Dear friend,

Welcome to our 2016/17 season!

The School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech attracts all kinds of intelligent, creative, and talented young artists. You’ll find our graduates designing and acting on Broadway, singing at the Metropolitan Opera, innovating as Disney Imagineers, touring with international chamber music ensembles, and making major films, television, and media events. You’ll also find them deeply engaged in their communities as civic leaders, educators, designers, and people who use creativity and connection in all walks of life.

We have the largest concentration of professional level talent in a 300 mile-radius, and some of the student work that you see in our venues will help you understand why we’ve become an arts destination for students who value personal attention, highly trained and nationally renowned faculty, and the support of a wonderful local and regional community. A quick look through this brochure may inspire you to come to an event. We hope it does. It won’t be the last time you see these students’ works—you will encounter our graduates doing important work in the world and your support and encouragement now will resonate into the future.

We look forward to sharing our work with you.

All the best,

Patty Raun, Director School of Performing ArtsMusic | Theatre | Cinema

CLYBOURNE PARKBy Bruce Norris

SEPT 27-30 | 7:30 PMOCT 2 | 2 PM & 7:30 PMOCT 3-6 | 7:30 PMStudio Theatre$12 general | $10 senior/student

Bruce Norris’ excruciatingly funny and squirm-inducing satire Clybourne Park explodes the fault line between race and property in two outrageous acts set fifty years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as white community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. Winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the 2012 Tony Award for Best Play.

“Courageous… Norris’ elegantly structured play nails marital tensions as much as it does racial disharmony in an evening of ebullient provocation.” —The Guardian

Directed by Susanna Rinehart

CLYBOURNE PARK is presented as part of a university-wide conversation about race and the intersectionality of the human experience. Watch for free screenings of A Raisin in the Sun, the 1961 film that shares a close connection with Lorraine Hansberry’s 1959 play of the same name.

At the turn of the 20th century, legendary French actress Sarah Bernhardt is booked to perform in Quebec City, but her performance is banned by the Catholic Church. The young men are swept up in the momentum of the theatrical superstar’s visit and their lives are forever changed by the encounter. A compelling new play about the power of art in our lives, the horrors of censorship, lies and secrets, the destruction of innocence, and the oppression of the Church in early 1900’s.
