AMES CHAMBER GOLF DAYThe Ames Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Day is a four-person best shot tournament for Chamber members of all talent levels! Participants are served a complimentary lunch with an afternoon tee time. Prizes are awarded for the top three teams and the last place team. Leadership Ames was created by the Ames Chamber of Commerce to develop informed, involved and concerned local leaders. The program gives both experienced and developing leaders a broader view of civic leadership responsibilities and opportunities through direct contact with a wide spectrum of institutions and people who shape the community where we live and work. Participants selected for the Leadership Ames Class will listen to presen-tations, debate issues, participate in class activities, visit with area leaders, tour facilities and get to know individuals representing a broad cross-section of the community. Class members also complete a service project of their choosing. 12 sessions, plus a graduation evening event - Sessions held September through May.

2016-2017

The Ames Chamber of Commerce and Young Professionals of Ames are pleased to present Youth Leadership Ames. Following in the footsteps of the Chamber’s successful Leadership Ames program, the Youth Leadership Ames program is designed to develop the community leadership potential of area high school students in the Chamber member school districts. High School juniors from member schools (Ames, Ballard, Gilbert) are selected to partic-ipate in this 9-month leadership program held September through May. Each month, the selected individuals will focus on a different topic: team building, non-profit organizations, city organization, healthcare, leadership development, community development, business & industry, secondary education. They will also have the opportunity to tour area business-es and hear from community and business leaders. A graduation dinner concludes the year.

The Ames Economic Development Commission (AEDC) hosts a series of three or four events over the summer months for interns in the Ames/Story County area. The Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market is a new tradition for Ames and the surrounding area. The Market has grown to host 3,000 plus visitors each week. Showcasing locally produced fruits and vegetables, honey, homemade cheese, baked goods, jams and jellies, popcorn, local meat, eggs, bedding plants, perennials, and cut flowers. Each year, the Chamber assembles a delegation of community, business, and institution-al leaders to travel to Washington, D.C. and present our federal priorities to our federal elected officials and select federal agencies. The trip provides an excellent opportunity to provide a clear and unified message to our elected officials, their staffs’, and federal agen-cy representatives’ regarding critical policy issues of the Ames community. Through this direct interaction with our Senators, Congressmen, and federal officials, we ensure criti-cal policy issues of the Ames and Story County community are heard and addressed in the most effective and efficient manner possible.

Each year, the Ames Chamber works with local community, business, and institutional leaders and our partner organizations throughout the state to develop legislative priorities, which guide the Chamber’s advocacy efforts during the Legislative Session. The Chamber’s Legislative Agenda is unveiled at the December Legislative Luncheon and is distributed at all Chamber legislative events throughout the Session. Twice a year, YPA hosts a Read With Me event. YPA volunteers read to kindergarten, first and second grade students in the Ames Com-munity School District. In the past YPA has had nearly 50 volunteers reading to over 600 students. Volunteers read two to three books to a group of children and at the end of the reading adventure each child will receive a book to take home with them. YPA members enjoy sharing the joy of reading with these young students.
