Dear Investors in Hale,In 2015 Hale launched its campaign to “Do More, For More” and provide much needed investments in staff, infrastructure and programs. Over the course of 2015 and throughout 2016, Hale reached and surpassed its campaign goal of $3 million to support these programs and continue our annual support of general operations.

Through the generosity of so many, we have grown our Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program in partnership with Boston Public Schools and Match Charter School. We have made critical investments and improvements to Noanet Dam, ensuring that the pond on which more than 110,000 swimming lessons take place each summer will continue to be a safe, clean place to swim, boat and play. North Beach, the waterfront home for the majority of our summer campers, received dramatic improvements to both its aesthetics and as protections for erosion. Hale’s full time staff has grown, ensuring that we continue to expand our marketing, communications, advancement, and education programs. A new building, Simches Family Center, was constructed to ensure that our partner, Aspire, could continue to grow its summer programs at Hale; that building will also be the home to a project we plan to launch for the academic year in 2018.

While growth and change are themes, Hale remains consistent to its mission, values and programs. We truly can do more, for more, thanks to the support and investments of 1,594 individuals, corporations and foundations who ensure that Hale’s best and brightest days are still ahead of us.

Thank you for your commitment to Hale,

Jennifer AntonucciBoard President

CAMPWith over 4,400 children participating, summer abounds with activity on these 1,137 acres. Hale is proud to provide unique opportunities to campers from over 70 communities in the surrounding area. Our camp partners include:

• Aspire, Charlestown• Bird Street Community Center, Dorchester• Boston Public Schools, Boston• Jewish Community Centers, Newton• South Shore Stars, East Weymouth• Waltham Boys and Girls Club, Waltham• Watertown Boys and Girls Club, Watertown

Children partaking in the Hale summer experience enjoy swimming, boating, high and low ropes programming, hiking, nature exploration, wellness programming and more.

Of the 4,400 children who come to Hale, over half receive some form of financial aid.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMSA favorite for over 50 years, Membership Beach is a fun and affordable opportunity for families to participate in swimming, boating, arts and crafts, special events and environmental education all summer long. Our newest offering is the Hale Afterschool program which gives middle school children the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors to be active and engaged in a multitude of activities. Throughout the year, Hale also offers special events for the general public such as snow shoe hikes, Hale-a-Bration, and our challenging Race Series.

OUTINGS TO ADVENTUREIn 2016, over 8,000 people took part in programs at Hale as a part of a fall, winter or spring activity. Many of the visitors were students. Hale collaborates with schools and education groups to create experiential outdoor opportunities for learning. These programs often include high and low ropes elements, Map and Compass Adventures, and exploration on our Floating Classroom.

PUBLIC ACCESSAlthough privately owned, Hale is open to the public for hiking, walking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing or simply enjoying the peaceful solitude of the woods. Many of Hale’s buildings and outdoor spaces are now available for rent to outside groups.

PARTNERSWithout our partners, we could not fulfill our mission. Hale is proud to have collaborated with the following organizations to enhance programming:

• Boston Athletic Association• Boston After School and Beyond• Courageous Sailing• Dedham Medical Associates• Rodman Ride for Kids• Summer Fund• Trustees of Reservations

Tom and Angela started jogging and biking at Hale as newlyweds in 1992. By 1994, they found themselves pushing their newborn son in a stroller on Hale’s paved roads and less challenging trails. Today, the empty nesters find that trail grooming and blazing are great for being together and exercise, and despite being here for years are getting to know Hale from the inside out. As Tom says, “you start to notice where it turns, climbs, and descends, where trees cross the trail, where it’s wide, where it closes in on you, where trails run into each other, and where the un-mapped trails will send you into who-knows-what.”

They fully believe in Hale’s mission. “This place gets better every year, grows, stays modern, and innovates unlike any organization I can think of, and to think it’s in my backyard and has allowed me to be part of it growth and development,” adds Angela.

THE CHASE FAMILY

For Howie and Max, Membership Beach has become a home away from home in the summer months. The two have been coming to the beach for seven years. They learned to swim here, and it is where they caught their first fish. As soon as the snow melts, the countdown begins – “when will the beach be open?” Their parents, Lennox and Beverly, love the friendships the family has made and remark at their growing love for the outdoors.

“Hale is such a cornerstone of our summers that we have often skipped vacation offers and youth sports because it interfered with our Membership Beach plans. The school year is hectic for our family due to multiple professional obligations. Membership Beach provides a nice structure for our family that allows us to slow down and relish some childhood memories,” said Lennox.

“It is great that my

children can play freely

here... nowadays kids

can’t roam around and

play with friends like

they used to do - here

they can. That is the

charm of Hale.”

Ross Bubly remembers being a child and starting summer mornings around the fire circle at camp. Now he leads the morning circle to the delight of a new generation of campers. The college senior is directing Hale Day Camp’s Leaders In Training (LIT) and having been an LIT himself truly represents the best of what we hope for our campers to become.

Inspired by both his own teachers and counselors, Ross is aiming to be a high school history teacher. He says, “I just want to be as good as they were.”

“On Friday night - the

night before my son’s

birthday he said, ‘I wish

Hale is a private, non-profit educational organization that manages over 1,137 acres of woodlands, including four ponds and over twenty miles of trails in Westwood and Dover, Massachusetts. Hale is most widely recognized for its summer day camp programs which annually serve over 4,400 children from 70 communities in the Greater Boston area. Hale also offers a family program, outdoor and environmental education experiences for children and adults, and open space for casual recreational use.

The essence of Hale can be found in Robert Sever Hale’s original desire for the organization he founded in 1918. The current programs and land management practices are the legacy of his wish “to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens” and to use the land “so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature.” The goal of today’s programs is to develop intelligent leaders and environmentally educated citizens. We believe that the diversity of the natural environment must be reflected back in the diversity of the people who experience Hale, and we strive to provide programs and opportunities for people of any race, background, religion or economic status.
