Anglesea is a recognised haven for native animals and plantlife, particularly rare orchids and native flowers during spring.

Surf beaches and sheltered waters cater for all types of activities including learn to surf, kayaking, swimming and fishing. As the first town where the Great Ocean Road, Great Otway National Park and the Southern Ocean all meet, Anglesea provides a varied range of outdoor activities including mountain biking, bushwalking and 4WD.

THINGS TO SEE & DO> Anglesea Golf Course

This Golf Club is famous for the hundreds of kangaroos that happily graze the undulating fairways and beside its greens. The 18-hole, par 73 layout is in a wonderful bush setting just a short drive up Noble Street from the Great Ocean Road.

> Learn To Surf Try a surfing lesson with one of the local surf schools.

> Enjoy a BBQ There are BBQs, picnic facilities and toilets in a bush, beach or river setting, clearly marked on the map.

> Anglesea Art Walk Experience the joy of discovering a

series of 6 unique mosaic art works constructed by the local community. The mosaic art pieces capture the history, flora and fauna of our unique environment.

> Anglesea Perimeter Walk The Anglesea Perimeter walk (APW)

showcases a range of landscapes around Anglesea. It winds through windswept heathlands and woodlands surprisingly close to the village of Anglesea, on the Great Ocean Road.

Starting point: Anglesea Information Centre

Distance 22km (or 2 x 11km loops) Time: allow approx. 7 hours for the

whole walk

> Anglesea River The wide river is ideal for numerous activities to suit all ages, including canoeing, windsurfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboards and paddleboat hire.

> Relax on the sandy beaches in Anglesea. The Main Beach is suitable for swimmers while Point Roadknight is popular with families. Both beaches are patrolled during summer.

> Alcoa Anglesea (Power Station) Alcoa’s open cut coal mine, nestled in

the valley behind Anglesea, has been operating a power station for 35 years. For an overview of the mine, there are several lookouts surrounding the site.

> Pamper Yourself Luxury body treatments are available at the local day spa.

> Surf Coast Wine Region

The limestone bedrock of the Surf Coast stretches from Waurn Ponds near Geelong to the coast around Torquay and inland to Moriac and Winchelsea. There are over 20 vineyards and eight wineries producing award winning maritime influenced cool climate wines.

> Fishing Popular spots around Anglesea include the Anglesea River Mouth, Coogarah Park, Point Roadknight, Hutt Gully and Urquhart Bluff. Common catches include snapper, bream and salmon. Refer Surf Coast Fishing Guide.

> Shopping & Dining You’ll find a variety of fantastic cafés, restaurants and eateries to choose from in the shopping precinct, the main hotel or along the riverbank. Main shopping centre also has all the necessities such as a supermarket, bank and newsagency. The Riverbank provides eateries and galleries with a river view. Near the main beach are the surf schools and hire shops.

> Great Ocean Road Take your time to travel the Great Ocean Road and discover some of the most spectacular scenery, waterfall walks and resort towns in Australia.

> Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch at Eastern View See the famous memorial which was erected to commemorate the returned servicemen from World War I who built the Great Ocean Road between 1918 and 1932.

A series of bronze plaques between Anglesea and Warrnambool highlight the story of the Road.

OTHER TRACKS & TRAILS> Anglesea Heath

View the superb native flowers and rare orchids that bloom in the coastal heathlands during spring. Amazingly, over a quarter of Victoria’s plant species grow here including more than 100 varieties of orchids. Many vehicle tracks offer photographers, walkers, artists and bird watchers great viewing opportunities. Dusty Miller, Honeypots and Harrisons South tracks are great places to explore the heath in Spring.

> Anglesea Mountain Bike Park The Anglesea Bike Park has 500m of

mountain cross and jump tracks and is located on Camp Road opposite the primary school. Mountain bike riding is permitted on open named vehicle roads and single tracks which start from the car park.

> Coogoorah Park Start at the Visitor Centre on the river and follow the river upstream, across the bridge to Coogoorah Park. Once you cross the Great Ocean Road, walk along the eastern side of the river. Take the bridges to the Pirate Ship Playground and check out the boardwalk through the reeds. There are numerous BBQ facilities and toilets.

Lighthouse Discovery Aireys Lighthouse – Fairhaven

Discovery stroll from the Split Point Lighthouse and lookouts, past whale sighting spots, through traditional Wathaurung country. Cross an ancient tribal boundary to the western reach of the Surf Coast Walk. Learn as you go with the insights of the Lighthouse Discovery Trail and several well-signed viewing platforms.

The Bells Track Bird Rock – Bells Beach

Tread the track that daring pioneer surfers carved through coastal scrub to reach the fearsome waves of Bells Beach. Walk or cycle high along clifftops where peregrine falcons glide. Towns along the way

TorquayThe official start of the Great Ocean Road and Australia’s surfing capital. It is the largest town along the walk with many cafés and restaurants close to the coast providing an ideal meeting point for your Surf Coast Walk adventure. The walk starts at Point Impossible, five kilometres northeast of Torquay and takes you through windswept dunes to the Torquay promenade and its many creature comforts.

AngleseaThis mid point of the Surf Coast Walk has the best of beach and bush. Surrounded by the Great Otway National Park, Anglesea heath and high coastal cliffs with great views. Caravan Parks, B&B’s and cafés line the Anglesea River overlooking many an opportunity for

adventure.

Aireys inletThe Split Point Lighthouse guides visitors to the western end of the Walk past Aireys Inlet, a small coastal village with soul. The pub and local eateries have great views of the local terrain and the western end of the Walk at Fairhaven.

Walking the walk.

Numerous easily accessible walk trailheads can be accessed by car as shown on the map. Sections of the walk can be combined with a low tide shoreline walk to make a loop. For longer self guided walks, consider a pre-arranged car shuttle, Vline coach or taxi. Tour operators can provide a professional, guided walk experience.

Shared Use. Over half the walk is open to cyclists. See map for details. There are several sections suitable for wheelchair access.

What to carry: Always take a mobile phone. Coverage may vary, check with your provider. Carry snacks and drinks.

Dogs are welcome along most sections of the walk, but must be on a leash, check signs for details. Take a bag to pick up after your dog.

Accessibility: Only concrete paths in central Torquay and Anglesea meet wheelchair standards, but most Grade 2 tracks are flat, smooth and step free. See map.

WILDLIFE Discover the array of lovely locals that call the Surf Coast Walk home. Spot the vulnerable Hooded Plover or near threatened Rufous Bristlebird or meet one of our more common natives, including Echidnas and Kangaroos.

Marvel at the marine life nearby on the seashore. From the fascinating Decorator Crab to Victoria’s marine emblem, the Weedy Seadragon, there’s a huge array of wildlife living just off the track.
