Thank you for being part of the Kentucky Humane Society family. Your support helped us achieve amazing things in 2016, all on behalf of companion animals and the people who love them.

I am constantly humbled by the hard work and compassion of our staff, volunteers and donors. Thanks to all your efforts, last year we found homes for over 6,300 grateful animals. In this annual report, you’ll learn more about our lifesaving efforts, which your support helps make possible.

As wonderful as 2016 was for our animals, I am also excited to share with you some of our 2017 projects:

In March 2017, we renamed our Main Campus on Steedly Drive the Sam Swope Pet Treatment & Lifesaving Center (TLC) in honor of the late Sam Swope, who made a legacy gift to help our most fragile animals. The Sam Swope Pet TLC is our “hub” for all incoming animals – readying dogs and cats for adoption at our 10 offsite adoption centers, located throughout the Louisville area. It is also the place where our animals who need extra TLC, including medical care, receive leading-edge care.

The Sam Swope Pet TLC also houses our new Healthy Pets Clinic. Five days a week, the clinic offers low-cost vaccines

and basic preventatives as well as diagnostics and treatment of minor medical needs for local pets. The goal is to ensure that an owner’s financial limitations are not a barrier to their beloved pets receiving lifesaving preventative care.

And earlier this year, we announced the opening of the Sam Swope Pet Retreat, a unique behavioral rehabilitation center where animals can recover from neglect, abuse and lack of socialization. In the first few months of the Sam Swope Pet Retreat being open, we have already seen amazing results. It is so rewarding to prepare an animal for adoption and then introduce them to their excited family.

Throughout 2016, the Kentucky Humane Society worked tirelessly to find

loving, permanent homes for the animals under our care. In all, 6,071

dogs, cats and horses were adopted through KHS last year; 123 animals

were transferred to other agencies for specialized placement and 125 lost

dogs and cats were reunited with their owners. In all, we saved 96% of the

animals who came through our doors. Whatever the reason an animal

comes to KHS, the pet stays available for adoption for as long as needed.

For the fifth year in a row, we met our goal of finding homes for every

adoptable pet.

* KHS calculates our save rate (also known as the live release rate) on the number of adoptions, transfer of animals to rescue groups and animals who are returned to their owners.

Saving Kentucky’s Shelter Animals

Saving the lives of animals in Kentucky means more than accepting

surrendered pets and taking in strays. It also means helping at-risk

animals throughout the state – particularly those in overcrowded municipal

shelters where adoption options are few. From Kenton County in far

northern Kentucky, to Calloway County at the farthest south, the Kentucky

Humane Society worked with shelters and rescues from 31 Kentucky

counties in 2016. Some shelters bring their pets to us. In other cases,

our dedicated staff and volunteers make the trip to collect these animals.

Once the dogs and cats arrive at KHS, they are evaluated, given the care

they need, and then our adoptions staff find them loving homes.

At the Kentucky Humane Society, we are expanding our circle of influence

across the state and helping more and more rural shelters and rescues

find homes for the pets they care for.

The Kentucky Humane Society’s Equine C.A.R.E. Program assists at-risk

horses throughout the state. From providing salt and hay during the winter

months to Eastern Kentucky’s free-roaming horses, to caring for orphaned

foals until they are old enough to be adopted or sent to trusted rescue

partners, our team works hard all year long to ensure the health and

safety of Kentucky’s companion horses.

In addition to finding adoptive homes for abandoned or unwanted

horses, our team worked with horse owners in Kentucky to help end

horse overpopulation through gelding – or castration – clinics. By making

this service available and free, we are helping reduce the number of

unwanted horses in our state.

Proactive ProgramsOur proactive programs are designed to help families

have healthy, happy, lifelong relationships with

their animals, and thus reduce the number of pets

surrendered to shelters. We counsel pet parents about

available resources through our free Pet Help Line. We

educate children on the role of pet guardianship. And

we offer positive dog training classes (both group and

individual) and consultations to help families bond with

their dogs and address unwanted behaviors.

Our S.N.I.P. Clinic helps to stem pet overpopulation by

providing low-cost spay/neuter services for owned pets

and community cats. Our Healthy Pets Clinic provides

affordable vaccines and preventative medicine to

owned cats and dogs, helping keep them healthy and

in their homes.

Providing Extra TLC

537Fragile animals were given a 2nd chance

The Kentucky Humane Society strives to help even the most fragile of

companion animals, giving them an opportunity to find forever homes.

Our veterinary team and specialists around the area provide healing

treatment to animals who came to us sick and injured. Because of our

TLC Fund, in 2016 we were able to offer 210 companion animals the

specialized care they needed to heal and be prepared for families of their

own. Injuries and illnesses ranged from correcting heart defects to saving

mangled limbs and everything in between.

We also provide rehabilitation for behaviorally challenged shelter pets.

Many animals come to us with broken spirits and disruptive behaviors

that with time, love and specialized care can be repaired. Through our

donor-supported TLC Fund, 327 shelter dogs learned that humans are

good and can be trusted and how to behave in safe and appropriate

ways. This fund ensures that every animal receives the second chance

they deserve.

Volunteers play a vital role in caring for our shelter pets and ensuring

that the Kentucky Humane Society remains a strong, active part of our

community. Our volunteers care for and enrich the lives of animals in our

shelter and in our adoption centers. Volunteers also bring animals into

their homes to care for them and prepare them for adoption. Others help

us with office tasks and veterinary care, or transport animals from rural

shelters to our doors so we can care for them. Volunteers also help with

fundraisers and are ambassadors in the community. In total, volunteers

worked 85,725 hours for the Kentucky Humane Society in 2016.

We value our volunteers and thank each and every one of them for the time

and effort they devote to our mission. Their involvement helps us save more

than 6,000 dogs, cats and horses each year.
