1 65 th College Day Report 2016-2017 It is indeed a significant moment of honour and privilege to present before you the 65 th College Annual Report reviewing the prime achievements of the year 2016-17. Emerged at the philanthropy of our revered founder Sri. G.V.Govindasamy Naidu, our college has completed 65 years of successful academic journey. His vision to educate, to elevate and to empower the rural women has been successfully achieved in this temple of learning with the holistic education provided to the learners. His vision is carried out effectively by the present management with the benevolent support and magnanimous contributions enabling the sustainable growth of the institution. The education in GVG College provides a seat of intellectual awakening and cultural renaissance to the young women in this part of the country and the college sets a shining example of inclusive culture to student community. Looking back the academic year 2016-2017, brings before us an array of the new milestones reached by the institution, the special accomplishments and remembering the miles to go. 65th College Day Report

2016-2017

It is indeed a significant moment of honour and privilege to present before you the 65th

College Annual Report reviewing the prime achievements of the year 2016-17.

Emerged at the philanthropy of our revered founder Sri. G.V.Govindasamy Naidu, our

college has completed 65 years of successful academic journey. His vision to educate, to elevate

and to empower the rural women has been successfully achieved in this temple of learning with

the holistic education provided to the learners. His vision is carried out effectively by the

present management with the benevolent support and magnanimous contributions enabling

the sustainable growth of the institution. The education in GVG College provides a seat of

intellectual awakening and cultural renaissance to the young women in this part of the country

and the college sets a shining example of inclusive culture to student community. Looking back

the academic year 2016-2017, brings before us an array of the new milestones reached by the

institution, the special accomplishments and remembering the miles to go.

The consistent philanthropic spirit of our honourable Madam Secretary Smt. Sumathi

Krishnaprasad has made the events and achievements of the year 2016-17 laudable , incredible

and memorable one in this history of the college as the stone edifice of the building has got a

total renaissance, elevating the academic ambience in the college.

I am much elated to record the prime achievements of the year :

The sanctioning of the proposal by DBT under STAR COLLEGE SCHEME with the

financial support of Rs. 55 lakhs for strengthening all the science departments.

Selection of our college as one among the top 20 best institutions in the country by

MHRD in implementing the Digital Financial Literacy Campaign out of 4500

institutions participated in the programme.

The achievements of each year is reflected in the growing strength of the

institution from year to year .The college reopened on 16.06.2016. With the introduction

of UG Course in Statistics, at present 20 UG courses and 7 PG courses are offered. The

students strength as on date is 2895 with 653 students residing in the hostel. 865 students

have received scholarship to the tune of Rs.26,28,103. 9 teaching staff and 9 non teaching

staff were appointed in the aided stream.

The College Union and its affiliated clubs had its formal inauguration by

Mrs.S.Jayandhi I.A.S., District Collector, Tirupur on 28.07.2016 and was followed by various

activities throughout the year.

Distinguished persons were invited from all walks of life to deliver lecture,

motivational talks and inspiring speeches. This is done to infuse in the students a sense of

leadership, social commitment and elevate themselves as empowered individuals.

Dr.R.Radhika, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Economics was conferred

with Award of Recognition in Honour of her services and contribution to the society

Dr. V. Sedipoun, Assistant Professor, Department of Tamil was conferred with the

“Kanchithalaivan Perarinjar Anna 108 Virudhu Kedaiyam Award” by

Ulakathtamil Arachi Niruvanam & Kanchikalai Sangam on 22.10.2016.

Ms.S.Shobana, Head, Department of Computer Science was honoured with

“Microsoft Azure Research Award” with the Sponsorship of $20,000 for the

year 2016-17.

Associate NCC Officer Lt.P.Karpagavalli, was awarded “Best Trekker and

Organizer Gold Medal in the All India Trekking Camp” held at Darjeeling from

01.07.2016 to 10.07.2016.

Augmenting Infrastructure

This year report documents a significant milestone in GVG history – the enhancement

of infrastructure, the greatest achievement of our honourable Madam Secretary.

The 65 year old institution has gained a majestic identity with the raising of additional

two storied building for 50,000 Sq.feet with the noble contribution of rupees nine crores by

our management. New building comprises of a new Board room, Dining room, Director's

room eighteen new classrooms including two galleried structured rooms, two new staff

rooms, three new computer laboratories, new research lab and a well furnished conference

hall. This ambience will be cherished by the entire academic community here and will be

remembered with gratitude and joy forever.

During this year 1090 books have been added, making the total books in library

53477.

Seminars and Workshops organized by the Departments

Department of B.Com (C.A) Department of B.Com (e.com) organized six days

“Hands on Training for Launching Products on Web” in tie up with ADROIT

Technologies from 16th July 2016 to 18th July 2016 and from 22nd September 2016 to

24th September 2016.

The Department of Computer Science organized two days National Level Workshop

on “Ethical Hacking” in association with E-cell Robokart, IIT Mumbai on 14th & 15th

September 2016

Department of Zoology organised a National level Seminar on ‘Eco - Waste

Management and Nanobiology’, on 20th October 2016 and published 28 research

papers with ISBN No. 978-93-86176-36-3.

Department of Commerce organised a national level seminar on "The Dynamics

of Crowdfunding " on 23rd, Dec.2016.

The Department of Mathematics (Aided and SF) jointly organised a National level

seminar on the topic “Recent Advances in Mathematics” on 3rd February 2017.

The Department of Tamil in collaboration with Department of Indian Studies,

University of Malaya, Malaysia conducted an International seminar on “Women

writings in Tamil Literature on 7th February 2017 and brought out a publication with

82 Research articles - ISBN-978-81925671-6-7.

ICT Cell and B.Com (SF) jointly organised “GVG TECHNO VISION 2017- A

ROADMAP TO CASHLESS ECONOMY" to provide a demo on utilisation of

various online Services and efffective utilisation of Online Banking Services on 22nd

February 2017. 570 students registered for the program.

The Department of Economics & the ED Cell jointly organized one day workshop on

“Ask an Entrepreneur: Creating the Perfect Pitch” on 28th February 17 with the

alumnae as resource persons.

The Intra Departmental Meetings were conducted by the Department of Information

Technology, Department of BBA (CA) and by the Department of BCA on 15th

February 18th February 2017 and on 7th March 2017 respectively.

Research Activities – Faculty and students

Research and Collaboration centre has launched the Second Volume, Number 1 of the

Research Journal “GVG MINDSCAPE”

The Department of Economics published an Edited book on “Insight of IPRs -

Concepts and Issues” in the month of March 2017 with ISBN:978-93-86176-42

Faculty Achievements

Mrs.B.Nirmala, Associate Professor of Physics and Dr.S.Umamaheswari, Associate

Professor of Zoology presented the proposal to DBT under Star College Scheme on

11th Jan 2017 at New Delhi and the proposal is sanctioned by DBT.

Dr.N.Lakshmi, Associate Professor & Head Department of Commerce was the Co-

ordinator for the programme – VISAKA – the Digital Financial Literacy Campaign

for which the college is honored with an award by MHRD.

Dr.R.Radhika, Associate Professor & Head Department of Economics was the

resource person for the National Seminar on “Enhancing Agricultural Productivity”

organized by the Department of Commerce, PKR Arts College for Women,

Gobichettipalayam on 16th February2017.

P.Karpagavalli , Assistant Professor, Department of History was the Resource Person

for three seminars;

- UGC sponsored National Seminar on “Violence Against Women: Unearthing

Strategies to Combat” organized by Department of Political Science & Public

Administration, Annamalai University, on September 30 October, 2016.

- Chair Person for UGC sponsored National Seminar on “Human Rights and Duties

Education” organized by Department of Political Science & Public Administration,

Annamalai University on February 22nd & 23rd 2017.

- She was also the resource person for One day Training Programme on “Rising

Awareness on Human Rights Issues Among College Students” sponsored by

National Human Rights Commission organized by Department of Political

Science, Gobi Arts and Science College,Gobichettipalayam on 10th December

2016.

- As an Associate NCC Officer Lt.P.Karpagavalli represented Tamilnadu State in

Naval Attachment Camp held at INS Sivaji, Lonawala, Mumbai in August 2016.

Mrs.K.Manimekalai Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Computer

Applications delivered Guest lecture on the Topic “Internet of Things(IoT)”to the PG

Department of Computer Applications, Vidhyasagar College, Udumalpet on 19th

October 2016.

Mrs.P.Rajeswari,Assistant Professor and Head, Department of English (SF) gave a

guest lecture on “Effective Communication Skills” at Vidhyasagar College of Arts

and Science , Udumalpet on 9th September 2016.

Dr.Mallika Baskar, Assistant Professor, Department of Logistics & Freight

Management was the resource person for the “Entrepreneurship Development

Programme - How Techno Innovators can become Techno – Entrepreneurs?” on 10th

November 2016 at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women.

Dr. B.Sujatha, Director of Physical Education was appointed as a Selection

Committee Member of Bharathiar University Badminton Women Team, Table Tennis

Women Team, Hockey Women Team and Basketball Women Team for the year

2016-2017. She was also nominated as a Basketball team Manager for the Bharathiar

University Basketball Women team to participate in South Zone Inter-University

Basketball Tournament held at Calicut University, Calicut from 8th December 2016 to

14th December 2016.

Faculties of the college have also been actively involved as Subject Expert in Doctoral

Committees, as members of inspection Commissions and Board of Studies of

Universities and other autonomous colleges and many faculties were deputed by the

State Government for executing the confidential work.

Faculty members have been updating themselves by attending refresher and

orientation course, for career advancement and two of them attended orientation

course during this year.

A FDP was organized on “Outcome Based Education for Sustainable Societal

Development- The Need of the Hour” on 24th November 2017.

ICTACT:

The best Practice of our Institution entitled “Integrative and Transformative Learning

through Digital Convergence” written by N.Rajeswari, Asso.Prof. of Mathematics was

selected and published in the Special Compendium by the ICT academy and was released

on 28.2.2017. The institution was honoured with a certificate at the “India Convergence

2017” at Chennai on 1.3.2017.

Students Achievements

The students of III B.Sc Mathematics, C. Kalaiselvi and V.Nandhini won I prize in

model presentation. S. Abinaya, B. Nivedha, S.Sowndharya, and M.Srivarshini

won II prize in miming , K.Sowndarya and S.Abinaya won III prize in mindtwister at

Dr.SNS college of Arts and Science, Coimbatore on 4th January 2017.

C.Kalaiselvi and V.Nandhini won I prize in model presentation and P. Kavya won I

prize in paper Presentation at GTN Arts College, Dindigul on 23rd September 2016.

A.Priyanka, R.Priyadharsine of III B.Sc Chemistry won I Prize in Chem Quiz at

Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram on 14th February 2017.

M.Steno Abarna of I B.Sc. Physics won II Prize in the oratorical competition

organized by “Forest department” in connection with “World Tigers Day”. She also

won the First Prize in the oratorical competition at Tiruppur district level and was

selected to represent the district at Chennai and she won II Prize.

P.Kalaiyarasi and S.Kowsalya of III B.A Tamil(SF) won II Prize in Quiz Competition

conducted at NGM College, Pollachi on 4th August 2016.

In the recitation on Bharathidasan songs conducted by Murasoli Foundation on 21st

August 2016, N.Bharathi of I B.A Tamil(SF) won I prize with the cash award of Rs.

2000/.

K.Manjuladevi of II M.A.History won Second Prize in Essay Writing in the

Intercollegiate Competition conducted by APA college of Arts and Culture, Palani on

the eve of “World Tourism Day” and P.Suganya of III B.A History won III prize in

the same event.

In the intercollegiate competition conducted at Kongu Nadu Arts and Science college,

Coimbatore, B.Ganasaraswathy and A.Alagu Nachammmai of II B.Com won I prize

in Paper Presentation. B.Dharani and B.Iswarya II B.Com won II prize in Art from

Waste.

In the intercollegiate competition conducted at Karpagam University, Coimbatore

B.Aiswarya V.Divya and B.Dharani of II B.Com won II prize in Wealth out of

Waste and K.Sivamani and V.Lavanya won II and III prizes in Rangoli.

P.Girija, V.Hemalatha, J.Iswarya and S.Keerthana of III B.Com got II prize in miming

at SNMV College,Coimbatore.

III B.Sc Zoology had one day training on Beekeeping for Apiculture on 14th February

2017 at TNAU, Coimbatore.

K. Palaniyammal of II B.Sc Chemistry participated in the state level Tamil Essay

Writing Competition conducted by The Prophet educational development society,

Madurai, Kongunadu arts and science college, Coimbatore and NGM College,

Pollachi and secured III prize.

Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyan (VISAKA)

The Department of Commerce carried out the VISAKA programme successfully from

12th December 2016 to 12th February 2017. Awareness Programs and Rally were

conducted on “A step towards Cashless Economy”, “Need for Cashless Economy and on

Modes of Digital Payments” and a Survey on Preference for Modes of Digital Payments

was carried out. 696 Volunteers actively participated and two students B.Aishwarya and

S.Monisha of II B.Com were selected as ‘Best Volunteers’ by MHRD. 36,919 persons

benefited under the programme.

Highlights of the activities of various clubs

The College Union organised the celebration of the National festivals customarily and

the affiliated Clubs carried out the following activities in order to impart the values:

Environmental Club Environmental week celebrations were arranged with resource

persons from Forest Department emphasising the Need for preservation of Western

Ghat, and the Bio-diversity Conservation of Anamalais. Students participated in the

rally at Udumalpet to create Awareness about “Tiger Conservation” organized by

“ARANYA charities” & “Forest Department”. A project on survey of birds –

Biodiversity in Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Dharapuram, Munnar, Dindugul & Thrissur

was done by I B.Sc. Zoology students. The club also conducted a competition for the

compilation of Photo album on Pollution.

English Literary Association organised four day ’LITFEST’ from 27th February

2017 to 2nd March 2017 to promote and develop the literary talent of the students in

which 300 students participated.

Consumer Awareness Club 70 students received “Citizen Consumer Club

membership card” from Federation of Consumer Organisation – Tamilnadu &

Pondicherry (FEDCOT) for the participation of trainers training programme organised

by FEDCOT. The cardholders have the right to raise queries when there are any unfair

trade practices. A Legal Awareness on Cyber Crime and Consumer Awareness

Programme was organised on 9.3.2016.

Media club developed the societal awareness through a competition on the preparation of

Documentary Film titled “GVG and Societal Awareness”.

The Health and Hygiene Club, as per Government order, conducted awareness

programme on Dengue fever on 2nd September and 2nd December 2016 and an

extraordinary meeting on the Symptoms of Health problems of girls on 28th

September 2016.

Fine Arts Club

Under the “Fine Arts Week Celebration” in our College, Pencil Sketching, Mehandi,

Face Painting, Hair Do, Rangoli, Party Make Up, Miming, Solo Song, Solo Dance,

Group Dance, Super Click, Short Film, Documentary and Poster Presentation were

organized from 19th to 24th December 2016. More than 300 students participated in the

competitions.

In Navarathiri Kalaivizha organized by Mariamman Thirukovil, Pollachi our students

won I prize in Solo Dance, Four students received II prize in Essay writing, Elocution,

Solo Song and Group Dance and III prize in Rangoli.

Three students won II prize in Flash dance and two students got III prize in

Navarasanatiya and four students got III prize in miming in SPRINGS 2016 conducted

by Fatima College, Madurai.

One student won III prize in oil painting and two students received II prize in Hair do

in FATABULOUS 2016 organized by Nehru Arts and Science College, Coimbatore.

One student received II prize in a programme organized by Sree Narayana Guru

College, Coimbatore.

A dance performance to create voting awareness was exhibited in the Taluk office,

Udumalpet.

Six students bagged I prize in Treasure Hunt conducted by Avinashilingam Institute

for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore.

M. Kaviya of III B.Com(SF) received II Prize and a cash award Rs.700 in Solo Dance

conducted by Karpagam University, Coimbatore.

NSS Special Camp in Adopted Villages

Special Camp of this year was held during 24th to 31st December, 2016 at Kaniyur,

covering Kadathur, Karathozhuvu and Jothampatti villages. Awareness programmes

on voting rights, consumer rights, Government Plans and benefits for Differently

abled persons, a survey on socio- economic profile of the differently abled persons,

details of leprosy affected persons and other health related problems in the selected

villages were collected and forwarded to the concerned departments with the

participation of Department of History, Economics and Economics with Logistics and

Freight Management and Department of commerce.

NSS volunteers assisted in identifying disabled persons for the mega camp of

Cheshire Homes, Coimbatore held at Rudraveni Muthusamy Polytechnic College,

Palappampatti on 20/11/2016.

During the last six months our NSS volunteers were educated and motivated to collect

eye and blood donors in and around Udumalpet. A Blood Donors and Eye Donors

Directory were created and data shared with the Indian Medical Association,

Udumalpet.

YRC organised a programme on “Safety tips” and conducted a rally on Cancer

awareness. On 11.09.2016 the volunteers distributed clothes to the tribal people at

Pushpathur and Manalthittu.

Achievements in Games and Sports

R. R. Rajathilagam of I B.Com (CA) represented Tamilnadu State in Senior National

Hockey tournament held at Bangalore.

A. Indhumathi of I B.A. English (Aided) represented Tamilnadu State in Junior

National Hockey tournament held at Ranchi, Jharkhand State.

Abinaya Ramesh of I B.Sc Mathematics (Aided) and M. Mary Roselin of I B.Com

(Aided) participated in III – VIII State Ranking Table Tennis tournament held at

various districts.

M. Mary Roselin of I B.Com (Aided) participated in State level Table Tennis Open

Tournament held at Madurai from 24.06.2016 to 26.06.2016 and secured winner’s

trophy both in singles and doubles.

Abinaya Ramesh of I B.Sc Mathematics (Aided) participated in National Ranking

Table Tennis tournament held at Chandigarh from 25th to 30th June 2016 and

secured third position at national level.

M. Mary Roselin of I B.Com (Aided) and Abinaya Ramesh of I B.Sc Mathematics

(Aided) participated in State level chief Minister’s Trophy in Table Tennis held at

Dr. M. G. R. Stadium, Madurai from 18th to 20th July 2016 and secured Second and

Third positions with the cash award of Rs.75,000/- and Rs.50,000/- respectively.

Our college Badminton team participated in Bharathiar University Inter Collegiate

Badminton tournament from 22.08.2016 to 24.08.2016 and secured Second

Position.

Our college Table Tennis team participated in Bharathiar University Inter

Collegiate Table Tennis Tournament held at RVS College of Arts and Science,

Coimbatore between 29.08.2016 & 30.08.2016 and secured winner’s Trophy. I am

proud to announce that our team could make a historical record of winning the trophy

which was held by the predecessor for 12 consecutive years.

Abinaya Ramesh represented Indian team in World Circuit Indian Junior Open

Table Tennis Tournament organized by International Table Tennis Federation at

Madhya Pradesh, Indore from 7th to 11th September 2016 and qualified up to

quarter finals at International level.

30.12.2016.

selected to represent Bharathiar University in South Zone Inter University

Badminton tournament organized by Anna University from 30.12.2016 to 2.1.2017.

Abinaya Ramesh represented Tamilnadu State for eight consecutive years in the

team event, Junior National Championship held at Baroda, Gujarat from 6th – 11th

January 2017 and secured Gold Medal.

Our college Table Tennis team participated in State level Inter Collegiate Table

Tennis singles tournament organized by PSG college of Arts and Science,

Coimbatore on 07.02.2017 and Abinaya Ramesh and M. Mary Roselin secured First

and Second Positions respectively with the cash award of Rs.1500/- each.

Abinaya Ramesh participated in Zonal level table tennis tournaments organized by

various State table tennis Associations at Visakapattinam, Mizoram, Gujarat and

Madhya Pradesh.

Two of our cadets E.Aarthi of II B.Com (CA), S.Malarkodi of II B.A. Economics with

Logistics and Fright Management were selected to attend the TSC selection camp at

KIT College from 18.06.2016 to 27.06.2016.

22 of our cadets attended the Combined Annual Training Camp at PSG tech

Coimbatore from 01.07.2016 to 10.07.2016. 600 cadets participated in this camp out

of which three cadets N. Nivetha of III B.Sc Chemistry, S. Peiyanayaki of II B.Sc

Mathematics and J. Sundhara Karthiyayini of II B.Sc Physics, received Best Cadet

Medal.

E.Aarthi of II B.Com (CA), S.Malarkodi of II BA Economics with Logistics and

Fright Management were selected attend the TSC PRE - Inter Group Competition

Camp at PSG tech Coimbatore from 01.07.2016 to 10.07.2016. They attended next

level camp at James College Nagerkovil from 13.07.2016 to 22.07.2016.

Cadet G.K.Madhugeerthana of II BCA, attended the Sports Inter Group

Competition Camp Basketball 21.08.2016 to 31.08.2016 and represented 5TN Girls

Battalion CBE.

25 of our cadets were selected to attend the All India Trekking Camp at Darjeeling

from 01.07.2016 to 10.07.2016.

In Darjeeling Trekking Camp A.Ramya of III B.A. English Literature (Aided) was

awarded Best Trekker Gold Medal, N.Nivetha of III B.Sc., Chemistry won Best

Trekker Silver Medal, R.Tamilarasi of III B.Sc., Computer Science ‘A’ Sec and M.

Janani III B.Sc. Physics won I Prize in Dance Competition.

Associate NCC Officer (ANO) Lt.P.Karpagavalli, got Best Trekker and Organizer

Gold Medal.

6 cadets attended the National Integration Competition Camp at Guntoor,

Andhra Pradesh from 10.01.2017 to 19.01.2017.

Associate NCC Officer (ANO) Lt.P.Karpagavalli was selected to represent

Tamilnadu State and participated in Naval Attachment Camp held at INS Shivaji,

Lonawala and Mumbai August 2016.

Career Guidance and Placement Cell

On-campus drive was organized and seven companies consisting of Language

management institutes, Insurance and Business Process Management participated in

the drive. Students attended off-campus drive in Infosys, Infosys BPO, TCS,

marketing and banking companies.

A Programme ‘Corporate Connect’ was organised for the II year students. Resource

persons, Mr.K.S.Siddesh Ram, Chief HR Officer-KRDS, Facebook, Chennai,

Mr.Srinvasa Rao, Senior Manager-Global Recruitment,Syntel,Chennai and

Mr.Srinivasan Ramasamy, Head-Infrastructure and CloudServices,Technosoft,

Chennai addressed the audience about the placement opportunities .

Soft skill training programme and training for developing the aptitude, enabling the

students to take up competitive exams were organised with reputed trainers.

Resource persons from Tamilnadu Graduate Association enlightened the II UG

students about civil service examination.

A demonstration was given to the volunteers on 19th November 2016 at RMPTC on

the title “The volunteer training for a saturation initiative”.

It is heartening to record the selfless service rendered for the differently abled persons

by 122 student volunteers and 20 staff members for the 21st mega camp of Cheshire

Homes Coimbatore at Rudraveni Muthusamy Polytechnic College, Palappampatti on

20th November 2016.Nearly 300 identified differently abled persons in the RMPTC

camp were reassessed by LRC and Women Studies Centre of GVG for Government

Pension schemes and benefits on 2.2.2017.

A guest Lecture on “Women in Development” was delivered by Mr. P. Siva

Subramanian, IES, Research Officer, NITI AAYOG, New Delhi, on 20.7.2016.

GVG - Nodal Training Centre for PWDs

Entrepreneurship Development Cell:

Organized an Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp in association with

Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) Chennai and NIFT-TEA, Tirupur, in

two phases on 15th July 2016 and between 15th – 17th September 2016 with the

participation of 26 students.

One day workshop on Silk Thread Jewellery Making for 102 students of B. Com

(SF), B.Com (E-com) and B. Com (Aided) was conducted.

Students – R. Usha Devi and T. Tharani of III BBA (CA) attended WEBINAR on

Regional Startup Activation Programme (RSAP) organized by KCT and FORGE

for upcoming entrepreneurs at Anna University Regional Campus Coimbatore.

The Cell launched the production of readymade garments with the brand GVG.

Three tailoring m achines, an overlock and one embroidery machine were purchased.

40 Students have enrolled for the ONLINE ENTREPRENEURSHIP LEARNING

offered by EDI, Chennai in collaboration with Wadhwani Foundation – National

Entrepreneurship Network (WF-NEN).

About Management

It is the greatest blessings of the Founder that the college is under the able leadership

of the great granddaughter of our founder Smt.Sumathi Krishnaprasad who works with cheer

and passion to fulfil the vision of our Founder with novel and far-sighted ideas on

education.
