From the Principal’s Desk...

Introducing a new feature to the Correspondent— weekly articles From The Principal’s Desk:

Nope, not her Not him either Not him, it’s his Nope...dead ...and not this guy day off

An interesting article came across my Facebook feed last week. The article is a short synopsis of a book by family physician and psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax entitled, The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups. The point that stood out to me involved this scenario: a 6-year-old child went to Dr. Sax’s office with a sore throat. When Dr. Sax told the child that he was going to look at her throat, the mother then asked the child for permission—even offering ice cream if

the child would agree to let the doctor look in her throat.

The child refused and had to be restrained in order for Dr. Sax to do a strep test. “It’s not a question,” Sax said. “It’s a sentence: ‘Open up and say, Ahh.’” What an interesting observation! How many times in my day do I change a state-ment into a question when I’m speaking to a student in my office? I’ve caught myself a couple times in the last week—and it happens more with younger stu-dents than with older ones. In all reality, the younger students are the ones who don’t have the ability to make a good choice when given an option. How many children have answered yes when asked, “do you want to go to time out?” Instead of facilitating whatever a kid wants to do, Dr. Sax says, “a parent’s job is to teach children right from wrong, teach them the meaning of life and keep their children safe.” And here at Central, the teachers, staff and I all believe that is our job, too. I encourage you to check out the article. It’s a good read. http://atxne.ws/1PH4PVy

Actually, it’s not a question, it’s a school rule: parents please make sure you that you either send your child to school wearing tennis shoes or send a pair of tennis shoes with your child so that he/she can participate in physical education classes and/or recess in the North Gym. Rubber-soled shoes are not the same as tennis shoes. The rubber soles leave black marks on the floor. Stocking feet are not allowed to prevent accidental slipping and stepping on foreign ob-jects.

While we celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week, another national week-long celebration is also taking place: National School Choice Week. Every state in the union is holding some type of event to celebrate NSCW. In fact, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is among 27 governors who have issued proclamations that recognize School Choice Week. Branstad officially proclaimed Jan. 24-30 School Choice Week. A school choice rally was held this week at the Iowa State His-torical Building in Des Moines. The week is designed to raise awareness of the options available to parents in terms of educat-ing their children. In Iowa, our options are public schools, public charter and magnet schools, online learning, homeschooling and our personal favorite: private Lutheran schools. Let’s give that a big, hearty Lutheran nod and close-mouthed smile! That’s as close as you’ll get to a Lu-theran standing ovation. For the fourth year, the NSCW has announced an official song and dance to celebrate. The song is “Verge” by Owl City, featuring Aloe Blacc. Our very own music seminar students have been learning the moves. They performed it this week in front of the entire student body. You can check them out on YouTube using this link: https://youtu.be/rsnu4jvEaBQ

Third grader Ashlee M. is collecting donations of dog and cat food, puppy training pads, dog or cat beds, cash or gift cards from Petco or Petsmart. Ashlee’s Girl Scout troop is sponsoring this fundraiser. All donations will go to Last Hope Animal Rescue, a non profit volunteer/foster rescue in Cedar Rapids. Donations may be brought to school until February 14. Please place them in the blue bin outside teacher workroom. (See flyer attached)
