THE BUY-INHOW GREAT LEADERS INSPIRE ACTION

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

-ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY

People don’t “buy-in” to _________________ you do they “buy-in” to _________________ you do it.

The goal as you get ready to launch your church is for you to connect with people

who _______________________ what you believe.

BOARDS & BUDGETSThere are two branches to your church – the spiritual body and the legal corporation. You, as the

pastor, must show _______________________ in both. Taken from bylaws that we use:

Because [Your Church Name] has two (2) complimentary branches; the spiritual body of

believers and the legal corporation, it is the senior pastor that administratively bridges

the gap between the two (2) branches. The senior pastor is primarily responsible for the

spiritual life of the church, therefore, he must be in a position corporately to insure that

financial strength is directed toward the ministries of his choice.

THREE BOARD SYSTEM

1. The _______________________ are a board of successful senior pastors who govern churches

outside of your church.

° Generally comprised of mentors of the senior pastor who pastor churches that are for

the most part larger than your church or at least have experience in pastoring churches

of similar style.

° In the case of alleged misconduct, they investigate and, if necessary, decide a disciplinary

course of action.

» Accountability: The overseers can be removed by the senior pastor, but only one

per year – again to prevent a dominating board member from forcing their ill

agenda.

» The senior pastor can only be removed by a majority vote of the overseers,

following an investigation.

2. The _______________________ are responsible for the financial well-being of the church.

° In most cases your Overseers will serve as trustees for you in the first year of your

church. This allows you time to identify prospective trustees and make sure they have

your heart and have some business wisdom before setting them into a trustee position.

° Monitor accounting and business practices.

° Vote on any mortgages, contracts, or major financial decisions.

° Assure fiscal responsibility (both to the church and the I.R.S.).

° Help develop the budget, manage the assets and aid in facility acquisition and

management.

» Accountability: Trustees are nominated by the senior pastor. They can be

removed by the senior pastor – but only one of them every six months (to prevent

the senior pastor from stacking the board with “yes” men if someone dared to

disagree with him).

3. The _______________________ is responsible for the spiritual well-being of the church.

° The functions of the Elders are to

» Maintain and teach by living a godly, Christian lifestyle

» Serve the Church by helping the Senior Pastor to establish the vision and direction

of the Church

» Provide leadership as a member of the Senior Pastoral Leadership Team

» Demonstrate leadership to the Members of the local Church

» Provide a prayer shield for the Church staff and the local Church

» Defend, protect and support the integrity of the Church staff and the local Church

» Pray for the sick

» Organize, implement and execute licensing and ordination requirements

and procedures

» Mediate disputes among the brethren

» Counsel with church members and staff

» Contact the Overseers to initiate investigation and potential discipline of the Senior

Pastor if a situation involving pastoral misconduct occurs

THREE STRONG BUDGETS

1. _______________________ Budget: what it takes for your personal household through

launch day.

° Moving expenses to relocate

° Household budget

Dear _______________________,

Thank you for joining us this weekend at Harbor Church. We’re committed to being a life-giving church

where people can connect with God and experience His presence and power in a real way. I extend a

personal invitation to you to join us as part of this exciting community.

You can continue to connect with Harbor Church in several ways. Our Growth Track is comprised of four

specifically designed monthly events. Each event helps you take a step towards God’s plan of fulfillment

for your life. Ultimately, our goal is to help you connect with a group of people where your life can touch

the lives of others. Visit our website for times and locations at each campus.

Our small groups are the real key to developing relationships and getting connected. They are held

every week in various locations throughout the city with many different types from which to choose.

Please visit our website at www.harborchurch.com/groups for a list of groups and more information.

God bless you and we look forward to seeing you again at one of our services – please visit our website

for service times at each campus.

Dear _______________________,

Congratulations! The greatest decision you will ever make is the decision to commit your life to Christ.

God loves you and wants to be an active part of your life each and every day!

The Harbor Church staff is committed to you. We are here to help you become a fully devoted follower

of Christ. Since making your decision today, you may be asking yourself, “Now what?” Let me make it

simple for you.

1. Be water baptized. Jesus commanded us to be water baptized to solidify our commitment to Him

through a public declaration of our faith. Our baptism service will be held Sunday June 3rd at 4:30 p.m.

2. Get involved in a local church. If you don’t already have a church that you call home, we invite you

to join us at Harbor Church. Each weekend you will grow as you engage in worship and learn practical

teaching from the Bible. Our next membership class is Sunday, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

3. Get in a small group. Small groups are small communities of people who meet in homes all over the

area each week. These groups study the Bible together, support each other, and become great friends.

For more information or to view a list of small groups which began in June 3, 2012 visit our website @

www.harborchurch.com.

4. Start growing in your relationship with Christ. Enclosed is our Growth Track brochure which will help

guide you on an exciting path of personal growth.

Once again, welcome to your new life in Christ! We are proud of you and the decision you have made.

If there is anything we can do for you, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

Reaching new heights together,

JOE SMITHPastor, Harbor Church

NEXT STEPS

Keys to Understand

• You have _______________________ to connect a new person

• God won’t send you people you can’t _______________________

• This process isn’t for _______________________ it’s for _______________________

1. Critical questions to ask yourself when developing your process

• Have I created or copied a _______________________ and _______________________ system?

• Are these Next Steps

° _______________________, _______________________, _______________________

for a newcomer?

2. The steps taken through the process

• Next Steps 1.0 (Membership)

° The Goal:

» “Who is the _______________________ and why did he plant this church?”

» _______________________ is this church going? (Vision)

» _______________________ are you planning to get there. (Structure and Strategy)

» _______________________ do you believe and can I _______________________

(Beliefs and Culture)

• Next Steps 2.0 (Essentials)

° The Goal:

» Define what discipleship truly is – a _______________________ process

» Create a Culture of _______________________ _______________________

» Get them _______________________ with _______________________

• Next Steps 4.0 (Dream Team)

° The Goal:

» Connect them relationally with the leaders of the ministry and other people.

(People want to serve where their friends serve)

Tips for Starting (or Improving the Process)

• Once you start the process… _______________________ the process.

• Promote that Sundays’ Class on that Sunday. Only one.

• Build _______________________ and _______________________ around the life-changing

benefits of your classes.

• Remove potential _______________________ and _______________________.

Common Mistakes

• We can’t do it every week because we are portable/small/etc…

• We don’t have enough to do it this month so we will wait

• We want to know how many people are coming so we will do signups

• We will take a break for the summer/holidays/etc…

SMALL GROUPSDevelop an effective small groups ministry by becoming a church _______________________ small

groups rather than a church _______________________ small groups.

WHY SMALL GROUPS?

• _______________________ happens in relationships.

• _______________________ happens in relationships.

• _______________________ happens in relationships.

Groups transfer the weight of _______________________ _______________________ off the pastor/

staff and ______________________________________________.

HOW DO I START GROUPS?

1. Let my dream team ______________________________________________

2. Groups will never take hold until I ______________________________________________

3. Ask people to take what they are _______________________ and make it a small group

4. ______________________________________________

HOW DO I RUN SMALL GROUPS?

• Plan on a _______________________ _______________________

° Gives new people a chance to _______________________ and _______________________

° Gives new leaders a chance _______________________ and new hosts a chance

_______________________

° Gives you new opportunities each year to get people excited _______________________

• Plan on a _______________________ _______________________ _______________________

° Gives people a chance to gather around felt needs and common interests

° Allows you to _______________________ _______________________ instead of

YOUR CALLING, ARC’S HELP

Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. - HABAKKUK 2.2 NKJV

Regardless of where you are in the process, make these four areas a priority.

1. _______________________ your call.

• Some people should absolutely plant a church. It is their destiny. It is what God has created

them to do.

• Some people should absolutely not plant a church. It is not their destiny. It is not what God as

created them to do.

• How do you decide which group you fit into? Examine these three areas and then look for

confirmation from others that they are in line.

° Your desires

° Your gifts

° Your character and timing

2. Build your _______________________ _______________________.

• Your home church

• Your potential overseers

• Your prayer base

• Your potential giving base

3. _______________________ in your family.

• Your marriage

• Your children

• Your extended family

“...A person who contributes to a church claiming tax-exempt status pursuant to Section

508(c) may deduct that contribution from his or her income, but if the contributor

is audited, he or she has the burden of establishing that the church in fact meets the

requirements of a Section 501(c)(3) organization. In other words, because the church

has not previously been determined by the IRS to have met Section 501(c)(3) criteria,

there is no presumption that the church is tax exempt…”

5. Establish Legal Ordination Program

WORSHIPCORE VALUES OF HIGHLANDS WORSHIP

1. Heart – We are passionate about the presence of God and live a life that reflects the love

of Christ.

Psalm 24:3-4 (NIV): 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god.

° VIBRANT SPIRITUALITY.

° Revelation 12:11 (NKJV): 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

» We are a presence filled and presence driven ministry.

» Our goal is for the people of our church experience the presence of God.

» Our worship experience happens before the congregation’s worship experience.

Personal devotion time is a non-negotiable.

° CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY.

° Proverbs 22:1 (NIV): 1 A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

» We value one-on-one and group discipleship

» We don’t elevate talent over character.

» We strive to build the kingdom of God and the team that He has given us, not just

our own success.

° EMPOWERED TEAM LEADERSHIP.

° Romans 12:8 (NIV): 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

» We develop leaders who are humble, devoted, and confident in what they do.

» We develop our own leadership through seeing leadership developed in others.

» We empower the next generation, and allow them to lead.

° PRACTICAL STEPS:

» Highlands Worship has the same vision as our Church.

» Worship Team is a part of the life of the church. – Services, Small Groups, etc.

» Constant Pastoral focus on the condition of the team’s hearts. – “Be ruthless with

your heart” –Matt Redman.

2. Community – We grow relationally with the team and have a genuine love for people.

Philippians 2:1-4 (NIV): 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

° UNITED VISION.

° Mark 3:25 (NIV): 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. » We want to hear the heart of our leadership as much as we can.

» We want to honor the vision and mantle of our leaders.

» We value and protect the platform that God has given us.

° TEAM CHEMISTRY.

° Ephesians 4:16 (NIV): 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

» Consistent rehearsals build consistent teams.

» Don’t underestimate the power of a party.

» We strive for collaboration not competition and look for the best in each other.

° CLEAR COMMUNICATION

° Habakkuk 2:2 (NIV): 2 Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.

» We are free with information because it builds confidence and trust.

» We explain the “why” before the “what”.

» We create an environment where the team feels free to verbalize what they are

thinking.

° PRACTICAL STEPS:

» Quarterly “Community Nights”.

» Monthly Worship Nights.

» Parties for specific teams. (Frontline Vocals/Drummers/Guitars etc.)

3. Excellence – We excel in musicianship and continually develop the talents that God has

given us.

Psalm 33:3 (NIV): 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. ° SKILLED MUSICIANSHIP.

° 1 Samuel 16:18 (NLT): 18 One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”

» We consistently work at getting better because we value excellence and diligence

in our craft.

» We push each other to be better.

° HONEST, HONORING, CONSISTENT FEEDBACK.

° Titus 2:7-8 (NLT): 7 And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. 8 Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.

» We value people over the mistake, but we don’t let the mistake go unaddressed.

» We extinguish the spirit of criticism but embrace critical thinking to solve problems.

» We receive feedback with grace and strive to grow and change.

ASSOCIATION OF RELATED CHURCHES80

° CREATIVE FREEDOM.

° Psalm 33:3 (NIV): 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. » We ask for ideas from the team and use their ideas as much as possible.

» We constantly look to bring new ideas to everything we do.

» We create opportunities for the team to be involved in everything we do, big

and small.

° PRACTICAL STEPS:

» Planning Center Online – Post parts, other training resources.

» Click Track // In Ear Monitors // MD

» Ableton – Fill in the holes/Utilize more keyboard/synth parts.

4. Attitude – We endeavor to have the mind of Christ, and approach life with an attitude of

humility and an atmosphere of fun.

Philippians 2:5-7a (NLT): 5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being…

° EMPOWERED TEAM OWNERSHIP.

° Romans 12:8 (NIV): 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

» There is no job big or small, we gladly serve the team wherever there is a need.

» We empower the next generation, and allow them to lead.

» We have fun!

° HONEST, HONORING, CONSISTENT FEEDBACK.

° Ephesians 4:15 (NIV): 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

» We value people over the mistake, but we don’t let the mistake go unaddressed.

» We extinguish the spirit of criticism but embrace critical thinking to solve problems.

» We receive feedback with grace and strive to grow and change.

° SERVANT LEADERSHIP.

° Galations 1:10 (NIV): 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

» We put the cause of Christ above our own agenda.

» We put the needs of others above our own.

° PRACTICAL STEPS:

» Serve Day // Small Groups // Growth Track – participation in the vision of

the church.

» Leaders set the standard – your attitude sets the tone.
