Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one tutoring for lowest-achieving first graders. Reading Recovery’s student results are rooted in a three-tiered professional development model for teachers, teacher leaders, and university trainers. Since Reading Recovery began in North America in 1984, it has reached over 2.3 million first graders and trained tens of thousands of teachers.

The Reading Recovery Council of North America, Inc. (RRCNA) is a not-for-profit association of Reading Recovery professionals, advocates, and partners. Established in 1996, the Council is the only professional organization devoted to serving the priorities of the Reading Recovery community. Governed by a volunteer board of directors, membership and participation are open to anyone interested in Reading Recovery and early literacy. The nearly 4,000 members of RRCNA benefit from professional resources, advocate for Reading Recovery, participate in professional development opportunities, and support research.

Our VisionWe ensure that children who struggle in learning to read and write gain the skills for a literate and productive future.

Our MissionWe achieve reading and writing success for children through partnerships that foster:

• Reading Recovery in English, Spanish, or French as an essential intervention within a comprehensive literacy system

• Teaching of children that is expert and responsive

• Professional development for teachers that is specialized and continuous

• Ongoing development of knowledge and practice based on research, data, and the theoretical framework that has underpinned Reading Recovery since its founding

As a new political agenda shifted the direction of national education policy, the Reading Recovery community united in our efforts to help every child achieve literacy success. As illustrated on the cover of this annual report, RRCNA is uniting teachers, admin-istrators, families, elected officials, and other decision makers in meeting that common goal.

The impact of the Reading Recovery community has been felt across North America, with more than 2.5 million children in the United States and Canada receiving daily one-to-one lessons since 1984. No other intervention matches the effectiveness of Reading Recovery for students. The ongoing professional development unites teachers, teacher leaders, and trainers as they strive to meet the individual needs of struggling first graders.

As our mission emphasizes, partnerships are the backbone of the Council’s work.

• It unites us with the North American Trainers Group (NATG) — the university trainers who guide program change and provide leadership for Reading Recovery teaching, implementation, and research.

• It unites us with the university training centers that provide the organizing structure of Reading Recovery implementation in schools and districts.

• It unites us with our members, many who have cultivated their expertise by pursuing an unparalleled professional development model of continuous learning.

• It unites us with our associate members who provide resources for Reading Recovery teachers and financial support for the Council, and with the exhibitors and sponsors of our conferences.

• It unites us with legislators, decision makers, education professionals, and other supporters who recognize the impact of Reading Recovery on struggling readers.

One key partner is the elementary school principal, whose commitment to Reading Recovery was identified in the i3 summary report as a critical factor in successful implementation. Where Reading Recovery was integrated into the school culture, principals were actively engaged in promoting collaboration and commitment.

Throughout the past year, RRCNA has partnered with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), collaborating on projects to increase principals’ awareness of early literacy and intervention best practices.

A year-long calendar of Principal Magazine articles and advertorials, webcasts, and Twitter chats geared for principals provided many new opportunities to reach critical decision makers. In addition, RRCNA was an education partner at the NAESP Leaders Conference in May and presented a concurrent session and exhibit at the July National Principals Conference in Philadelphia.

Our thanks to steering committee members Craig Dougherty, Janice Van Dyke, Bob Schwartz, Jeff Williams, Maryann McBride, Karen Scott, Gerry Brooks, and Nayal Maktari; to authors Adria Klein, Allison Briceno, Janeen Zunega, and Annette Torres Elías; and a special thank you to Billie Askew.

The strength of RRCNA is in the partnerships we have forged, united in literacy success. As we look to the year ahead, we are confident that as a member of the Council, you will continue to be a vital partner in the success of Reading Recovery.

Resources for Teaching and Learning

Tweeting for Professional Development

RRCNA hosted its first monthly Twitter chat in November 2016. The chats bring together dozens of literacy and education professionals for a lively 1-hour conversation on a variety of topics pertaining to early literacy teaching and leadership. All chats are archived and posted in RRCNA’s Members Only Resource Center.

Teacher Language Modules

The Council’s professional development offerings for members continue to expand, and now include over 100 Listening Library audio recordings and National Conference session videos.

Another new addition this year was a 4-part professional development series entitled “Teacher Language and Action: The Messages We Send.” Featuring video and facilitator script with notes, the modules are designed for individual learning or for educators to learn together through discussion and observation.

Resources for Teaching and Learning

The Journal of Reading Recovery

Published in spring and fall each year since 2000, The Journal of Reading Recovery (JRR) is the only journal devoted to Reading Recovery teaching,

implementation, research, and RRCNA news.

The journals celebrated the strong investment in teacher knowledge, skills, and reflection that is provided through Reading Recovery training.

Reading Recovery Book List

The Reading Recovery Book List now features nearly 6,000 titles and offers members the ability to perform custom searches and print their own lists and labels.

Other frequently accessed member resources are the searchable journal archive, family communication resources, and lesson forms.

New Toolkits for professional learning and literacy teams

Interactive Professional Learning Toolkits organize videos, journal articles, audio files, and other resources by topic area. Writing and Oral Language toolkits were added this year.

The series also includes Assessing and Monitoring Children’s Literacy Behavior, Literacy Teaching and Learning, and Text Reading and Comprehension.

The toolkits are an extension of the RRCNA planning guide, Promising Literacy for Every Child: Reading Recovery and a Comprehensive Literacy System.

When Dante Marshall shared his story on a White House panel last year, he fondly remembered his Reading Recovery teacher, Rose Mary Estice, as the person in his corner who made the difference on his pathway to success. It was bittersweet to acknowledge her recent passing. Rose Mary died Oct. 2, 2016, following a 5-year

battle with cancer. Dante was among the speakers at her memorial service. The two had stayed in touch for more than 30 years. Rose Mary was one of the original Reading Recovery teachers trained by Marie Clay and Barbara Watson in 1984–85 at The Ohio State University, and she taught Dante during the pilot year in Columbus Public Schools. She was most proud of that pioneering work in Reading Recovery. An ardent supporter of RRCNA, Rose Mary provided leader-ship during the organization’s early days and continued that support throughout her career — serving on Development and National Conference committees, writing articles for Council publications, and most recently narrating the running record professional learning modules. The Rose Mary Estice Memorial Fund will provide grants to help defray costs for Reading Recovery professionals to attend the National Conference.
