once thought to be impossible. It is our responsibility to provide continuing care for our horses through the end of life, including retirement from program activities and rehabilitation after illness or injury. This is a top priority for the Riverwood staff, board and students not only because of our ethical beliefs and mission work, but also because it teaches our students valuable lessons about love, commitment and grief.

Riverwood’s equine partner, Skip, has been in retirement on our farm for 5 years now. Previously living on a farm where he was a companion to young horses in the pasture, Skip found his way to Riverwood once the colts and fillies became too rough on his aging body. At Riverwood, Skip used his knack for caretaking to help riders of all ages and abilities. A truly versatile horse, Skip cared for hundreds of our students from some of the smallest and most fragile riders, to those who were independent. He even traveled to horse shows to help those independent riders demonstrate their skills to the world. Over the years, Skip’s kind and sensitive personality also aided in many equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions, in which he helped people in life changing ways. As the inevitable effects of time took their toll, Skip retired from program activities. Riverwood is honored to have the opportunity to give back to an equine who has given so much of himself to others by caring for him through the golden years of his life. Although he can no longer carry riders, Skip still loves to help teach students the ins and outs of grooming, and who can blame him?! “Walk on,“ Skip.

Melissa’s Riverwood StoryIn 2008, the unthinkable happened; Melissa sus-

tained a spinal cord injury and stroke, which resulted in health issues including chest down paralyzation, partial blindness, and loss of some strength and coor-dination on one side. Amongst many other life changes that came along with her permanent debilitating injury, Melissa thought horses would be a life-long love she would simply have to give up. However, after learning about Riverwood and meeting with Riverwood’s pro-gram director, Laura, Melissa was pleasantly surprised to find herself brimming with new hope. Laura con-veyed a sincere enthusiasm and commitment to create a program that would fit Melissa’s needs. Although she would be unable to ride, Melissa began taking ground lessons in natural horsemanship.

Seven years later, Melissa’s experience at Riverwood has touched her life in more ways than she ever imag-ined it would. She has gradually seen improvements in her physical fitness including greater balance, flexibility and coordination, but perhaps the greatest and most surprising benefits have been psychological. Although a generally optimistic person, Melissa’s positive atti-tude could not keep her from struggling to overcome periods of depression and anxiety after her injury. One of the first things she noticed after she started lessons at Riverwood was a complete change in her mood and outlook on life; she found herself feeling more positive on the weeks she went to the farm. Laura and Melissa’s horse, Angel, have also helped her realize the value of living in the moment and acknowledging true feelings. Melissa tells us, “When I am feeling stressed and am trying to act as if I am not, Angel lets me know; I lose my connection with her. As soon as I admit to her and myself that something is going on, though, we both relax and reconnect in a way that is nothing short of magical and amazing.” Every week, Melissa learns more about patience, awareness, self-acceptance, and flexibility as she also grows in confidence and competence. Melissa shares, “At Riverwood, I am learning to develop a kind of peace and happiness I never knew I was lacking and have found a place where I feel loved and accepted. In short, it’s not just a place of learning. It’s a place where I feel I have a home.”

Loving Remembrance of Karly Bertram

In July 2016, we said goodbye to one of Riverwood’s long-time students, Karly Bertram. Karly was a student at Riverwood for 12 years and absolutely loved every moment she spent at the farm and the many friends she made over those years. Being a part of

the Riverwood family brought her great joy. We are thankful for all the jokes, laughter, tears, and love that we shared with her and because of her. Karly’s presence is still felt at the farm, and we know her love will always be with us. Tony, pictured with Karly here, was one her favorite horses at Riverwood. They are joined in spirit under the Carolina silverbell tree in Riverwood’s front pasture. Also in Karly’s memory, Tony’s hoof prints lead the way into the barn at our new front entrance ramp. “Walk On,” Karly!
