THIRTY—FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 5, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

To try and bear wrongs patiently may be one aspect of the Christian life that we wish we were

better at. But to grow in this area of our lives is not impossible. 2 things can help us in this aspect.

First, to realize truly the mercy God has on us. Think about your own life from the perspective of God Himself. We’ve all had our moments where we’ve fallen short of the commandments and the beatitudes. And yet, God has been patient with us. He, as St. Ignatius says, will try to wake us up so that we turn back to Him, “stinging and biting [our] consciences through [our] rational power of moral judgment.” This is not Catholic guilt so much as God making the overture for us to seek His Mercy and to begin again in His sanctifying grace. The patience of God comes in because we are not always so

generous in our response to such overtures.

This leads us to the second aspect: As God is truly patient with us in our response, so we must be patient with one another. This is not to say that we don’t reach out to one another to call each other back to holiness, as the Lord does so often throughout the Scriptures. We indeed do all we can, but then we

entrust the rest to God. This can be very counter intuitive to our thinking as we are so used to controlling everything. But there are times (often more than we think) that all we can do is entrust those things beyond our immediate control into the hands of God and accept one of the three responses that He gives: 1. “Here it is” (our favorite), 2. “No, not yet” (much harder), or 3. “No, I have something else in

mind” (the hardest, because it requires our trust and to be humble).

All of this leads back to the most basic aspect of the Christian life: We need God’s grace to live all that He calls us to. And that’s found in prayer, participation in the Holy Mass, and the sacrament of reconciliation and indeed all the sacraments. In doing so, we may become, by God’s grace, who He has

made us to be.

God Bless,

Fr. Jim

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (MATTHEW 23:12) Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting other’s needs before our own needs is a sign of becoming a mature disciple, of following Jesus’ example. Humility is really a sign of a strength. By putting other’s needs first we declare to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan for us, the result is Joy and Peace.
