Letter from West Suburban Humane Society’s Executive Director and Board President

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, we would like to thank you for your support of West Suburban Humane Society in 2016. This year we celebrated 44 years of helping animals in need.

A few of the program highlights from this past year include:

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our generous supporters who contributed to our work in 2016. Every dollar is important and without your help, we would not be able to further our mission of helping homeless animals. You can, and do, make a difference in the lives of these animals.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Bahlmann Carolyn Mossberger President Executive Director

• In 2016 we adopted out 706 dogs and cats. Several of these animals needed life saving medical treatment which we were able to provide through the generosity of our supporters.

• We had 543 dedicated volunteers providing 36,500 hours of service to the shelter, through cleaning animal areas, facilitating adoptions, transporting, socializing, fostering and working special events. We couldn’t survive without our wonderful volunteers.

• Our humane education program continues to make an impact in the lives of children in the western suburbs. This year we were awarded a $2,500 grant from The DuPage Community Foundation. This grant helped underwrite scholarships for 25 kids to attend our Junior Volunteer Summer Camp.

West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) is a volunteer-based, animal welfare organization that was founded in 1972 as a lost and found referral service. We provide housing for up to 25 dogs and 60 cats at a time. We operate at full capacity at all times with animal care and adoptions being provided by 2 full-time and 6 part-time employees and nearly 500 volunteers. Our facility is open to the public 6 days a week. We continue to reunite lost animals and their owners by maintaining a database with information on over 33,000 pets and their owners, and by providing free pet identification tags to all pet owners.

MissionWSHS is dedicated to operating a premier animal shelter for the purpose of finding safe, permanent and compatible homes to adopt domestic dogs and cats. We are committed to educating and encouraging the public to humanely care for dogs and cats.

VisionWSHS will achieve and sustain its reputation for being the premier humane organization in Illinois. To achieve such recognition, WSHS will focus on the following critical components:

Advocacy: WSHS will promote the humane care of dogs and cats by working with government agencies and other agencies to promote the humane care of animals.

Care: WSHS will be the preeminent provider of animal care, working with high quality veterinarians to provide the most appropriate medical treatment for non-terminal conditions of cats and dogs in our care. Further, WSHS will develop innovative practices, such as working with reputable trainers in the area to ensure that every animal in our care receives the best total care before being adopted by the most compatible owner.

Education: WSHS will educate our staff, volunteers and members of the community on proper pet health care and safety. We will provide ample information and constant support to our adoptive families and act as an invaluable resource for educating the public at large.

Fundraising: WSHS will remain financially solvent and transparent so that we can continue to focus on finding new sources of revenue and maintaining our relationship with those who have provided financial contributions.

Values: We believe in the following core values: • Serving as a resource to educate the community and animal owners about responsible dog and cat care.• Providing high quality medical treatment for animals in our care.• Controlling the pet population through spay and neuter• To always act ethically and in the best interests of both animals and potential adopters.• Appreciating our dedicated volunteers and staff• Working as a team to develop creative solutions for potential adopters and achieve the best results• Having fun and enjoying our work

Nadirah – A Story of Survival Nadirah was found on a cold winter morning. It was obvious that she had been living outside for a long time and was in bad shape. She was skinny and had a gaping wound on her neck. On closer inspection we realized that the wound was from a collar that was embedded in her neck. We rushed Nadirah to the vet where she had surgery to remove it.

The collar was not the only issue Nadirah had to deal with. She was severely underweight, covered in fleas and FIV+. The odds were stacked against her but we knew we couldn’t give up on her.

After surgery, Nadirah went to a foster home to recuperate. Finally, after 2 1/2 months, her neck had closed completely. A lot of medical intervention and home care gave this FIV+ girl a chance to heal faster. Nadirah also gained 1 1/2 pounds since being rescued from outside. At last, with her fur growing back, a full belly, complete range of motion in her neck and not feeling like she is being strangled, Nadirah could show her loving side. She is a huge cuddler and adores attention! All she needs now is a loving home of her own.

Without the generosity of our supporters, we would not be able to give animals like Nadirah the care they need. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your continued support.

WSHS Success StoriesJack – A Big Dog with a Big Heart

Jack is a 6 year old Labrador Retriever, who had one home his whole life before becoming homeless due to a family crisis. He came to West Suburban Humane Society in search of a new family. When he arrived we discovered he was overweight, limping and had a mass on his front leg, so we took him to the vet right away. As it turns out, Jack had a lot of medical problems.

Jack had a torn ACL and meniscus on his left leg, a partial tear of the ACL on the right, hookworm, lungworm, a mast cell tumor, and a broken canine tooth with pulp exposure. This required three surgeries, many medications and a weight loss regimen to take the stress off of his joints. To fix Jack completely, it cost our shelter $8000 and that’s with the discounted rates we receive from our vets.

At West Suburban Humane Society, we never turn our back on an animal in need. But we couldn’t do it without the help of our generous supporters. Donating toward Jack’s treatments, medications and surgeries will not only insure that he gets everything he needs, it will also help the shelter when other animals are in need. By taking some of Jack’s financial burden off of West Suburban Humane Society now, you will be putting the shelter in a better position to support the next homeless pet with medical issues.

Jack deserves a pain-free life and when you donate to his cause, you will help to make that goal a reality. West Suburban Humane Society will be extremely grateful for your support. It will be a huge help and will be paid forward.

Jack is now happy, healthy and ready to find his forever home! The staff, board and Jack heartily thank you for your support of West Suburban Humane Society! Your donation can and does save lives!

Both of our 2016 Success Stories highlight the importance of WSHS’ foster care program. While we love when our animals find forever homes with their foster parents, this also means WSHS always needs new foster families! Apply to be a foster care family at www.wshs-dg.org

WSHS is dedicated to operating a premier animal shelter that provides the best treatment for dogs and cats in its care. However, like most everything, quality services come at a price. Due to the shelter’s tight budget, many animals would not be able to receive adequate care without significant withdrawal from the organization’s operating budget and/or large increases in adoption fees. Luckily, WSHS is fortunate enough to have many partners that provide essential services for a fraction of their retail cost. This generosity allows WSHS to continue to care for and place animals into their forever homes at a reasonable fee for adopters and manageable budget for the shelter.

WSHS attributes a large portion of our success to the generosity of our partners who provide an array of essential services. We thank them for their dedication towards animal welfare, and continued commitment to WSHS.

Why Give to WSHS?At the West Suburban Humane Society, we never turn our backs on an animal in need.

Since our founding in 1972, the shelter has relied completely on the generosity of its donors to provide animal care and shelter for thousands of cats and dogs. The contributions of caring and generous individuals -- volunteers, adopters, community members -- have empowered us to take in a cat with a broken leg, a dog with a heart condition, and make sure those animals live their lives as a family’s loving companion.

Where another shelter would euthanize a cat with heartworm, we make sure she gets the medication she needs. Where another shelter would turn away a litter of puppies with Parvo, we take them in and treat them until they are well. Where another shelter would euthanize a dog or cat that stayed for months, just to make room for another animal, we remain committed to getting that animal a home.

Our needs are as varied as our success stories and as big as the job we do. We’re seeking funds to save lives, first and foremost. Veterinary care costs our shelter more than $50,000 each year, and that’s with the generous discounts our partner vets are able to provide. Pet food and animal care, all add up to more than $200,000 annually.

In addition, WSHS is planning for a new shelter. Our building is old and was not designed as a shelter, and though we do the best we can with what we have, our mission is to operate a premier animal shelter, giving our animals, volunteers and adopters the best experience we can. While we operate on a very tight budget, several generous gifts have provided seed money to begin exploring shelter plans and construction designs.

Before we can commit to such a large project, however, we need to ensure all our current needs can be met. Our first responsibility is to our animals, and as we look to the future we must maintain the present. Your gift to the WSHS -- whether an annual gift, a monthly donation, a corporate sponsorship or a legacy gift -- will save lives right now, and ensures that our mission of caring for homeless dogs and cats continues.

Because of you, we’ve been able to provide quality animal care for more than 40 years. With your help, we will continue to provide it for at least 40 more.

All donations to WSHS are 100% tax deductible. For any questions regarding donations to WSHS, please contact Carolyn Mossberger, Executive Director, at 630-960-9600 or [email protected]. WSHS extends our sincerest gratitude to our entire community for their continued commitment and support of the shelter.

In 2011, WSHS was able to recognize one of our biggest dreams. We remodeled our cattery and went from cats living in cages to cats enjoying a spacious, open cattery. Since opening the cattery, our cat adoptions have increased by 5%. Outbreaks of upper respiratory and other feline illnesses have decreased by almost 50% The cats are happier, healthier and more adoptable!

In 2007, WSHS founded one of our most important programs, the STAR (Special Training and Reinforcement) program. The STAR program sends dogs with behavioral problems to camp. The problems can range from difficult-to-handle or aggression to shyness and overall confidence building. Many animals have been neglected and abused and have developed negative behaviors to help them cope. The program allows dogs a smoother transition to successful adoption placement. In addition, the quick transition helps to free up available space for other animals needing to be placed up for adoption.

In 2015, WSHS was able to hire a part time Humane Education Manager. Since that time we have implemented 7 presentations that can be tailored to academic and social needs with collaboration from the classroom teacher or group leader; shelter tours; after school programs for kids of all ages; 5 weeks of Junior Volunteer Summer Camp; and Party Pals.

At WSHS, a dedicated staff, volunteer base and the retained service of several veterinarians has allowed us to save the lives of and place over 600 homeless animals each year into new homes. Every animal that is brought to our shelter receives whatever type of veterinary care that is needed, including surgery and hospitalization for trauma cases, long-term care and medication for viral and bacterial infections, and treatment of parasite infestations such as heartworm. Orphaned kittens and puppies as well as the infirm receive loving care in our Temporary Care Homes until they are ready for adoption.

WSHS is very fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers. With their help, WSHS is able to operate smoothly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In 2016,more than 543 volunteers contributed more than 36,500 hours cleaning animal areas, maintaining the shelter, assisting potential adopters, transporting animals, and of course, caring for the cats and dogs. Volunteers are also involved in special events and fundraisers, including several adoption events, Petals for Pets plant sale, and BarkaPALooza. Additionally, WSHS volunteers contribute their time and expertise to the shelter by serving on special committees such as the Fundraising Committee and Humane Education Committee.

WSHS is also fortunate to have more than 35 volunteers who act as temporary care or foster homes, providing constant and more individualized care for cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens in their homes. The staff of WSHS believes our volunteers are the best in the business and we’re not alone. Volunteers are the heart of WSHS. The passion and commitment of our volunteers makes it possible for WSHS to achieve our mission of rescuing, providing care, and placing so many animals in their forever homes. On behalf of the entire staff and the Board of Directors, thank you to all of our volunteers!

Thank You to the 2016 WSHS Volunteers
