Letter from the Board President

Dear Friends and Supporters,In his book, Biophilia, the naturalist E.O. Wilson evocatively described the

hunger that drives us to seek contact with other living things, both plants and animals:

Biophilia, ….. the innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes. ….. From infancy we concentrate happily on ourselves and other organisms. We learn to distinguish life from the inanimate and move toward it like moths to a porch light. …… to explore and affiliate with life is a deep and complicated process in mental development. To an extent still undervalued in philosophy and religion, our existence depends on this propensity, our spirit is woven from it, hope rises on its currents.

These words also describe the energy propelling Bangor Land Trust’s mission of connecting our community with its home in nature.

Our major news from 2016 includes the opening of a new trail inviting visitors to explore the previously hidden parts of Central Penjajawoc preserve. This half-mile loop is a treasure. It branches off the main loop trail, winds through a mature hemlock grove, crosses a stream, traverses a field of luxuriant milkweed, and offers a long view over Penjajawoc Marsh.

Thanks to the cartographic skills of board member Bill Phillips and our Program Coordinator, Donne Sinderson, we’ve been able to respond to our community’s need for maps of over 10 miles of Bangor Land Trust trails. Trail maps are currently viewable and downloadable from our website; we look forward to producing print editions in 2017.

We’ve also been working on making Bangor’s Wild Back Yard more accessible in other ways. Thanks to Donne and everyone who helped her by sharing photos, bangorlandtrust.org now contains a field guide to local plants and animals. If you see one that we haven’t listed, please snap a photo and send it to us! Your land trust has also kept up its commitment to offer a community program each month to share the fun of exploring what you can see, hear, touch, and experience on Bangor Land Trust preserves.

It takes a whole community to care for its home in nature. A resounding thank you to all Bangor Land Trust members, friends, and supporters. With many thanks for all your support,

Lucy Quimby, PresidentBangor Land Trust

The Preserves

Walden-Parke Preserve - Phases I and IIFritz and Caroline Oldenburg and Dennis and Jane Shubert (Walden-Parke LLC) gifted 205 acres of Walden-Parke Preserve to Bangor Land Trust in December 2005, and an additional 205 acres in December 2011. This preserve contains large beaver wetlands and several additional habitat types including hardwood and softwood forests in varying stages of maturity, vernal pools, and a portion of Caribou Bog. Woodland flowers bloom here in the spring, and blackberries can be found in the fall. It is across the old Veazie RR bed from the City Forest. The well-marked Blue Trail forms an easy-to-walk loop about 2 ½ miles long, leaving from the cul-de-sac at the end of Tamarack Trail, off Walden Parke Way.

Levant WetlandsBangor Land Trust owns over 10 acres in Levant, including a wetland, spruce forest, and a field that is growing in with raspberries. The property is located close to a large marsh and offers valuable habitat to local wildlife. As part of the watershed that connects Black Stream, Kenduskeag Stream, and the Penobscot River, this wetland is closely intertwined with the health and vitality of surrounding ecosystems.

South Penjajawoc OverlookSince 2007 we have held sole title to 3.6 acres on the west shore of Penjajawoc Marsh. Our interest in this property was a gift from Columbia Street Baptist Church in 2003. Although there is a right-of-way from Essex Street, there is no path and the preserve is hard to find. Its major value at present is as wildlife habitat.

West Penjajawoc GrasslandsFritz and Caroline Oldenburg gifted this 13.1 acre parcel in 2004. The upland meadow habitat adjoins an additional 18.4 acre parcel of upland meadow and emergent wetland gifted to Maine Audubon in 2000. Grassland birds in New England are threatened by declining habitat. Bangor Land Trust is meeting the challenge of maintaining grassland habitat where Bobolinks, Savannah Sparrows, and other grassland birds come to nest and raise their young. This accessible grassland, bordering on Penjajawoc Marsh, provides an excellent bird watching opportunity for Bangor residents and visitors.

Northeast Penjajawoc PreserveBangor Land Trust purchased this 80.5 acre property in 2006-2007 with support from the Land for Maine’s Future Program and North American Wetlands Conservation Act funds. It contains 18.4 acres of wetlands, including three of state significance: the northeast tip of Penjajawoc Marsh, a vernal pool, and a tributary marsh. BLT did extensive trail remediation to protect the wetlands and make the trails more pleasant for people to use. These trails connect to the old Veazie Railroad bed, which you can then follow northwards to Walden-Parke Preserve and the Bangor City Forest. A trail guide for this preserve is available on our website and at the BLT office. Trails also cross the Emera Maine Transmission Corridor from Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve to North Penjajawoc Forest. Beavers are currently hard at work on this preserve.

North Penjajawoc ForestIn November 2011 we received title to 105 acres next to the Bangor City Forest and Walden-Parke Preserve and across the Emera Maine transmission corridor from Northeast Penjajawoc Preserve. This property came from a local developer whose planned housing development intruded into the protection zone of a vernal pool elsewhere in Bangor. His development permit required that he conserve an unprotected vernal pool. He chose to do so by purchasing this parcel and transferring it to Bangor Land Trust, with restrictions imposed by the Army Corps of Engineers and monitored by Brewer Land Trust. The property contains several vernal pools and other wetlands, a stream, a mature mixed forest, and an extensive network of trails. Kiosks mark entrances from the old Veazie RR bed and from the Bangor City Forest’s West Trail.

Central Penjajawoc PreserveIn 2010, the Land for Maine’s Future and North American Wetlands ConservationAct programs enabled Bangor Land Trust to purchase two parcels totaling 87 acres. In 2013, Bangor Land Trust purchased another 94 acres making a total of 182 acresof forest and fields. You can enter this preserve from Essex Street, via a small parking

area just below the level of the road 400 yards south of the intersection of Burleigh andEssex. A narrow 1½ mile loop trail is open to foot traffic only (skis and snowshoes OK too). The trail has been cut and marked, and officially opened in August 2013. October 2016 saw the opening of an additional ½ mile loop through hemlock woods and a field of luxuriant milkweed, offering long views over Penjajawoc Marsh.

Despite its highly developed urban core, Bangor is surrounded by wildlifehabitat; wildlife inhabit our city too. That is part of the pleasure of living here.As caretakers of Bangor’s Wild Back Yard, Bangor Land Trust is concernednot only with the placement and quality of trails, but also with the quality ofhabitat for the animals that live within our city limits. Many factors are puttingour wildlife under stress including new patterns of land usage, climate change, and the use of pesticides and herbicides across the country. Bangor Land Trustis doing its part to create good animal homelands on our preserves for all ourneighbors, from ichneumonid wasps to Isabella moths, from bumblebees tobeavers.

• Accurate downloadable maps of all Bangor Land Trust’s 10 plus miles of trails are now available at bangorlandtrust.org; a paper version is in progress.

• We continued our community outreach with a dozen popular programs, including a series of wildflower walks, targeting different stages of the blooming and fruiting cycle.

• Bangor Land Trust’s Take to the Woods Trail Challenge had another successful summer, introducing families to the trails on our preserves.

• Bangorlandtrust.org’s The More You Know... pages have become a crowdsourced online field guide to local plants and animals. It’s a work in process - we welcome your photos!

• Opening a new trail inviting visitors to explore the previously hidden parts of Central Penjajawoc preserve. This half – mile loop is a treasure. It branches off the main loop trail, winds through a mature hemlock grove, crosses a stream, traverses a field of luxuriant milkweed, and offers a long view over Penjajawoc Marsh.
