2016 3rd Quarter News
The board voted at the last meeting
to delay the building of the new pa-
vilion until the pending SPIG law-
suit is settled. That leaves a seating
problem for our upcoming Thanks-
giving and Holiday Dinners. I am
guessing the answer is to open the
firehouse for seating as we did last year if needed.
It is not ideal but at this point it seems to be the best
option. I would like to thank Brent for all the work
he put into the pavilion project and hopefully we
can get back on track to building the project soon.
Other than losing power for a few hours, the hurri-
cane seemed to do little damage to our community.
HELCO asked for permission to use our community
center if there were long term power outages so
they could communicate with residents. We are
very thankful that need did not materialize.
Many I have spoke with would like to see the gate-
way into our community be mowed on a regular
basis. I am referring to the strip from Wakea to our
community center on Kahiki. If anyone has a sug-
gestion as to how we can accomplish that, I am
looking for input. It is the first thing people see as
they drive into Discovery Harbour and quite honest-
ly it is looking pretty sad. I hope we can find a way
to keep it at least mowed to the row of palm trees on
a regular basis. I look forward to hearing your ide-
as.
I recently heard a rumor that the number of homes
in Discovery Harbour is approaching 300. We
should all have some new neighbors if that is
correct. More to come…

We continue to meet with the
Na’alehu police during our monthly
meetings. The meeting is open to
anyone, so if you have a concern
about our security, please stop
by. We meet the 3rd Monday of the
Month at 5 PM at the Discovery
Harbour Community Center.
I would like to remind everyone that you present
thieves with an easy target when you leave your gar-
age door open when you are not in the gar-
age. Please think about it when you are working
around the house or in the yard. You might not be
able to hear someone if they enter your garage.
Neighborhood Watch is a great way to get to know
your community and to give back. Please consider
volunteering to support our efforts.
We would love to have a list of people to substitute
on our watch “drive about” while people are on vaca-
tion. If you would like to help, but aren’t ready to
commit to 1 hour a week for many months, let me
know.

During the 3rd quarter we received
one plan submittal for new home
construction, two remodel plan
submittals and one outbuilding plan
submittal. All were approved.
Two homes received final
inspections and are completed and
construction on two homes began.
Our growing community now has 10 homes under con-
struction and four homes with approved plans not start-
ed.
We continue to verify and respond to CC&R violations.
During this quarter we have closed 7 violations. I want to
thank everyone who has responded to these issues.
Mosquito Control
In today’s world of Dengue fever, Zika and other mos-
quito borne diseases, it’s critical that we all pay close
attention to the mosquito populations on our property.
Mosquitoes can travel up to 200 yards from where they
hatched, so it’s truly a community problem. According
to the report from the CDC on the Dengue outbreak on
Hawaii Island “Abundant man-made and natural (e.g.,
bromeliad plants) mosquito breeding sites” are a signifi-
cant problem here. The following are recommendations
from vector control organizations in Florida and Hawaii
for addressing potential Bromeliad breeding sites.
Flush the water—and the mosquito larvae and eggs—
out of your bromeliads. A good strong hosing will flush
the water with larvae out of your bromeliads. Do this at
least once a week to disrupt the mosquitoes’ life cycle.
Coat the water in the bromeliads with a small amount
of food-grade oil. Either quickly spray the surface of
any water in the plant with non-stick cooking spray, or
place a few drops of cooking oil in the water. The oil
will cover the surface of the water and keep any mos-
quito larvae present from breathing.
Treat the water in your bromeliads with a safe larvi-
cide. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, or BTI
(Available on Amazon in a
product called -Quick Kill
Mosquito Bits), and metho-
prene, are commercially
available larvicides that are
safe for plants and around
people and pets when used
as directed. Apply about
every two weeks or so for
maximum effectiveness.

The Social Committee has had
another successful event. Thanks
to all of the volunteers for the
successful "No Labor Day Fall
Fiesta" which was celebrated with
80 attendees. We are now moving
on to the Halloween with event
Chairperson Babette Morrow. A flyer will be going
out at the beginning of October with all the details
about the Halloween event. If you would like to
help, contact the office.
After Halloween, we will be moving on to the
Thanksgiving and December Holiday Dinners. If
you are interested in chairing either of these two
events or helping out, please contact Sharon Shin-
ing or the office staff. Building the additional
seating has been put on temporary hold, due to
unforeseen circumstances. It looks like we will once
again be seating people in the firehouse, depending
on how many people sign up to attend. Fire
Department standards say maximum capacity is
72 people in the Community Center and our
attendance has grown to over 100. I will be back on
island on Oct 18th if anyone has questions.

NO LABOR, LABOR DAY DINNER
For the first time in the 9 years I have lived here,
there was no need for the “Labor Day Cleanup
Lunch”. The community looks wonderful, thank
you to everyone who worked so hard to help make
DH beautiful. So, instead of laboring, we had a
celebration dinner, over 80 people enjoyed a
delicious, diverse menu.
The Social Community team did wonders with the
main dish. The attendees once again provided
desserts that were over the moon.
I want to thank the DHCA Social Committee
members who worked so hard, also the Saturday
golfers who helped set up all the tables and chairs,
and the wonderful people who stayed after dinner
and helped clean up the hall.
The next DHCA event will be the Halloween Party.

Aloha,
The Discovery Harbour/ Naalehu C.E.R.T. did their
part in helping out Civil Defense during the recent
tropical storm. Several team members participated
in sending regular Situation Reports to Civil
Defense. These reports alert C.D. of conditions and
needs for our area.
My thanks to our team for their readiness and
participation.
Our meetings are the second Tuesday of the month
from 4pm to 6pm. The
public is invited to join us
and learn what we are all
about. I also encourage the
public to join us in our
ongoing training. Free and
knowledgeable for anyone
interested.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
DHCA Volunteers
Hello Discovery Harbour,
Well it's been pretty quiet lately
with one call out to Pahala, on July
9th. About a 4 acre brush fire
above the Mac Farm on Wood
Valley Road. Even though it was a
small area there was dense fallen trees and a deep
collapsed lava tube full of dead trees.
The call out lasted 7 1/2 hours, but we got to try
out our newly repaired foam system on a fire.
Pumped 2,500 gallons of water with foam.
Also please keep in mind, if the power, landlines
and cell phones go out and you need medical assis-
tance, I will try to have someone at the fire house
to radio 911 for help.
Thank you

cutting the fairways and other areas. I encourage all
golfers here in Discovery Harbour to participate in
the scramble, it’s a fun way to spend Saturday
morning. We gather at together the community
center or the old clubhouse parking lot between
8:30 and 9:00.
Since May we have spent in excess of $5,000.00 on
fuel, equipment, scheduled maintenance and re-
pairs. Weekly labor, all volunteer, is typically in the
neighborhood of 50+/- hours. We try to mow the
course Thursday and Friday every week with por-
tions of other weekdays spent doing maintenance/
repair work or chasing down parts.
While we get many compliments from residents and
non-residents on the appearance of the course and
it’s improvement to the entire community, I’m mak-
ing my standard plea for volunteers to learn to oper-
ate the mowers. We can sure use the help.
One last note...In addition to golfing, several of our
residents enjoy walking their dogs on the course
which is fine but PLEASE pick up after your pet as
a courtesy, and also, it causes problems with the
mowing equipment.

Real Estate Market Update
An article on Real Estate in our
DH subdivision:
Here we are in September 2016
and it appears residential real
estate sales in Discovery Harbour
have picked up in the last year.
We currently have 8 active residential listings
starting at $233,000 for a 2B/2B (1,216 sf) and
high end at $435,000 for a 2/2 (1,844 sf). In the
last year 10 sold with low of $160,000 and high of
$360,000.
We are hoping for an active high season starting in
November thru April 2017, with the return of the
snowbirds. Lot listings show 38 active listings
starting at $26,500 up to $$139,800 with 1
contingent at $30,000 and 4 under contract $28,000
to $48,500. Seven lots sold in the last year $19,000
to $50,000, so we are not seeing the same level of
activity in lots sales that we see in residential sales.
According to the August 31,2016 Griggs Report,
sales up in Kailua - Kona show the Median Price
for residential upward trend now holding at
$577,000 and that the percentage of MLS listings
that are either REO or Short Sales island wide con-
tinues its gradual declining trend. The island wide
average now stands at 10%. In 2012 the percentage
was 40% or more.
Looking forward to more activity in our market this
coming year....welcome back snowbirds!

These LFA have been found in the Na’alehu area. They
are very destructive to plants and their bites are very
painful.
LFA like warm, wet and shady places such as trees, ba-
nanas, palms, potted plants, and other vegetation with
lots of nooks and crannies for locating their nests. They
drive out beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife but,
even worse, their sting is dangerous for pets and farm
animals.
The treatment to rid these pest have started and volun-
teers have been working on eliminating them but they
could use more help. To learn more on how you can
help, check out this website: littlefireants.com

Coqui Frogs
Several coqui frogs have either been discovered and dis-
patched or just heard from a distance within the Discov-
ery Harbour subdivision.
Coqui frogs are considered an invasive species, eating
insects that are vital to Hawaii’s eco-system and emitting
a non-stop shrill sound from dusk ‘til dawn. With no nat-
ural predators, they are spreading across the island, espe-
cially from Hilo, by hitch-hiking on produce, plants and
other items, so be vigilant! They are tiny, with bodies
about the size of a quarter, and tough to spot.
Check out the DHCA website for Control Guidelines. If
you have them on your property, you can “rent” a back
pack sprayer and citric acid for $25.00 ($20.00 is refunda-
ble upon return and $5.00 is used to replenish the citric
acid). Contact the office for details.
Discovery Harbour is looking for Coqui hunt-
ers/volunteers to help our seniors who cannot
eradicate Coquis on their proper-ty. We will place you on a list and
call you when we receive a
request from our committee senior members. Contact us at 929-9576.
